• Revamped Google Webmaster Tools

  With a positive surprise I realized today that Google's Webmaster Tools had some minor overhauling and provide some more details than before. Most obvious are the changes on the dashboard where the Top Search Queries now provide information about impressions and clicktroughs instead of the rankings before. Only the links of the search expressions are missing. It seems that the Top search queries were in the focus of this update. The section is now spiced with detailed graphs about what happened during selectable periods on your site. Well, seems that the Webmaster Tools mimic a stripped-down version of Google Analytics... I was very pleased by the details that are offered when you click on a single query term. Really nice to see the search rankings and your responsible URLs at the same time. Before, you had to put two browser instances side-by-side to achieve this kind of overview. Personally, I like the approach to visualize statistics the way Google or other providers do. It gives you a quick and informative overview, and enables you to dig further into details about peaks and lows on your visits, page impressions or clickthroughs.

• Script Task/Component and Template Information

  The Script Task and Script component are often used by people developing SSIS packages because they are easy to use and now because SSIS could be perceived to be more developer friendly they are very powerful. That being said we should no be using them everywhere.  There are generally Tasks/Components already provided that will do the job it may be that we have to rethink the way we want to draw our package. I had cause last week to break out the script component in SQL Server 2008 SP1 and found that it was broken.  I don’t know when it broke as I do not use them all that often.  My error was as below.     Something must have overwritten this template information.  I looked in Event Viewer and tried the things it suggested but the templates still did not work.  Here is how I got them eventually to work for me (Your Mileage may vary) Open up a Command Prompt window using an administrator level account and “as an administrator” vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask /setup vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent /setup   This worked for me.  Hope it helps.

• Bash script not adding variables to session

  I have a bash script that I have added as a startup application. It does a bunch of exports and alias assignment. #! /bin/bash alias devhm='cd ${DEV_HOME}; ll'; alias wlhm='cd ${WL_HOME}; ll'; alias dirch='watch --interval=1 "ls -la"'; alias vols='watch --interval=1 "df -h"'; alias svn-update='svn update --depth infinity ./*'; alias mci="~/mci.sh"; alias vncserver="vncserver -geometry 1680x1050"; alias ..="cd .."; alias hist="history | grep "; export PROXY_HOST=proxy.my.setup; export PROXY_PORT=3128; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH/usr/lib/oracle/12.1/client64/lib; export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/12.1/client64; export TNS_ADMIN=${ORACLE_HOME}/network/admin; echo "DONE!"; But none of these values are available in my terminal sessions anymore. Even when I run the script straight into the terminal like so: ./setup.sh I see the "DONE!" prompt printed but no aliases or env variables are set. If I copy and paste the contents of the file into the terminal the aliases and env variables are set. I have tried adding a line to execute the script from .bashrc also but still no aliases or env variables set. Any ideas what might be going on here? Also could anyone suggest a better way to have these env variables/aliases added to every terminal session?

• Crawling an ajax based page with both a hash fragment and a meta tag

  According to google's documentation on crawling ajax based web pages, if a url contains a hash fragment, or something at the end of an url that looks like #helloworld, and if there is an ! after the #, as in #!helloworld, google will then request the url url?_escaped_fragment_=helloworld. I currently have an ajax based webpage that I want google to be able to crawl. Sometimes, the page uses hash fragments, and for those situations I set up the server so it will return an html snapshot for that page using _escaped_fragment_. However, that webpage often does not load a hash fragment, and when that happens the webpage still loads content using ajax. I couldn't find a good solution to enable ajax crawling for pages that sometimes have a hash fragment and sometimes don't. How can I tell google to use _escaped_fragment_ when there is a hash fragment, and to use something else to get an html snapshot of a page when there isn't a hash fragment?

• korgac - init.d kill script on shutdown

  I'm new to Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux and my English is not the best, so I'm sorry for incorrect or stupid questions. I've installed KOrganizer and to start the reminder when I boot the system, I added the korgac command to the autostart. This works fine. But now, every time I want to reboot or shutdown my system, there appears a message that tells me that an unknown process is still running... so I have kill it manually before reboot/shutdown. I knew that it is the korgac process that causes this problem, so I decided to create an init.d script. I've created a script, put it into init.d, and created 2 symbolic links: to rc0.d and to rc6.d. The name starts with K10script... (I hope it is correct so). K10korgac_kill: #! /bin/sh pkill korgac exit 0 Unfortunately this wasn't able to resolve my problem. Maybe my script is wrong. • How can I run this script on startup, restart, and shutdown?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. I've written a script, that synchronises a directory in ~ with a directory on /dev/sda4, using Unison. Before, I had this script running every five minutes with no problems, using crontab. Right now, I want to execute this script at startup, restart and shutdown only. This is what the script looks like: #!/bin/bash unison -perms 0 -batch "/mnt/Data/Syncfolder/" "/home/myname/Syncfolder/" My crontab configuration was as follows: m h dom mon dow command 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * sh /usr/local/bin/s4lj.bash Note that I copied the script from ~ to /usr/local/bin/ first, to avoid root problems. I've read How to execute script on shutdown? and How to write an init script that will execute an existing start script?. After doing that, I've done this: I've made s4lj.bash executable, and then copied it to /etc/init.d/. For startup, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc2.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to S70s4lj.bash. For restart, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc6.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. For shutdown, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc0.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. Still, the script won't be run in any of these situations. How can I make the script get executed? I'd be happiest with a proper *.conf file in /etc/init. Thanks in advance.

• Allow user to SUDO a script without password.

  I have a php script with this: <?php #echo exec('whoami'); $output = shell_exec('bash /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live'); echo "$output"; ?> The make-live script contains this: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ echo "Head revision has been pushed to live server" So the PHP user who is www-data needs to have nopasswd for that script. I am told I need to add: www-data ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live To sudoers to allow this. First I run sudo visudo but I have no experience with vi so I try to open it in gedit with export EDITOR=gedit && sudo -E visudo which then just opens a sudoers.tmp file which is empty. I add the line and save it. But it doesn't do save. So I just try sudo visudo and I add the line right beneath this part: # User privilege specification root ALL=(ALL) ALL www-data ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/svn/bash_repo/make-live I closed out sudoers and reopened to verify that it has saved. I even restart apache. I run the php file and it still doesn't work. What am I missing?

• How to remove duplicate content, which is still indexed, but not linked to anymore?

  A bug in the tool, which we use to create search-engine-friendly URLs changed our whole URL-structure overnight, and we only noticed after Google already indexed the page. Now, we have a massive duplicate content issue, causing a harsh drop in rankings. Webmaster Tools shows over 1,000 duplicate title tags, so I don't think, Google understands what is going on. Right URL: abc.com/price/sharp-ah-l13-12000-btu.html Wrong URL: abc.com/item/sharp-l-series-ahl13-12000-btu.html (created by mistake) After that, we ... Changed back all URLs to the "Right URLs" Set up a 301-redirect for all "Wrong URLs" a few days later Now, still a massive amount of pages is in the index twice. As we do not link internally to the "Wrong URLs" anymore, I am not sure, if Google will re-crawl them very soon. What can we do to solve this issue and tell Google, that all the "Wrong URLs" now redirect to the "Right URLs"? Best, David

  For most people the default New Tab Page in Chrome works perfectly well for their purposes. But if you would prefer to choose what opens in a new tab for yourself then you will definitely want to have a look at the “Define your own new tab!” extension for Google Chrome. Before Unless you are using a Speed Dial (or similar) extension each time you click on the “New Tab Button” you get the same old page. It would certainly be a lot more satisfying if you could choose custom webpage(s) to open as new tabs. After Once you have the extension installed the best thing to do is click on the “New Tab Button”. That will open up the “Options Page” where you can enter one or two custom website URLs of your choosing. Once you have your custom URLs entered click on “Save”. As soon as you click on the “New Tab Button” your new custom webpage(s) will open. If you chose two webpages the first choice will open focused on the “right side” instead of the “left”. Clicking on the “Home Button” will also open the webpage(s) that you chose. The webpage(s) that you chose will also open as your starting “Home Pages” each time that you start your browser. In the meantime i discovered the double click service that had a good option to turn on google ads when you don't have any other running so i joined up for google adsense with my company account.   I have a script that's supposed to record a shoutcast stream for an hour, convert it to mp3, and then save it. The script runs correctly when I run it from the terminal, but I can't seem to get it to run in cron (where it should run every hour at the top of the hour). These two pages are showing in Google SERP when I checked cached posts of my blog. Is it possible to use canonical tag on the post www.example.com/post.html?showComment=1372054729698 so that Google won't penalize my original post? Is there any other ways to redirect a blog post?

That if all search results has encrypted with HTTPS protocol then how did Google analytics still able to track some of (20%) organic keywords details?   This is a really basic Google Analytics question. Apologies in advance if it's not appropriate here, but I've had a lot of luck on Stack Overflow and this seems like the best Stack Exchange site for a question like this. I'm trying to understand how Google Analytics goals work, or if they're the right feature to be using for my situation. Most of the documentation I find online refers to the old version of the UI, not the new one. I have a website, let's call is blog.example.com. This website drives traffic to an ecommerce store, let's call that store.example2.com. I want to get reports on which links from blog.example.com are being clicked through leading to store.example2.com. How do you do this in Google analytics? Are goals the right area to be looking? Do I setup the goals on store.example2.com or blog.example.com? Or both? Is there any canonical user guide (free or paid) that covers how this works? I'm a competent programmer, but it's years since I dealt with conversion tracking on any serious level, and we've progressed well beyond my frozen caveman pixel tracking knowledge. Thanks in advance

• Tools for game script / storyboard

  I am searching for a tool that will help in writing a game script. By "script" I mean the text core of a storyboard - without the drawing drafts, which may or may not be there (yet). What I'm thinking of will let write a piece of text of the script, define a simplified workflow from that step, and then define the text of next steps, and so on. Searching online, I found Inform http://inform7.com/ ("A Design System for Interactive Fiction Based on Natural Language") which in theory is exactly what I am searching for, but trying to use it it has this model of a space (a dungeon, a library) where you are picking up objects and exploring them. In my case I am designing more a Sims like game, the flow is entirely different. Considering non specific software, mind mapping tools miss the linearity of the process. What I am writing is a directed graph - simply a work-flow, but the way I want to design it is more text based than work-flow based. SO what I'm doing now is using a text editor, which I'll transform directly in code. Any suggestions?

• How can I create an SPF record on my 1and1.com hosted domain?

  Emails from my domain (hosted at 1and1, and using Google Apps Premier edition) have sporadically been going to recipients' spam folders lately. I did some research, tested, and found out that I do not have an SPF record for my domain. According to this Google Support page, I need to create one. Following the steps on that page is easy, until I get to #3: Create a TXT record containing this text: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all I see no way to create a "TXT record". Here is a screenshot of the admin panel:

• Does Submit to Index on a page with new content update Content Keywords for the site?

  Using Google Webmaster Tools I'm trying to update the Content Keywords of my site. I'm confused about the relationship between Submit to Index and Content Keywords Does Fetch as Google -- Submit to Index on a previously existing indexed page containing new content expidite updating the Content Keywords crawled by the real Google bot? Does Submit to Index only submit new URL's so that previously indexed URL's still point to the older cached version until Google crawls specifically for new content on its own? Does Submit to Index have anything to do with Content Keywords or crawling new content being a previously indexed page or never been indexed page?
