  Many people like me want (or need) to do their business intelligence development work on a laptop. As someone who frequently speaks at various events or teaches classes on all subjects related to the Microsoft business intelligence stack, I need a way to run multiple server products on my laptop with reasonable performance. Once upon a time, that requirement meant only that I had to load the current version of SQL Server and the client tools of choice. In today's post, I'll review my latest experience with trying to make the newly released Microsoft BI products work with a Windows 7 operating system. The entrance of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 into the BI stack complicated matters and I started using Virtual Server to establish a "suitable" environment. As part of the team that delivered a lot of education as part of the Yukon pre-launch activities (that would be SQL Server 2005 for the uninitiated), I was working with four - yes, four - virtual servers. That was a pretty brutal workload for a 2GB laptop, which worked if I was very, very careful. It could also be a finicky and unreliable configuration as I learned to my dismay at one TechEd session several years ago when I had to reboot a very carefully cached set of servers just minutes before my session started. Although it worked, it came back to life very, very slowly much to the displeasure of the audience. They couldn't possibly have been less pleased than me. At that moment, I resolved to get the beefiest environment I could afford and consolidate to a single virtual server. Enter the 4GB 64-bit laptop to preserve my sanity and my livelihood. Likewise, for SQL Server 2008, I managed to keep everything within a single virtual server and I could function reasonably well with this approach. Now we have SQL Server 2008 R2 plus Office SharePoint Server 2010. That means a 64-bit operating system. Period. That means no more Virtual Server. That means I must use Hyper-V or another alternative. I've heard alternatives exist, but my few dabbles in this area did not yield positive results. It might have been just me having issues rather than any failure of those technologies to adequately support the requirements. My first run at working with the new BI stack configuration was to set up a 64-bit 4GB laptop with a dual-boot to run Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. However, I was generally not happy with running Windows Server 2008 R2 on my laptop. For one, I couldn't put it into sleep mode, which is helpful if I want to prepare for a presentation beforehand and then walk to the podium without the need to hold my laptop in its open state along the way (my strategy at the TechEd session long, long ago). Secondly, it was finicky with projectors. I had issues from time to time and while I always eventually got it to work, I didn't appreciate those nerve-wracking moments wondering whether this would be the time that it wouldn't work. Somewhere along the way, I learned that it was possible to load SharePoint 2010 in a Windows 7 which piqued my interest. I had just acquired a new laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, and thought surely running the BI stack natively on my laptop must be better than running Hyper-V. (I have not tried booting to Hyper-V VHD yet, but that's on my list of things to try so the jury of one is still out on this approach.) Recently, I had to build up a server with the RTM versions of SQL Server 2008 R2 and Sharepoint Server 2010 and decided to follow suit on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit laptop. The process is slightly different, but I'm happy to report that it IS possible, although I had some fits and starts along the way. DISCLAIMER: These products are NOT intended to be run in production mode on the Windows 7 operating system. The configuration described in this post is strictly for development or learning purposes and not supported by Microsoft. If you have trouble, you will NOT get help from them. I might be able to help, but I provide no guarantees of my ability or availablity to help. I won't provide the step-by-step instructions in this post as there are other resources that provide these details, but I will provide an overview of my approach, point you to the relevant resources, describe some of the problems I encountered, and explain how I addressed those problems to achieve my desired goal. Because my goal was not simply to set up SharePoint Server 2010 on my laptop, but specifically PowerPivot for SharePoint, I started out by referring to the installation instructions at the PowerPiovt-Info site, but mainly to confirm that I was performing steps in the proper sequence. I didn't perform the steps in Part 1 because those steps are applicable only to a server operating system which I am not running on my laptop. Then, the instructions in Part 2, won't work exactly as written for the same reason. Instead, I followed the instructions on MSDN, Setting Up the Development Environment for SharePoint 2010 on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008. In general, I found the following differences in installation steps from the steps at PowerPivot-Info: You must copy the SharePoint installation media to the local drive so that you can edit the config.xml to allow installation on a Windows client. You also have to manually install the prerequisites. The instructions provides links to each item that you must manually install and provides a command-line instruction to execute which enables required Windows features. I will digress for a moment to save you some grief in the sequence of steps to perform. I discovered later that a missing step in the MSDN instructions is to install the November CTP Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint. When I went to test my SharePoint site (I believe I tested after I had a successful PowerPivot installation), I ran into the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'RSSharePointSoapProxy, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I was rather surprised that Reporting Services was required. Then I found an article by Alan le Marquand, Working Together: SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Integration in SharePoint 2010,that instructed readers to install the November add-in. My first reaction was, "Really?!?" But I confirmed it in another TechNet article on hardware and software requirements for SharePoint Server 2010. It doesn't refer explicitly to the November CTP but following the link took me there. (Interestingly, I retested today and there's no longer any reference to the November CTP. Here's the link to download the latest and greatest Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Technologies 2010.) You don't need to download the add-in anymore if you're doing a regular server-based installation of SharePoint because it installs as part of the prerequisites automatically. When it was time to start the installation of SharePoint, I deviated from the MSDN instructions and from the PowerPivot-Info instructions: On the Choose the installation you want page of the installation wizard, I chose Server Farm. On the Server Type page, I chose Complete. At the end of the installation, I did not run the configuration wizard. Returning to the PowerPivot-Info instructions, I tried to follow the instructions in Part 3 which describe installing SQL Server 2008 R2 with the PowerPivot option. These instructions tell you to choose the New Server option on the Setup Role page where you add PowerPivot for SharePoint. However, I ran into problems with this approach and got installation errors at the end. It wasn't until much later as I was investigating an error that I encountered Dave Wickert's post that installing PowerPivot for SharePoint on Windows 7 is unsupported. Uh oh. But he did want to hear about it if anyone succeeded, so I decided to take the plunge. Perseverance paid off, and I can happily inform Dave that it does work so far. I haven't tested absolutely everything with PowerPivot for SharePoint but have successfully deployed a workbook and viewed the PowerPivot Management Dashboard. I have not yet tested the data refresh feature, but I have installed. Continue reading to see how I accomplished my objective. I unintalled SQL Server 2008 R2 and started again. I had different problems which I don't recollect now. However, I uninstalled again and approached installation from a different angle and my next attempt succeeded. The downside of this approach is that you must do all of the things yourself that are done automatically when you install PowerPivot as a new server. Here are the steps that I followed: Install SQL Server 2008 R2 to get a database engine instance installed. Run the SharePoint configuration wizard to set up the SharePoint databases. In Central Administration, create a Web application using classic mode authentication as per a TechNet article on PowerPivot Authentication and Authorization. Then I followed the steps I found at How to: Install PowerPivot for SharePoint on an Existing SharePoint Server. Especially important to note - you must launch setup by using Run as administrator. I did not have to manually deploy the PowerPivot solution as the instructions specify, but it's good to know about this step because it tells you where to look in Central Administration to confirm a successful deployment. I did spot some incorrect steps in the instructions (at the time of this writing) in How To: Configure Stored Credentials for PowerPivot Data Refresh. Specifically, in the section entitled Step 1: Create a target application and set the credentials, both steps 10 and 12 are incorrect. They tell you to provide an actual Windows user name and password on the page where you are simply defining the prompts for your application in the Secure Store Service. To add the Windows user name and password that you want to associate with the application - after you have successfully created the target application - you select the target application and then click Set credentials in the ribbon. Lastly, I followed the instructions at How to: Install Office Data Connectivity Components on a PowerPivot server. However, I have yet to test this in my current environment. I did have several stops and starts throughout this process and edited those out to spare you from reading non-essential information. I believe the explanation I have provided here accurately reflect the steps I followed to produce a working configuration. If you follow these steps and get a different result, please let me know so that together we can work through the issue and correct these instructions. I'm sure there are many other folks in the Microsoft BI community that will appreciate the ability to set up the BI stack in a Windows 7 environment for development or learning purposes. • Approach For Syncing One SharePoint List With One or More SharePoint Lists

  What would be the best approach or strategy for configuring, customizing or developing in SharePoint a solution that allows me to keep one or more SharePoint lists in sync with a SharePoint list I have designated as a master or parent list. I would like to be able to create a master/parent list of some information that can be extended or used by different parts of the organization without them being able to CRUD any items on the actual columns of the master list. (I have seen some commercial web parts that offer column security on SharePoint lists and although that’s one way of potentially meeting my needs I would like to explore other options.) Scenario: I have a list called FOO: FOO Title Description I would like to create a new list BAR based off of FOO (BAR is managed by sub-organization that doesn't have access to FOO List): BAR FOO.Title (Read-Only) FOO.Description (Read-Only) NewColumn1 NewColumn2 Actions: Create- If a new item is entered in FOO I would like the new item added to BAR. Read - N/A Update - If the title or description is changed in FOO I would like it changed in BAR. Delete- No Deletes in the scenario. (Deletes are handled by the business with status column.) Templates with content extraction offer me this but it’s a one time shot at list creation. Just not sure what the best approach or strategy would be for this in MOSS 2007. Thanks!

• When is Visual Studio 2010 expected to RTM?

  Microsoft originally slated the final release build for April 12, 2010. Somasegar said the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 releases will now be pushed back "a few weeks." I know the version / product name says "2010", but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will RTM in 2010. After all VS'2008 RTM'd in November 2007. The last Beta of VS'2008 came out in July 2007, and it RTM'd in November. So based on the previous version that places VS'2010 to RTM in September 2010 at the very earliest since the first Beta just came out in May. Anyone have any other speculations?

• Visual Studio 2010 RC + ASP.NET MVC 2

  Now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out, I tried to install it on my development machine, which already has Visual Studio 2010 RC installed and I got this error message during installation Component Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 has failed to install with the following error message: "A different version of ASP.NET MVC 2 is already installed on your system. Please uninstall this version before proceeding with this install." Sure enough, the MVC 2 release notes state: Note Because Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 RC share a component of ASP.NET MVC 2, installing the ASP.NET MVC 2 RTM release on a computer where Visual Studio 2010 RC is also installed is not supported. So my question is, though officially unsupported, if I uninstall VS 2010 RC, install MVC 2 then re-install VS 2010 RC, might this work? And would I then be able to target MVC 2 in VS2010?

• Outlook 2010 Reminders - Can't dismiss or snooze.

  I seem to have encountered a zombie reminder that doesn't want to die. A few weeks ago I had an issue where I had a reminder from weeks gone by pop up in my Reminder window in Outlook 2010. Due in: 2 weeks overdue. Weird, I thought. So I did the usual 'Dismiss'. 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Weird, I thought. So I tried snoozing it. Not 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Ok, this is getting weird. Let's try 'Dismiss All'. "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Fine, fine, you win Outlook. Let's open the item and delete it. "1 Reminder, Due in **3** weeks overdue". Ah, now the previous reminder in the series is popping up. Let's delete that one too. "1 Reminder, Due in **4** weeks overdue". FUUUUU-- I ended up having to delete all past occurances of a weekly reminder before the reminder removed itself. It's now a few weeks later, and what do I see? "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Does anyone know if this is a known bug in Outlook 2010 Beta, where recurring events with reminders start zombifying themselves, and won't stop reminding me they exist til I decapitate (delete) them entirely?

• Exchange 2010: Replication Service Still Trying to Replicate Deleted Mailbox Store

  In advance, thank you for your opinions! I just migrated from Server/Exchange 2003 to Server 2008 SR2 running Exchange 2010. I had an extra mailbox that appeared with some system mailboxes in it. I used the EMS to move those mailboxes over and then deleted the store out of the EMC. Since then every so often I get an Error in Event Viewer. Source: MSExchangeRepl ID: 4098 Error: The Microsoft Exchange Replication service couldn't find a valid configuration for database '5f012f40-3bad-4003-a373-dbc0ffb6736f' on server 'EXCHSERVER'. Error: (nothing after this) I can confirm that the above GUID is the mailbox store of that I deleted. No other Exchange errors occur. How can I tell Exchange Replication to ignore this store? Setup, one Exchange server 2003 transitioned over to 2010. No other Exchange servers. Is there a way to fix this? Do I need to change a setting to stop replication? I plan to add a second Exchange server in the next few days so stopping replication would be a bad thing. Thanks again in advance. Jason

ISSUE: i have a user account in the active directory, and the user is member of the domain, the user is [email protected] and when trying to login with this account in outlook 2010 on other machine using following data: account type: POP3 incoming mail server: mail.centors.com outgoing mail server: mail.centors.com i always get the error: Authorization failed, check your server settings. please advise what's wrong with the configuration, thanks in advance.

• Referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 SMO from Visual Studio 2010

  Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

• Can't import contacts into Outlook from Excel

  I run MS Office 2010. I have all contacts from a previous Outlook 2010 saved in an Excel sheet. I have tried dozens of time to import, but when Outlooks is supposed to do the mapping of the columns I only have one column in my CSV-file: firstname;middlename;surname, etc. It means I cannot map the data correctly. I have tried saving in MS-DOS and Tab and it does not get better. I have tried saving on another computer and it does help either. ALso tried importing to Gmail with same result. Can anyone help?

• How can I add subdomains of default accepted domain of Exchange 2010

  I have an Exchange 2010 that has several accepted domains. Now I want this server to accept - besides the default SMTP domain - all subdomains of the default domain. The documentation in Technet states When you create an accepted domain, you can use a wildcard character (*) in the address space to indicate that all subdomains of the SMTP address space are also accepted by the Exchange organization. For example, to configure Contoso.com and all its subdomains as accepted domains, enter *.Contoso.com as the SMTP address space. It is, however not possible to add e. g. *.contoso.com if contoso.com is already configured. Exchange complains in this case that the domain is already configured. It is also not possible to edit the "value", i. e. the domain name of an accepted domain. I know that I cannot modify the default accepted domain, but changing it to another does not help either, because the domain name itself can never be edited. The last idea was deleting the accepted domain and re-creating it with "*." prepended. This is, however, also impossible because it is of course not possible to delete or modify the default address policy and if a domain name is used in an address template it cannot be removed from the accepted domains. The question is: How can I make my Exchange 2010 server accept any subdomain of its default accepted domain with a wildcard?

• Cluster Core Resource state of Exchange 2010 DAG

  I have two Exchange 2010 servers in a DAG and a witness server to implement mailbox resiliency. The two Exchange servers are in two subnets and the Windows failover cluster therefore has two IP address resources. I now that Exchange uses "core functionality" of Windows Server failover clustering, but it does not use all features. My setup also seems to work, but if I run the validation in the Windows Failover Cluster Manager, it complains about one of the IP address resources being offline. However, I cannot bring this resource online, because the server complains that "the specified cluster node is not the owner of the resource, or the node is not a possible owner of the resource". If I "Simulate failure of this resource", it becomes offline and the other IP becomes online. I have the vague idea that Exchange might use the state of the IP resource to identify the Primary Active Manager, but I am not sure. As it is obviously important that failover really works, I would like to be sure. Therefore, my question is: Is it normal that only one IP address resource in a Exchange 2010 DAG failover cluster is active at a time? If not, how do I bring both resources online at the same time given the error described above?

• Visual Studio 2010 won't compile/create new projects

  My Visual Studio 2010 Professional with SP1 installed won't compile anymore. The shown error is: TRACKER : error TRK0005: Failed to locate: "CL.exe". The system cannot find the file specified. Strangely it is also not possible anymore to create new projects - the wizard appears but just restarts when I press create. As I found out the paths for Visual Studio are now built from settings in the registry. Namely HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio. Comparing a colleagues installation with mine revealed no different settings. So this is how the Property Pages/Configuration Properties/VC++ Directories look like: Executable Directories: $(ExecutablePath) Include Directories: $(IncludePath) Reference Directories: $(ReferencePath) Library Directories: $(LibraryPath) Source Directories: $(SourcePath) Exclude Directories: $(ExcludePath) From the Visual Studio 2010 Command Prompt, cl.exe is found. I can only guess that this behavior was caused by a reinstallation of Studio a couple of months ago (to a different folder). As we use an external build-script for our main project there is a good chance that it is broken since then. Any hints?

• Prevent Outlook 2010 Insert Picture resizing image

  When I "Insert Picture" a JPEG in Outlook 2010 it automatically resizes the image and, I think, recompresses it too. I realise this would be useful for photographs or for people who try to email 1MB BMPs but I would like to email around an image at the original pixel size without recompression. Is there a way to turn this off, or better still choose settings for each image insert? I found this page in the Office help. It's for Word, PowerPoint and Excel not Outlook but points you at File, Options, Advanced, Image Settings. There's no equivalent section in Outlook. I know Outlook uses Word as its editor so I've looked at Word's settings but there isn't an 'original size' here: there's only 'turn off image recompression' and pick target DPI from 96, 150, 220. I guess Office is finding a DPI value in the JPEG file and scaling it up or down to match this setting. I can't find an equivalent option in Outlook's options menu but there's so many settings and pop-up dialogs I may have missed something. Picture Format, Reset image size resets the image to the rescaled version, not the original. I can't see a way to edit a pixel value into size values in the image properties after insert. Thanks! I realise I can probably achieve this by editing the image metadata in PhotoShop elements or similar but there ought to be a way without editing the file? This is new behaviour in Outlook 2010; 2007 didn't do this.

• Where do Outlook folders go when moved?

  I have an account with external user mailboxes opened and accidentally I have moved a folder and now I can't find it anywhere. Action: I clicked on a folder and dragged it into another one. Result: Can't find the moved folder anywhere The above picture is the folders I currently have from my Outlook 2010 (via Exchange 2010), under an AD Network. Where can I (me, having admin rights over the network) retrieve that missing folder again? Attempts: The original and the one folder I need was accidentally moved, but I have created a poi folder and tried the same way, and I got the same result... the folder went missing. I also tried to reboot the client machine and access the same mailbox from OWA ... no luck on both attempts :( Any ideas on how I can retrieve the missing folder and its emails again?

• Exchange 2010 OWA- Open Other User Mailbox

  I just started working for this small firm (30 people) a little bit ago, replacing their System Admin. First thing I noticed was Exchange Server 2010 was WAY out of date. Believe it or not they did not have SP1 installed. So after I installed and configured Exchange 2010 SP3 and redirected OWA I noticed something in OWA. I could add ANYONE's User Mailbox WITHOUT giving mailbox premission. I created a couple test users, same thing. I even had another employee provide me access to their OWA and they could open anyone's Inbox without granting permission. I don't want to play the blame game, but I was SHOCKED that this was going on. Luckly being such a small company I'll be able to cover this mistake that I did not create, BUT HOW? My guess is that I need to find out where the past System Admin went wrong in providing Full Access Permission? Or could this be a Auto-Mapping issue? • Weird problem with Visual C++ 2010 Express

  This has happened before on my Vista Premium installation, and now it's happening on my Windows 7 Home Premium installation. Basically everytime I install Visual Studio Express 2010, it works fine for a random amount of time but then suddenly starts to hide from my sight -- that's the best way I can explain it. VS does not crash, and from what I can tell it does not freeze either; It continues to work, I can even "minimize" and "maximize" it; I simply cannot see it nor can I interact with it any meaningful way. Also: After the "crash" there are no logs in: Root\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express - ENU. Nor any other files created at the time of the crash. There are no traces in the event viewer. The program seems to be functioning perfectly in the process manager. If I reinstall Visual C++, it works normally for a seemingly random period of time before going cookoo again. I am stumped. This has never happened to me before, with any other program. And yet I doubt it really is a problem with Visual C++; More like something general that seems to have picked on it for some reason. Still, after a clean install with a new OS, I'm kinda thinking there's something wrong here. Any help would be appreciated, altough I suspect that the answer to this question will make me feel embarassed. P.S. Not sure if it helps, but I think around the same time I started having problems (On both installations) with windows turning off the display when I leave the computer, and then seemingly crashing when it turns it on again -- in fact when I interact with it it seems to be responding to my commands without actually display anything.

• One user sometimes gets an unknown certificate error opening Outlook

  Let me clarify a little. This isn't an unknown certificate error it's an unknown certificate error in so much as I can't figure out where the certificate comes from. This happens on a Win 7 Enterprise machine connecting to Exchange 2010 with Outlook 2010. The error he gets is that the root is not trusted because it's a self-signed cert. Take a look at this screenshot because even if I had generated this myself I wouldn't have put "SomeOrganizationalUnit" or "SomeCity" or "SomeState", etc. (Red block covers our domain name.) I'm a little concerned this is a symptom of a security breach. Exchange 2010 has three certificates installed but none of them are this certificate. They all have different expiration dates (one is expired) and different meta-data. edit: There are two scenarios that I see the certificate warning and one of them I can reliably repeat. When the user leaves his computer on over night Outlook pops the Security Warning window. I don't know what time this happens. Using Outlook Anywhere if I connect to Exchange externally via a cellular USB modem the Security Warning window will appear every time I close and reopen Outlook. Whether I say Yes or No does not make a difference on whether or not I can connect to Exchange and send/receive email. In other words, I can always connect to Exchange. I've checked my two Exchange servers and my Cisco router for a certificate that matches this one and I can't find it. edit 2: Here is a screenshot of the Security Alert window. (I've been calling it Security Warning... My mistake.) edit 3: I stopped seeing this error several weeks ago but I can't tie it to any single event (because I just sort of realized that warning had stopped showing up) but I think I found the source of the certificate. Last week I found out that the certificate on our website DomainA.com was invalid. I knew that our web admin had installed a valid certificate so when I look into the problem I found out I was being presented with the invalid certificate that this posting is in regards to. The Exchange server's domain is mail.DomainA.com so I can only guess that Outlook was passing this invalid certificate through as it did some kind of check on DomainA.com. This issue is still a mystery because the certificate warning stopped appearing several weeks ago whereas the invalid certificate issue on the website was only fixed last week. It ended up being a problem with the website control panel. The valid certificate was installed but not being served for some reason and instead the self-signed cert was being served.

  I have an Exchange 2010 UR3 deployment that I need to customize the OWA logon page for. I've created a new LGNTOPL.GIF file to replace the existing one in the folder: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.158.1\themes\resources” When I bring up OWA, I still get the original “Outlook Web App” logo. I’ve searched and found a couple of other instances of LGNTOPL.GIF in the directories: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.123.3\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.146.0\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\Current\themes\resources” I’ve replaced the LGNTOPL.GIF file in each of the above directories but got the same results. I’ve tried clearing my browser cache and even using multiple browsers from multiple PC’s but the same results. I’ve even tried making my GIF file the same pixel size as the original LGNTOPL.GIF logo but still the same results. I’ve tried restarting IIS on the CAS server and restarting the server but same results. Has something changed with Exchange 2010 UR3 when trying to customize OWA? I don't see anything documented about any change to OWA customization. Thanks

• Outlook 2010 search not working after upgrade to windows 8

  After upgrading my computer to Windows 8 Outlook 2010 has stopped displaying search results. Normally you can enter a (part) of a word in the search box on top of the inbox list and it will show you result immediatly. Even mails allready visible on the screen are not found. Somebody familiar with this issue? Update: maybe relevant: I use an Google Apps Pro account. All mail is synced and locally available in Outlook 2010. I did not change this in any way while upgrading, it was working perfectly before. I can scroll through all the e-mails, new mails are coming in as expected. This morning I received two mails from a person by the name of Rosanne. When searching on her name in Outlook it gives me One (1) result, the last mail from today. Update 2: Rebuilding the index seemed to be working. But after another day it stopped working again. No results whatsoever in Outlook search. Rebuilding indexes every day is not an option as it takes several hours. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I use Google Apps Pro. It acts like a Exchange server to outlook. In indexing options (configuration) I added the directories containg the PST from this service (mail is also synced locally)

• Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

  I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

• How to edit default.aspx on SharePoint site without SharePoint Designer

  On several occations, I have faced the situation that the default.aspx page on a Site doesn't work. More specifically, a reference to a WebPart and/or Control is throwing a error because the assembly is not found. Fine, you just fire up the dreaded SharePoint Designer and remove the dependency line. However, if I wanted to use this method when not having SharePoint Designer, how could this be done? EDIT: Removing the web part using the "?contents=1" web part management page didn't help in my case. The <%@Register tag was still there and had to be removed using SharePoint Designer.
