• Redirect from the main page on multilanguage site

  I've decided to start developing multilingual web site. Now I'm thinking about the structure. The idea is to use a simple algorithm to find out what language is most interesting to the visitor when he makes his first visit to the root page, and then forward him to the corresponding address, for example, http://example.com/en/ for English-speaking audience and http://example.com/ru/ for Russians. The question is, how search engines react on such redirect? If this approach does not take away site's reputation, which redirects should I choose: 301 or 302? I would be very grateful for the reasoned response.

• bad practice to create a print friendly page to remove the use of pdfs?

  the company I work for has a one page invoice that uses the library tcpdf. they wanted to do some design changes that I found are just incredibly difficult for setting up in .pdf format. using html/css I could easily create the page and have it print very nicely, but I have a feeling that I am over looking something. is it a good practice to set up a page just for printing? and if not, is it at least better than putting out a ugly .pdf? I could also use the CSS inline so that if they wanted to download it and open it they could.

• Font displays differently in Firefox vs. Chrome

  It seems that my menu bar is displayed with a different font stretch in Firefox than it is in Chrome. See the following: Here is the CSS applied to this element: font-variant: small-caps; font-size:13px; letter-spacing: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-stretch: normal; text-decoration: none; As far as I can tell everything regarding that font is exactly the same, yet they still display differently (see pic). • Joomla: Cross site link boxes

  I am currently evaluating Joomla for use on the the rebuild of our corporate website. One of the features our designs have is spaces for what we've been calling widgets. These widgets include common ones for each page, contact us boxes, section navigation, that all seem pretty easy to implement. The other widgets we would us to highlight specific pages within the site relevant to the one you are on, and are therefore different for each article. We've called these link widgets and these are a pretty common site on many websites. I'm honestly at a bit of a loss as to how to do this with Joomla. From a CMS perspective I'd like to allow users to just select which three link widgets they want when editing the article and have some way of creating the widgets within the CMS as well. Editing the link widget would allow setting a title, a bit of text and selecting the page that it links to. Am I going to be able to do this with Joomla, and if I can roughly how to I go about it ?

  I own three domains, say.. example.com, example.in, example.co.in I have bought the .in and .co.in TLDs only to protect the brand. But I have this question: If I make the other two also point to my hosting so that regardless of which one the user types, they are taken to the same website, will the PageRank be split into three and will each domain have one third the actual PR value? What should I do with the other two domains? Where should I point them to, if I don't intend to use them at all (i.e., what should I give in place of the ns1.myprovider.com, ns2.myprovider.com etc..?)

• Google Analytics Campaigns Not Tracking E-Commerce

  I am running email campaigns via MailChimp and tracking the success of my campaigns via Google Analytics. I can successfully see data being tracked for: Reporting > Conversions > Ecommerce (Receiving Data) Reporting > Traffic Sources > Campaigns (Receiving Data) However, I am not receiving any Ecommerce data for the individual campaigns: Reporting > Traffic Sources > Campaigns > Ecommerce (No data) So I see data like: Visits: 18,501 Revenue: $0.00 Everything I have read leads me to believe this should just "work" if Ecommerce is setup. Is there some additional action I need to take for this work? Any help would be appreciated!

• Duplicate domain names - .net and .com Create separate pages, or redirect?

  In a SEO point of view: This website has a good amount of traffic for a local business, but also ships some merchandise. While the .net domain (registered first) is associated with the local busines (google places, maps, etc...) the .com domain only redirects to the .net domain. Is it good, bad or okay to create a different page for the domain .com for example, that would be pretty simple, but would link to the 10 different categories of products that this company sells? I know links are good, so there's that, but what else is good, or bad? Thanks in advance!

  Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory One of our web properties is doing quite well without any additional links being created on the site, and our link inventory is tightly managed - no user-generated links. To introduce a community aspect to the site, we want to implement a q&a forum. Once in place, new links will populate our link inventory with keywords that are not necessarily targeted to the site. With the q&a on a sub-domain, would that not affect the main site's rankings? What's the best approach for this?

  I want to implement a rewrite rule in my .htaccess file to show a specific url as a directory of my server. See the code below I written, RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ ?page=$1 [NC] This will rewrites urls like www.mysite.com/abc/ to www.mysite.com/index.php?page=abc. But if I request www.mysite.com/abc then it is throwing an 404 error. How can I write a rewrite rule which will match www.mysite.com/abc and www.mysite.com/abc/ both? • Best way to slice up a non rectangular image?

  I have the image below and need to create a rollover for each "piece" or arrow in the circle. Because the image isn't rectangular, it boggles how me how I'm going to do this without having badly overlapping pieces. As you can see from the image below, the slices will overlap each other (quite a bit), which will not be good for the rollover. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to accomplish this without resorting to Flash or HTML5? The majority of our site's users use dinosaur browsers that don't support HTML5. • joomla ACL :: two groups permissions conflict

  I have several user groups on my website, like: Site Staff Departments -- History department -- Physics department -- Foreign languages department -- IT department etc I also have several categories, like: News About ... Departments -- History department -- Physics department -- Foreign languages department -- IT department etc Users in Site Staff group can edit entire site, except for Departments categories (I've set Deny permission for it). Each Department user group can edit only its corresponding category. I have successfully implemented all this. The question is: If a user belongs to two groups (Site Staff and Physics department - for instance) - he should be able to edit the whole site, except for Departments category. And also he should be able to edit Physics department category - this is what I cannot implement. Can you suggest any ideas?

• Weird keywords in google webmaster tools

  I just happened to check the keywords list on Google Webmaster Tools for my site, which is an educational content site about finance. To my big surprise, after the first keyword, which is 'finance', I found amongst the 20 highest ranked (!) entries words like: mysql, server, adobe, flash, player, homez. What (i'm tempted to add "the heck") does that mean ? Is that something I should worry about? If so, how did these get there and how can I eliminate these / avoid they get into that list ?   I've been looking for a suitable set of HTML5/CSS3 foundation files to start new projects on. I started off piecing together my own files, but I believe I might be better served in finding a solid and fairly compatible(with me) CSS3/HTML5 framework and then tweaking certain things that may not best suit my own process. I'd love to find something that is responsive and that includes aspects focusing on layout, type(hor and vert baselines), form and interface components, cross-browser issues, and preferably built on something other than a just imple css reset, but that does include rebuilding elements consistently across browsers for a clean work slate. Extra features like polyfills or others area great, as is good documentation and examples. So far, off the top of my head I know of, Skeleton 1140 Grid 320 & Up (plus BP) HTML5 Boilerplate 2.0 and Mobile Inuit.css Less Framework Fluir Perkins.Less A few WP themes Are there any great one I don't know about? I work a lot in WP, and something that is easily incorporated (but also stand alone) is ideal. Plugins and wide set feature while maintaining the ability to cut it down when needed(flexibility) is also a big plus, and in par with a faster learning, since I want to start using whatever I find immediately . What are some of the better options you guys might be able to recommend? Systems or scripts, plugins, and other related tools are also welcome, Thanks!

  We currently use a hashbang for the portion of our site that generates dynamic content which can also be deep linked. Our analytics team wants to use utm params to track the referral traffic from social networks. We are using Universal Analytics (analytics.js) as well as GTM. Will GA pick up the query parameters after the hashbang or does it always have to go before? For example: example.com/#!/some/content?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar example.com?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar/#!/some/content In #1, I'm concerned that the utm params won't be recorded and in #2 the page will break or the url could be incorrectly written. How does GA pull in those parameters - location.search? regex? Can I get away with using either?

The problem is, local traffic can browse fine but remote traffic is directed to the root folder and getting 403d (because I have that folder blocked off through my .htaccess file). If I append /public to the URL it works fine.

• What does Enable/Disable mean in Bing's URL Normalization feature?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

  I have a series of utilities to generate Google sitemaps for my whole site. These files are massive, and slow to build. We want to start telling Google these pages are mobile-crawl-able too, by adding them to mobile sitemaps, but the documentation is unclear if I need to specify physically different files for my mobile URLs than for my normal ones. • chmod 700 and htaccess deny from all enough?

  I would like to protect a public directory from public view. None of the files will ever be viewed online. I chmoded the directory to 700 and created an htaccess file that has "deny from all" inside it. Is this enough security or can a hacker still gain access to the files? I know some people will say that hackers can get into anything, but I just want to make sure that there isn't anything else I can do to make it harder to hack. Reply: I am asking if chmod 700 and deny from all is enough security alone to prevent hackers from getting my files. Thanks.
