  • Creating an invisible button in Java Swing

    Hello, I have seen many times on Java Swing GUIs buttons that look like images until the mouse rolls over them. They appear to not have their content area filled. When the mouse rolls over them, the content area fills in but the button looks as though the mouse is not hovering over it. An example of this would be the toolbar of buttons used to activate each demo in SwingSet2. How is this effect possible? Thanks!

  • Running a Java program with input from a file

    I am writing a program that reads the input from a file and then prints it to the screen. When I run it without taking the input from the file, it works perfectly fine. However, every time I try to run it from the file it gives me an "Exception in thread "main" java.util.NoSuchElementException: No line found at" error that occurs every place the input is suppose to be read. I have no idea what is going on.

I have written a rather bad wrapper class, but does anyone know of where to get a better one?   • Java: file write on finalize method

    In my understanding a singleton object will destroy only when the application is about to terminate. So in C++ I write a Singleton class to log my application and in that Singleton logger's destructor I log the time when my application was terminated. Things worked perfectly in C++. Now I want to have that same logger in Java, as in java there is no destructor so I implemented the finalize method for that singleton logger. But it seem that finalize method actually never get called. So, I add that System.runFinalizersOnExit(true); line, somewhere in my code (though I know it is deprecated) and that finalize method get called every time before termination of the app. But still there is a problem! If I try to write anything on file in that finalize method, It does not work, though System.out work without any problem! :( Can you guys help me on this problem?   • Java Packages in Seperate repository than others

    I was wondering if it's possible to have a java package setup using a different subversion repository than the rest. Ideally, I would probably go with a different library project, but in the case of BlackBerry, the 3rd party library linking does not work well, so I would like to just separate my UI package into a different repository than the rest so that I can control the UI better for different OS versions, but leave all the other packages the same. Is this possible?

    I have a java.util.Set<City> cities and I need to add cities to this set in 2 ways: By adding individual city (with the help of cities.add(city) method call) By adding another set of cities to this set (with the help of cities.addAll(anotherCitiesSet) method call) But the problem in second approach is that i don't know whether there were any duplicate cities in the anotherCitiesSet. I want to do some processing whenever a duplicate entry is tried to be entered in thecities set.

    java.util.zip sucks for stream compression. The longer you leave an Inflator/Deflator open without calling end(), the more native memory it uses up. This is a known issue: http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=4797189 which nobody seems to care about fixing. What is a good alternative? Preferably one that is free and is still actively supported by its developers.

    Is there a third party library to detect the use of a Java 1.5 library when compiling with a 1.5 compiler with -source 1.4 and -target 1.4? I could use a 1.4 rt.jar in the bootclasspath however I hope there is a better way. To be used, for example, to fail the compile/build if a newer library is used.

    In Java if an input argument to a method is invalid, we can throw an IllegalArgumentException (which is of type RuntimeException). In C++, there is no notion of checked and unchecked exceptions. Is there a similar exception in standard C++ which can be used to indicate a runtime exception? Or is there a common style not in the standard but everyone follows in practice for a situation like this? Or, should I just create my own custom exception and throw it?
