• Distributing a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually distributing the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt on my git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this distribution process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to distribute it in a professionnal way ?

  Here's my scenario, I need to develop a scalable application. My user base may be over 100K, every user has 10 or more small tasks. Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination. • Access an external SSH server through a restrictive proxy [on hold]

  I'm a software developer. I wish to access my computer at home through SSH. For example, I sometime need to access my personal projects source code to check how I handled specific problems. Unfortunately, I currently work under an over-restrictive and anti-productive proxy that waste a hell of a lot of everyone's time (We often have to visit websites from our smartphones or use a web proxy to check very legitimates websites for answers, and don't get me started on other "security" overkill features we have to cope with...). Well, back to the subject, I can access my home computer from my phone (SSH, port 22 and 80 both redirected by router on port 22). It works, but it's quite uncomfortable. • How to find the reason for a weekly downtime on an Ubuntu web server hosted by AWS?

  We started monitoring our web server using Pingdom and found out that we have a downtime of a few minutes every Sunday at 0:00 UTC. The test runs every minute and checks if a successful HTTP response (code 200) is returned on port 80. The test fails due to a timeout (no response after 30 seconds). Here's what we've already checked – without success: Since we run our webserver behind a load balancer, I've set the Pingdom test on the load balancer's public DNS and the webserver's public DNS in order to find out if there's a problem with the AWS load balancer – both tests return the same result We set up Munin on our webserver. Everything looked fine even after the failure. Since the last failure lasted only 2 minutes I suppose Munin couldn't capture a potential problem (it only checks every 5 minutes) I have checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and /var/log/syslog for suspicious entries I have checked /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/crontab for suspicious entries I have searched for files created or last-modified during 0:00 and 0:15 using this method: touch -t 201209020000 start touch -t 201209020015 end find / -newer start -and ! -newer end (nothing found) Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Any proposals on how to find the reason for this behavior? It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on an AWS m1.large instance. Thanks!

• How can I pull data from PeopleSoft on demand?

  I work in IT at a university and I'm working with about 5 different departments to develop a new process for students to apply to a specific school within the university (not the university as a whole). We're using a web-based college application vendor and adding the applicant questions for the school itself to the main university application. Currently the main application feeds into PeopleSoft. The IT staff here is building a new table to hold just our school's applicant data. I want to be able to access that data from PeopleSoft for use in external applications, but our IT staff doesn't really seem to understand what I'm requesting, as they simply tell me I can have access to the PS query tools. The problem is, I don't want to run just ad hoc queries, I want to be able to connect from outside PeopleSoft and show current data within the external app. I am unable to find documentation or get a clear answer to my question. Does PeopleSoft support access via a web services API or anything similar, and does that sound like the right direction for me to take?

  I am not able to connect to the remote machine from Ubuntu 11.10 machine using Web RDP. The following are the details. Obtained the license from the application jar. Keyboard: IBM101 I have removed the actual host name from the above details The error message on a pop up window is Application Error UnsatisfiedLinkError Unable to load library 'libX11':liblibX11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. This error happens soon after Applet loads. I am supposed to get a WebRDP Screen with logo then a Windows Login screen for the remote machine. ( This is working fine in Linux Mint) Anyone has experienced this problem? Any solutions?

  we have an application that is built with .Net MVC. We are now tasked with exposing API's to third parties. Members on our team want to just continue down our current path and just use more controllers so we can reuse the backend of our current application. Logic tells me we need to create a seperate service layer when more clients are going to be accessing it, but .Net MVC seems to take care of all of this. Is it really acceptable architecture to use controllers in a stand alone application to expose API's and what would be the potential gains of extracting the service layer out?

• Why does my sharepoint web part event handler lose the sender value on postback?

  I have a web part which is going to be a part of pair of connected web parts. For simplicity, I am just describing the consumer web part. This web part has 10 link buttons on it. And they are rendered in the Render method instead ofCreateChildControls as this webpart will be receiving values based on input from the provider web part. Each Link Button has a text which is decided dynamically based on the input from provider web part. When I click on any of the Link Buttons, the event handler is triggered but the text on the Link Button shows up as the one set in CreateChildControls. When I trace the code, I see that the CreateChildControls gets called before the event handler (and i think that resets my Link Buttons). How do I get the event handler to show me the dynamic text instead?   I am trying use a web service in a C# ASP.Net Web Application. The service is built in php and is located on some remote server not under my control so i cant modify it to add meta data or something else into it.   Hi, I have been busy creating an app for Red5. Imagine what was my surprise when I tried to configure basic/digest authentication and I couldn't. What struck me as strange is that I have a running tomcat instance that works and authenticates correctly with the following xmls: web.xml (part of) <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>A Protected Page</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/stats.jsp</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <login-config> <auth-method>DIGEST</auth-method> <realm-name>BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</realm-name> </login-config> <security-role> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </security-role> and a tomcat-users.xml in /conf that looks kinda like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="tomcat"/> <user username="ide" password="bogus" roles="tomcat"/> </tomcat-users> The annoying thing is that configuration authenticates correctly when on tomcat's servlet container, but on the red5's modified one, it just keeps asking for authentication. Am I becoming mad or it should work like a charm? Red5 is version 0_9_1 The stats.jsp is accessible in both servlet containers, the only difference is that when you input the correct password and username in tomcat, you are logged in, and in red5 you are not, it just keeps asking you for the password. Any pointers? Am I missing something?   To show this fundamental issue in .NET and the reason for this question, I have written a simple test web service with one method (EditString), and a consumer console app that calls it. They are both standard web service/console applications created via File/New Project, etc., so I won't list the whole code - just the methods in question: Web method: [WebMethod] public string EditString(string s, bool useSpecial) { return s + (useSpecial ? ((char)19).ToString() : ""); } [You can see it simply returns the string s if useSpecial is false. If useSpecial is true, it returns s + char 19.] Console app: TestService.Service1 service = new SCTestConsumer.TestService.Service1(); string response1 = service.EditString("hello", false); Console.WriteLine(response1); string response2 = service.EditString("hello", true); // fails! Console.WriteLine(response2); [The second response fails, because the method returns hello + a special character (ascii code 19 for argument's sake).] The error is: There is an error in XML document (1, 287) Inner exception: "'', hexadecimal value 0x13, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 287." A few points worth mentioning: The web method itself WORKS FINE when browsing directly to the ASMX file (e.g. http://localhost:2065/service1.asmx), and running the method through this (with the same parameters as in the console application) - i.e. displays XML with the string hello + char 19. Checking the serialized XML in other ways shows the special character is being encoded properly (the SERVER SIDE seems to be ok which is GOOD) So it seems the CLIENT SIDE has the issue - i.e. the .NET generated proxy class code doesn't handle special characters This is part of a bigger project where objects are passed in and out of the web methods - that contain string attributes - these are what need to work properly. i.e. we're de/serializing classes. Any suggestions for a workaround and how to implement it? Or have I completely missed something really obvious!!? Thanks in advance... PS. I've not had much luck with getting it to use CDATA tags (does .NET support these out of the box?).

  Background: I have an ASP.NET page which has a numebr of user controls within it. There are 2 user controls which are of interest. I need to display either one of them or neither of them, depending on the record selected previously. In the user controls I need to set properties of some controls which are in a FormView. So in my user control code-behind I have a number of properties which look something like this: Private ReadOnly Property phSectionReports() As PlaceHolder Get Return fvConfirmationReport.FindControl("phSectionReports") End Get End Property The problem: I am having problems with this Property. Sometimes it is returning Nothing/Null and sometimes it is throwing a NullArgumentException with the message "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: container". The exception is coming from trying to reference the fvConfirmationReport variable. fvConfirmationReport is the ID of my FormView in the page itself. So I am really after things to look for and if any ideas what sort of conditions (e.g stage in page cycle, etc.) might lead to this? An example stack trace is included below. • WPF Application Slow Unresponsive when demonstrating using remote sharing software

  After spending 14 hours on this I think its time to share my woes and see if anyone has experienced this issue before. Ill describe the issue and tests I have done to rule out certain things. Ok so I have a WPF application which loads in data from an SQL database. I am using DevExpress Components for datagrids, ribbons etc.. and FluentNhibernate to provide a session for database operations. I am also using log4net to log events to a textfile. Using the application on my laptop with SQL Express 2008 works fine.. the application starts up, retrieves 1000 records and I can tab through the controls on the ribbon. Now, I decided to demo the application to a third party and used remote login/sharing software online to share my desktop with the other person so as I could load the application on my laptop and they could view me using the application. Now, the application takes approx 45 seconds to load... 30 seconds with a blank database where as, when im not sharing out my screen using the online software the application loads in about 7-10 seconds. As well as that, even using the controls in the application during the demo were very sticky, slow and unresponsive. During the sharing session though however I was able to use other applications without any problems.. everything else worked fine. But I cannot understand how my application works ok under normal conditions , even browsing the net at the same time etc... BUT totally fails to perform correctly when I am sharing a session with another user... the CPU usage shot up to 100% too at times when the application was trying to start up... Please see below a list of 3rd party dlls I am using as references in my project. • Maintaining a Python web application: heavier vs lighter framework?

  Five+ years from now, you are hired to support and extend a data-centric web application written in Python that hasn't been kept up to date. Would you rather prefer it was written in the current version of Django/Pylons at the time, using the available standard components, or kept minimal with something like CherryPy/web.py and a few library dependencies? Heavy framework Advantages: standard approach to application design and structure, as encouraged by framework; less application code to worry about. Disadvantages: requires learning the framework to understand how things work; broken things in old version of framework difficult to fix; upgrading to new version potentially difficult due to changing APIs; finding relevant documentation/help potentially difficult due to changing APIs. Light framework Advantages: most application code is directly "visible"; only needed features are implemented; architecture should be simpler to understand; less need to upgrade external dependencies; easier to upgrade external dependencies. Disadvantages: some reinventing the wheel; non-standard design and structure (with the associated unique issues and bugs). I will update the list with any helpful answers.

  This is a less a question with a simple, practical answer and more a question to foster discussion on the real-time data exchange topic. I'll begin with an example: Google Wave is, at its core, a real-time asynchronous data synchronization engine. Wave supports (or plans to support) concurrent (real-time) document collaboration, disconnected (offline) document editing, conflict resolution, document history and playback with attribution, and server federation. A core part of Wave is the Operational Transformation engine: http://www.waveprotocol.org/whitepapers/operational-transform The OT engine manages document state. Changes between clients are merged and each client has a sane and consistent view of the document at all times; the final document is eventually consistent between all connected clients. My question is: is this system abstract or general enough to be used as a library or generic framework upon which to build web apps that synchronize real-time, asynchronous state in each client? Is the Wave protocol directly used by any current web applications (besides Google's client)? Would it make sense to directly use it for generic state synchronization in a web app? What other existing libraries or frameworks would you consider using when building such a web app? How much code in such an app might be domain-specific logic vs generic state synchronization logic? Or, put another way, how leaky might the state synchronization abstractions be? Comments and discussion welcomed!
