• HP UX can not boot from Ignite Tape

  We have hp rp2470 server running hp-ux 11.00, with LVM mirroring. As for redundancy we have second rp2470 same hw (same two processors, same ram, same two hdd’s, same number of lan cards). I want to clone first one to the second. For that purpose I am making ignite tape with the following command: make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 Ignite tape finishes without problems. When I boot second server from this ignate tape, server is starting to boot, and ignite restore finishes without any errors, only few notes, which are normal. However vmunix is not booting and when restore finishes, it boot to ISL prompt. From this I cannot boot /stand/vmunix. I tried to run recovery shell but no success. When recovery shell ask to do frecover to restore critical files, then I receive error: frecover(5405): unable to open /dev/rmt/0m At first I thought that the problem might be in the difference of the firmware version of the servers: fw version of production server is: Firmware Version 43.50 and fw version of backup server is: Firmware Version 42.19 So i did a fw upgrade of my backup server so that both servers are v43.50, and tried a recovery but again cant boot the system. Next I did another archive tape with -I (Interactive) flag: make_tape_recovery -I -x inc_entire=vg00 and tried recovery with it, again no good. I cannot find any error or warnings on ignite log, and I cannot boot hpux. I am only on ISL prompt. • Intermittent NFS lockups on Isilon cluster

  We have an Isilon cluster with 8 IQ 12000x nodes which exports storage via several NFS shares for a handful of Linux and Solaris clients. There is a Linux system that has one of these NFS filesystems mounted. I/O to this filesystem is moderately heavy from the Linux system. Every 3-4 weeks (it's not on any kind of discernible schedule, and sometimes is more/less frequent than this), we notice that all activity ceases on this NFS mount (the process hangs, as if the network stopped working so process is stuck in uninterruptible sleep) - 30 minutes later, the share recovers and things continue to work normally. I'm also not aware of any network related issues or maintenance that would cause this. All of the lockups last almost exactly 30 minutes per the kernel logs. Perhaps someone has some suggestions I could try? (I considered a soft mount to avoid the problems associated with processes accessing the filesystem hanging; however am wary of the corruption that could result and it would not really solve the underlying issue anyway).

• Why does my hackintosh freeze coming out of sleep?

  I put OSx 10.1 on a Dell Mini 10v and everytime it goes to sleep, it either will not emerge from the sleep or if it does it's frozen. Is there something that I should be doing that I'm not? I went into the boot settings and it's set to load off of the Hard Disk drive and not the USB.

• FAT32: setting a mixed-case volume label on Windows?

  When I try to set the volume label for my FAT32 USB drive the normal way (using Windows Explorer or Disk Management), the filesystem just makes the label uppercase when applying it. Is it possible at all to set a mixed-case volume label on the drive on Windows? I know there may be no real reason for me to do that, but I'd really like to know.

  I run check disk pretty regularly on my hard drive, and lately it's been saying that I have some bad sectores (66, to be exact). I've run smartctl and HD Tune. Both tell me that I have bad sectors and the drive is in "pre-fail" stage. The drive is only a couple of years old. How worried should I be? My drive is a FUJITSU MHW2160BJ FFS G2

  I've got a sizeable Solr server which is chewing a pile of disk. Whilst it is indexing a large amount of data, I'm wondering if there's any operation that will reduce the size of the index, by say dropping deleted-but-still-allocated data in a similar manner to a VACUUM FULL in PostgreSQL, or are the solr indexes kept fairly tidy, and my only option is to just allocate a pile more diskspace?

  I have windows 7 and my disc drive has a capacity of 120 GB. From one day to another it tells me that my disc C is full in a red bar but I dont have many programs installed. I deleted all of my videos, games, music, pictures, etc and I was able to free up 30 GB. I ran the disk cleaner and emptied the TEMP folder and garbage can but it still shows a 70GB used. Can I get some help from the experts PLEASE!!!

During the progress ITSELF, can I create a file ssytem partition say ext2 on md0 device like: mkfs.ext2 /dev/md0. Actually I am able to create this and want to confirm whether doing this before 100% completion of md device creation is CORRECT?

• Ubuntu says FAT16, windows says NTF?

  I created a partition on USB harddisk in windows and it reports to be an NTFS partition. Yet in ubuntu 9.10 fdisk says it a FAT16 partition. If I mount with -t ntfs I see nothing, but if I mount without it I see all the files. Can anyone tell me whats going on here? Windows computer disk management definately says its NTFS, and a quick look at the raw data suggests it is NTFS, as I know the FAT16 very well.

• Shrinking a large transaction log on a full drive

  Someone fired off an update statement as part of some maintenance which did a cross join update on two tables with 200,000 records in each. That's 40 trillion statements, which would explain part of how the log grew to 200GB. I also did not have the log file capped, which is another problem I will be taking care of server wide - where we have almost 200 databases residing. The 'solution' I used was to backup the database, backup the log with truncate_only, and then backup the database again. I then shrunk the log file and set a cap on the log. Seeing as there were other databases using the log drive, I was in a bit of a rush to clean it out. I might have been able to back the log file up to our backup drive, hoping that no other databases needed to grow their log file. Paul Randal from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.02.logging.aspx Under no circumstances should you delete the transaction log, try to rebuild it using undocumented commands, or simply truncate it using the NO_LOG or TRUNCATE_ONLY options of BACKUP LOG (which have been removed in SQL Server 2008). These options will either cause transactional inconsistency (and more than likely corruption) or remove the possibility of being able to properly recover the database. Were there any other options I'm not aware of?

• Fix Linux-made png file for use on Windows

  There is a particular icon library that I really like. Now, I have downloaded the package that has the png files inside (I know the ico files are there, but I want the png files). However, about my Windows 7 computer tells me that about 1/3 of the png files are corrupt. I usually use XnView to view the files, and it won't display the "corrupt" files. I've tried other editors and viewers and I get the same issue. Now, the png package was originally designed for Linux to be an OS-icon-package for the entire system, so I figure the png files were built in Linux. So, is there a way I can "fix" the "corrupted" png files for my Windows 7 computer? Maybe when the files were created there was some bit that was off-colour or something? Any clues? [edit] I have read in this thread that the "corruption" could happen during the extraction process. I did all the extraction with 7-zip. It was a zip containing a tar. I will try another extractor, but I don't think it will make any difference.

• Testing Firewire 800 port on MacBook Pro

I haven't received any errors from my machine, and don't see anything related to the Firewire port in the logs.   My system hard drive on my Windows computer is partitioned into 3 primary partitions, and 200+GB additional free space. The partitions are contiguous: C: 20GB D: 25GB E: 208GB free: 212GB I'd like to expand the E: partition, but in the Windows Disk Management GUI, the Extend Volume context-menu option is grayed out and unselectable (screenshot link): Why won't Windows let me expand this partition?
