  • Video player with good subtitle rendering

    Is there any way to improve the subtitle rendering capabilities of Totem? The subtitles positioning seems to be hard-coded in it and even though the style is user-customizable, it does not confirm to the formatting in subtitle data. In some scenes where writings appear, the subtitles are supposed to appear next to those along with what is being said at that moment. However, on those scenes the translations of text onscreen appears on the default subtitle area with nothing about the things being said. The correct rendering are according to the open-source Windows video player, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. There are no Linux port as far as I'm aware. If VLC's subtitle support is the same as in Windows, it won't work for me, period. Please suggest anyway to improve subtitle rendering in Totem, other video players, or a way to port MPC-HC.

  • All video players display black screen.

    I'm working in 10.04 Lucid. All my video players (Movie Player and VLC) and the preview windows in editors (OpenShot and Pitivi) will only display a black screen when playing a video. The sound is fine and the videos work fine on other computers. I have tried multiple formats from varying sources .MOV taken from old ffmpeg projects, .AVI straight from a camera, .MP4 using h.264 from OpenShot on another system, .OGV from a gtk-recordmydesktop session on this very computer. I even get a pure black screen in the viewer when starting a remote session in VNC. This box has a GeForce 8400 GS using the Nvidia drivers in case it may be a card problem or setting.

  • HD Video Peformance Unacceptable

    Was wondering if anyone could help me boost HD 1080p video performance on my machine? I've got an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core processor, 2 gb RAM & an ATI Radeon 5450 video card. I've installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, I installed the hardware acceleration things and linked them (I believe) to VLC. Still, it's still not running as well as I would like. Any thoughts or suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • convert video file to .ogg

    I've been having trouble with this because I'm new to Linux: I would like to convert different video formats to ogv. I found some terminal commands like this: ffmpeg -i input.avi -acodec libvorbis -ac 1 -b 768k output.ogg The problem with these type of commands is that they are intended to change bit rate, fps, or even resolution. I would like to just change the file format without changing anything else about the video. I looked at the man pages for ffmpeg and found some useful info but I don't know how to space command-line options. Are there any easy ways to do this? In addition, is there a command to change the bit rate so that it doesn't go over a certain rate?

  • FFMPEG not extracting part of the video

    I used FFMPEG to extract portion (5 seconds) of a video like this: ffmpeg -ss 00:30:00 -t 00:00:05 -i original.avi cut1.avi and also like this: ffmpeg -ss 1800 -t 5 -i original.avi cut1.avi But what FFMPEG did was create a file starting at 00:30:00 and included the rest of the file instead of just 5 seconds. So instead of having a 5 second video clip, I now have the whole file except the first 30 minutes. What went wrong? I tried this with mencoder as well -- same result. EDIT 1 Strangely, this worked on OS X....

    I use Lenovo Ideapad Z580A with hybrid video: GeForce+Intel with Ubuntu 12.10 x64 Ukrainian. It has internal display and two outputs: HDMI and VGA. When I connect third display to VGA all displays go black. Pressing alt+backspace and login causes output to two displays: internal and VGA. System Settings - Displays (or monitors - I have Ukrainian interface) shows three displays: two are on, one (DVI) is off. Turning DVI on and pressing apply causes an error: Can not set configuration of controller CRTC 65. BIOS setting is Optimus (two video cards). Driver for GeForce is Nouveau. With best regards.     I started using Ubuntu a very short time ago, and it was working perfectly! I upgraded to 12.04 yesterday, and today I realize that everything is running slow. For example, video streaming online, from sites such as Youtube is not working correctly, audio and video breaks constantly. I have a 64 bit system, with a Intel® Core™2 Duo, 2.10GHz × 2 . I don't know what more to add. I tried free -m on the terminal, it returned that I had only 524MB free from 3858MB. All that i have running at this point is Mozilla Firefox.

  • Need new method for linking to native mapping from mobile web app

    My mobile web apps use a map button which automatically starts the mapping features of Android and iPhone by simply linking to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York. iOs 6 comes out, the links stop working, because Apple wants us to use "maps.APPLE.com". Turns out ANYTHING you send to "maps.apple.com" gets forwarded to "maps.google.com". So now I have to specially detect iOs 6 and swap out links just so Apple can forward everything back to Google anyway. Is there a clean way to open the device/native mapping app from a mobile web app that works on Android, iOs 6, and iOs pre-6, since iOs 6 nerfed it?   • Extremely large spike in traffic on the 1st - 4th of every month from mobile browsers

    I've noticed that on the 1st - 4th of the recent months (since January), several sites I maintain are getting thousands of requests from mobile browsers, whereas throughout the rest of the month, the numbers are in the single or double digits. Has anybody else noticed this sort of behavior? I don't have the exact user agents logged, but my analysis software (WebTrends) reports the traffic as mostly iPhone/iPad/iPod, Android, and Blackberry.

  • HTML5 video capture and streaming?

    I'm working on kind of an educational site, where there are teachers and students around the world (potentially). Since it's a non-profit site, and I don't have the need for it to be done tomorrow (kind of a side project of something bigger), I wanted to know the best way to figure out how to do this. I'm not a programmer by trade, I've been on the systems side of things for years, but I understand most technology and the question here is more how to gauge what to do so I can get the right resources in place. That said... here's what I am looking at. I figure the future is HTML5, and that's probably where I'd rather spend my efforts given that it will be cross platform and without the need for plugins. It will work on mobile as well. Question is, how well does HTML5 handle input media, say desktop capture and camera, or on mobile perhaps, where I'd want to use the user's phone camera, etc. Second question is dynamic streaming... I've read about MPEG DASH, then there are technologies like Smooth Streaming (which I think given the way Silverlight is going is going to be gone or useless), then also Apple and Flash, but if I'm doing HTML5 it doesn't benefit me. Any ideas here would be really helpful, and the more detail the better! :) That's about it... there are free chat services out there like using the MSN Web Chat controls (how good they are, I don't know, but worldwide most people have a Hotmail/MSN account) so I can use that for chat. I don't know its limitations of course, but that's something if people know or have suggestions, then I'm all ears. Thanks for the help, I greatly appreciate it!

    SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information SharePoint 2013 (foundation too), detects requests from mobile devices and automatically changes the uRL of the requested non mobile page to its mobile substitute. This logic is now built into SPRequestModule. The mobile view is pretty damned amazing. Even though the set of pages for mobile access is completely different, SharePoint has an entirely separate set of controls for the mobile pages. These are in the Microsoft.SharePoint.MobileControls namespace which inherit from Microsoft ASP.NET controls in the System.Web.UI.MobileControls namespace.     I am a web developer. I have been developing web sites professionally for 15+ years using ColdFusion, SQL Server, and jQuery. I am doing a project for a client that uses the above technologies. The site has a mobile facet too. For that, I am using jQuery Mobile. The site enables retail store personnel to gather a store customer's preferences using any smart phone or tablet. The store personnel just needs to access a special link via a QR code and a login. Anyone can easily access the site from a PC's browser, too. Some sources suggest that mobile apps must be downloaded and installed using a third party, such as from Google, Amazon, or Apple. Others sources suggest that any information designed for use on mobile device is a mobile app. Regarding the site that is specifically designed for use by mobile devices that extensively uses jQuery Mobile, is this a "web site" or a "mobile app"? What is the "proper" description for this type of site? My customer insists that it is one and not the other. I insist that it is the other and not the one. Can you help me clarify this?

  • html5 video secure streaming?

    Does html5 allow me to do secure streaming video? And by this, I mean token authentication. I want to be able to stream media only to those people who are authorised to view it. I can do this currently with Flash Media Server hosted by Akamai - they have a custom mechanism where I send them a token as part of the player connection handshake. Does html5 allow for this, and has anyone implemented this with a hosting service such as Akamai? Thanks Matt
