• Silverlight 4 OOB application access HTML DOM of the page in WebBrowser control

  Does anybody know if it is possible to access and manipulate an element in the html page that is rendered by the Silverlight 4 WebBrowser control. The scenario is like this. The user launches a Silverlight OOB application with elevated trust. The user manipulates some data in the application but must submit part of the data to an external web site. If I open the external site in a WebBrowser control, is there any way I can assist the user by pre filling some information in the external sites' web form via programmatic access to the DOM?

• Data Web Controls Enhancements in ASP.NET 4.0

  Traditionally, developers using Web controls enjoyed increased productivity but at the cost of control over the rendered markup. For instance, many ASP.NET controls automatically wrap their content in <table> for layout or styling purposes. This behavior runs counter to the web standards that have evolved over the past several years, which favor cleaner, terser HTML; sparing use of tables; and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for layout and styling. Furthermore, the <table> elements and other automatically-added content makes it harder to both style the Web controls using CSS and to work with the controls from client-side script. One of the aims of ASP.NET version 4.0 is to give Web Form developers greater control over the markup rendered by Web controls.   I have two elements on my Windows Forms application: Webbrowser-Control Button Inside of the webbrowser-control I show a very simple html-form with two input type=text. I press the button and get access to both text fields. • Disable cache in Silverlight HttpWebRequest

  My Silverlight4 app is hosted in ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I do web request through HttpWebRequest class but it gives back a result previously cached. How to disable this caching behavior? There are some links which talks about HttpWebRequest in .NET but Silverlight HttpWebrequest is different. Someone suggested to add unique dummy query string on every web request, but I'd prefer more elegant solution. I also tried the following, but it didn't work: _myHttpWebRequest.BeginGetRequestStream(new AsyncCallback(BeginRequest), new Guid()); In fact, by setting browser history settings it is possible to disable caching. • Does SmtpClient class represent POP3 client or…?

  I assume that web controls (such as the PasswordRecovery control) use SmtpClient to send email messages. If so, does SmtpClient represent a POP3 client or does SmtpClient forward email message to POP3 client? Do attributes specified inside <smtp> element in web.config map to SmtpClient class? <system.net> <mailSettings> <smtp deliveryMethod="Network" ...></smtp> </mailSettings> </system.net> One of the possible values for the attribute deliveryMethod is Network, which tells that email should be sent through the network to an SMTP server. In other words, this value tells to send email to SMTP server using SMTP protocol?! For the PasswordRecovery control to be able to send email messages, we need to set basic properties in <MailDefinition> subelement of the PasswordRecovery control. Thus I assume MailDefinition is used by controls to create an email message?!

• AutoMapper a viable alternative to two way databinding using a FormView?

  I've started using the FormView control to enable two way databinding in asp.net webforms. I liked that it saved me the trouble of writing loadForm and unloadForm routines on every page. So it seemed to work nicely at the start when I was just using textboxes everywhere....but when it came time to start converting some to DropDownLists, all hell broke lose. For example, see: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2435185/not-possible-to-load-dropdownlist-on-formview-from-code-behind ....and I had many additional problems after that. So I happened upon an article on AutoMapper, which I know very little about yet, but from the sounds of it, this might be a viable alternative to two-way databinding a form to an domain entity object? From what I understand, AutoMapper basically operates on naming convention, so, it will look for matched names properties(?) on the source and destination objects. So, basically, I have all my domain entities (ie: Person) with properties (FirstName, LastName, Address, etc)....what I would like to be able to do is declare my asp controls with those exact same names, and have automapper do the loading and unloading. One obvious caveat is that AutoMapper would have to know the proper property name for each control type, ie: Person.FirstName -- form.FirstName*.Text* Person.Country -- form.Country.SelectedValue Person.IsVerified -- form.IsVerified.Checked ....so it would have to have the smarts to find the control on the form, determine its type, and then load/unload between the domain object and the webform control into the proper property of the control. So if this worked, a person could just get rid of the cursed FormView control entirely, and it would be just one line of code each for binding and unbinding a webform. Possible?

• ASPXAUTH cookie is not being saved.

  Hi, Im working on a web project in ASP .NET MVC 2. In this project we store some info inside an ecripted cookie (the ASPXAUTH cookie) to avoid the need to query the db for every request. The thing is the code for this part has suddenly stopped working. I reviewed the changes made to the code on the source control server for anything that could be causing it, I found nothing. I even reverted to a known working copy (working on some other persons PC, same code, etc) but after debugging, it seems the .ASPXAUTH cookie is not getting saved anymore. Instead the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie is being set... (wich before wasn't) I changed the web.config file to turn off the sessionState. This eliminated the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie from being set, but it is still not saving the auth cookie. Ive recently installed some Microsoft Windows XP Updates, but the other person (whos PC runs the application just fine) also did. After googling, some info i found pointed out to a problem with the expiration date of the cookie. Ether cus the pc didnt have the right time/date (this was not the case) and others cus of the cookie expiration date being wrongly set. (I checked and it is being set correctly)... The problem persists with other browsers besides the one im using (Chrome) i tried it with IE6. Any ideas on why this is happening? Ill continue to post any helpful information i can find. • Best Practices for Source Control Dependencies

  How do you handle source control setup of a project that has dependency on a separate framework or library? For example, Project A uses Framework B. Should Project A also include the code from Framework B in its repository? Is there a way for it to be included automatically from a different repository or would I have to updated it manually? What are the general approaches are usually taken for this scenario? Assume that I control the repositories for both Project A and Framework B and that the source code for both is not compiled. Any resources or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using Subversion (on a very basic level), but I would like to switch to Mercurial so that I can try out Kiln with Fogbugz. Edit: In Mercurial, would you use parent repositories for this function?

• Extending a DropDownList control

  I have a rather large application that has literally a hundred DDLs with Yes / No ListItems. In an attempt to same myself some time, I created a Custom Control that extends the standard DDL. It all seems to work fine but I am having some issues when assigning the SelectedValue property in code where the selected value does not seem to have an affect on the control. I wonder if I should be adding my items during Init or PagePreLoad? Should I be calling base.OnInit before or after I add the list items? This mostly works but not 100%. • How to programmatically answer "Yes" to WebBrowser control security alert

  I am using WebBrowser control to programmatically access a single website, but whenever I login, I receive this certificate security alert: Since I trust that website and since I need to programmatically automate the login as well, this dialog box gets in the way. I searched SO for a solution and found a question similar to mine, but the accepted answer does not work! I defined a static member in the form that contains the WebControl: public static bool ValidateServerCertificate(object sender, X509Certificate certificate, X509Chain chain, SslPolicyErrors sslPolicyErrors) { return true; } In my form's constructor I added: ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = new RemoteCertificateValidationCallback(ValidateServerCertificate); But that didn't get rid of the certificate security alert. Is there any way to get rid of this warning? Is there an IE equivalent to Firefox's Add Security Exception??? Note: The owner's certificate works perfectly fine (without exhibiting this security alert) with standalone browsers (IE, FF, Chrome, Safari). It only exhibits the problem with the WebBroswer control.

• A control that contains multiple duplicate properties causing deadlock issues on IIS

  I am trying to work out if the above case is true for our site. I've been told by my hosting provider that this fix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974165) has to applied to our server due to performance issues. It basically describes an issues where UI code like: <asp:gridview id="GridView1" runat="server" ... PageSize="100" PagerSettings-Mode="Numeric" PagerStyle-BorderStyle="None" PagerStyle-BorderColor="Navy" PagerStyle-HorizontalAlign="Right" PagerSettings-PageButtonCount="2" PagerSettings-Position="Bottom"> <PagerStyle HorizontalAlign="Left" BorderColor="Navy" BorderStyle="None"></PagerStyle> ... <PagerSettings PageButtonCount="2"></PagerSettings> ... </asp:gridview> causing the following warning on the server "ISAPI 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'." Does anybody know of a way that I can detect this issue in the build process or the debugger? Any help would be much appreciate.

• Source Control icons have disappeared in Visual Studio 2010

  Today I installed Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate - RTM. One item that I noticed that is different is that files listed in the Solution Explorer window not longer display the source control icons beside each file (the lock, unlocked, plus sign for new files, etc.). Is there a setting that I am overlooking to display these icons? I have setup Visual Studio 2010 to use my source control client correctly (SourceGear Vault), and it does appear to be working OK -- I'm just used to seeing the little icons by each file. Anyone out there experiencing this problem? Is there something I can do to get the icons back?

  I have a master page which references a style in the following manner: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Content/Style.css" /> All my pages inherit from this master page. And this works well when the URL is http://www.domain.com/home/details/5, however the URL is http://www.domain.com/home/create, then, of course, Style.css cannot be found because `../../Content/Style.css' resolves to a directory one higher where there is nothing there. How is this typically handled?

  I am writing a bit of code to add a link tag to the head tag in the code behind... i.e. HtmlGenericControl css = new HtmlGenericControl("link"); css.Attributes["rel"] = "Stylesheet"; css.Attributes["type"] = "text/css"; css.Attributes["href"] = String.Format("/Assets/CSS/{0}", cssFile); to try and achieve something like... <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/CSS/Blah.css" /> I am using the HtmlGenericControl to achieve this... the issue I am having is that the control ultimatly gets rendered as... <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/CSS/Blah.css"></link> I cant seem to find what I am missing to not render the additional </link>, I assumed it should be a property on the object. Am I missing something or is this just not possible with this control? Thanks

  I know all the data source controls like LinqDataSource, ObjectDataSource etc. They are cool but they are intended to be used in conjunction with a database. I actually need a simple data source control that can work with a plain old List (That supports delete, update, select, insert ofcourse). I was thinking of using the objectdatasource but the select, update... methods are not present in the List. So is there such a control or do i have to roll my own? Should i inherit from the objectdatasource?

• Simple Preferred time control using silverlight 3.

  Here I am going to show you a simple preferred time control, where you can select the day of the week and the time of the day. This can be used in lots of place where you may need to display the users preferred times. Sample screenshot is attached below. This control is developed using Silverlight 3 and VS2008, I am also attaching the source code with this post. This is a very basic example. You can download and customize if further for your requirement if you want. I am trying to explain in few words how this control works and what are the different ways in which you can customize it further. File: PreferredTimeControl.xaml, in this file I have just hardcoded the controls and their positions which you can see in the screenshot above. In this example, to change the start day of the week and time, you will have to go and change the design in XAML file, its not controlled by your properties or implementation classes. You can also customize it to change the start day of the week, Language, Display format, styles, etc, etc. File: PreferredTimeControl.xaml.cs, In this control using the code below, first I am taking all the checkbox from my form and store it in the Global Variable, which I can use across my page. So if I want to represent Morning-Monday I will have to represent it as 11, Afternoon-Tuesday as 22, Morning-Wednesday as 13, etc. And in the other way to set the values in the control I am passing the values in the control in the same format as preferredTimeControl.SetAvailibility("11,12,13,16,23,22"); So this will set the checkbox value for Morning-Monday, Morning-Tuesday, Morning-Wednesday, Morning-Saturday, Afternoon of Tuesday and Afternoon of Wednesday. To implement this control, first I have to import this control in xmlns namespace as xmlns:controls="clr-namespace:PreferredTimeControlApp" and finally put in your page wherever you want, <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Style="{StaticResource LayoutRootGridStyle}"> <Border x:Name="ContentBorder" Style="{StaticResource ContentBorderStyle}"> <controls:PreferredTimeControl x:Name="preferredTimeControl"></controls:PreferredTimeControl> </Border> </Grid> And in the code behind you can just include this code: private void InitializeControl() { preferredTimeControl.SetAvailibility("11,12,13,16,23,22"); } And you are ready to go. For more details you can refer to my code attached. I know there can be even simpler and better way to do this. Let me know if any other ideas. Sorry, Guys Still I have used Silverlight 3 and VS2008, as from the system I am uploading this is still not upgraded, but still you can use the same code with Silverlight 4 and VS2010 without any changes. • ASP .NET Login Session How to destroy session object when logging out from Home Page??

  I have created a website. I login with username and password and after authenticating i redirect the user to Home Page. When the user clicks Logout, they are redirected to the Login Page. But after this when i click the BACK button on the browser, it again goes back to the Home Page with that user's login credentials. I have used Session["username"]=null in the Page_Load function of Home Page. How to avoid going back to the Home Page when the BACK button is clicked by the User??
