  • Monitor not detected - low resolution only

    I just installed Ubuntu 11.1 on my desktop pc. It was a clean install, no upgrading. I have a Samsung Syncmaster BX2450 connected to the PC. My problem is that I cannot make Ubuntu recognize my monitor - which is capable of more than 1024. I ran a shut down of lightdm, and ran sudo X -configure, but it gave me a "configuration failed". Nothing seems to work - any ideas?   • How to properly remove URL's from Google's index?

    On some of our sites, we now have several thousand pages that dilute our website's keyword density. The website is an MVC site with SEO routing. If I submit a new sitemap with say only the 2000 or so pages that we want indexed, even though navigating to the diluting pages still works, will Google re-index the site with only those 2000 pages, dropping the superfluous ones? For example, I want to keep roughly 2000 of the following: www.mysite.com/some-search-term-1/some-good-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-2/some-more-good-keywords And remove several thousand of the following that have already been indexed. www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-more-keywords These pages are not actually "removed" as navigating to these URL's still renders a page. Even though there are potentially hundreds of thousands of pages, I only want say 2000 to be re-indexed and retained. The others removed (without having to do these manually). Thanks.

  • Page Load Time - "Waiting on..." taking ages. What part of page request process is hung?

    I have a new cluster site running on Magento that's on a development server that is made up of 2 x web servers and 1 x database server. I have optimized the site in all areas I know (gzip, increasing php memory limits, increasing database memory limits etc) but sometimes the page loading gets stuck on 'waiting for xxx.xx.xx.xxx' (Chrome and other broswers, chrome just shows it that way). It can sit there for 40 + seconds, sometimes it just never loads and I close it in frustration. What part of the page loading process is this hung at? Is it a server issue, database issue, platform issue? I need to know where to start or whether to push the hosting provider about it.

  • Ubuntu (and any other linux os) not booting from cd or usb

    I will tell you the whole story,one night when i was using KDE on Ubuntu 10.10 Kwin crashed then i shut down the os next day when i booted it the display came completely garbled and i went to safe graphics mode ,it worked and in reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and then restarted .Then immediatly, It said No init found Busybox XX.XX then I thought ill do a fresh install I inserted the ubuntu cd provided to me by Canonical.When i pressed 'try ubuntu without installing' instead of the graphic boot screen i saw.Ubuntu 10.10 in regular text and a progress bar few seconds after that the screen was flooded with error messages first alot of white then red.I then went to my win7 installation and saw a website which told me to find a Ext3 reader and format the ubuntu partition and the swap.I did that and when i restarted. GRUB configuration not found grub> Then it took my win 7 ERD and restored 7's bootloder Xp and 7 were working i put in the livecd again,Same error,Now usin my seven,Please help geeks,Ive even tried Knoppix,Fedora,Debiane.t.c they wont boot and i want to retain my win 7 and winxp partitions,I really miss linux.

    Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'll give it a go. I simply require a little advice; A very large hosted e-commerce platform emailed me a while back and basically asked me to transfer my domain name to them. They made no offer but simply said 'why not change your domain to xx - xx instaead of xxxx' Not they own all the equivalent names in .com, .org all of them apart from my .co.uk I am a registered partner of theirs and my website is a portfolio of all my themes but I also get a lot of enquires through it. I had heard rumors this company is opening an office in the UK! I'm right in thinking I shouldn't just roll over right? I've put some much effort in to SEO and building my reputation... I can't just give it up surly?

  • How do I remove Skype 4.3 from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit)

    I installed Skype on my nephew's new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS machine, and now we've decided to remove it. But I'm not able to locate it in my Installed programs section of Ubuntu Software Center. I'm able to call it up by opening the debian package, Software Center opens it up, but where I would normally see the "Remove" button, I have a "Reinstall" button. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to uninstall Skype. Any suggestions? In case you're wondering I used the version of Skype designed for 12.xx, as there was no option available for Ubuntu 14.xx.

    I'm having a difficult time understanding the paradigm of Matlab classes vs compared to c++. I wrote code the other day, and I thought it should work. It did not... until I added <handle after the classdef. So I have two classes, landmarks and robot, both are called from within the simulation class. This is the main loop of obj.simulation.animate() and it works, until I try to plot two things at once. DATA.path is a record of all the places a robot has been on the map, and it's updated every time the position is updated. I created a figure l.lm that has about 100 xy points. When I try to plot a second group of XY points, stored in DATA.path, it craps out and I can't figure out why.

  • Cisco SG200 vlan issue in ESXi VSA cluster

    I have three Cisco SG200-26 switches, and I also have two ESXi hosts that I have connected like shown in the below "best practice" map by VMware: http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/17393-102-1-22458/VSA_networking_map.pdf Even though I created the VLANs in the SG200 and I set the two VLANs (508 and 608) as allowed for these untagged ports (where my ESX NIC's are connected), I can not ping from host 1 to host 2 when configuring the NIC's to use 608 VLAN. Am I missing something? my IP's are all in the 192.168. range, and the only reason I need the VLANs is to isolate the traffic of VSA back-end internally, only the two hosts will be using the VLANs. So I think I do not have to create virtual interfaces on my router since that's the case, is my understanding correct? Also sending my switch config screenshot below.. all 3 switches have the latest firmware (it seems these were originally linksys and got rebranded as cisco after the acquisition) http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/2503/switch.gif Any ideas what to change on the Cisco SG200 to make this work , would be appreciated! The second VLAN (608) only needs two IP's: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 The first VLAN (508) will have about 15 IP's for ESXi Management and VSA cluster service, I could use either 192.168.1.xx or 10.0.1.xx The rest of my network (about 50 clients) is in 192.168.1.xx range VMware also states that the VLAN protocol on the physical switch must be 802.1Q, not ISL, anyone knows which of the two my SG200-26 uses? In addition to that, the only requirement from VSA is that my two hosts: -Are in the same subnet. -Have static IP addresses set. -Have the same Default Gateway configured. If I need inter-vlan routing for this, I suppose I have to create virtual interfaces on my sonicwall, and assign an IP for each VLAN, and then set routes between them? Thank you for your time!

  • java max heap size, how much is too much

    I'm having issues with a JRuby (rails) app running in tomcat. Occasionally page requests can take up to a minute to return (even though the rails logs processed the request in seconds so it's obviously a tomcat issue). I'm wondering what settings are optimal for the java heap size. I know there's no definitive answer, but I thought maybe someone could comment on my setup. I'm on a small EC2 instance which has 1.7g ram. I have the following JAVA_OPTS: -Xmx1536m -Xms256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled My first thought is that Xmx is too high. If I only have 1.7gb and I allocated 1.5gb to java, i feel like I'll get a lot of paging. Typically my java process shows (in top) 1.1g res memory and 2g virtual. I also read somewhere that setting the Xms and Xmx to the same size will help as it eliminates time spend on memory allocation. I'm not a java person but I've been tasked with figuring out this problem and I'm trying to find out where to start. Any tips are greatly appreciated!! update I've started analyzing the garbage collection dumps using -XX:+PrintGCDetails When i notice these occasional long load times, the gc logs go nuts. the last one I did (which took 25s to complete) I had gc log lines such as: 1720.267: [GC 1720.267: [DefNew: 27712K->16K(31104K), 0.0068020 secs] 281792K->254096K(444112K), 0.0069440 secs] 1720.294: [GC 1720.294: [DefNew: 27728K->0K(31104K), 0.0343340 secs] 281808K->254080K(444112K), 0.0344910 secs] about 300 of them on a single request!!! Now, I don't totally understand why it's always GC'ng from ~28m down to 0 over and over.

Is it possible to tell postfix to merge this into one single Authentication-Results:-Line? When I send an e-mail to google, it says: [...] Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as permitted sender) [email protected]; dkim=pass [email protected]; dmarc=pass (p=NONE dis=NONE) header.from=xxx.com [...] And this is exactly what I want. However, it often asks them for their log-in details and - when provided with right (or wrong) credentials for a user with read/write permissions - it denies them access.   • Can't access WordPress blog after host changed IP address of server

    My host changed servers and all websites now have a new IP address. I have the same domain name and I assume the host runs the same nameservers, though my host and domain name provider are different. Notes: I never entered a Name or description under General/Settings for my blog. I left them both blank. That is when I could log into it. The wp-config file, has localhost entered rather than a specific IP. Again this has always been the case and my host never advised otherwise. I can get into cPanel by simply putting the newly advised IP in front of /Cpanel. However, I can not reach the admin panel of my WordPress blog (version 2.8.2). I had been loggin into it via http://xx.xx.xxx.xx/~example/blog/wp-login.php. My host suggested to simply insert the new IP in place of the old one. I still get the error message: 404 Not Found The server can not find the requested page: Apache/2.0.63 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.63 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.12 Server at 74.50.108.14 Port 80 I followed some tips on a question on Stack Overflow of a similar nature. I have logged into phpMyAdmin and found the wp-options table and searched for SELECT * FROM `wp_options` WHERE `option_name` IN ('siteurl', 'home') Only option ID 39 came up and the results are: Home has optionvalue http://example.org siteurl has optionvalue http://example.org/blog Both of which appear correct. Is there any part of the MySQL tables where I can change an actual IP address? Or is there something else you can advise?

  • How to completely disable IPv6 for loopback interface on RHEL 5.6

    I've done lots of research on how to disable IPv6 on RedHat Linux and I have it almost completely disabled. However the loopback interface is still getting an inet6 loopback address (::1/128). I can't find where IPV6 is still enabled for loopback.   • Eclipse Indigo freezes on 'Open Type' search

    When I'm trying to search for a Java class with Ctrl-shift-T (Open Type popup), Eclipse freezes when I'm typing 1 character. It usually takes about 8 seconds to 'unfreeze', but sometimes it won't come back at all.. When it freezes, I see that the eclipse process takes about 1Gig of mem and the CPU is about 100%! I've tried creating a new workspace, adjusting the eclipse.ini (perm size, different memory values), starting with -clean and at last reinstall the whole IDE. Nothing helps..   • Can varnish cache files without specific extension or residing in specific directory

    I have a varnish installation to cache (MANY) images that my service serves. It is about 200 images of around 4k per second and varnish happily serves them according to the following rule: if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "\.(css|gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png|ico|img|tga|wmf)$") { remove req.http.cookie; return(lookup); } Now, the thing is that I recently added another service on the same server that creates thumbnails to serve but it does not add a specific extension. The files are of the following filename pattern: http://www.example.com/thumbnails/date-of-thumbnail/xxxxxxxxx.xx where xx are numbers, so xxxxxxxxx.xx could be 6482364283.73 (two numbers at the end) (actually this is the timestamp so I can keep extra info in the filename) That has the side effect that varnish does not cache them and I see them constantly being served by apache itself. Even though I can change the format from now on to create thumbs ending in .jpg, is there a way to change the vcl file of my varnish daemon to either cache everything under a directory (the thumbnails directory) or everything with two numbers at its extension? Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names? Can you mix live and non-live user accounts on a Windows 8 system? Is it possible to have a live Windows 8 user account which is not using a @live.xx email address? Is it possible to have a non-live Windows 8 user account which is using a @live.xx email address? If the gmail.com email address of the admin is not a live Windows 8 account, does this mean I can create a "fake" email and use that as the email of a new Windows 8 account? Basically I don't understand very well why there are email addresses displayed on the login screen and why there are both @live.xx and @gmail.com email addresses on the same system and answer to the questions I asked above may help me understand a bit better what is going on (I'm coming from a Linux / OS X background. I literally haven't used Windows in more than a decade).

  • Suggestion regarding pointing domains to a dedicated server.

    I recently got a dedicated server and I am still at a learning stage. So please bear with me. I wanted to have 3 domains pointed to my server, but initially I asked them the process to point me one and they responded with: Hello, I can set that rDNS for you. Please make sure the domain is pointed to our name servers at godaddy. They are: ns1.xxxxx.net ns2.xxxxx.net After this is done, please allow up to 24 hours for global propagation. Alternatively, we can host your DNS for you if you prefer. What is the domain you would like xx.xxx.xx.xx to resolve to? I then asked him to point one of my domains. They responded, Did you want us to host your dns for that domain or just an rDNS record? They also said, Hosting your DNS is a free service here. We can only do 1 domain per IP. IF you would like to purchase additional IPs, they are $1/IP per month. I personally dont want to host DNS myself. Neither mail server. I have a single IP so far. It will then start to get expensive if I want to host 25 from these guys. I am still in the trial period. Does this seem reasonable as far as pricing goes? If I want to have some one host DNS and mail server, this is getting super expensive. Email hosting from rackspace starts at $2 per mail address, but from then on, its the same if you want added features such as archiving etc; What would you suggest I do if I am on a shoe string budget but I also want to avoid hassle of doing it myself and I only have 3 domains so far and I would need few mail addresses for each of them.

  • NFS server hangs after 3 minutes

    I have a VPS running Centos 6.3 with a fully updated NFS. When I mount the NFS directory from the client, everything works perfectly fine for approximately 3 minutes, then the client hangs attempting to see the directory. nfs-utils-1.2.3-26.el6.x86_64 service nfs status rpc.svcgssd is stopped rpc.mountd (pid 2544) is running... nfsd (pid 2609 2608 2607 2606 2605 2604 2603 2602) is running... rpc.rquotad (pid 2540) is running... cat /etc/exports /home/user XX.XX.XX.20(rw,async,no_root_squash) The client is running Centos 5.8. The directory is mounted using mount x.x.x.6:/home/user /mnt When everything is working, I get the following on the client: /usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p X.X.X.6 | grep mountd 100005 1 udp 892 mountd 100005 1 tcp 892 mountd 100005 2 udp 892 mountd 100005 2 tcp 892 mountd 100005 3 udp 892 mountd 100005 3 tcp 892 mountd When it stops working, rpcinfo just hangs on the client, however running the above command on the server does return data. There are no logs on the NFS Server side that would indicate an issue. On the client side, I see: cat /var/log/messages kernel: nfs: server X.X.X.6 not responding, still trying The client and server are plugged into the same switch, however they are on different networks. The server is a VPS while the client is a dedicated box. SELINUX is in permissive mode on both client and server, and I've turned iptables off on the server to make sure that was not causing an issue. Any ideas would be helpful - right now I'm having to restart NFS every two minutes in a cron job to keep it semi working. Thanks

    I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server. In addition, I am using Zend_Mail to send the emails out.
