  • Table Design For SystemSettings, Best Model

    - by Chris L
Someone suggested moving a table full of settings, where each column is a setting name(or type) and the rows are the customers & their respective settings for each setting. ID | IsAdmin | ImagePath ------------------------------ 12 | 1          | \path\to\images 34 | 0          | \path\to\images The downside to this is every time we want a new setting name(or type) we alter the table(via sql) and add the new (column)setting name/type. Then update the rows(so that each customer now has a value for that setting). The new table design proposal. The proposal is to have a column for setting name and another column for setting. ID | SettingName | SettingValue ---------------------------- 12 | IsAdmin        | 1 12 | ImagePath   | \path\to\images 34 | IsAdmin        | 0 34 | ImagePath   | \path\to\images The point they made was that adding a new setting was as easy as a simple insert statement to the row, no added column. But something doesn't feel right about the second design, it looks bad, but I can't come up with any arguments against it. Am I wrong?

  • Multilingual support using gettext with codeigniter, best practice?

    - by tobefound
I know how to create .po files and how to generate .mo files and then use them for translation on my Codeigniter powered site. However, I'm not quite sure on how to change language from the site GUI. I want to stick to codeigniter's default url calling schema: www.domain.com/controllername/method/param1/param2. Calling the server like this is a no-brainer: www.domain.com/controllername?lang=en Doing that for every controller using the default url schema, requires me to implement the same method in every controller, just to pass the lang parameter to the setlocale() function and then bind to my .po domain name. Feels awkward... ANy ideas how you guys work with gettext in codeigniter? And yes, I do want to work with gettext.

  • What are the recommended BEST CASE hardware requirements for TFS 2010

    - by Doug
Hi guys, i have installed TFS 2010 in a 2 server setup with an App Tier server and a SQL Server and am not 100% happy with the performance. Both are running in VM's on SAN disks and have been given the following virtual hardware each: Windows 2008 R2 1 CPU @ 2.8Ghz 2gb RAM what should i lift - neither machine is hammered but both do go up to 80% when people are doing things on them - should i add another CPU to each - usually this is now required in a VMWARE setup but i don't know if TFS 2010 takes advantage of an extra core??? thank you in advance :-)

  • WCSF vs MEF, What's Best For Me?

    - by Galilyou
Hey fellows, I'm working on a large web application that includes many modules (CRM, Inventory, Administration, etc.) What I want to accomplish is to be able develop each of these modules independently (the UI, Core Logic, DataAccess Logic, and all) and then integrate them all together into a core module (this integration should only be a change in the configuration file). For example, if I have a core module named Host, I should be able to add the CRM module to the host module by simply adding this line to the host's configuration file: <module name="CRM" /> I did some reading on the WCSF, and found that it can help integrate some modules together, but it really doesn't offer so much help in terms of integrating those UI elements. Some friends suggested MEF for the job, but I haven't looked at that yet. What do you guys think? Is it possible to achieve this level of modularity, and how much work do I have to put into it to get it working?

  • Best Practise for Stopwatch in multi processors machine?

    - by Ahmed Said
I found a good question for measuring function performance, and the answers recommend to use Stopwatch as follows Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); //DoWork sw.Stop(); //take sw.Elapsed But is this valid if you are running under multi processors machine? the thread can be switched to another processor, can it? Also the same thing should be in Enviroment.TickCount. If the answer is yes should I wrap my code inside BeginThreadAffinity as follows Thread.BeginThreadAffinity(); Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); //DoWork sw.Stop(); //take sw.Elapsed Thread.EndThreadAffinity(); P.S The switching can occur over the thread level not only the processor level, for example if the function is running in another thread so the system can switch it to another processor, if that happens, will the Stopwatch be valid after this switching? I am not using Stopwatch for perfromance measurement only but also to simulate timer function using Thread.Sleep (to prevent call overlapping)

  • App.Config Best Practices ?

    - by abmv
Normally when you have a application configuration file in your application and your application is expected to read from it. Is it good to check initially at start up if this file exists and raise an error and not to proceed at all ? (Worse case senarios) Or leave it to the unhandled exception manager to handle it and shut down the application? (WPF/Winforms etc)

  • The best cross platform (portable) arbitrary precision math library

    - by Siu Ching Pong - Asuka Kenji
Dear ninjas / hackers / wizards, I'm looking for a good arbitrary precision math library in C or C++. Could you please give me some advices / suggestions? The primary requirements: It MUST handle arbitrarily big integers (my primary interest is on integers). In case that you don't know what the word arbitrarily big means, imagine something like 100000! (the factorial of 100000). The precision MUST NOT NEED to be specified during library initialization / object creation. The precision should ONLY be constrained by the available resources of the system. It SHOULD utilize the full power of the platform, and should handle "small" numbers natively. That means on a 64-bit platform, calculating 2^33 + 2^32 should use the available 64-bit CPU instructions. The library SHOULD NOT calculate this in the same way as it does with 2^66 + 2^65 on the same platform. It MUST handle addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), integer division (/), remainder (%), power (**), increment (++), decrement (--), gcd(), factorial(), and other common integer arithmetic calculations efficiently. Ability to handle functions like sqrt() (square root), log() (logarithm) that do not produce integer results is a plus. Ability to handle symbolic computations is even better. Here are what I found so far: Java's BigInteger and BigDecimal class: I have been using these so far. I have read the source code, but I don't understand the math underneath. It may be based on theories / algorithms that I have never learnt. The built-in integer type or in core libraries of bc / Python / Ruby / Haskell / Lisp / Erlang / OCaml / PHP / some other languages: I have ever used some of these, but I have no idea on which library they are using, or which kind of implementation they are using. What I have already known: Using a char as a decimal digit, and a char* as a decimal string and do calculations on the digits using a for-loop. Using an int (or a long int, or a long long) as a basic "unit" and an array of it as an arbitrary long integer, and do calculations on the elements using a for-loop. Booth's multiplication algorithm What I don't know: Printing the binary array mentioned above in decimal without using naive methods. Example of a naive method: (1) add the bits from the lowest to the highest: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ... (2) use a char* string mentioned above to store the intermediate decimal results). What I appreciate: Good comparisons on GMP, MPFR, decNumber (or other libraries that are good in your opinion). Good suggestions on books / articles that I should read. For example, an illustration with figures on how a un-naive arbitrarily long binary to decimal conversion algorithm works is good. Any help. Please DO NOT answer this question if: you think using a double (or a long double, or a long long double) can solve this problem easily. If you do think so, it means that you don't understand the issue under discussion. you have no experience on arbitrary precision mathematics. Thank you in advance! Asuka Kenji

Hi, I have a web service which returns the following XML: <Validacion> <Es_Valido>NK7+22XrSgJout+ZeCq5IA==</Es_Valido> </Validacion> <Estatus> <Estatus>dqrQ7VtQmNFXmXmWlZTL7A==</Estatus> </Estatus> <Generales> <Nombre>V4wb2/tq9tEHW80tFkS3knO8i4yTpJzh7Jqi9MxpVVE=</Nombre> <Apellido>jXyRpjDQvsnzZz+wsq6b42amyTg2np0wckLmQjQx1rCJc8d3dDg6toSdSX200eGi</Apellido> <Ident_Clie>IYbofEiD+wOCJ+ujYTUxgsWJTnGfVU+jcQyhzgQralM=</Ident_Clie> <Fec_Creacion>hMI2YyE5h2JVp8CupWfjLy24W7LstxgmlGoDYjPev0r8TUf2Tav9MBmA2Xd9Pe8c</Fec_Creacion> <Nom_Asoc>CF/KXngDNY+nT99n1ITBJJDb08/wdou3e9znoVaCU3dlTQi/6EmceDHUbvAAvxsKH9MUeLtbCIzqpJq74e QfpA==</Nom_Asoc> <Fec_Defuncion /> </Generales> The text inside the tags in encrypted, I need to decrypt the text, I've come up with a regular expressions solution but I don't think it's very optimal, is there a better way to do this? thanks!

  • Best Open Source Project Hosting Site

    - by Cristian
I want to start an open source project, but the rise in hosting sites leaves me a little paralyzed with choice. I know a little about several: I never really liked SourceForge's UI but it still feels like the site I think of when I think "open source project hosting". Google Code Project Hosting looks clean and useful but doesn't seem as feature complete as SourceForge. I've heard good things about Launchpad but don't know much about it nor do I know Bazaar (though I'd be interested in learning it). I know almost nothing about GitHub and, like Bazaar, I don't know Git. Does anyone have any experience with these sites or some other cool code host? Any recommendations? Recommended Sites: BitBucket Codeplex Assembla DevjaVu Savannah

  • What is the best way to do testing database (MYSQL spesific)

    - by justjoe
Right now i'm on testing something in a database. It's a wordpress database. i have to write and delete and do other operation on it. As you know it, it has indexing mechanism that will always make every new post inherit the next highest possible ID. Please consider that this database is a copying of used database. it has been written before. So, i will need to make sure when i finish my testing, it will be the same Right now, my only solution is making backup. So if i have end in some section of planned testing, i will backup it and start next testing on another copy of it. Fortunately, the size of database is only a small one. so delete and copy and backup it will be easy. but i know this way of database testing is only partial solution. It force me to create too many backup copy. I don't know what i will do if the database has bigger size. it will be a very long of testing nightmare. so i wonder is there any solution that work just like rollback. So it will just lock the database and just put new entry as some kind of cache. I can erase it or write it into the database. i use mysql and phpmyadmin and use it to developed some custom solution. EDIT ::: How to effectively doing testing on database when developing PHP solution ?

  • Best tools for collaborating with small number of people

    - by Mark Szymanski
Hi, I am collaborating with someone on a project and currently use Skype for collaboration. I like it because we can be on a call to say things that are hard to say by typing out. We can share our screens so we can help with code writing. And we can use the text chat to copy-paste code between each other. We also use Subversion for version control. I just wanted to know what other people used for collaborating with others so I could see whats out there to use. Thanks!

  • What is the best way to bind PhoneGap events (like backbutton) to views in ember.js

    - by Fedor
I'm playing with PhoneGap and emberjs (trying to build "proof of concept" mobile/HTML5 application based on ember.js). Ember.js itself works fine, but I haven't found any good way to "bind" PhoneGap events to views. For instance, I would like to handle backbutton event and remove a view on it. It would be nice to define behavior in view class and call document.addEventListener when instance of the view is appended and call document.removeEventListener when view instance removed.

  • asp.net windows forms - best place to persist application data

    - by mikeh
For Windows.Forms, I have an application that needs to get a unique install id for each install from my server, and then persist this data so once registered, the install ID is included on all communications back to the server. The application is in occasional contact with the server. How can I persist this data on the client in a way that is not easily tampered with?

    - by vizcaynot
Hello: I defined a Window in WPF, into this one I put a "stack panel" and inside this panel I put a "tab control" and some "button controls". When executing the program, I would like that when I have to resize the window using the mouse, the stack panel and all controls inside it can also be resized automatically and proportionally to the window. How can I get this? Thanks!!

  • What's the best Street Address Search service?

    - by Gary Russo
I'm impressed with the simplicity of Microsoft's Virtual Earth Street Address search service. My requirement is to type rough address info with no comma separators into a simple text box, press a find button, wait a few seconds and then observe a result picklist. I mocked up something here using the virtual earth SDK. Does Google Maps have a similar API? Which street address search service is better?

  • Best 3D Graphics Engine for .NET

    - by George Stocker
I've been thinking about tinkering with 3D graphics programming in .NET. In the past, I've thought about Truevision3D, and XNA, but I've not used either of these. I scanned Stackoverflow for the exact question, but neither of the (almost) relevant question (such as this question about rendering graphics, and this question about Learning Game Programming) answer my specific question. Out of the graphics engine APIs you've used for .NET, which is the easiest to use, which has the most features, and which is the cheapest? Which would you recommend for a .NET programmer to learn first?

  • What is the best beginner's guide to PHP?

    - by Ami
I work a lot with Wordpress and I'm trying to customize some of my themes, all of which are written in PHP. I've been trying to learn this language for a little while, but I'm not an experienced coder (My knowledge only includes HTML with some CSS). Can you recommend a guide/book/tutorial/etc that would work for a beginner?
