• Ubuntu 12.10 Unity Dash transparency problem

  I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 and there is following problem. When I press super button to show Unity Dash I get wrong background image behind the dash box. Especially I can see part of the bottom of the screen. Also when I set transparency to top panel the background behind is not correct. Here is an example with Mc Duck picture: Unity Mc Duck example Do you have any ideas whats wrong? • Draggable & Resizable Editors

  Thanks to a cool tip from Steven Yi (here in the comments to a blog entry), I was able to make a totally pointless but fun set of draggable and resizable editors: What you see above are two JEditorPanes within JPanels. The JPanels are within ComponentWidgets provided by the NetBeans Visual Library, which is also where the special border comes from. The ComponentWidgets are within a Visual Library Scene, which is within a JScrollPane in a TopComponent. Each editor has this, which means the NetBeans Java Editor is bound to the JEditorPane: jEditorPane1.setContentType("text/x-java"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/x-java"); jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit); jEditorPane1.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/x-java"); A similar thing is done in the other JEditorPane, i.e., it is bound to the XML Editor. While the XML Editor also has code completion, in addition to syntax coloring, as can be seen above, this is not the case for the JEditorPane bound to the Java Editor, since the JEditorPane doesn't have a Java classpath, which is needed for Java code completion to work.

• When to reply 400 Bad Request

  According to www.w3.org, a Web server should reply with status code 400 Bad Request if: "The request could not be understood by the server due to malformed syntax. The client SHOULD NOT repeat the request without modifications" Does that mean only request that violates some HTTP spec? Or does it include a request that my particular Web app thinks is broken? When would you reply 400? For example, if my Web app expects a query string to always include a "function=..." parameter, would you reply code 400 Bad Request or 403 Forbidden? (403 means that "The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it.")

• Second display is rotated

  I've just updated to Ubuntu 12.10 last night. When I was at the office, I connected my laptop with a projector. Although it can detect the projector, it incorrectly set the projector portrait. Also, if I click the Rotation dropdown, it has no Normal option. It only offered Anticlockwise and Clockwise options. Ofcourse the projector would display my desktop 90 degrees clockwise/anticlockwise. I've just test my laptop again with an LCD monitor, and it happened again. Below is my screenshot for display settings. My display adapter is Intel GMA 950. How to fix this problem?

• Black screen after select installing on a Dell Inspiron 14z

  I'm trying to do a dual boot on my Dell Inspiron 14z notebook, but I always get a black screen after selecting Install Ubuntu. I've tried to add nomodeset and acpi_osi="Linux" to the boot options, but it doesn't change anything. • Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

  Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. • Choice of node.js modules to demo flexibility

  I'm putting together a presentation to talk about and demo node.js to client-side JavaScript developers. The language concepts and syntax are not an issue for them, so instead I'd like to get right into things and show off node's abilities that differ from client-side scripting. There are numerous modules available in the NPM registry and many people have much more experience with the registry than I do. I'm looking for a selection of node modules based on recommendations from your experience that show a variety of uses for node that are practical, broadly useful and can be demonstrated with a small code sample without requiring much domain knowledge on behalf of the audience. Neat and impressive is good too - I can throw in a couple of shock and awe items for cool factor. To be fair, top-voted answers will get most consideration for inclusion. My hope is this will result in a well-rounded demonstration of node technology.

• Does 64-bit Ubuntu work on the Acer Aspire One D255

  The Acer Aspire One D255 is the cheapest dual core netbook on the market right now. It has an Intel Atom N550 which should be able to run a 64-bit OS. But when I try to boot the Ubuntu 64-bit live CD I only get one line of diagnostic output that it "found something" on the USB CD drive before locking up. I haven't been able to find anything by Googling yet. Could it just be driver issues for this machine or could the platform be inherently frail for running 64-bit? (My machine is two days old on trial and Windows 7 and Ubuntu 32-bit run but it has locked up under casual use on both OSes.)

I have been using windows for work and school for over a year, and have about 100 gig of stored files (backed up of course) and some paid programs. • Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea?   I have been exploring Clojure for a while now, although I haven't used it on any nontrivial projects. Basically, I have just been getting comfortable with the syntax and some of the idioms. Coming from an OOP background, with Clojure being the first functional language that I have looked very much into, I'm naturally not as comfortable with the functional way of doing things. That said, are there any specific workflows or design patterns that are common with creating large functional applications? I'd really like to start using functional programming "for real", but I'm afraid that with my current lack of expertise, it would result in an epic fail. The "Gang of Four" is such a standard for OO programmers, but is there anything similar that is more directed at the functional paradigm? Most of the resources that I have found have great programming nuggets, but they don't step back to give a broader, more architectural look.

• is there a bug with restart in edubuntu 12.04

  After a clean install of edubuntu 12.04 on an Acer AO531-h netbook, restart doesn't work. The process starts normally but just before it shuts down the netbook freezes and I have to force shut down. The command "sudo reboot" has the same problem. I have no issues with shut down, only with restart. I'm absolute beginner. Netbook specs: Acer, intel atom CPU N270 @1.60GHz, 1.05 GHz 0.98GB RAM Dual booting with windows xp. No problems with windows.

  I have a HP G62 laptop with Intel Pentium processor and ATI graphics. Since upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10, my Unity menu is very slow and unresponsive. I am using proprietary driver for my graphics For example, I'm switching between Gimp and Chrome. When I switch to Gimp, I will be stuck with Chrome menu at the top of the screen. It is really annoying and it is just one of many bugs that came up with 13.10. Any ideas? Should I just revert to default driver?

• Fan very loud in Ubuntu 12.10

  I recently installed 12.10 on my Desktop PC, moving away from Windows 7. For some reason, the fan in my computer is making an enormous amount of noise (it is running at full speed constantly). Under Windows 7, the fan would slow itself down and run at an acceptable noise level. Now, it is nearly unbearable. Checked the processes, and none are taking up a huge load on the CPU. • Upgraded Ubuntu 12.04 -> 12.10 and Drupal 7 site now get error

  I do all my Drupal 7 webdev and today I took advantage to upgrade my local WebDev box O/S to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04 and now I get the following errors for all my D7 projects on my localhost WebDev box (Ubuntu 12.10) It was all fine pre Ubuntu 12.04: Error The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later. Error message PDOException: SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1286 Unknown storage engine 'InnoDB': SELECT expire, value FROM {semaphore} WHERE name = :name; Array ( [:name] => variable_init ) in lock_may_be_available() (line 167 of /var/www/jobsdaily/includes/lock.inc). A quick research and look into the phpmyadmin (3.4.11.1) and it seems InnoDB is an issue and when I click on a table to see data I get #1286 - Unknown storage engine 'InnoDB'. I have all my D7 sql backed up, but don't really want to go down the whole 'import' route, since it's 10 months work! Anyone had this issues and can anyone suggest fix ideas? Thanks
