  I've been trying to get a good hold on the x86 assembly language, and was wondering if there was a quick-and-short equivalent of movl $1, %eax. That's when I thought that a list of idioms used frequently in the language would perhaps be a good idea. This could include the preferred use of xorl %eax, %eax as opposed to movl $0, %eax, or testl %eax, %eax against cmpl $0, %eax. Oh, and kindly post one example per post!

  Guys in one of excersises (ch.5,e.8) from TC++PL Bjarne asks to do following: '"Run some tests to see if your compiler really generates equivalent code for iteration using pointers and iteration using indexing. If different degrees of optimization can be requested, see if and how that affects the quality of the generated code"' Any idea how to eat it and with what? Thanks in advice.

  Right now, I'm programming the networking for my online game, and I'm not really sure what to do about receiving data. The problem is that I can't really guess the packet's size, so I thought of reading just 4 bytes from the packet and converting them to an int to know what's the packet's size. Then I'll just create a buffer in that size and receive the rest of the packet, is that a good idea? For your information, I'm using non-blocking i/o.

  Hi all! Do you have any idea how to covert different Unicode characters to their closest ASCII equivalents? Like Ä - A. A googled but didn't find any suitable solution. Trick Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("Ä")[0] didn't work. (Result was ?). I found that there is class Encoder that has Fallback property that is exactly for cases when char can't be converted, but implementations (EncoderReplacementFallback) are stupid and convert to ?. • Use of XMLHttpRequest in Dashboard widget failing

  I am unable to get an XMLHttpRequest object to work correctly in a Dashboard widget I am writing. I've isolated it to a trivial example not working in the global scope of the main.js file: xhr = new XMLHttpRequest; xhr.open( 'GET', "http://google.com", false ); xhr.send(''); When the last line is executed I get the error "ABORT_ERR: XMLHttpRequest Exception 102" (this is in the Dashcode debugger). Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong here?

  Hi, I have bullet physics set up and working on the iPhone but now I want to implement some sort of path finding with it. The problem is I have no idea where to start, the level is pretty simple just a lot of pillars that I want the 'bad guys' to navigate around to get to the player character.   In both Haskell and OCaml, it's possible to call into the language from C programs. How feasible would it be to create Native applications for either Windows, Mac, or Linux which made extensive use of this technique? (I know that there are GUI libraries like wxHaskell, but suppose one wanted to just have a portion of your application logic in the foreign language.) Or is this a terrible idea?

I want to implement that property in Java on a pane, using components as the shapes and text. How can I provide absolute positioning for shapes but at the same time preserve the space between them?   Solution is called Portal which holds Areas/CMS/Login folder inside it. Login controller in CMS/Controllers is the same as AccountController in Portal solution. I customized Login and it works all fine except one thing: When I use [Authorize] filter and If user is not logged in than he is redirected to http://localhost:1177/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fCMS%2fArticle and I would like that redirection takes user to here: http://localhost:1177/CMS/Login Any idea how to solve this? My first idea was to put a the BurrowFramework().InitWorkSpace(); in each method and set the InstanceContextMode to per Call on these methods.
