• Creating a bare bone web-browser: After the html parser, javascript parser, etc have done their work, how do I display the content of the webpage?

  This is a personal project to learn computer programming. I took a look at this: https://www.udacity.com/course/viewer#!/c-cs262 The following is the approach taken in it: Abstract Syntax Tree is created. But javascript is still not completely broken down in order not to confuse with the html tags. Then the javascript interpreter is called on it. Javascript interpreter stores the text from the write() and document.write() to be used later. Then a graphics library in Python is called which will convert everything to a pdf file and then we convert it into png or jpeg and then display it. My Question: I want to display the actual text in a window (which I will design later) like firefox or chrome does instead of image files so that the data can be selected, copied, etc by the user of the browser. How do I accomplish this? In other words, what are the other elements of a bare bone web browser that I am missing? I would prefer to implement most of the stuff in C++ although if things seem too complicated I might go with Python to save time and create a prototype and later creating another bare bone browser in C++ and add more features. This is a project to learn more. I do realize we already have lots of reliable browsers like firefox, etc. The way I feel it is done: I think after all the broken down contents have been created by the parsers and interpreters, I will need to access them individually from within the window's code (like qt) and then decide upon a good way to display them. Go back to step 3 and repeat for each resource. 16. Stylesheets are parsed, and the rendering information in each gets attached to the matching node in the DOM tree 17. Javascript is parsed and executed, and DOM nodes are moved and style information is updated accordingly 18. The browser renders the page on the screen according to the DOM tree and the style information for each node 19. You see the page on the screen I need help with step 18. How do I do that? How much work do Webkit and Gecko do? I want to use a readymade layout renderer for step number 18 and not for anything that comes before that.

• Cannot install gnome shell extensions

  I upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04, install gnome 3 and remove unity. My gnome version is 3.4.1. The GNOME Shell extensions is installed and enabled. When I use firefox to visit each extension page in https://extensions.gnome.org/, for example, https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5/alternative-status-menu/, there is no where to install the extensions. I am told that one can install extensions by visite these extension pages. This is the guide I followed.

• Schedule Auto Send & Receive in Microsoft Outlook

  If you use Outlook as your email client, you might want to schedule how often it checks for new messages. Today we show you how to schedule how often auto send/receive occurs. If you’re busy during the day and need to keep up with your emails, you might want want Outlook to check for new messages every few minutes. Here we’ll show how to schedule it in Office 2010, 2007, and 2003 for a busy inbox where you want to keep on top of your important emails. Outlook 2010 To schedule Auto Send/Receive in Outlook 2010, click on the File tab then Options. The Outlook Options window opens…click on Advanced and scroll down to Send and receive and click on the Send/Receive button. In the Send/Receive Groups window under Setting for group “All Accounts” check the box Schedule an automatic send/receive every…minutes. It is set to 30 minutes by default and you can change the minutes to whatever you want it to be. If you’re busy and want to keep up with your messages you can go as low as every one minute. You can also get to the Send/Receive groups by selecting Send/Receive tab on the Ribbon and then Define Send/Receive Groups. Outlook 2007 To select the send/receive time intervals in Outlook 2007, open Outlook and click on Tools \ Options. Click on the Mail Setup tab, check the box next to Send immediately when connected then the Send/Receive button.   Now change the schedule to automatically send/receive. You can also access the Send/Receive Groups section by going to Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings and Define Send/Receive Groups. Outlook 2003 In Outlook 2003 click on Tool \ Options… Click on the Mail Setup tab then check Send immediately when connected, then the Send/receive button. Then set the amount of time between send/receive attempts. If you live out of Microsoft Outlook and want to keep up with messages, setting the automatic send/receive minutes will keep you up to date.   So the question is what is the point of passing a reference type along with the ref keyword? I have an Employee class as below: 1: public class Employee 2: { 3: public string FirstName { get; set; } 4: public string LastName { get; set; } 5:  6: public override string ToString() 7: { 8: return string.Format("{0}-{1}", FirstName, LastName); 9: } 10: } In my calling class, I say: 1: class Program 2: { 3: static void Main() 4: { 5: Employee employee = new Employee 6: { 7: FirstName = "John", 8: LastName = "Doe" 9: }; 10: Console.WriteLine(employee); 11: CallSomeMethod(employee); 12: Console.WriteLine(employee); 13: } 14:  15: private static void CallSomeMethod(Employee employee) 16: { 17: employee.FirstName = "Smith"; 18: employee.LastName = "Doe"; 19: } 20: }   After having a look at the code, you’ll probably say, Well, an instance of a class gets passed as a reference, so any changes to the instance inside the CallSomeMethod, actually modifies the original object. Hence the output will be ‘John-Doe’ on the first call and ‘Smith-Doe’ on the second. The output tells me that the original instance of the Employee class does not change. Huh? But an instance of a class gets passed by reference, so why did the values not change on the original instance or how do I keep the two instances in-sync all the times? Aah, now here’s the answer. In order to keep the objects in sync, you pass them using the ‘ref’ keyword. 1: class Program 2: { 3: static void Main() 4: { 5: Employee employee = new Employee 6: { 7: FirstName = "John", 8: LastName = "Doe" 9: }; 10: Console.WriteLine(employee); 11: CallSomeMethod(ref employee); 12: Console.WriteLine(employee); 13: } 14:  15: private static void CallSomeMethod(ref Employee employee) 16: { 17: employee = new Employee 18: { 19: FirstName = "Smith", 20: LastName = "John" 21: }; 22: } 23: } Viola! Now, to prove it beyond doubt, I said, let me try with another reference type: string. 1: class Program 2: { 3: static void Main() 4: { 5: string name = "abc"; 6: Console.WriteLine(name); 7: CallSomeMethod(ref name); 8: Console.WriteLine(name); 9: } 10:  11: private static void CallSomeMethod(ref string name) 12: { 13: name = "def"; 14: } 15: } The output was as expected, first ‘abc’ and then ‘def’ - proves the 'ref' keyword works here as well. Now, what if I remove the ‘ref’ keyword? The output should still be the same as the above right, since string is a reference type? 1: class Program 2: { 3: static void Main() 4: { 5: string name = "abc"; 6: Console.WriteLine(name); 7: CallSomeMethod(name); 8: Console.WriteLine(name); 9: } 10:  11: private static void CallSomeMethod(string name) 12: { 13: name = "def"; 14: } 15: } Wrong, the output shows ‘abc’ printed twice. Wait a minute… now how could this be? This is because string is an immutable type. This means that any time you modify an instance of string, new memory address is allocated to the instance. The effect is similar to ‘new’ing up the Employee instance inside the CallSomeMethod in the absence of the ‘ref’ keyword. Verdict: ref key came to the rescue and saved the planet… again!

• 13.10 - Weird WiFi connection problems - WMP300N - Broadcom BCM4321

  Just installed 13.10 on my desktop and I really like it. After having problems with getting the wifi to work, I installed it connected to the internet with an ethernet cable and added in the 3rd party software and updates as per the installation procedure. After installation was completed, I saw the wifi icon in the upper right hand corner, but it was not seeing any wifi networks. Some Googling brought me to use the 'Additional Drivers' application. It found the WMP300N Broadcom BDM4321 based pci wifi card and installed the proprietary Broadcom STA wireless driver, which may have been installed before. I'm not sure. Here is the weird part: when I start my system, wifi seems to be in some sort of suspended state where the system sees that the card exists but the card will not detect any wifi networks. It will work after booting once I 'Additional Drivers' application and then start FireFox. I know it seems weird, but this is the process I've got down to get the card to recognize wifi networks. After those applications are open for a few seconds, the card starts to function like normal (although maintaining the wifi connection is problem but most likely a seperate issue). The reason this is a problem is because this is supposed to just be a headless box managed through SSH. Here are the readouts from the common network diagnosis programs BEFORE I open 'Additional Drivers' and 'FireFox'. • I've filed an ITP bug on bugs.debian.org - now how do I get the package into Ubuntu?

  I've written a development library that I would like to include in the Ubuntu archives. From what I understand, the best way to do this is to first get the package into Debian and then request a package sync. Here is the ITP bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=691467 Now my question is simply... what do I do now? Looking at this page, I see horrifying things like "419 days in preparation" and "last activity 404 days ago". I get the impression that getting a package into Debian is a slow process. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I've tried to do as much work as I can to smooth out the process - I've got a branch with Debian packaging (which gets by Lintian without any errors).

• Shutdown Hangs for 5 Minutes on Kubuntu 14.04

  I've had persistent problems with a 5 minute hang at shutdown for the last three versions of Kubuntu (13.04, 13.10, and now 14.04). I suspect this is not a KDE-specific problem. Recently, I performed a fresh installation of Kubuntu 14.04 from a live-USB, and shutdown worked normally for about a week. The hang-up is now happening again, and I can't figure out why. A brief description of the problem: The hang-up occurs with all methods of initiating a normal shutdown: Clicking the shutdown or restart button in KDE, sudo shutdown -h now, sudo reboot The shutdown splash screen appears. Using the down-arrow to access verbose messages, I see "Asking all remaining processes to terminate." This message remains for 5 minutes with no disk activity. Finally, a rapid series of messages flurries to the screen: * All processes ended within 300 seconds... [ OK ] nm-dispatcher.action: Caught signal 15, shutting down... ModemManager[852]: <warn> Could not acquire the 'org.freedesktop.ModemManager1' service name ModemManager[852]: <info> ModemManager is shut down * Deactivating swap... [ OK ] * Unmounting local filesystems... [ OK ] * Will now restart` Possible Sources of the Problem: Before the problem re-appeared, I have mainly been doing routine computing. I have kept the system up-to-date using apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade. The only other notable incident was a power failure. I do not have the computer connected to a UPS, so the power failure resulted in an immediate shutdown. Could this have corrupted an important file which must be accessed at shutdown? Is there any way that could cause a 5-minute hang-up? • Control Sysinternals Suite & NirSoft Utilities with a Single Interface

  Sysinternals and NirSoft both provide helpful utilities for your Windows system but may not be very convenient to access. Using the Windows System Control Center you can easily access everything through a single UI front end. Setup The first thing to do is set up three new folders in Program Files (or Program Files (x86) if you are using a 64bit system) with the following names (the first two need to exactly match what is shown here): Sysinternals Suite NirSoft Utilities (create this folder only if you have any of these apps downloaded) Windows System Control Center (or WSCC depending on your preferences) Unzip the contents of the Sysinternals Suite into its’ folder. Then unzip any individual NirSoft Utilities programs that you have downloaded into the NirSoft folder. All that is left to do is to unzip the WSCC software into its’ folder and create a shortcut. WSCC in Action When you start WSCC up for the first time you will see the following message with a brief explanation about the software. Next the options window will appear providing you an opportunity to look around and make any desired changes. WSCC can access utilities for both suites using a live connection if needed (utilities accessed live are not downloaded). Note: This occurs on the first run only. This is the main WSCC window…you can choose the utility that you want to use by sorting through an all items list or based on category. Note: WSCC may occasionally experience a problem downloading a particular utility if using the live service. We conducted a quick test by accessing two Sysinternals apps. First PsInfo… Followed by DiskView. Both opened quickly and were ready to go. There were no NirSoft Utilities installed on our test system in order to provide a live access example. Within moments WSCC accessed the CurrProcess utility and had it running on our system. Our recommendation is to download your favorite utilities from both suites (in order to always have easy access to them). Conclusion WSCC provides an easy way to access all of the apps in the Sysinternals Suite and NirSoft Utilities in one place. Note: A PortableApps version is also available. • middle-click on Thunderbird icon in Unity Launcher gives window without titlebar or menubar

  I expect that this is a (low-priority) bug, but apport-bug strongly encouraged me to come here first, so here I am... What I did: I started Thunderbird and then minimized the window. I then middle-clicked on the Thunderbird icon in the Unity (3D) Launcher. I do not have any of the appmenu packages installed (not indicator-appmenu, nor any of the *-globalmenu or appmenu-* packages). What I expected: I would get the Thunderbird main window back at its original location, or possibly I'd get a Compose Mail window somewhere on the desktop. (This was something of an experiment, so I wasn't really sure what to expect.) What happens: The Thunderbird main window appears in the upper left corner of the display, displacing the Launcher. This was not its previous location. The window has no titlebar or menubar. The top panel says "Thunderbird Mail", but moving the mouse over that text does nothing (doesn't show the close/minimize/maximize controls). I can still bring up the Launcher and start applications. If I start Firefox and give it input focus, clicking on the Thunderbird window leaves the focus with Firefox. I can use the Switcher to give Thunderbird the input focus. (Both the Unity Switcher and the Static Application Switcher work. If I use the Static Application Switcher, I see Thunderbird's menubar in the top panel until I release Alt-tab.) I can kill Thunderbird from the Launcher. I can also use the Unity Switcher to minimize everything. If I then left-click on the Thunderbird icon in the Launcher, the Thunderbird main window reappears in the upper left. But this time it does not displace the Launcher, and it has the proper titlebar and menubar. This does not happen with Unity 2D. And I haven't seen it with any other app. I realize that because I've disabled the appmenu stuff, I'm not getting the full Unity experience, and there might be some rough edges. But this is a bug, yes?

  I had the chance to take the beta version of exam 71-516 today. Here are my thoughts on it: first, I was rather annoyed to discover that I will only know if I passed or not about 8 weeks after the beta period expires (July, 02), which probably means September. It was a difficult exam, especially since I don't have any practice on some of the new Entity Framework options. The items covered, from the most covered to the least covered, were: Entity Framework (50-50 for POCO/Non-POCO) LINQ to SQL WCF Data Services Classic ADO.NET (DataSets, DataTables, DataAdapters, TableAdapters, Connections and Commands LINQ to XML Sync Framework (surprise!) All added up, I think it was a difficult exam. My advise is that you practice a lot! I will post the result as soon as I know it.

• Has anyone used these database publish tools in Visual Studio 2012/2013 ?

  I am trying to figure out if they are actually useful... I have a DBProject and it would be nice if when I publish from my DEV to my TEST it what automatically copy the schema and data from DEV to TEST.. is that what this tab in visual studio is for ? On PROD I would never want to copy the data over but maybe I would change the schema and want to move that schema to PROD.. so is that what this tab is for ? For now we are using WEB DEPLOY but none of these database options.. We are manually using DATA COMPARE to sync changes on the various databases/DBproject... Any advice?

• Flashing screen during videos and games

  I recently switched from Vista to Ubuntu 12.10 on my HP laptop and I've been having issues with my graphics. Everything is fine till I watch a video/play a game or (sometimes) when I visit the software centre. At that point large portions of the screen start flashing and everything gets rather slow. I'm looking for a way to remedy this. For reference I'm using Firefox and I'm unsure what my video card is because it's listed as unknown when I check my system settings.

  At times it seems like dozens, if not hundreds of root-owned HTTP connections spring up. This is not much of a problem on LAN or WLAN as each of them seems to transfer very little, but if I use GPRS link, my ping times go into minutes (seriously, 80000ms is not infrequent!) and all connections grind to a halt waiting till these end. This usually lasts some 15 minutes and ends about when I start troubleshooting it for real. • Problem when attempting to put Ubuntu One in panel (12.04)

• Calculated Columns in Entity Framework Code First Migrations

  I had a couple people ask me about calculated properties / columns in Entity Framework this week.  The question was, is there a way to specify a property in my C# class that is the result of some calculation involving 2 properties of the same class.  For example, in my database, I store a FirstName and a LastName column and I would like a FullName property that is computed from the FirstName and LastName columns.  My initial answer was: 1: public string FullName 2: { 3: get { return string.Format("{0} {1}", FirstName, LastName); } 4: } Of course, this works fine, but this does not give us the ability to write queries using the FullName property.  For example, this query: 1: var users = context.Users.Where(u => u.FullName.Contains("anan")); Would result in the following NotSupportedException: The specified type member 'FullName' is not supported in LINQ to Entities. Only initializers, entity members, and entity navigation properties are supported. It turns out there is a way to support this type of behavior with Entity Framework Code First Migrations by making use of Computed Columns in SQL Server.  While there is no native support for computed columns in Code First Migrations, we can manually configure our migration to use computed columns. Let’s start by defining our C# classes and DbContext: 1: public class UserProfile 2: { 3: public int Id { get; set; } 4: 5: public string FirstName { get; set; } 6: public string LastName { get; set; } 7: 8: [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Computed)] 9: public string FullName { get; private set; } 10: } 11: 12: public class UserContext : DbContext 13: { 14: public DbSet<UserProfile> Users { get; set; } 15: } The DatabaseGenerated attribute is needed on our FullName property.  This is a hint to let Entity Framework Code First know that the database will be computing this property for us. Next, we need to run 2 commands in the Package Manager Console.  First, run Enable-Migrations to enable Code First Migrations for the UserContext.  Next, run Add-Migration Initial to create an initial migration.  This will create a migration that creates the UserProfile table with 3 columns: FirstName, LastName, and FullName.  This is where we need to make a small change.  Instead of allowing Code First Migrations to create the FullName property, we will manually add that column as a computed column. 1: public partial class Initial : DbMigration 2: { 3: public override void Up() 4: { 5: CreateTable( 6: "dbo.UserProfiles", 7: c => new 8: { 9: Id = c.Int(nullable: false, identity: true), 10: FirstName = c.String(), 11: LastName = c.String(), 12: //FullName = c.String(), 13: }) 14: .PrimaryKey(t => t.Id); 15: Sql("ALTER TABLE dbo.UserProfiles ADD FullName AS FirstName + ' ' + LastName"); 16: } 17: 18: 19: public override void Down() 20: { 21: DropTable("dbo.UserProfiles"); 22: } 23: } Finally, run the Update-Database command.  Now we can query for Users using the FullName property and that query will be executed on the database server.  However, we encounter another potential problem. Since the FullName property is calculated by the database, it will get out of sync on the object side as soon as we make a change to the FirstName or LastName property.  Luckily, we can have the best of both worlds here by also adding the calculation back to the getter on the FullName property: 1: [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Computed)] 2: public string FullName 3: { 4: get { return FirstName + " " + LastName; } 5: private set 6: { 7: //Just need this here to trick EF 8: } 9: } Now we can both query for Users using the FullName property and we also won’t need to worry about the FullName property being out of sync with the FirstName and LastName properties.  When we run this code: 1: using(UserContext context = new UserContext()) 2: { 3: UserProfile userProfile = new UserProfile {FirstName = "Chanandler", LastName = "Bong"}; 4: 5: Console.WriteLine("Before saving: " + userProfile.FullName); 6: 7: context.Users.Add(userProfile); 8: context.SaveChanges(); 9:  10: Console.WriteLine("After saving: " + userProfile.FullName); 11:  12: UserProfile chanandler = context.Users.First(u => u.FullName == "Chanandler Bong"); 13: Console.WriteLine("After reading: " + chanandler.FullName); 14:  15: chanandler.FirstName = "Chandler"; 16: chanandler.LastName = "Bing"; 17:  18: Console.WriteLine("After changing: " + chanandler.FullName); 19:  20: } We get this output: It took a bit of work, but finally Chandler’s TV Guide can be delivered to the right person. The obvious downside to this implementation is that the FullName calculation is duplicated in the database and in the UserProfile class.
