• Can squid forward DNS queries to a DNS server?

  This might something be completely impossible to achieve, but before I give it a shot thought I might get some advice from a fellow geek. Would squid proxy DNS queries as well? I would like to forward DNS queries to go through squid and use squid's DNS error page, of course by customizing it. I see the DNS queries are hitting my squid box on UDP port 53. I can setup a port forwarding so that all these queries get sent to squid's port 3128. But would squid understand its a DNS query and forward those queries to the dns server set in squid.conf? I hope my question is clear but please shout up and I would be glad to give you some more info if needed. Thanks guys!

• Add DNS suffixes to a Sonicwall PRO2040 firewall?

  I want to have our network pass out DNS suffixes with the DHCP assignments, so that we don't need to add them to the TCP/IP settings on each computer. Our DHCP is not being handled by an actual server box, but by our Sonicwall firewall, which is a PRO 2040. Can this firewall be set up to append DNS suffixes? Thanks!

  I've setup my new LAMP server on Rackspace Cloud and the Basic A, C and MX DNS setup is no problem. I need to add an SPF record for a project I am migrating over to this new server that allows emails from a 3rd party server and I can't seem to figure out how to do this. There doesn't seem to be an option to add a TXT record in my Rackspace Cloud Server interface and I installed the BIND DNS on my Apache server, but I am not sure how to get that to been seen, etc.

  As I'm writing this our company website and the web-service we developed are down in the big GoDaddy outage resulting from an Anonymous attack (or so says Twitter). We used GoDaddy as our registrar and we use it for DNS for some domains. Tomorrow is a new day - what can we do to mitigate such outages? Simply moving to, say, Route 53 for DNS might not be enough. Is there any way to remove this single point of failure?

• DHCP and DNS on none AD 2003 Server PTR is updating but no A records

  I have a strange issue, I have a DHCP and DNS server running in a non AD environment, on Windows 2003 server. I setup DHCP to update DNS A and PTR records even if the client doesnt request it, but I only see PTR records updated, the A records are not created at all. The domain is "local" forward zone is called "local" and in the option 15 set to "local" (actual name) the PTR records are created with the right name (example: win64_ent.local), What am I missing here ?

  *.in-addr.arpa domains: lot of requests in my OpenDNS account. I know this should be normal and it's about reverse DNS. I've been reading here and there but still I can't really get how it works and why I get so much requests (higher number than www.google.com). I'd just need someone that, like Einstein suggested, could explain to me what this reverse dns is used for like he would explain it to his grandmother :) Thanks a lot!

  I'm doing a test deploy on a Lab with 3 VMs: TEST-DC: DC / DHCP / DNS / Root CA (Joined to TEST.AD Domain) TEST-CS: OCS Front End (Joined to TEST.AD Domain - IP: 10.0.128.1) TEST-EDGES: OCS Edge Server (Joined to Workgroup: EDGE-WKG - Internal IP: 10.0.128.3, External IPs: 192.168.129.12 - Access Edge Server, 192.168.129.13 - Web Conferencing, 192.168.129.14 - A/V) I can login with the Communicator Client from within computers in the domain (using [email protected]) and even the Automatic Sign-In works as expected. Nevertheless, I cannot login neither from within machines in the domain nor from outside the domain using [email protected].   This is puzzling me a bit. We are running server 2003 DNS/DHCP and normally we disable IPV6 on the client end. But I have just noticed with windows 7 and server 2008 R2 if I disable IPv6 then it registers an 6TO4 address in DNS not its Standard IP address. If I enable IPv6 it registers its ip.   Hi all, We have a client we host a web for (blog.foobar.es). We do not manage foobar.es's DNS setup, we just told them to point blog.foobar.es to our web server's IP. We have noticed that sometimes we cannot browse to blog.foobar.es, but we can browse to other sites on that server. Troubleshooting a bit using host(1) yields something funny: $ host blog.foobar.es 8.8.8.8 Using domain server: Name: 8.8.8.8 Address: 8.8.8.8#53 Aliases: Host blog.foobar.es not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) , being 8.8.8.8 one of Google's public DNS servers. However, sometimes the same server resolves the name correctly (!). Another funny thing, is that our ISP's DNS servers sometimes say: $ host blog.foobar.es 80.58.61.250 Using domain server: Name: 80.58.61.250 Address: 80.58.61.250#53 Aliases: blog.foobar.es has address x.x.x.x Host blog.foobar.es not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) Which I don't really understand.   I set up a new DNS entry for one of my subdomains (I haven't set up any Apache virtual hosts or anything like that yet). How can I check that the DNS information has propagated? I assumed that I could simply ping my.subdomain.com and assume that if it could resolve, it would show the IP address I specified in the A record. However, I don't know if I am assuming correctly.
