• Name that blog entry - Modelling changes over time with two db columns only.

- by disown
I vaguely remember reading a blog entry (written by a well-known blogger I think) about how to model price changes over time, and that you could model most changes by saving two dates only (two columns in a db). The blog talked about prices on a website changing over time and how you could figure out the right price to charge knowing only when the purchase had been made. Very vague, I know, but my google-fu is failing me, everyone at IRC are busy talking about other stuff and I don't know what to do! :)

• Looking for an algorithm in vb.net or c# but I don't know it's name!

- by Jules
I'll do my best to explain what the algorithm is supposed to do: There's a class 'Recipe'. Each Recipe can include other Recipes but cannot include itself or any other Recipe that includes it. So, a simple example is we have just two Recipes A & B. If A adds B first, then later on B cannot add A because it will cause a loop. A more complicated example is: A,B,C (1) Recipe C Adds B (2) Recipe B Adds A (3) Recipe A attempts to add C, but can't because of the relationship. C - B - A. I can do this myself, I just wondered if this was a standard named algorithm and I could grab the optimal solution. Thanks

• Hibernate mapping Problem

- by Geln Yang
Hi, There is a table Item like, code,name 01,parent1 02,parent2 0101,child11 0102,child12 0201,child21 0202,child22 Create a java object and hbm xml to map the table.The Item.parent is a Item whose code is equal to the first two characters of its code : class Item{ String code; String name; Item parent; List
children; .... setter/getter.... } <hibernate-mapping> <class name="Item" table="Item">

<property name="name" column="name" length="50" not-null="true" /> <many-to-one name="parent" class="Item" not-found="ignore"> <formula> (select i.code,r.name from Item i where (case length(code) when 4 then i.code=SUBSTRING(code,1,2) else false end)) </formula> </many-to-one> <bag name="children"></bag> </class> </hibernate-mapping> I try to use formula to define the many-to-one relationship,but it doesn't work!Is there something wrong?Or is there other method? Thanks! ps,I use mysql database.

• SVNServ deny write access to a directory via wildcard match.

- by Wes
Hi, We have a requirement that every piece of code that makes it into production will be reviewed by a senior developer. The way I have envisioned this working is by a naming convention for branches that regular developers cannot check code into. Following the SVN recomended directory structure this translates into something like. [project-name]/trunk/ [project-name]/branches/ [project-name]/branches/development-01 [project-name]/branches/development-02 [project-name]/branches/task-increasefontsize [project-name]/branches/release-01 [project-name]/branches/release-02 [project-name]/tags/ So in the authz file I would like to have something like the following [/] @developers = rw [/*/branches/release-*] @developers = r @senior_developers = rw However I can't find any evidence that SVN supports * (or any other wildcard character). Is such a thing possible or do I need a pre-commit hook?

• count number of business that belongs to subcategory in doctrine

- by Ibrahim Azhar Armar
this is follow up of this question. count number of foreign keys i am using doctrine 1.2 and i want to count the number of business that belongs to subcategory. following are the mysql tables. 1.fi_category +----+-----------------+-----------------+ | id | name | slug | +----+-----------------+-----------------+ 2.fi_subcategory +----+-----------------+-----------------+-------------+ | id | name | slug | category_id | +----+-----------------+-----------------+-------------+ 3.fi_business_subcategory +----+-------------+----------------+ | id | business_id | subcategory_id | +----+-------------+----------------+ i am using this DQL. $q = Doctrine_Query::create() ->select('c.name, c.slug, sc.name, sc.slug') ->from('Model_Category c') ->leftJoin('c.Subcategory sc') ->leftJoin('sc.BusinessSubcategory bsc'); which gives me something like this. Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1 [name] => Entertainment & Lifestyle [slug] => entertainment-lifestyle [Subcategory] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1 [name] => Arts and Crafts [slug] => arts-and-crafts ) [1] => Array ( [id] => 2 [name] => Family [slug] => family ) [2] => Array ( [id] => 3 [name] => Fashion [slug] => fashion ) ) ) ) i am looking to fetch the number of business, i.e the returned result should be something like this depending on the business it belongs. Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1 [name] => Entertainment & Lifestyle [slug] => entertainment-lifestyle [Subcategory] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1 [name] => Arts and Crafts [slug] => arts-and-crafts [business_count] => 35 ) [1] => Array ( [id] => 2 [name] => Family [slug] => family [business_count] => 10 ) [2] => Array ( [id] => 3 [name] => Fashion [slug] => fashion [business_count] => 27 ) ) ) ) tried various ways using DQL, but nothing seems to work out. any idea how should i go with what i want?

• odd resharper indentation formatting for object intializers

- by bitbonk
For some strange reason when I have nested object intializers it always gets the last '}' wrong. It is not indented at all as shown in the following example: namespace MyNameSpace { internal static class MyClass { static MyClass() { var bla = new Bla { Name = "Bla" }; bla.Blub = new Blub { Name = "Blub", Blap = new Blap { Name = "Blap", Visible = true }, Blob = new Blob { Name = "Blob" }, Blib = new Blib { Blep = new Heater { Name = "Bleb" }, Id = 1, Blap = new Blap { Name = "Blap" } } // <---- wrong !!! }; } } } Any idea what I can do against it ?

• Why SELECT N + 1 with no foreign keys and LINQ?

- by Daniel Flöijer
I have a database that unfortunately have no real foreign keys (I plan to add this later, but prefer not to do it right now to make migration easier). I have manually written domain objects that map to the database to set up relationships (following this tutorial http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/43025/A-LINQ-Tutorial-Mapping-Tables-to-Objects), and I've finally gotten the code to run properly. However, I've noticed I now have the SELECT N + 1 problem. Instead of selecting all Product's they're selected one by one with this SQL: SELECT [t0].[id] AS [ProductID], [t0].[Name], [t0].[info] AS [Description] FROM [products] AS [t0] WHERE [t0].[id] = @p0 -- @p0: Input Int (Size = -1; Prec = 0; Scale = 0) [65] Controller: public ViewResult List(string category, int page = 1) { var cat = categoriesRepository.Categories.SelectMany(c => c.LocalizedCategories).Where(lc => lc.CountryID == 1).First(lc => lc.Name == category).Category; var productsToShow = cat.Products; var viewModel = new ProductsListViewModel { Products = productsToShow.Skip((page - 1) * PageSize).Take(PageSize).ToList(), PagingInfo = new PagingInfo { CurrentPage = page, ItemsPerPage = PageSize, TotalItems = productsToShow.Count() }, CurrentCategory = cat }; return View("List", viewModel); } Since I wasn't sure if my LINQ expression was correct I tried to just use this but I still got N+1: var cat = categoriesRepository.Categories.First(); Domain objects: [Table(Name = "products")] public class Product { [Column(Name = "id", IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true, AutoSync = AutoSync.OnInsert)] public int ProductID { get; set; } [Column] public string Name { get; set; } [Column(Name = "info")] public string Description { get; set; } private EntitySet<ProductCategory> _productCategories = new EntitySet<ProductCategory>(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_productCategories", OtherKey = "productId", ThisKey = "ProductID")] private ICollection<ProductCategory> ProductCategories { get { return _productCategories; } set { _productCategories.Assign(value); } } public ICollection
Categories { get { return (from pc in ProductCategories select pc.Category).ToList(); } } } [Table(Name = "products_menu")] class ProductCategory { [Column(IsPrimaryKey = true, Name = "products_id")] private int productId; private EntityRef<Product> _product = new EntityRef<Product>(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_product", ThisKey = "productId")] public Product Product { get { return _product.Entity; } set { _product.Entity = value; } } [Column(IsPrimaryKey = true, Name = "products_types_id")] private int categoryId; private EntityRef
_category = new EntityRef
(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_category", ThisKey = "categoryId")] public Category Category { get { return _category.Entity; } set { _category.Entity = value; } } } [Table(Name = "products_types")] public class Category { [Column(Name = "id", IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true, AutoSync = AutoSync.OnInsert)] public int CategoryID { get; set; } private EntitySet<ProductCategory> _productCategories = new EntitySet<ProductCategory>(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_productCategories", OtherKey = "categoryId", ThisKey = "CategoryID")] private ICollection<ProductCategory> ProductCategories { get { return _productCategories; } set { _productCategories.Assign(value); } } public ICollection<Product> Products { get { return (from pc in ProductCategories select pc.Product).ToList(); } } private EntitySet<LocalizedCategory> _LocalizedCategories = new EntitySet<LocalizedCategory>(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_LocalizedCategories", OtherKey = "CategoryID")] public ICollection<LocalizedCategory> LocalizedCategories { get { return _LocalizedCategories; } set { _LocalizedCategories.Assign(value); } } } [Table(Name = "products_types_localized")] public class LocalizedCategory { [Column(Name = "id", IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true, AutoSync = AutoSync.OnInsert)] public int LocalizedCategoryID { get; set; } [Column(Name = "products_types_id")] private int CategoryID; private EntityRef
_Category = new EntityRef
(); [System.Data.Linq.Mapping.Association(Storage = "_Category", ThisKey = "CategoryID")] public Category Category { get { return _Category.Entity; } set { _Category.Entity = value; } } [Column(Name = "country_id")] public int CountryID { get; set; } [Column] public string Name { get; set; } } I've tried to comment out everything from my View, so nothing there seems to influence this. The ViewModel is as simple as it looks, so shouldn't be anything there. When reading this ( http://www.hookedonlinq.com/LinqToSQL5MinuteOVerview.ashx) I started suspecting it might be because I have no real foreign keys in the database and that I might need to use manual joins in my code. Is that correct? How would I go about it? Should I remove my mapping code from my domain model or is it something that I need to add/change to it? Note: I've stripped parts of the code out that I don't think is relevant to make it cleaner for this question. Please let me know if something is missing.

• How to name uploaded files in php to prevent them from being overwritten?

- by user156814
I'm trying to add user submitted articles to my website, (only for admins). With each article comes an option to upload up to 3 images. My database is set up like this Articles id user_id title body date_added last_edited Photos id (auto_increment) article_id First I save the article in the database, then I upload the photo (temporarily) then I create a new photo record in the database saving the article_id. Then I rename the uploaded photo to be the same as the primary key of the photo record, and to be a png. $filename = $photo->id . '.png'; I figured this would be a good way to prevent files form being overwritten. This seems flawed to me. Any suggestions on how I should save my records and photos? Thanks

- by hsz
Hello ! I set a new PHP code template in Netbeans: /* @var $$${name}Table Model_${name}_Table */ $$${name}Table = Container::get('model')->get('${name}_Table'); and if I use as ${name} some value - shop - I have in output: /* @var $shopTable Model_shop_Table */ $shopTable = Container::get('model')->get('shop_Table'); Is it possible to add some modifier to the second and fourth ${name} so I will have it started with upper letter ? Shop_Table instead of shop_Table

• Working with fields which can mutate or be new instances altogether

- by dotnetdev
Structs are usually used for immutable data, eg a phone number, which does not mutate, but instead you get a new one (eg the number 000 becoming 0001 would mean two seperate numbers). However, pieces of information like Name, a string, can either mutate (company abc changing its name to abcdef, or being given a new name like def). For fields like this, I assume they should reside in the mutable class and not an immutable structure? My way of structuring code is to have an immutable concept, like Address (any change is a new address completely), in a struct and then reference it from a class like Customer, since Customer always has an address. So I would put CompanyName, or Employer, in the class as it is mutable. But a name can either mutate and so be the same 1 instance, or a new name setup and while the company still owning the first name too. Would the correct pattern for assigning a new instance (eg a new company name but the old name still owned by the company) be?: string name = ""; string newName = new string(); newName = "new"; name = newName; And a mutation just the standard assignment pattern? Thanks

• Default controller name is removed on browser refresh (CodeigniterPHP/Nginx issue?)

- by tim peterson
For all pages in my codeigniter app except my default controller, when I refresh the browser the url isn't affected as one would expect. However for my default controller, main.php, when when I refresh the browser at "http://localhost/main" or "http://mysite.com/main", the main part is stripped off the url. So the browser bar shows just "http://localhost" or "http://mysite.com". Totally lost on where to start with this but was just wondering if anyone has come across this before...? Here's what I think could be the relevant part of my nginx.conf (if Nginx is the problem). if ($request_uri ~* ^(/main(/index)?|/index(.php)?)/?$) { rewrite ^(.*)$ / permanent; }

• C++ include .h includes .cpp with same name as well?

- by aaron
so I have text.cpp, which 'includes' header.h, and then I have a header.cpp which includes header.h. How is header.cpp compiled as well? I'm walking through a guide here, and thoroughly confused. Also, what is the correct terminology for what I am asking? I know I sound like a moron, and I apologize, but I'm ignorant. Oh, main is in test.cpp. Also, if header.cpp includes , why can't I use iostream function calls in text.cpp if it is included? If I include iostream in text.cpp will it be included in the program twice (in other words, bloat it)?

• Can we add new attribute or change type of existing attribute to a "Referenced Element"?

- by JSteve
In my XML schema I have an element being referenced tens of times by other elements but with different enumerated values for one of its attribute. For now, instead of creating this element in global space and referencing it later, I am creating a new instance wherever it is needed. This approach has increased my schema size enormously because of repeated creation of almost same element many times. It also may have adverse effect on efficiency of the schema. The only way that I see is to create element once and then reference it many times but my problem is: one of the attribute of this referenced element is required to have a different set of enumerations for each referencing element. My question is: Is it possible to to add an attribute to a "Referenced Element" in XML Schema? Something like this: <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.myDomain.com" xmlns="http://www.myDomain.com" elementFormDefault="qualified"> <xs:simpleType name="myValues1"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value1" /> <xs:enumeration value="value2" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:element name="myElement"> <xs:complexType mixed="true"> <xs:attribute name="attr1" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="attr2" type="xs:string" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> <xs:element name="MainElement1"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="myElement"> <xs:complexType> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="mainAtt1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema> Or can we change type of an existing attribute of a "Referenced Element" in XML Schema? something like this: <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.myDomain.com" xmlns="http://www.myDomain.com" elementFormDefault="qualified"> <xs:simpleType name="myValues1"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value1" /> <xs:enumeration value="value2" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:simpleType name="myValues2"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value3" /> <xs:enumeration value="value4" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:element name="myElement"> <xs:complexType mixed="true"> <xs:attribute name="attr1" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="attr2" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> <xs:element name="MainElement1"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="myElement"> <xs:complexType> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues2" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="mainAtt1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema>

• Is there a name for this type of algorithm?

- by rehanift
I have a 2 dimensional array forming a table: [color][number][shape ] ------------------------- [black][10 ][square ] [black][10 ][circle ] [red ][05 ][triangle] [red ][04 ][triangle] [green][11 ][oval ] and what I want to do is group largest common denominators, such that we get: 3 groups group #1: color=black, number=10, shapes = [square, circle] group #2: color=red, shape=triange, numbers = [05,04] group #3: color=green, number=11, shape = oval I wrote code that will handle a 2 "column" scenario, then I needed to adjusted it for 3 and I was figuring I might as well do it for n. I wanted to check first if there is some literature around this but I can't think of what to start looking for!
