• Using tarantula to test a Rails app

  I'm using Tarantula to test a Rails app I'm developing. It works pretty well, but I'm getting some strange 404s. After looking into it, Tarantula is following DELETE requests (destroy actions on controllers) throughout my app when it tests. Since Tarantula gets the index action first (and seems to keep a list of unvisited URLs), it eventually tries to follow a link to a resource which it had deleted... and gets a 404. Tarantula is right that the URL doesn't exist anymore (because it deleted the resource itself). However, it's flagging it as an error -- that's hardly the behavior I would expect. I'm basically just using the Rails scaffolding and this problem is happening. How do I prevent Tarantula doing this? (Or, is there a better way of specifying the links?) I want to build up statistics on which features people use and how they use them, so that I can measure the value of features I'm implementing. This feedback of course will be off by default and anonymous. Does anyone know of any frameworks that have been developed that can achieve this without me having to write stuff from scratch?

• Taking web page screen shot in Windows 8 Metro app

  I'm trying to take screen shot of web page in Windows 8 Metro app. So far the only helpful control is the WebView. Unfortunately it does not contain any method like DrawToBitmap (known from Forms WebBrowser control). Am I missing something? Different approach would focus on injecting some JS (e.g. html2canvas) to page rendered in WebView but I don't think it is possible due to security reasons. I would greatly appreciate any help.

• JQuery overlay - issues with opening twitter "Allow Access" box

  Hey guys I'm using Jquery flowplayer tools overlay to open external links. External links are working fine with this piece of code shown in the link: http://www.demiseonline.com/misc/Iframeoverlay.html Now using this overlay - I wanted to open the twitter dialog which asks users to Allow access to their account. So in the code below, I replaced http://www.google.com with https://twitter.com/oauth/authenticate?oauth_token=VPVRIsnRz9IX4CAab7brert3jHiEs <div class="apple_overlay black" id="Overlay1" <iframe src ="http://www.google.com" width="100%" height="595px" frameborder="0" </iframe </div When I replace the code, as soon as I load the page, even before I click on the link to open the overlay - the page gets redirected to the twitter URL. Any idea why that happens for this URL. Thanks

My question is, how to use BDD with private methods? How can I unit test private methods? Is there better solution than: - making private methods public first and then making them private when I write public method that uses those private methods; or - in C# making all private methods internal and using InternalsVisibleTo attribute. • Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

  I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

• How can I include utility functions from another file into a Sproutcore unit test file?

  Lets say I have a few utility functions in file tests/utils/functions.js. I would like to use these functions from several unit test files. However, I'm not able to use them as the Sproutcore build system does not include any external files into the html page used to run the unit tests. Only application code and the code from the unit tests to be run are included. So is it possible to somehow include Javascript files to be used in unit test files in Sproutcore? I could add the functions.js file into some other directory inside my application to be able to use them. However, this is not what I want to do as the utility functions are useless in final production build and would only make my application larger.

• Display Spry results in Jquery modal dialog

  I am using Spry to retrieve data from a SOAP webservice (received as XML). I want to display these results in modal Dialog using the jquery dialog plugin. I have an almost working solution, but the dialog shows the spry placeholders (i.e. the fieldnames surrounded by {}), not the actual retrieved data. Any ideas how I might achieve what I want?

• Rewarding iOS app beta testers with in app purchase?

  My iOS app is going to be free, but with additional functionality enabled via in app purchase. Currently beta testers are doing a great job finding bugs and I want to reward them for their hard work. I think the least I can do is give them a full version of the app so that they don't have to buy the functionality themselves. However, I'm not sure what the best way to do this is. There do not appear to be promo codes for in app purchase so I can't just email out promo codes. I have all the tester device UDIDs so when the app launches I could grab the device UDID and compare it to an internal list of 'approved' UDIDs. Is this what other developers do? My concerns: The in app purchase content would not be tied to their iTunes account, so if beta testers move to a new device they would not be able to enable the content unless I released a new build in the app store with their new UDID. So they may have to buy it eventually anyway. Having an internal list leaves a hole for hackers to modify the list and add themselves to it. What would you do?

  I am using the jQuery sortable() feature to re-order a list of items. After an item is drug to a new location, I kick off an AJAX form post to the server to save the new order. How can I undo the sort (e.g. return the drug item to its original position in the list) if I receive an error message from the server? Basically, I only want the re-order to "stick" if the server confirms that the changes were saved.

It would be one thing to test that the class has the attribute but this would not actually test that the logic inside it. This is what I want to test. • Emulating Test::More::done_testing - what is the most idiomatic way?

  I have to build unit tests for in environment with a very old version of Test::More (perl5.8 with $Test::More::VERSION being '0.80') which predates the addition of done_testing(). Upgrading to newer Test::More is out of the question for practical reasons. And I am trying to avoid using no_tests - it's generally a bad idea not catching when your unit test dies prematurely. What is the most idiomatic way of running a configurable amount of tests, assuming no no_tests or done_testing() is used? Details: My unit tests usually take the form of: use Test::More; my @test_set = ( [ "Test #1", $param1, $param2, ... ] ,[ "Test #1", $param1, $param2, ... ] # ,... ); foreach my $test (@test_set) { run_test($test); } sub run_test { # $expected_tests += count_tests($test); ok(test1($test)) || diag("Test1 failed"); # ... } The standard approach of use Test::More tests => 23; or BEGIN {plan tests => 23} does not work since both are obviously executed before @tests is known. My current approach involves making @tests global and defining it in the BEGIN {} block as follows: use Test::More; BEGIN { our @test_set = (); # Same set of tests as above my $expected_tests = 0; foreach my $test (@tests) { my $expected_tests += count_tests($test); } plan tests = $expected_tests; } our @test_set; # Must do!!! Unfortunately the tool quoted in the above article (testdox) is Java based. Is there one for .NET? Sounds like this would be something pretty simple to write, but I simply don't have the bandwidth and want to use something already written.

• Code promotion: Enforcing the rules

  So here is our problem: We have a small team of developers with their own ways of doing things-- I am trying to formalize a process in which we are required to promote our code in the following order: Local sandbox Dev UAT Staging Live Developers develop/test as they go on their own sandbox, Dev is its own box that we would use for continuous integration, UAT is another site in IIS on the dev box, which uses our dev database. We then promote to staging, which is a site in IIS on the Live box and using live data (just like the live, hence staging). Then, finally, we promote to live. Here are a few of my questions: 1.) Does this seem to be best practice? If not, what needs to be done differently? 2.) How do I enforce the rules to the developers? Often developers skip steps in order to save time... this should not be tolerated and would be great if it could be physically enforced. 3.) How do I enforce these rules to the business group? The business group just wants to get features out FAST. Do we promote only on certain days? Thanks! Josh

  I want to add a $ symbol before a users entry into a text field without actually submitting the $ when the user clicks submit. Additionally, I need to prohibit the user from entering anything but numerical values in to the text input. I know about the JQuery input mask (http://www.conetrees.com/2009/03/blog/jquery-masked-input-plugin-increase-usability-for-masked-format-input-fields) but this plugin requires you to set the exact number of digits/letters that the user is supposed to enter, which is no good for my current project. Can anyone think of a way to accomplish what I have described above?

  JQUERY, div with a fixed height (with a scrollbar) how to animate until it grows to no longer need a scroll bar? I have a div on a page with a CSS height:200px setting, which makes the DIV have a vertical scroll bar, which allows the user to scroll through a bunch of text. I would like to animate the DIV to expand in height until all content in the div is shown, meaning no more scroll bar I tried the following: $("#view-container").animate({"height": "auto"}, "slow"); but that didn't work while this does: $("#view-container").animate({"height": "1000px"}, "slow"); problem with that is the text size in the DIV is variable. Ideas? Thanks
