    I previously never bothered with it. but I just did a fresh install of 12.04 and figured "hey maybe i'll put in my google account and see what happens" I logged in with google and everyting like mal/calendar/contacts/chat is set to "on"... I figured it might automatically set up my gmail for various applications like empathy and thunderbird.. but I opened them up and found nothing... What exactly is the purpose of adding your account to "online accounts"? where is it used?

  • What kind of support does Canonical provide on a business level?

    I was wondering about the support for Ubuntu in general? If a (small/large)business is running Ubuntu, what type of issues does Canonical help out with? examples: if a business is running a windows app, via wine does canonical help out with that when a business is running software that is not installed via the software but via PPA(stable/beta) and or downloaded manually. Some examples apps libreoffice/handbrake/openshot etc... etc... does Canonical give support when those app have issues? when a business is trying to migrate from lotes notes/outlook to thunderbird? sorry if this is a bit vague, but i don't really know much about support... be as detailed possible!     I am new to linux and was wondering why launching applications is so slow. I've tried both Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit Computer Specs: Toshiba Satellite p755 CPU: Intel core i7-2670QM @2.20GHz Ram: 8 GB Using integrated intel hd 3000 graphics When I install the first thing I do is update, which takes about an hour or so. I would assume I'd be good after that, but when launching things like the firefox, system settings, thunderbird it takes a much much longer time than on Windows 7. Please help me.

  • mouse pad freezes

    I have an acer aspire running net book remix 11.10. the mouse pad freezes up completely and I must use an external mouse. if I reboot the computer the mouse pad will work again. i seem to have this problem happen in the middle of either using firefox or a few time while using thunderbird. anyone else having this problem. an external mouse works but scrolling is choppy or it scrolls part of the way down a page and then jumps to the top again. I don't recall having this problem after upgrading to 11.10 so I think it is related to an update. my Linux skills are limited.

    Is there a way to set Emacs-like keyboard shortcuts (at least the subset mentioned below) for the whole OS? This is possible in some apps such as the terminal, Emacs (go figure :) and additionally through special plugins in some other apps (Eclipse), but I got so used to C-f-ing through text and never having to jump to arrows that I'd like to be able to do this system-wide so that I can do it whenever I'm typing - e.g. searching for songs in Rhythmbox, typing stuff into the dash or the HUD, writing mails in Thunderbird or Gmail... The combos I'm most interested in are: C-f - forward C-b - backwards C-a - home C-e - end C-d - delete C-k - delete line (note for non-emacs users - C means Ctrl)

    Once power on the system, after some time the GUI of all most all window has changed (look at the image). Into thunderbird all text are overlapped and display mashed up. Into Geany color all tabs and code are changed. I need to close those apps and reopen it to view it correctly. I have 1 GB of RAM. I am new to ubuntu. can any body help me what it the problem? and how to solve it? I have read the question Weird Ubuntu 11.10 GUI problem , but it does not solve my problem. Thanks

    I uses a lots of Google Apps Product in my Laptop, Tablet and Mobile. Since I never use all pre-installed software in Ubuntu, can I remove it? E.g like: LibreOffice | I use Google Doc etc. RhythmBox | I use Google Play Music Thunderbird | I use Gmail, don't like client Videos | Watch online Messaging | Hangouts And other softwares like Remmina Client, BitTorrent Client. Can I simply remove it in Ubuntu Software Centre? I like my Laptop clean and having unmessy software that I never use. I normally use Chromium Browser to do all the stuff, I think I am heavy user of Google, and love the simplicity of Ubuntu. Lol! Can anyone tell or guide me? Thanks!

    I have single partition of 92GB in which I installed Ubuntu 12.04. And for some Unknown reason a message pop ups saying that I only have 1GB of HDD space left.   • Add a custom certificate authority to Ubuntu

    Hello; I have created a custom root certificate authority for an internal network, example.com. Ideally, I would like to be able to deploy the CA certificate associated with this certificate authority to my Linux clients (running Ubuntu 9.04 and CentOS 5.3), such that all of the applications automatically recognize the certificate authority (i.e. I do not want to have to configure Firefox, Thunderbird, etc manually to trust this certificate authority). I have attempted this on Ubuntu by copying the PEM-encoded CA certificate to /etc/ssl/certs/ and /usr/share/ca-certificates/, as well as by modifying /etc/ca-certificates.conf and rerunning update-ca-certificates, however applications do not seem to recognize that I have added another trusted CA to the system. Therefore, is it possible to add a CA certificate once to a system, or is it necessary to manually add the CA to all of the possible applications that will attempt to make SSL connections to hosts signed by this CA in my network? If it is possible to add a CA certificate once to the system, where does it need to go? Thanks.

  • SMTP Server Times Out for 1 of 2 ISPs

    For months I've been using a 5g sprint card for my laptop to check email. I have gmail, and three other accounts all configured in Thunderbird. Recently, I got AT&T internet service at my house and I discovered that I cannot send email when connected to my home service. I can receive just fine, but I can't send. If I plugin my 5g card, I can sent/receive with no problems. At home I'm connected wirelessly through a router. What could be causing this interruption? I even tried pinging my smtp server only to see it timeout when connected via AT&T. If more details are needed, I'll be happy to share.

  • Automatically save/download e-mail body to disk

    Is there a program that will allow me to connect to my mail server (IMAP) and automatically save certain new e-mails to disk? Multiple times a day I receive automated e-mail updates about pending jobs from a system that processes some information for us. The data in these e-mails is written as plain-text within the body of the message. I would like to download the newest message, parse it, and display it on my desktop. The last two parts I can manage ok - it's just the automatic downloading that is posing a challenge. I don't use Outlook (I do use Thunderbird), but would prefer not to have the client open to make this happen. I'm currently running Win7.

  • What Is the Keyboard Shortcut for Moving to Last Message in Mac OS X Mail.app?

    I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). In Mail, I have the first message in my Inbox selected and I'm trying to navigate to the last message using my keyboard. In Thunderbird, I just hit the End key, which for me is "Function-right arrow" because I'm on a MacBook Pro. In Mail, with the first message selected, if I hit "Function-right arrow" (i.e. End), the scroll bar moves down, allowing me to see the messages at the bottom of the list, but the first message at the top of the list is still selected. What I want is for the last message to be selected. I've tried lots of key combinations and searched for the answer but haven't been able to find it. Please help. I posted this originally at discussions.apple.com but the only advice I received was to file a bug with Apple, which I did.

  • How to improve the HTML formatting in Evolution mail client

    I have a question about viewing HTML emails in the Evolution mail client. Basically, I am receiving some emails that look lovely in Thunderbird but not in Evolution because the HTML rendering of Evolution isn't as advanced. Does anyone know how to improve the HTML rendering of Evolution? e.g. a plugin, tip, code patch, etc... The closest I've got is to right-click the email, "Save As...", save as a html file, then open in Firefox. Not exactly streamline! What emails can't it display well? We use the subversion revision control system which is set up to send an email whenever someone commits via svnnotify all nicely coloured via the --handler HTML::ColorDiff -d parameter. When Evolution fails to use the colours, I find it very had to read the raw diff.

  • Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

    If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right?   • Raleigh theme on LightDM, Ubuntu desktop, Nautilus window, menus & menu-bars

    After performing an upgrade from Natty to Oneiric, I had a problem similar to the one reported in here at every system boot: Desktop forgets theme? Everything, from the LigthDM greeter to the ubuntu desktop used the ugly raleigh theme, apart from firefox, thunderbird few other applications after logging in. Unfortunately none of the solutions suggested in the topic above worked for me. The only way I could get acceptable appearance would be to switch to gnome at login and using the Adwaita theme. The lightdm greeter still uses the raleigh theme though. Unfortunately, I tried some "brute-force" methods by reinstalling (sudo apt-get install --reinstall) ubuntu-desktop, unity, unity-common, unity-greeter, gnome-session, gtk2-engines. I also tried moving .config, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome2 to a backup dir to reset account desktop preferences. None of the above solved the issue. On the contrary, logging-in to Ubuntu setup does not show unity and window decorations anymore. My fallback remains the Gnome logon and the Adwaita theme. This is my workstation machine I am hosting Ubuntu on, so, though possible, it is time consuming to perform a backup and format-reinstall ubuntu 11.10. Could you please let me know if I can get an alternative way of repairing my ubuntu desktop? (I believe it all started when, during the 11.04-to-11.10 upgrade, the installation of downloaded packages for oneiric broke when nautilus-dropbox failed to access the dropbox servers - I am behind a proxy but with proper proxy settings had no problems using apt-get & synaptic. However I removed dropbox and resumed partial installation on second boot.)

    I have 24" dual monitors with 1920x1080 resolution on both of them. Consequently the text appears so small. I use the following text-intensive applications frequently: Web browser (Google Chrome) IDE (Komodo) Terminal (Gnome Terminal) Email (Thunderbird) I can configure text size on IDE, Terminal and Email. But for Chrome, it is not a good idea to set proportional font size because often one wants to see the entire (not just proportional fonts) site to be zoomed. So I am asking: Is it possible to increase DPI in Ubuntu (much like on Windows) so as to increase the text size across all apps? OR Is it possible to set permanent 'zoom' in Google Chrome, using a third-party extension maybe?
