  • Firefox trying to download local .swf files

    I'm quite annoyed with my firefox and Flash files : When I try opening a .swf file with it: If the file is on the web (via http://...), it plays normally in browser If the file is local (via file:///...), firefox only show me a dialog to download it It tried opening a web swf file, downloading it then opening it locally, it's the same. So I guess it's a firefox problem. I'm on Gentoo Linux, and it started today, without any apparent reason.

  • "When firefox starts" setting does not last after a reboot

    I have set the "when firefox starts" and "home page" values, but when I reboot the computer (or more accurately, when I restart the computer as it has been crashing frequently of late), those values get reset to some default value which I don't want. If I close Firefox then reopen, the correct values appear. How I do store the values over reboots? The values are when firefox starts: show a blank page home page: about:blank I'm still using Windows XP so there's no problem about directory permissions.

    I would like to install some Firefox add-ons, also called 'extensions' or 'plugins', like for example Adblock Plus, Ubufox or Greasemonkey. Should I install them from the Mozilla website, using the Firefox browser, or should I search Firefox in the Software Center and then select the interesting applications ? I suppose the issue is about how the extensions are kept up-to-date. If your answer is 'via the Software Center', how can I migrate well from my former add-ons without losing all my preferences?

  • pros-cons of separate hosting accounts versus using addon domain

    Folks: For historical reasons, I have "Site A" on "Hosting Account A", and "Site B" on "Account B", totally independent accounts with the same vendor, Bluehost. Both are primary domains. Now that Hosting Account B is just about to expire, I'm considering letting it disappear and moving Site B to an Addon domain on "Account A". Both sites are non-commercial, narrow-interest, very-low-traffic, hundreds of page views per month. The file weights for the sites are non-trivial, especially as I like to install specialized CMSs in subdomains. Since Bluehost allows unlimited hosting space there should be no issue with the file load, except I've seen hints of an issue with total file count, maybe 50k files -- which I'm not currently close to hitting, but might eventually. My question: what are the pros and cons of using separate accounts versus hosting Site B as an addon domain? Obviously, using a single account is cheaper by half, and I know that my authoring environment (DreamWeaver CS5) complains when it detects nested source trees, telling me "Synchronization" might fail in such cases, but I don't depend on this feature. What other factors should I consider? TIA

  • How Do I Install Latest Java Plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS with Custom Firefox 3.6.3?

    I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and will need to remain on that for awhile as I am a programmer and cannot disturb what I'm doing in the middle of a project. As you know, it doesn't want to install the latest Firefox by default and keeps me in the stone age. So, I had to install my own Firefox. I did so and with relative ease I was able to install the Flash plugin using the normal 'ln -s' technique one usually does with /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. Now I need to do a Gotomypc.com task and it requires Java -- moan -- so I need to figure out how to install Java. I downloaded and installed the latest Java plugin in /usr/java, and I do see underneath that layer of folders a plugins folder with a .so file. So, I went to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and did this: ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_20/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so Then, I also read on the web that one has to create a ~/.mozilla/plugins folder, cd into it, and then run the same ln -s command again. Another site recommended finding one's ~/.mozilla/firefox and renaming it to ~/.mozilla/firefox.old (after you backed up your bookmarks) and then launching firefox again so that it creates ~/.mozilla/firefox and uses the new Java plugin. Well, all these attempts have completely failed and it is incredibly frustrating. I do about:plugins to see my plugins and all I get are the Flash and the default null plugin. I do not see the Java one. Also, they said on my tools menu with Firefox 3.6.3 I would see a Java Console menu and I don't see that either. I found a pluginreg.dat somewhere deep under ~/.mozilla/firefox, but it does not list the Java plugin inside -- only Flash and the null plugin. Please help me install Java. I need to help a client out and need to connect to his PC remotely with gotomypc, which requires Java inside firefox.

  • When tab groups are loaded, Firefox becomes unresponsible for minutes (Unresponsive script)

    I have several tab groups (~ 20) in Firefox. I can start the browser without any problems. However, as soon as I … click at the "Group tabs" icon in the toolbar, or right-click on a tab and hover over "Move to tab group", … Firefox becomes unresponsible/freezes for a rather long time (more than 2 minutes). It seems to load all tab groups (it doesn't load all the pages! I deactivated this in the settings). While this is happening, I get several "Unresponsive script" warnings, like: Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:0 (most of the time) Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/tabbox.xml:418 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:400 Script: chrome://browser/content/tabview.js:522 Script: resource://modules/sessionstore/SessionStore.jsm:3578 Script: resource:///components/PageThumbsProtocol.js:79 (rare) Script: resource://gre/modules/XPCOMUtils.jsm:323 (rare) (probably also other warnings, didn't record them yet, though) On all of these I click "Continue". After ~ 2-3 minutes and 3-5 warnings, I can use Firefox again. Now I can switch tab groups without any problems. Why is this happening? How can I prevent the long loading time? Is there maybe a about:config setting I could try? I started Firefox in Safe Mode (= without any add-ons): the problem still exists.

  • How to fix Firefox Blue Screen of Death?

    I am running Windows XP SP3 and Firefox v3.6.2 and have an issue with Firefox causing the Blue Screen of Death. If I run in Windows safe mode, it does not occur, but running normally, it seems my firefox profile is going bad and results in certain web pages causing the BSOD. For example, presently, if I visit ebay.com, it gets BSOD. Before it was happening on google.com, but IT removed my Firefox profile and that seemed to fix the Google failure. However, now it has started occurring on ebay. I turned off all extensions and it still occurs. I'd like to fix my system so this does not occur. The IT folks don't seem to be able to solve this, so I am trying to fix it on my own. The BSOD is about something like (from memory) IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL. Why would safe mode avoid the issue and what does that tell us about the probable cause? I don't want to have to keep deleting my profile, so I'd like to find out the cause of the corruption.

  • Gmail and FB is not rendering properly in Firefox

    I am unable read Gmail in my Firefox browser on my laptop. However, there are no problems when I try to access Gmail on my office desktop. In fact, Gmail renders fine on IE on both computers. Things I have tried: Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. Using Firefox 3.6.26 and Firefox 10; same problem. Clearing the cache. But all to no avail. For starters: My background image does not get loaded. It says "Oops. Your selected image failed to load". The buttons for the new look do not get rendered, but when I do a mouse-over I see text which helps me navigate. When I try to read a message, I see the subject line and I see the reply / forward box. The message body does not get rendered, it seems like a styling error.   • Strange focus bug in Firefox (chrome vs content)

    Here is a strange bug I'm experiencing in Firefox: I can only use either the chrome, or the content, not both at the same time! For example, I can click on tabs and the toolbar icons, focus the search bar and write in it as well as the address bar, but if I try to click on anything in the content (eg a link or a textfield to write something), then nothing happens. The mouse pointer doesn't change either, it just stays a pointer when I hover over things, and the links I hover don't react either. But if I alt-tab to another program (or click on it in the taskbar), then back to Firefox, then I can use the area that I click on. So if I click somewhere on the webpage to get focus back to Firefox, then I can click on links and write things (like this text), but I cannot click on tabs or refresh or anything else in the chrome. I can't even click on the minimize, restore and close icons! To get focus back on the chrome I have to alt-tab to another program, and then click on the chrome to get back to Firefox to be able to use the chrome again. I've tried closing and starting it again, but the bug is still there. I have experienced this before, but I don't remember what I did to fix it. This bug seems to occur sometimes when I wake up the computer from standby, but I leave by computer in standby all the time, so that is not the only factor.

    I need to run Firefox in my server in order to execute some Selenium tests from Hudson. I would love no to have to install a complete gui. So I installed Xvfb in order to fake the Gui (I understand it this way correct me if my assumptions are wrong).     If you don't know what Khan Academy is, check it out. It's awesome. (For testing purpose you may view any video on the website.) My problem -- it's a minor problem, but annoying -- is that in Firefox (Windows 7), the icons below the video are shown as boxes with hex codes in them. This means the icons come from some font that isn't getting downloaded by Firefox. How it appears on Chrome (Windows 7), Safari (Mac OS X) and Stainless (Mac OS X): I checked out the source and found that the font in question is called "FontAwesome". I found this question in S.O. that may explain why this happens -- the CSS does use single quotes to enclose the font's src location. However I don't have any write access to Khan Academy servers so I can't modify the actual website. I want to know if this can be fixed in Firefox, and how. I can run Greasemonkey scripts if that would help. Also, would manually downloading the font and adding it to Windows' Fonts folder help? I tried this with the TTF font, and it does not help.   • Firefox 3.6.3 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - symbolic link to command line binary doesn't work?

    I have Firefox 10.6.3 installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the DMG. I can run firefox from the terminal using /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin. However, if I create a symbolic link: sudo ln -s /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin /bin/firefox then it refuses to run, or at least display. When I issue "firefox" from the terminal, I can see the process in top, but never get the GUI to appear. :/ = ls -lr /bin/firefox lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 52 May 5 15:19 /bin/firefox - /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin Any ideas?   • Did Firefox running in OSX get hacked

    When I try to do a google search in Firefox, I can't click on any of the links. They're just regular black text, not hyperlinks. I even tried safe mode and disabling all the plugins. I was running Firefox 12. I installed the current version over it and it's the same thing. Other browsers have not been affected. This is what it looks like. Edit: My firewall was turned off and I had several things running which are potential security holes. I turned on my firewall and closed all unnecessary ports. I also turned off Home Sharing. Then I restarted my computer. After that, Firefox works normally again. What do you think happened?

    Hi, I'm a Firefox user since several years so I know it but today I had a strange problem. I installed the last stable version of Firefox (3.5.5) on a computer but when I launch the browser the page stay empty (blank). In the settings I set the startpage as Google but nothing to do. When the browser starts in the address bar it is well written google.com but the page remains blank. I must click on the button in the address bar so that the site appears. I've never had this problem with Firefox, it's strange. Thanks

  • Unable to click on tabs in Firefox unless I press Command-Q

    Why does clicking on tabs in Firefox sometimes fail until I hit cmd-Q, and then why does that not quit but instead make clicking on the tabs work, and how do I stop that behavior? I'm running Firefox 3.5.5 on Mac OS X 10.5 and this has been happening for a while (with previous versions of FF as well). I can't forcibly reproduce the behavior, but every now and then (few days?) I just can't click on tabs or on the x's to close the tabs. I can still ctrl-tab between tabs, though. But if I press cmd-Q, instead of quitting, Firefox seems to seize for a second and then I can click on tabs and click to close them just fine. No clue why this is happening or how to stop it. And I do have tons of extensions installed, so it's plausible one of them is the problem..... Thanks.

    Hi all, I want to uninstall Firefox 3.5.6 in favor of Opera 10.10. However, I've went into Control Panel Add or Remove Programs and tried clicking Remove from there, but nothing happens. I go into the Program Files for FIrefox and find the Uninstaller folder and click the helper.exe found in there. Still, nothing happens. Is there some possible way to uninstall Firefox without screwing up the rest of my computer? Computer is a EMACHINES T2482: http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T2482 RAM has been upgraded to 1 GB PC3200 DDR, GPU has been upgraded to 128MB GeForce 6200, HDD has been upgraded to 160 GB, PSU has been upgraded to 350W and Floppy and DVD Reader have been disconnected from mobo and power.   • Windows Live Mail treating my Firefox as mobile device

    I started using Namoroka (firefox 3.6 nighly) yesterday and since then, windows live mail has been treating it like a mobile device. Same thing happens when I try with Minefield (firefox 4 nightly). I've tried loading the default page in Chromium and then pasting the URL to firefox. The sign in page shows alright then, but as soon as I sign in, the mobile inbox shows up again. I've tried clearing the cache+history+cookies everything but nothing's working. Anyone know of a solution?

  • Firefox being really sluggish on php.net website?

    Is it just me, or is firefox (3.5 on Ubuntu 9.10 karmic) really sluggish when opening the PHP.net website? When I have several tabs open with just the PHP.net website, and I tab up and down (with Control-PageUp/Down), it's slow to change tab. If I do it quickly, then firefox freezes for a few seconds (I know because it goes grey, which is a compiz feature to show unresponsive windows). The CPU usage also goes up when I'm tabbing to PHP.net pages. UPDATE: This appears to happen for all PHP.net webpages. For other pages, on other sites, Firefox is fine (for me).
