• Java Refuses to Start - Could not reserve enough space for object heap

  Background We have a pool of aproximately 20 linux blades. Some are running Suse, some are running Redhat. ALL share NAS space which contains the following 3 folders: /NAS/app/java - a symlink that points to an installation of a Java JDK. Currently version 1.5.0_10 /NAS/app/lib - a symlink that points to a version of our application. /NAS/data - directory where our output is written All our machines have 2 processors (hyperthreaded) with 4gb of physical memory and 4gb of swap space. We limit the number of 'jobs' each machine can process at a given time to 6 (this number likely needs to change, but that does not enter into the current problem so please ignore it for the time being). Some of our jobs set a Max Heap size of 512mb, some others reserve a Max Heap size of 2048mb. Again, we realize we could go over our available memory if 6 jobs started on the same machine with the heap size set to 2048, but to our knowledge this has not yet occurred. The Problem Once and a while a Job will fail immediately with the following message: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. We used to chalk this up to too many jobs running at the same time on the same machine. The problem happened infrequently enough (MAYBE once a month) that we'd just restart it and everything would be fine. The problem has recently gotten much worse. All of our jobs which request a max heap size of 2048m fail immediately almost every time and need to get restarted several times before completing. We've gone out to individual machines and tried executing them manually with the same result. Debugging It turns out that the problem only exists for our SuSE boxes. The reason it has been happening more frequently is becuase we've been adding more machines, and the new ones are SuSE. 'cat /proc/version' on the SuSE boxes give us: Linux version 2.6.5-7.244-bigsmp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Dec 12 18:32:25 UTC 2005 'cat /proc/version' on the RedHat boxes give us: Linux version 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-52)) #1 SMP Tue May 17 17:52:23 EDT 2005 'uname -a' gives us the following on BOTH types of machines: UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux No jobs are running on the machine, and no other processes are utilizing much memory. All of the processes currently running might be using 100mb total. 'top' currently shows the following: Mem: 4146528k total, 3536360k used, 610168k free, 132136k buffers Swap: 4194288k total, 0k used, 4194288k free, 3283908k cached 'vmstat' currently shows the following: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 0 610292 132136 3283908 0 0 0 2 26 15 0 0 100 0 If we kick off a job with the following command line (Max Heap of 1850mb) it starts fine: java/bin/java -Xmx1850M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Hello World If we bump up the max heap size to 1875mb it fails: java/bin/java -Xmx1875M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. It's quite clear that the memory currently being used is for Buffering/Caching and that's why so little is being displayed as 'free'. What isn't clear is why there is a magical 1850mb line where anything higher means Java can't start. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

• Modern alternatives to Java

  I have been a Java developer for 14 years and have written an enterprise-level (~500 kloc) Swing application that uses most of the standard library APIs. Recently, I have become disappointed with the progress that the language has made to "modernize" itself, and am looking for an alternative for ongoing development. I have considered moving to the .NET platform, but I have issues with using something the only runs well in Windows (I know about Mono, but that is still far behind Microsoft). I also plan on buying a new Macbook Pro as soon as Apple releases their new rumored Arrandale-based machines and want to develop in an environment that will feel "at home" in Unix/Linux. I have considered using Python or Ruby, but the standard Java library is arguably the largest of any modern language. In JVM-based languages, I looked at Groovy, but am disappointed with its performance. Rumor has it that with the soon-to-be released JDK7, with its InvokeDynamic instruction, this will improve, but I don't know how much. Groovy is also not truly a functional language, although it provides closures and some of the "functional" features on collections. It does not embrace immutability. I have narrowed my search down to two JVM-based alternatives: Scala and Clojure. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. I am looking for opinions. I am not an expert at either of these languages; I have read 2 1/2 books on Scala and am currently reading Stu Halloway's book on Clojure. Scala is strongly statically typed. I know the dynamic language folks claim that static typing is a crutch for not doing unit testing, but it does provide a mechanism for compile-time location of a whole class of errors. Scala is more concise than Java, but not as much as Clojure. Scala's inter-operation with Java seems to be better than Clojure's, in that most Java operations are easier to do in Scala than in Clojure. For example, I can find no way in Clojure to create a non-static initialization block in a class derived from a Java superclass. For example, I like the Apache commons CLI library for command line argument parsing. In Java and Scala, I can create a new Options object and add Option items to it in an initialization block as follows (Java code): final Options options = new Options() { { addOption(new Option("?", "help", false, "Show this usage information"); // other options } }; I can't figure out how to the same thing in Clojure (except by using (doit...)), although that may reflect my lack of knowledge of the language. Clojure's collections are optimized for immutability. They rarely require copy-on-write semantics. I don't know if Scala's immutable collections are implemented using similar algorithms, but Rich Hickey (Clojure's inventor) goes out of his way to explain how that language's data structures are efficient. Clojure was designed from the beginning for concurrency (as was Scala) and with modern multi-core processors, concurrency takes on more importance, but I occasionally need to write simple non-concurrent utilities, and Scala code probably runs a little faster for these applications since it discourages, but does not prohibit, "simple" mutability. One could argue that one-off utilities do not have to be super-fast, but sometimes they do tasks that take hours or days to complete. I know that there is no right answer to this "question", but I thought I would open it up for discussion. Are there other JVM-based languages that can be used for enterprise level development?

• Recursively created linked lists with a class, C++

  I'm using C++ to recursively make a hexagonal grid (using a multiply linked list style). I've got it set up to create neighboring tiles easily, but because I'm doing it recursively, I can only really create all 6 neighbors for a given tile. Obviously, this is causing duplicate tiles to be created and I'm trying to get rid of them in some way. Because I'm using a class, checking for null pointers doesn't seem to work. It's either failing to convert from my Tile class to and int, or somehow converting it but not doing it properly. I'm explicitly setting all pointers to NULL upon creation, and when I check to see if it still is, it says it's not even though I never touched it since initialization. Is there a specific way I'm supposed to do this? I can't even traverse the grid without NULLs of some kind Here's some of my relevant code. Yes, I know it's embarassing. Oh and I'm also aware that I haven't set up the list fully. It's only one direction now.

• Converting OCaml to F#: F# equivelent of Pervasives at_exit

  I am converting the OCaml Format module to F# and tracked a problem back to a use of the OCaml Pervasives at_exit. val at_exit : (unit -> unit) -> unit Register the given function to be called at program termination time. The functions registered with at_exit will be called when the program executes exit, or terminates, either normally or because of an uncaught exception. The functions are called in "last in, first out" order: the function most recently added with at_exit is called first. In the process of conversion I commented out the line as the compiler did not flag it as being needed and I was not expecting an event in the code. I checked the FSharp.PowerPack.Compatibility.PervasivesModule for at_exit using VS Object Browser and found none. I did find how to run code "at_exit"? and How do I write an exit handler for an F# application? The OCaml line is at_exit print_flush with print_flush signature: val print_flush : (unit -> unit) Also in looking at the use of it during a debug session of the OCaml code, it looks like at_exit is called both at the end of initialization and at the end of each use of a call to the module. Any suggestions, hints on how to do this. This will be my first event in F#. EDIT Here is some of what I have learned about the Format module that should shed some light on the problem. The Format module is a library of functions for basic pretty printer commands of simple OCaml values such as int, bool, string. The format module has commands like print_string, but also some commands to say put the next line in a bounded box, think new set of left and right margins. So one could write: print_string "Hello" or open_box 0; print_string "<<"; open_box 0; print_string "p \/ q ==> r"; close_box(); print_string ">>"; close_box() The commands such as open_box and print_string are handled by a loop that interprets the commands and then decides wither to print on the current line or advance to the next line. The commands are held in a queue and there is a state record to hold mutable values such as left and right margin. The queue and state needs to be primed, which from debugging the test cases against working OCaml code appears to be done at the end of initialization of the module but before the first call is made to any function in the Format module. The queue and state is cleaned up and primed again for the next set of commands by the use of mechanisms for at_exit that recognize that the last matching frame for the initial call to the format modules has been removed thus triggering the call to at_exit which pushes out any remaining command in the queue and re-initializes the queue and state. So the sequencing of the calls to print_flush is critical and appears to be at more than what the OCaml documentation states.

Question: Is there a way to lock the WorkingSet (the green line) to 1GB, to avoid the spike in page faults (the red lines) that occur when allocating new memory into the process? p.s. Every time a page fault occurs, it blocks the thread for 250us, which hits application performance badly.

When I check the checkbox and scroll it down to check some other items in the list view, the older ones are unchecked. How to avoid this problem in listview? Please guide me with my code. In case of collision, it doesn't matter which value is saved to the dict as long as it's consistent.

• How to inject AutoMapper IMappingEngine with StructureMap

  Most of the examples I've found for Automapper use the static Mapper object for managing type mappings. For my project, I need to inject an IMapperEngine as part of object construction using StructureMap so that we can mock the mapper in unit tests so we can't use the static mapper. I also need to support configuring AutoMapper Profiles. My question is how can I configure the StructureMap registry so that it can supply an instance of IMappingEngine when an instance of MyService is constructed. • HTTP client - HTTP 405 error "Method not allowed". I send a HTTP Post but for some reason HTTP Get i

  Hey I am using apache library. I have created a class which sends a post request to a servlet. I have set up the parameters for the client and i have created a HTTP post object to be sent but for some reason when i excute the request i get a reposnse that says the get method is not supported(which is true cause i have only made a dopost method in my servlet). It seems that a get request is being sent but i dont know why. The post method worked before but i started gettng http error 417 "Expectation Failed" which i fixed by adding paramenters. below is my class with the post method. • Can't connect to WCF service on Android

In summary, the first problem was the program being unable to open a connection due to missing methods or libraries due to using vanilla kSOAP2 rather than a modified library for Android (kSOAP2-Android). The second issue was a settings issue. Although it works, when I run the site in Internet Explorer, a security warning comes up similar to this: The current webpage is trying to open a site in your Trusted sites list. Do you want to allow this? Current site: http://www.facebook.com Trusted site: http://localhost" My Facebook code involves these two: http://static.ak.connect.facebook.com/js/api_lib/v0.4/FeatureLoader.js.php http://static.ak.connect.facebook.com/js/api_lib/v0.4/XdCommReceiver.js I tried changing them to HTTPS: https://ssl.connect... but the errors still appear. None of my pages use SSL. I've also tried turning facebook-logo='false' but still no luck. Any ideas on how to fix this? Although it's not show-stopping, it doesn't give a good impression to users who may be feel it insecure. Thanks

But now it breaks all my code: I can't override GetHashCode for my POCO objects = I can't override Equals = I can't implement Value Object and Entity Object patters for my POCO objects. So, I appreciate any solutions, workarounds here etc.

  I've posted a bigger chunk of the code below. You can see that initially QUOTE was procedural- coded in place. I'm trying to learn how to use declarative design so I want to do the same thing but by using resources. It seems like I need to access the string.xml thru the @R.id tag and identify QUOTE with that string value. But I don't know enough to negotiate this. Any tips? • SPP Socket createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord will not connect

  Hello, I want to use Android 2.1 to connect to an external Bluetooth device, wich is offering an SPP port to me. In this case it is an external GPS unit. When I'm trying to connect I can't connect an established socket while being in the "client" mode. Then if I try to set up a socket (being in the server role), to RECEIVE text from my PC everything works just fine. The Computer can connect as the client to the Socket on the Phone via SPP using the SSP UUID or some random UUID. So the Problem is not that I'm using the wrong UUID. But the other way around (e.g. calling connect on the established client socket) createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(UUID uuid)) just doesn't work. Sadly I don't have the time to inspect the problem further. It would be greate If somebody could point me the right way. In the following part of the Logfile has to be the Problem.   Hi, Im having issues with my WCF service. I need to do a windsor container injection pre application_start and noticed i can use the AppInitialise method. It works on visual studio debug but when I deploy to IIS the code does not get fired.. I initialized the class as follows public static class Class1 { public static void AppInitialize() { IWindsorContainer container; container = new WindsorContainer("windsor.xml"); container.AddFacility(); container.Resolve(); } } Is there any special task i need to do to get this to work on IIS. • WPF ComboBox Binding breaks when using ControlTemplate

  I have a WPF ComboBox that has been working fine until I recently created a ControlTemplate for it to enable me to change the color of the DropDown arrow. The ComboBox still works correctly except the Bound Text value now just shows the name of the Business Object rather than the bound value. I guess that binding like Text="{Binding Path=CaseDateRange}" no longer works when using a ControlTemplate, yet the ItemsSource binding on the dropdown seems to still work fine. Can anyone offer some help with how I need to change my binding when using a ControlTemplate.   Hi, On a webserver (shared hosting provider) I published a website with a ADO.Net Framework model in use with MySql Connector 6.3.1. When I request a page, a Security Exception will be happen with this error messages: "LinkDemand The type of the first permission that failed was: System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission The Zone of the assembly that failed was: MyComputer ". This exception raised when code collect the listeners of a tracksource: public class MySqlTrace { private static TraceSource source = new TraceSource("mysql"); static MySqlTrace() { foreach (TraceListener listener in source.Listeners) // <-- Exception throw here { // ... } } } The web.config doesn't have any trace data or system.diagnostics. My question is, why will a get a LinkDemand security exception during collecting the source listeners. What can maybe be wrong in here?

Attached dependency property in WindowBase class (outside class hierarchy = generated error): public static readonly DependencyProperty AreaColorProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("AreaColor", typeof(AreaColor), typeof(Window)); TemplateBinding that fails {TemplateBinding local:WindowBase.AreaColor} If I instead define the attached dependency property in a class within the class heirarchy and set the owner to this class, then I don't get any errors, why is this? Most fn+key are working except for: brightness keys (fn+f5/fn+f6) don't work. fn+c - gamma keys fc+v - camera fn+space - toggle speed. I really like, at least, to have the brightness keys working.
