• Game actions that take multiple frames to complete

  I've never really done much game programming before, pretty straightforward question. Imagine I'm building a Tetris game, with the main loop looking something like this. for every frame handle input if it's time to make the current block move down a row if we can move the block move the block else remove all complete rows move rows down so there are no gaps if we can spawn a new block spawn a new current block else game over Everything in the game so far happens instantly - things are spawned instantly, rows are removed instantly etc. But what if I don't want things to happen instantly (i.e animate things)? for every frame handle input if it's time to make the current block move down a row if we can move the block move the block else ?? animate complete rows disappearing (somehow, wait over multiple frames until the animation is done) ?? animate rows moving downwards (and again, wait over multiple frames) if we can spawn a new block spawn a new current block else game over In my Pong clone this wasn't an issue, as every frame I was just moving the ball and checking for collisions. How can I wrap my head around this issue? Surely most games involves some action that takes more than a frame, and other things halt until the action is done.

• MVVM Project and Item Templates

  Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started. • Persistent "held broken packages" error

  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop gives the error The following packages have unmet dependencies: netflix-desktop : Depends: wine-browser-installer but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. but dpkg --get-selections | grep hold shows nothing. I'm running 12.04 64-bit. I've followed the directions in How do I resolve unmet dependencies?: Confirmed that main, universe, restricted and multiverse software sources are enabled sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get -f install (returning '0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.') sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get -f install (again '0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.) sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade (0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.) used Y PPA Manager to check for duplicate ppas (none found) [Edit] I have had the same error with other packages. • best way to compute vertex normals from a Triangle's list

  hi i'm a complete newbie in computergraphics so sorry if it's a stupid answer. i'm trying to make a simple 3d engine from scratch, more for educational purpose than for real use. i have a Surface object with inside a Triangle's list. For now i compute normals inside Triangle class, in this way: triangle.computeFaceNormals() { Vec3D u = v1.sub(v3) Vec3D v = v1.sub(v2) Vec3D normal = Vec3D.cross(u,v) normal.normalized() this.n1 = this.n2 = this.n3 = normal } and when building surface: t = new Triangle(v1,v2,v3).computeFaceNormals() surface.addTriangle(t) and i think this is the best way to do that.. isn't it? now.. what about for vertex normals? i've found this simple algorithm: flipcode vertex normal but.. hei this algorithm has.. exponential complexity? (if my memory doesn't fail my computer science background..) (bytheway.. it has 3 nested loops.. i don't think it's the best way to do it..) any suggestion?

• Error with APE Server Installation

  I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. After this operation, 1,753kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y (Reading database ... 43924 files and directories currently installed.) Removing ape-server ... invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/ape-server not found. dpkg: error processing ape-server (--purge): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 100 update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/ape-server: file does not exist dpkg: error while cleaning up: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: ape-server E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) My question is; how do I remove all of the ape-server installation packages that were installed so I can reinstall from scratch?

• MEncoder Install on Ubuntu

  I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. For examples when I try sudo apt-get install mencoder the following errors comes out: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • missing libjpeg.so.62 from ia32 shared library

  I am trying to install a chemical/molecular biology modeling program called Molsoft ICM-Pro. Initially after downloading the program and trying to open, it gave me error messages that I was missing shared libraries, and after talking with my network administrator he recommended I install the ia32 shared libraries using sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Which gives sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ia32-libs is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. so I am assuming the libraries installed correctly, but now when I try to run the program I get this error: ubuntu:/home/reilly/icmd icm icm: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So my question is, where can I get the library containing libjpeg.so.62? Additionally, I was told I would need libXmu.so.6 and libtiff.so.3 . Is there a shared library that could be missing that would contain these files? I am an ubuntu noob, so sorry if the information I provided was unclear. Any help would be immensely appreciated! btw I am using ubuntu 12.04 dual boot with windows on an HP pavilion dv6

• Package manager borked with gforge

  I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: gforge-common* gforge-db-postgresql* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 9 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • How should I architect my Model and Data Access layer objects in my website?

  I've been tasked with designing Data layer for a website at work, and I am very interested in architecture of code for the best flexibility, maintainability and readability. I am generally acutely aware of the value in completely separating out my actual Models from the Data Access layer, so that the Models are completely naive when it comes to Data Access. And in this case it's particularly useful to do this as the Models may be built from the Database or may be built from a Soap web service. So it seems to me to make sense to have Factories in my data access layer which create Model objects. So here's what I have so far (in my made-up pseudocode): class DataAccess.ProductsFromXml extends DataAccess.ProductFactory {} class DataAccess.ProductsFromDatabase extends DataAccess.ProductFactory {} These then get used in the controller in a fashion similar to the following: var xmlProductCreator = DataAccess.ProductsFromXml(xmlDataProvider); var databaseProductCreator = DataAccess.ProductsFromXml(xmlDataProvider); // Returns array of Product model objects var XmlProducts = databaseProductCreator.Products(); // Returns array of Product model objects var DbProducts = xmlProductCreator.Products(); So my question is, is this a good structure for my Data Access layer? Is it a good idea to use a Factory for building my Model objects from the data? Do you think I've misunderstood something? And are there any general patterns I should read up on for how to write my data access objects to create my Model objects?

• Installation of Tex Live via the terminal 12.04

  I need to install upstream version of TeX Live for 12.04 to edit the manual for Ubuntu. I am having a difficult time installing it per the directions @ http://ubuntu-manual.org/getinvolved/editors#install-texlive. • Picasa installs but is missing in the menu

  Acer Aspire One Netbook Running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 (freshly installed) 1 GB Ram 150 GM HDD Space I am trying to install Picasa and when I do, it runs its course telling me that it has been installed. But when I try to look for Picasa to run it, it didnt show in the menu anywhere. I am unable to find Picasa on my system and it says that it has been installed already when I try to reinstall it. I have tried a few things; looked for the key: wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add - .. and then added it. tried the following commands after adding Picasa to my source list: sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install picasa and here is what I got: swapnil@iva-swapo-netbook:~$ sudo apt-get install picasa Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done picasa is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. and when I tried to look for Picasa again.. I couldnt find it. So I am unable to install Picasa on my system. Please help. (I am also running this thread on ubuntu forums and havent got the solution yet so I am now here) tried Jorge's solution and it brought Picasa immediately, however I am unable to keep it in the launcher. I created the simplest arcade game that I could imagine so I could explain it in the book. All of the code for the game is included with the book.
