• Objective C - displaying data in NSTextView

  Hi, I'm having difficulties displaying data in a TextView in iPhone programming. I'm analyzing incoming audio data (from the microphone). In order to do that, I create an object "analyzer" from my SignalAnalyzer class which performs analysis of the incoming data. What I would like to do is to display each new incoming data in a TextView in realtime. So when I push a button, I create the object "analyzer" whiwh analyze the incoming data. Each time there is new data, I need to display it on the screen in a TextView. My problem is that I'm getting an error because (I think) I'm trying to send a message to the parent class (the one taking care of displaying stuff in my TextView : it has a TexView instance variable linked in Interface Builder). What should I do in order to tell my parent class what it needs to display ? Or how sohould I design my classes to display automaticlally something ? Thank you for your help.   Hi, I have a iPhone application with a few custom-defined colors for my theme. Since these colors will be fixed for my UI, I would like to define the colors in a class to be included (Constants.h and Constants.m). How do I do that? • Is Objective C fast enough for DSP/audio programming

  I've been making some progress with audio programming for iPhone. Now I'm doing some performance tuning, trying to see if I can squeeze more out of this little machine. Running Shark, I see that a significant part of my cpu power (16%) is getting eaten up by objc_msgSend. I understand I can speed this up somewhat by storing pointers to functions (IMP) rather than calling them using [object message] notation. But if I'm going to go through all this trouble, I wonder if I might just be better off using C++. Any thoughts on this?

  How can I check if a string (NSString) contains another smaller string? I was hoping for something like: NSString *string = @"hello bla bla"; NSLog(@"%d",[string containsSubstring:@"hello"]); But the closest I could find was: if ([string rangeOfString:@"hello"] == 0) { NSLog(@sub string doesnt exist") } else { NSLog(@"exists") } I typed that straight into stack so sorry if there are errors, but there would be if I was doing it in Xcode so you don't need to point any out. Anyway is that the best way to find if a string contains another string.

  When converting PDF Pages into UIImages I receive memory warnings all the time. It seems there is either some leak or something else that eats my memory. Using instruments didn't give me any helpful details.   I have two files independant on each other. Let's just call it Class1 and Class2. In Class1, I need Class2, and in Class2 I need Class1. I have a prefix file where I include all my files, and I get some syntax errors because I do #import "Class1.h" #import "Class2.h" How would I define both of them so they can use each other? What am I doing wrong?

  I have a string that I'm converting to a float that I want to check for values in an if statement. The original float value is the iPhone's trueHeading that is returned from the didUpdateHeading method. When I convert the original float to a string using @"%.2f" it works perfectly, but what I'm trying to do is convert the original float number to the same value. IF I just convert the string to [string floatValue] I get the same original float number, and I don't want that. To make it short and simple, how do I take an existing float value and just get the first 2 decimals?

  Attempting to make a NSObject called 'Person' that will hold the login details for my application (nothing to fancy). The app is made of a navigation controller with multiple table views but I am having issues sharing the Person object around. Clearly I am doing something very wrong here. Is there an easier way to share objects between different a number view controllers (both coded and xib)?

  Hi ! I'm currently using NSMutableArrays in my developments to store some data taken from an HTTP Servlet. Everything is fine since now I have to sort what is in my array. This is what I do : NSMutableArray *array = [[NSMutableArray arrayWithObjects:nil] retain]; [array addObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects: "Label 1", 1, nil]]; [array addObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects: "Label 2", 4, nil]]; [array addObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects: "Label 3", 2, nil]]; [array addObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects: "Label 4", 6, nil]]; [array addObject:[NSArray arrayWithObjects: "Label 5", 0, nil]]; First column contain a Label and 2nd one is a score I want the array to be sorted descending. Is the way I am storing my data a good one ? Is there a better way to do this than using NSMutableArrays in NSMutableArray ? I'm new to iPhone dev, I've seen some code about sorting but didn't feel good with that. Thanks in advance for your answers !

• Objective-C "miscasting" a string/int using stringWithFormat and %d

  Hi, I think this is a relatively simple question, but I don't precisely know what's happening. I have a method that tries to build a string using NSString's stringWithFormat It looks like this: NSString *line1 = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"the car is %d miles away", self.ma]; In the above line "self.ma" should be an int, but in my case, I made an error and "self.ma" actually points to a NSString. So, I understand that the line should read NSString *line1 = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"the car is %@ miles away", self.ma]; but my question is what is the %d in the first example doing to my NSString? If I use the debugger, I can see that in once case, "self.ma" equals "32444", but somehow the %d converts it to 1255296. I would've guessed that the conversion of 32444 = 1255296 is some type of base-numbering conversion (hex to dec or something), but that doesn't appear to be the case. Any idea as to what %d is doing to my string? TIA

  Hi ! I have a HTTP connector in my iPhone project and queries must have a parameter set from the username using the Fowler–Noll–Vo (FNV) Hash. I have a Java implementation working at this time, this is the code : long fnv_prime = 0x811C9DC5; long hash = 0; for(int i = 0; i < str.length(); i++) { hash *= fnv_prime; hash ^= str.charAt(i); } Now on the iPhone side, I did this : int64_t fnv_prime = 0x811C9DC5; int64_T hash = 0; for (int i=0; i < [myString length]; i++) { hash *= fnv_prime; hash ^= [myString characterAtIndex:i]; } This script doesn't give me the same result has the Java one. In first loop, I get this : hash = 0 hash = 100 (first letter is "d") hash = 1865261300 (for hash = 100 and fnv_prime = -2128831035 like in Java) Do someone see something I'm missing ?   I'll cut a really long story short and give an example of my problem. Given a class that has a pointer to a primitive type as a property: @interface ClassOne : NSObject { int* aNumber } @property int* aNumber; The class is instantiated, and aNumber is allocated and assigned a value, accordingly: ClassOne* bob = [[ClassOne alloc] init]; bob.aNumber = malloc(sizeof(int)); *bob.aNumber = 5; It is then passed, by reference, to assign the aNumber value of a seperate instance of this type of class, accordingly: ClassOne* fred = [[ClassOne alloc] init]; fred.aNumber = bob.aNumber; Fred's aNumber pointer is then freed, reallocated, and assigned a new value, for example 7. Now, the problem I'm having; Since Fred has been assigned the same pointer that Bob had, I would expect that Bob's aNumber will now have a value of 7. It doesn't, because for some reason it's pointer was freed, but not reassigned (it is still pointing to the same address it was first allocated which is now freed). Fred's pointer, however, has the allocated value 7 in a different memory location. Why is it behaving like this? What am I minsunderstanding? How can I make it work like C++ does?

  Im trying to get my label to print out "your score is ." All i can find online is how to print using printf: int score=2; printf("You scored %i", score); But this does not work when using the setText method. I have also tried labelAnswer.setText:("You scored %i", score); [labelAnswer setText:("You scored %i", score)]; But these do not work. I get an error: "request for member in something not a structure or union" Can anyone help?

[array release]; array = nil; } - (NSMutableArray*) getArray { //NO 1: NSMutableArray* array = [[NSMutableArray alloc]init]; //NO 2: NSMutableArray* array = [NSMutableArray array]; . . . return array; } NO 1: I create an array and return it. In the processArray method I release it. NO 2: I get an array by simply calling array. As I'm not owner of this, I don't need to release it in the processArray method. Which is the best alternative, NO 1 or NO 2? Or is there a better solution for this?
