• Encrypted Home directory not auto mounting

  I installed Compiz on my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10 last week. The way I installed it was kind of different, I opened up a terminal and typed this command: sudo apt-cache search compiz After that, I installed all the packages that appeared in the terminal window. I enjoyed all the effects of Compiz like Paint fire on screen, Desktop Cube, but I can't help but noticing people having some extra plugins which I don't have, such as Atlantis, Snow, Tile and much more.   When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! All my other programs work fine, and I saw this problem also on other computers. Is there a reason for this? Will it be fixed? I think it is an important issue for beginners. • How to break the "php is a bad language" paradigm? [closed]

  PHP is not a bad language (or at least not as bad as some may suggest). I had teachers that didn't even know PHP was object oriented until I told them. I've had clients that immediately distrust us when we say we are PHP developers and question us for not using chic languages and frameworks such as Django or RoR, or "enterprise and solid" languages such as Java and ASP.NET. Facebook is built on PHP. There are plenty of solid projects that power the web like Joomla and Drupal that are used in the enterprise and governments. There are frameworks and libraries that have some of the best architectures I've seen across all languages (Symfony 2, Doctrine). PHP has the best documentation I've seen and a big community of professionals. PHP has advanced OO features such as reflection, interfaces, let alone that PHP now supports horizontal reuse natively and cleanly through traits. There are bad programmers and script kiddies that give PHP a bad reputation, but power the PHP community at the same time, and because it is so easy to get stuff done PHP you can often do things the wrong way, granted, but why blame the language?. Now, to boil this down to an actual answerable question: what would be a good and solid and short and sweet argument to avoid being frowned upon and stop prejudice in one fell swoop and defend your honor when you say you are a PHP developer?.   A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? • Is the separation of program logic and presentation layer going too far?

  In a Drupal programming guide, I noticed this sentence: The theme hook receives the total number of votes and the number of votes for just that item, but the template wants to display a percentage. That kind of work shouldn't be done in a template; instead, the math is performed here. The math necessary to calculate a percentage from a total and a number is (number/total)*100. Is this application of two basic arithmetic operators within a presentation layer already too much? Is the maintenance of the entire system severely compromised by this amount of mathematics? The WPF (Windows Presentation Framework) and its UI mark-up language, XAML, seem to go to similar extremes. If you try to so much as add two numbers in the View (the presentation layer), you have committed a cardinal sin. Consequently, XAML has no operators for any arithmetic whatsoever. Is this ultra-strict separation really the holy grail of programming? What are the significant gains to be had from taking the separation to such extremes?

• SVG images grow and create scrollbars when on the server

  Okay so I embedded some SVG images into my page and opened it locally on Chrome and it looked fine. I upload the same file to the server and look at the page online and the SVG images have grown by maybe 5-10% and are surrounded by scroll bars like they are overflowing. I think it probably has to do with my lack of knowledge on how SVG and Embed work. What's really puzzling me though, is that it works fine locally. (I have cache disabled.) Help? Thanks. I'm not sure if I was just wrong before or if I changed something I'm not aware of, but it doesn't appear to be actually changing size anymore.   Setting up and managing an Ubuntu server all by myself, in coming months, is a part of my current plans. Hence, I am planning a swtich from Windows to Linux - - Ubuntu. I now need to get some grip on the command line, since I am all used to Windows' GUI. Anyway... the most obvious start is installing apps on my computer, and I thought I should learn to do it via CLI. And this is what I did: $ apt-cache search chrome browser the results showed that the proper term is "chrome-browser," so... $ sudo apt-get install chrome-browser And then "Y" for the Y/n question. But the installation threw errors. (I do not have my PC at hand, so can't mention what error exactly.) Does someone see anything wrong with the commands I issued? I am probably missing some command(s) in between, I think.

  I would like to start giving unique names to "cache-able" files - i.e. *.css and *.js - in order to prevent caching, without requiring changes to the web-server settings (as is currently done in IIS). For instance, let's I have a JavaScript file called global.js. Going forward I would like it to have the name global.123.js when revision 123 is checked in. This would also require the following: The previous version of the file - perhaps it was global.115.js - is removed when the file is deployed. • How does trilicense (mpl,gpl,lgpl) work when you want to use it on public website

  I have tried to search for this answer for quite some time and I have gone through all the various FAQ's and documentation regarding the three licenses; but none of them have been able to answer a question that I have. So I've been working an idea for a website for sometime now and recently I found open source software that has many of components that are similar. It is licensed under the mpl/gpl/lgpl licenses. I think for the most part I understand the ramifications, due to the searches and reading, of what is required if I modify/use and want to distribute the software. But what if I want to modify and not distribute, but use it on a public website that I generate ad revenue from? Is this illegal? It doesn't seem like it is from reading other open source system, say like Drupal, where they allow you to use the software but it's not considered "distribution" if people just go to the website. I know this site may not be the best resource and I've tried some other sites, but I haven't received any clear replies back. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. • Dynamic MMap ran out of room when trying to sudo apt-get anything

  I was having an error in Update Manager that asks me to do a partial upgrade and it fails. Now I can't sudo apt-get install anything. I tried to fix it, and now I can't sudo apt-get anything. Every time, I get this output: Reading package lists... Error! E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf) E: Error occurred while processing libuptimed0 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_universe_binary-i386_Packages W: Unable to munmap E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it, and I fear that if I try something that probably doesn't work that it will make my problem worse. (Just for reference I am currently running 10.04 (Lucid) on my machine.)

  Possible Duplicate: Only ‘sdb’ shows up when installing 12.04 on a new Dell inspiron 14z I am new to Linux and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a new HP Pavilion DV6TQE Ivy Bridge and being presented with the below screen which I believe is incorrect. My disk is set up as a basic disk (not dynamic) and I tried with a single C:\ partition and by creating a second partition in windows with no luck. Any ideas? UPDATE: I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it yet.. My hard drive has a 32gb mSSD cache which is listed as dev/sdb. for some reason this is causing the installation trouble.

• How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

  When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!
