Speaking in St. Louis on June 14th

I’m going back to speak in St. Louis next month. I didn’t make it last year and I’m looking forward to it. You can find additional details on the St. Louis SQL Server user group web site. The meeting will be held at the Microsoft office and I’ll be speaking at 1PM. I’ll be speaking on the procedure cache. As people get better and better tuning queries this is the next major piece to understand. We’ll talk about how and when query plans are reused. The most common issue I see around odd query plans are stored procedures that use one query plan but the queries run completely different when you extract the SQL and hard code the parameters. That’s just one of the common issues that I’ll address. There will be a second speaker after I’m done, then a short vendor presentation and a drawing for a netbook.

Keeping websites from knowing where I live

This questions is related to issues and practicality, not security. I live in Brazil and, apparently, every single website I visit knows about it. Usually that's okay. But there are quite a few sites that don't make use of that information adequately. For instance: Bing keeps thinking that Brazilian pages are way more relevant to me than American ones (which they're not). google.com always redirects me to google.com.br Microsoft automatically sends me to horribly translated support pages in Portuguese (which would just be easier to read in English). These are just a few examples. Usually it's stuff I can live with (or work around), but some of them are just plain irritating. I have geolocation disabled in Firefox, so I guess they're either getting this information from my IP or from Windows itself (which I bought here). Is there a way to avoid this? Either tell them nothing or make them think I live somewhere else?

GIS-based data visualization and maintenance tool

Background Looking to leverage an existing GIS system for exploring organizational data. Architecture The following figure represents a high-level overview of the system's desired features: The most basic usage would be as follows: The user visits a web site. The system presents a map (having regions, cities, and buildings). The user drills-down on the map to a particular building. The system provides a basic CRUD interface. The user can view and modify information about personnel (e.g., their assigned teams), equipment (e.g., network appliances), applications, and the building itself (e.g., contact and phone numbers). Ideally, all the components should be open-source (or otherwise free). Problem This must be a small project that needs a quick (but functional) prototype, mostly to confirm whether or not such a system would be useful in the long term. Questions What software components would you use to quickly develop a working prototype? What open-source solutions already exist, if any? Ideas Here is what I am thinking: PostGIS - Define the regions, cities, and sites Google Maps - Display an interactive, clickable map geoJSON - Protocol between PostGIS and Google Maps Seam - CRUD interface Custom Development For example, this would entail: Installation and configuration Configure SSH for remote logins Subversion (or git) PostgreSQL PostGIS Java Tomcat Seam JasperReports Enter GIS information into PostGIS Aggregate data sources into PostgreSQL database Develop starting page for map interface Develop clickable Google Maps interface Develop summary reports Develop CRUD interface using Seam for data maintenance Surely something like this already exists? MEncoder Install on Ubuntu

I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. For examples when I try sudo apt-get install mencoder the following errors comes out: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Because it is our latest patch release and it is chock-full of good stuff for the Oracle VM 3.0 user. Oracle VM support customers can find it on My Oracle Support as patch number 14736185. This can be installed on Oracle VM 3.0.x systems as an incremental patch on top of 3.0.3, so if you previously ran 3.0.3 GA or updated to 3.0.3 patch 1 ( build 150) this will just apply on top. Code Contracts and Pex at MSDN Live 2010

One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex. Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008). Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. Start to get it from here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx . The current version as of 14.4.10 is 0.9, which works with the 2010 RC. A new version is due this week. Logging Apache2 payload to evaluate SOAP message

I am trying to log webservice specific information with Apache (Apache acts as a load-balancer by use of mod_jk). For instance I want to know how long the responsetime of each webservice-call takes. To do this I definitely would need to know the name of the webservice-method in the log-file. As a matter of fact, the name of the webservice-method is wrapped in the SOAP-body, to which I have no access to with the default-configuration. Does anybody know an Apache module to extend the log-information? Or are there any other ideas to solve this challenge? Thx!

cannot login to ubuntu 14.04

I upgraded my Hp g6 from ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 yesterday. Now I cannot log into the system using ubuntu/unity But I can still login using i3 windows manager. I checked and found the ubuntu-desktop is broken. I tried to reinstall it, it complained about the dependency issue and broken package. some packages could not be installed. Empirical evidence for choice of programming paradigm to address a problem

The C2 wiki has a discussion of Empirical Evidence for Object-Oriented Programming that basically concludes there is none beyond appeal to authority. This was last edited in 2008. Discussion here seems to bear this out: questions on whether OO is outdated, when functional programming is a bad choice and the advantages and disadvantages of AOP are all answered with contributors' opinions without reliance on evidence. Of course, opinions of established and reputed practitioners are welcome and valuable things to have, but they're more plausible when they're consistent with experimental data. Does this evidence exist? Is evidence-based software engineering a thing? Specifically, if I have a particular problem P that I want to solve by writing software, does there exist a body of knowledge, studies and research that would let me see how the outcome of solving problems like P has depended on the choice of programming paradigm? I know that which paradigm comes out as "the right answer" can depend on what metrics a particular study pays attention to, on what conditions the study holds constant or varies, and doubtless on other factors too. That doesn't affect my desire to find this information and critically appraise it. It becomes clear that some people think I'm looking for a "turn the crank" solution - some sausage machine into which I put information about my problem and out of which comes a word like "functional" or "structured". This is not my intention. What I'm looking for is research into how - with a lot of caveats and assumptions that I'm not going into here but good literature on the matter would - certain properties of software vary depending on the problem and the choice of paradigm. In other words: some people say "OO gives better flexibility" or "functional programs have fewer bugs" - (part of) what I'm asking for is the evidence of this. The rest is asking for evidence against this, or the assumptions under which these statements are true, or evidence showing that these considerations aren't important. There are plenty of opinions on why one paradigm is better than another; is there anything objective behind any of these?

missing libjpeg.so.62 from ia32 shared library

I am trying to install a chemical/molecular biology modeling program called Molsoft ICM-Pro. Initially after downloading the program and trying to open, it gave me error messages that I was missing shared libraries, and after talking with my network administrator he recommended I install the ia32 shared libraries using sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Which gives sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ia32-libs is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. so I am assuming the libraries installed correctly, but now when I try to run the program I get this error: ubuntu:/home/reilly/icmd icm icm: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So my question is, where can I get the library containing libjpeg.so.62? Additionally, I was told I would need libXmu.so.6 and libtiff.so.3 . Is there a shared library that could be missing that would contain these files? I am an ubuntu noob, so sorry if the information I provided was unclear. Any help would be immensely appreciated! btw I am using ubuntu 12.04 dual boot with windows on an HP pavilion dv6

Running Mac OS X 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

Somehow my home directory on my Mac has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and Mac OS X has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

How to remove IIS/ASP.NET Response Headers

I have a couple IIS/6.0 servers that security is asking me to remove a couple of response headers that are sent to client browsers on requests. They are concerned about divulging platform information through response headers. I have removed all the HTTP-HEADERS out of the IIS configuration for the website (X-Powered-By or some such header). (I personally do know that this information can be easily found out, even if it is hidden, but it isn't my call.) Headers I want to remove: Server - Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-AspNet-Version - 2.0.50727 I also know that ASP.NET MVC also emits its own header too, if you know how to remove it also, that would be helpful. How can you print a text file via gedit from the command line?

I'd like to use gedit or some similar program just as a page formatter and pipe some text through it and onto the printer. | lpr just doesn't cut it in the presentation department. The printed output is subpar, even if I try to tinker with the margin and font size options. But I like the way text looks like when printed from gedit. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds and use a command line pipeline to print a text file with gedit-quality formatting?
