  • MS Access 07 - Q re lookup column vs many-to-many; Q re checkboxes in many-to-many forms

    Hello, I'm creating a database with Access. This is just a test database, similar to my requirements, so I can get my skills up before creating one for work. I've created a database for a fictional school as this is a good playground and rich data (many students have many subjects have many teachers, etc). Question 1 What is the difference, if any, between using a Lookup column and a many-to-many associate table? Example: I have Tables 'Teacher' and 'Subject'. Many teachers have many subjects. I can, and have, created a table 'Teacher_Subject' and run queries with this. I have then created a lookup column in teachers table with data from subjects. The lookup column seems to take the place of the teacher_subject table. (though the data on relationships is obviously duplicated between lookup table and teacher_subject and may vary). Which one is the 'better' option? Is there a snag with using lookup tables? (I realize that this is a very 'general' question. Links to other resources and answers saying 'that depends...' are appreciated) Question 2 What attracts me to lookup tables is the following: When creating a form for entering subjects for teachers, with lookup I can simply create checkboxes and click a subject for a teacher 'on' or 'off'. Each click on/off creates/removes a record in the lookup column (which replaces teacher_subject). If I use a form from a query from teacher subject with teacher as main form and subject as subform I run into this problem: In the subform I can either select each subject that teacher has in a bombo box, i.e. click, scroll down, select, go to next row, click, scroll down, etc. (takes too long) OR I can create a list box listing all available subjects in each row but allowing me to select only one. (takes up too much space). Is it possible to have a click on/off list box for teacher_subject, creating/removing a record there with each click? Note - I know zero SQL or VB. If the correct answer is "you need to know SQL for this" then that's cool. I just need to know. Thanks!

  • How can I tell when the Text of a System.Windows.Forms.GroupBox wraps to the next line?

    I'm creating a GroupBox at runtime and setting its Text property. Usually, the text is only on one line, but sometimes it wraps. The problem is that the controls contained in the GroupBox cover up the GroupBox's text. What I'd like to do is determine if and when the text wraps. Specifically, I'd like to determine how much extra height the wrapped text takes up as compared to a single line. That way, I can reposition the GroupBox's controls and adjust its height. Initially, I thought I'd do this by calling the GroupBox's CreateGraphics() method, and using the Graphics to measure the string. Something like this: private void SetGroupBoxText(GroupBox grp, string text) { const int somePadding = 10; Graphics g = grp.CreateGraphics(); SizeF textSize = g.MeasureString(text, grp.Font); if (textSize.Width > (grp.Width - somePadding)) { // Adjust height, etc. } } The problem is that the size generated by g.MeasureString(text, grp.Font) doesn't seem to be accurate. I determined that it wasn't accurate by putting enough of a single character to cause a wrap, then measuring the resulting string. For example, it took 86 pipes (|) to until a wrap happened. When I measured that string, its width was ~253. And it took 16 capital W's to force a wrap - its string had a width of ~164. These were the two extremes that I tested. My GroupBox's width was 189. (a's took 29 and had a width of ~180, O's took 22 and had a width of ~189) Does anyone have any ideas? (hacks, WinAPI, etc. are welcome solutions)

  • How do I avoid nesting forms when offering inline editing of lists with checkboxes for mass updates.

    A lot of sites offer the ability to edit lists of items inline as well as allowing multiple items to be selected via checkboxes and have an action performed all at once e.g. delete, mark as spam etc. But how do you implement this without violating html rules. I need one form for the checkboxes with individual submit_tags for the mass actions. But after a user clicks on an item in the list, another form via Ajax will be inserted within the checkbox form. How do I avoid doing this? I'm using rails and jQuery.

  • Is there a Designer for MFC in Visual Studio like for windows forms in .NET?

    I'm a .NET programmer. I've never developed anything in MFC. Currently I had to write a C++ application (console) for some image processing task. I finished writing it. But the point is I need to design GUI also for this. Well, there won't be anything complex. Just a window with few Buttons, RadioButtons, Check Boxes, PicturesBox & few sliders. thats it. I'm using VS 2008 and was expecting a .NET style form designer. Just to test, I created a MFC project (with all default configuration) and these files were created by default: ChildFrm.cpp MainFrm.cpp mfc.cpp mfcDoc.cpp mfcView.cpp stdafx.cpp Now, I'm unable to find a Designer. There is no View Designer. I've opened all the above *.cpp and in the code editor right clicked to see "Designer View". ToolBox is just empty because I'm in code editor mode. When I built the project. This is the window I get. How to open a designer?

  • Regular Expression to recognise truncated forms of search string?

    I'm trying to formulate a regular expression which will recognise the search term truncated by any number of characters from the right. For example, if the search term is "pickle", the regex should recognise "pi", "pick" but not "pickaxe". Initially I came up with the following: p(i(c(k(l(e)?)?)?)?)? That works perfectly, but seems a crude way of doing it. Is there a better way of doing this? I had a look around for something similar to what I want, but I'm not entirely sure what to search for.

  • How can I use multithreading in a Windows Forms application to update a progress bar?

    There are two objects. The Windows Form with a button and a progress bar, and another object that handles an algorithm. In the algorithm object there is an event, and a property. The event is ProgressChanged, and the property is Progress (which is an int). In the calling window, the button starts off a set of steps in the algorithm object. As each step (or substeps) occurs, the ProgressChanged event fires, and in the window there is an event handler that essentially increments the progress bar relative to the Progress property. The problem I am running into is that because the algorithm has a possibility (and high liklihood) of running a relatively long time, I need to move it into it's own background thread and push the event back up to the window. My issue is that I'm not completely sure what I'm doing when it comes to multi-threading. I've looked at Control.Invoke and I'm a little lost. Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Hey everyone, I programmed an hour-sheet application and now I would like to publish it so people can install and run it. I've tried the publish function of visual studio 2008 but this gives me a clickOnce application/installer that's really confusing, but it works when I run it, but when I export the installer to another pc it installs it crashes at the end of the install. so I tried just coping the installed files but then the program crashes at startup. Is there a simple way to compile the application to a simple standalone executable or maybe containing a separate folder containing the resources (images/classes)?

    I have seen many responses that say that prefixing variables with their type is bad, since C# is statically typed and we have Intellisense, but I find that prefixing the names of the controls is useful because I don't need to remember the name of the controls or switch to the designer frequently. For example: btnLoad // Button tbFilePath // TextBox tvFileSystem // TreeView Is this considered bad? If it is, what's the alternative?

    So, I have a form, to make it a little more secure and potentially help prevent CSRF attacks I want to add a random token value in a hidden field that value is also stored server side in my session data. When should I issue a new token? Per form? Per page load where there is any form? Per session? I can render it invalid as soon as a form is successfully submitted but I'm wondering when to generate one. I ask as if I issue it per form or per page do I not risk the chance of a duplicate token value overwriting the existing (valid) token if a user opens a separate window but submitting the first form (with the now overwritten value)?

    I have localized localized a Form into two language by setting the Localizable property to True and setting the Language from (Default) to (Dutch(Netherlands)), and I changed the control texts. Visual Studio generated the resource files and compiles them into the application. I need to get a simple list of all the languages that my form has been localized into. Currently it would be just two English and Dutch, but more may come. I need to programatically get a list of "what languages my application is localized into". Do I look into the resource files or use ResourceManager or what? Thanks!

    Hi, this has me pretty confused and I can't find the answer anywhere else so thought I'd post here to see if anyone can help! I have a form in an Access 2007 database with a subform (sfSubform) embedded in it. The subform control's SourceObject is set to be another form (fForm). fForm's RecordSource starts out as a table. At one point I want to change the data displayed in the subform to the result of a SQL statement, so I use sfSubform.Form.RecordSource = strSQL. This works fine. However, if I ouput the name of the RecordSource for fForm after making this change, it still gives the name of the table that I orginially set. Does sfSubform.Form.RecordSource not change the source of fForm? Is it a copy of fForm that is embedded in the control? Hope all that makes sense.

  • Doing a DELETE request from <a> tag without constructing forms?

    Is there any way to force an <a href> to do a delete request when clicked instead of a regular GET? The "Rails" way is to dynamically generate a <form> tag that adds the appropriate params so that it gets routed to the right place, however I'm not too fond of that much DOM manipulation for such a simple task. I thought about going the route of something like: $("a.delete").click(function(){ var do_refresh = false; $.ajax({ type: "DELETE", url: "my/path/to/delete", success: function(){ do_refresh = true; }, failure: function(){ alert("There is an error"); } }); return do_return; //If this is false, no refresh would happen. If it //is true, it will do a page refresh. }); I'm not sure if the above AJAX stuff will work, as it's just theoretical. Is there any way to go about this? Note: Please don't recommend that I use the rails :method => :delete on link_to, as I'm trying to get away from using the rails helpers in many senses as they pollute your DOM with obtrusive javascript. I'd like this solution to be put in an external JS file and be included as needed.

I know that you cannot use more than one extends, but I am new to django and I do not know the proper syntax for something like this. I want to be able to do this so that I can use my nested div layout for css reasons without having to type it like that each time and risking a typo.   • Dynamically creating a Generic Type at Runtime

    I learned something new today. Not uncommon, but it's a core .NET runtime feature I simply did not know although I know I've run into this issue a few times and worked around it in other ways. Today there was no working around it and a few folks on Twitter pointed me in the right direction. The question I ran into is: How do I create a type instance of a generic type when I have dynamically acquired the type at runtime? Yup it's not something that you do everyday, but when you're writing code that parses objects dynamically at runtime it comes up from time to time. In my case it's in the bowels of a custom JSON parser. After some thought triggered by a comment today I realized it would be fairly easy to implement two-way Dictionary parsing for most concrete dictionary types. I could use a custom Dictionary serialization format that serializes as an array of key/value objects. Basically I can use a custom type (that matches the JSON signature) to hold my parsed dictionary data and then add it to the actual dictionary when parsing is complete. Generic Types at Runtime One issue that came up in the process was how to figure out what type the Dictionary<K,V> generic parameters take. Reflection actually makes it fairly easy to figure out generic types at runtime with code like this: if (arrayType.GetInterface("IDictionary") != null) { if (arrayType.IsGenericType) { var keyType = arrayType.GetGenericArguments()[0]; var valueType = arrayType.GetGenericArguments()[1]; … } } The GetArrayType method gets passed a type instance that is the array or array-like object that is rendered in JSON as an array (which includes IList, IDictionary, IDataReader and a few others). In my case the type passed would be something like Dictionary<string, CustomerEntity>. So I know what the parent container class type is. Based on the the container type using it's then possible to use GetGenericTypeArguments() to retrieve all the generic types in sequential order of definition (ie. string, CustomerEntity). That's the easy part. Creating a Generic Type and Providing Generic Parameters at RunTime The next problem is how do I get a concrete type instance for the generic type? I know what the type name and I have a type instance is but it's generic, so how do I get a type reference to keyvaluepair<K,V> that is specific to the keyType and valueType above? Here are a couple of things that come to mind but that don't work (and yes I tried that unsuccessfully first): Type elementType = typeof(keyvalue<keyType, valueType>); Type elementType = typeof(keyvalue<typeof(keyType), typeof(valueType)>); The problem is that this explicit syntax expects a type literal not some dynamic runtime value, so both of the above won't even compile. I turns out the way to create a generic type at runtime is using a fancy bit of syntax that until today I was completely unaware of: Type elementType = typeof(keyvalue<,>).MakeGenericType(keyType, valueType); The key is the type(keyvalue<,>) bit which looks weird at best. It works however and produces a non-generic type reference. You can see the difference between the full generic type and the non-typed (?) generic type in the debugger: The nonGenericType doesn't show any type specialization, while the elementType type shows the string, CustomerEntity (truncated above) in the type name. Once the full type reference exists (elementType) it's then easy to create an instance. In my case the parser parses through the JSON and when it completes parsing the value/object it creates a new keyvalue<T,V> instance. Now that I know the element type that's pretty trivial with: // Objects start out null until we find the opening tag resultObject = Activator.CreateInstance(elementType); Here the result object is picked up by the JSON array parser which creates an instance of the child object (keyvalue<K,V>) and then parses and assigns values from the JSON document using the types  key/value property signature. Internally the parser then takes each individually parsed item and adds it to a list of  List<keyvalue<K,V>> items. Parsing through a Generic type when you only have Runtime Type Information When parsing of the JSON array is done, the List needs to be turned into a defacto Dictionary<K,V>. This should be easy since I know that I'm dealing with an IDictionary, and I know the generic types for the key and value. The problem is again though that this needs to happen at runtime which would mean using several Convert.ChangeType() calls in the code to dynamically cast at runtime. Yuk. In the end I decided the easier and probably only slightly slower way to do this is a to use the dynamic type to collect the items and assign them to avoid all the dynamic casting madness: else if (IsIDictionary) { IDictionary dict = Activator.CreateInstance(arrayType) as IDictionary; foreach (dynamic item in items) { dict.Add(item.key, item.value); } return dict; } This code creates an instance of the generic dictionary type first, then loops through all of my custom keyvalue<K,V> items and assigns them to the actual dictionary. By using Dynamic here I can side step all the explicit type conversions that would be required in the three highlighted areas (not to mention that this nested method doesn't have access to the dictionary item generic types here). Static <- -> Dynamic Dynamic casting in a static language like C# is a bitch to say the least. This is one of the few times when I've cursed static typing and the arcane syntax that's required to coax types into the right format. It works but it's pretty nasty code. If it weren't for dynamic that last bit of code would have been a pretty ugly as well with a bunch of Convert.ChangeType() calls to litter the code. Fortunately this type of type convulsion is rather rare and reserved for system level code.   • UserAppDataPath in WPF

    In Windows Forms applications you were able to get to your user's roaming profile directory very easily using the Application.UserAppDataPath property. This folder allows you to store information for your program in a custom folder specifically for your program. The format of this directory looks like this: C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\COMPANY NAME\APPLICATION NAME\APPLICATION VERSION For example, on my Windows 7 64-bit system, this folder would look like this for a Windows Forms Application: C:\Users\PSheriff\AppData\Roaming\PDSA, Inc.\WindowsFormsApplication1\1.0.0.0 For some reason Microsoft did not expose this property from the Application object of WPF applications. I guess they think that we don't need this property in WPF? Well, sometimes we still do need to get at this folder. You have two choices on how to retrieve this property. Add a reference to the System.Windows.Forms.dll to your WPF application and use this property directly. Or, you can write your own method to build the same path. If you add a reference to the System.Windows.Forms.dll you will need to use System.Windows.Forms.Application.UserAppDataPath to access this property. Create a GetUserAppDataPath Method in WPF If you want to build this path you can do so with just a few method calls in WPF using Reflection. The code below shows this fairly simple method to retrieve the same folder as shown above. I need to minimize or resize it in order to remove the shadow of FolderBrowserDialog. How can I solvet his issue? Any help plz?
