  • Primary reasons why programming language runtimes use stacks?

    Many programming language runtime environments use stacks as their primary storage structure (e.g. see JVM bytecode to runtime example). Quickly recalling I see following advantages: Simple structure (pop/push), trivial to implement Most processors are anyway optimized for stack operations, so it is very fast Less problems with memory fragmentation, it is always about moving memory-pointer up and down for allocation and freeing complete blocks of memory by resetting the pointer to the last entry offset. Is the list complete or did I miss something? Are there programming language runtime environments which are not using stacks for storage at all?

    Given Toyota's recent issues and the ENORMOUS amount of safety that is being relegated to computers, how long do you think it will be before programming, or perhaps programming certain things (embedded transportation software, (air) traffic control, electrical grid, hospital equipment, nuclear plant security, planes, etc.) becomes regulated? And/or, how long before there will be certain regulated certifications before you can call yourself a "software developer", like Architects and Engineers have now? (NB: I'm from the US, so I don't know how it works in other countries; please forgive my ignornace.)

  • asp.net mvc route clashing with physical path in IIS7

    I'm messing about with controller organisation and I've hit a problem. If I have the following physical structure /Home/HomeController.cs /Home/Index.aspx /Home/About.aspx and I request the URI: /Home/Index I get a 403 Directory Listing Denied :( (im using a custom IControllerFactory and IViewEngine to look in this non-default path) Why is this happening? (I know the 403 is because its hitting the /Home folder, but why is it hitting the folder?) Why doesn't the UrlRoutingModule rewrite the route and let the controller pick up the request? Application_BeginRequest fires, but then it seems to pass control back to IIS to try and serve from the filesystem. Is it the UrlRoutingModule that defaults to a physical path if it exists before rewriting? Is there a way to make this work? N.B. Please don't suggest relocating my controllers etc. I know this is an obvious option, but that isn't the question ;) Using IIS7 In Integrated Mode Thanks

  • Routing problem, handling differently online versus local - MVC.net 1.0

    I have there lines in my RegisterToutes : routes.MapRoute("Pages3", "{url1}/{url2}/{url3}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); routes.MapRoute("Pages2", "{url1}/{url2}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); routes.MapRoute("Pages1", "{url1}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); On my local machine and on my demo server (demo.myserver.com/myproject/) it works great for handling the 404, but live(www.mysite.com) it just go to the IIS 404. I have a PageController witch go see if the page exist in the DB and if it don't I return to a 404 view with the status code 404 (Response.StatusCode = 404;) How can I reproduce the same behavior live? Do I need to setup something on IIS? I'm on winserver 2008 using c# and MVC 1.0. Thanks for the help!

    PLEASE READ THE FULL QUESTION BEFORE POST YOUR ANSWER Hello guys! I'm currently developing a "Extremelly customized Installer Application" in C# for installing a old classic ASP application. It'll be used during the 2.0 version is developed (ASP.NET MVC with C#). As its so different from the efault install packages, I've made it as normal windows application, not as setup application (a setup application don't let us customize so much as I need). And here is the problem: As its a windows application, I must "Release" it and send the compiled .EXE with the .DLLs, I must not "Publish" because if i do so, the published .EXE will "install the installer" and not my application. I need a way to verify and install the .NET Framework 3.5 like a bootstrap package prerequisite used in publishing option, but remember that I'm not publishing, I'm doing a "Release" build.     My case I want to get the capability of doing anything in C# from building applications to solving problems. I searched for and tried to read books. Then one of the experts said that reading books will not make any good and that to learn, you have to solve real world problems in C#, and he gave me some problems which I previously solved in C++. The thing is that while I know the internal logic of solving the problem, I don't know how to implement it using C# efficiently. I know the message to pass but not the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever I was doing it in tougher way. What I need to get hold of the language and get the ability to code in C# proficiently?

  • How do web servers enforce the same-origin policy?

    I'm diving deeper into developing RESTful APIs and have so far worked with a few different frameworks to achieve this. Of course I've run into the same-origin policy, and now I'm wondering how web servers (rather than web browsers) enforce it. From what I understand, some enforcing seems to happen on the browser's end (e.g., honoring a Access-Control-Allow-Origin header received from a server). But what about the server? For example, let's say a web server is hosting a Javascript web app that accesses an API, also hosted on that server. I assume that server would enforce the same-origin policy --- so that only the javascript that is hosted on that server would be allowed to access the API. This would prevent someone else from writing a javascript client for that API and hosting it on another site, right? So how would a web server be able to stop a malicious client that would try to make AJAX requests to its api endpoints while claiming to be running javascript that originated from that same web server? What's the way most popular servers (Apache, nginx) protect against this kind of attack? Or is my understanding of this somehow off the mark? Or is the cross-origin policy only enforced on the client end?

    As a grad student, I find it more and more common for prestigious companies (like Google, Facebook, Microsoft,...) to put algorithm questions in their test and interviews. A few startups I applied to also asked about algorithms. I wonder if algorithms fluency is the most important thing for software developer in those companies? If the answer being yes, what are the best method or resources for one to learn & practice about algorithms effectively? I can't seem to get interested in solving seemingly too complicated problems found in most textbook or websites. Though easily understand basic algorithms (like quicksort, bubblesort,...), I find it immensely difficult to remember and reuse them later. Thanks. P/S: If you ask me what I like, it's building good softwares to solve users' problems innovatively. I suppose that does not necessarily mean the software has to be very complicated.

  • What did I do wrong here when trying to unit test a class that references a web service

    So I had a class that referenced a class that referenced another class that called a web service. So I learn how to create an interface using partial classes. I inject the web service through the constructor. Then my unit test fails because I am newing up the actual web service in the second level of the class. So I end up modifying all three classes to pass the web service down through the constructor... was not happy :-( gave up.... what should I be doing in this case?

  • Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

    I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea? This doesn't have to be terribly hard - I did the language that must not be named - but it will force you to learn a lot of the important parts of C. If you don't want to write a lexer and/or parser yourself, you can use lex/flex and yacc/bison, but if you plan on that you might want to start with a somewhat smaller project. I was kinda intrigued about the implementing a programming language answer and I'm wondering how do I go about starting this? I've gone through the whole K&R book and I've done some of the exercises as well. I also have a bit of experience in C++ and Java if that matters. Any tips? Thanks!

    Hi there, I am implementing a CMS, the case is that the "Web-Editable" is in a different domain thus, I would be able just get the page using HttpRequest in order to copy and show it in the CMS server to make it able to change it (DOM just visual purpose) and save the changes to the CSS and JavaScript folder on the "Web-Editable" using FTP. I am not allow to download all the information included on the "Web-Editable" trough the FTP, and there are other dinamic images as well comming from a private database.
