  • Problem installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run in 12.04

    I have a catch 22 problem in trying to install this driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run) to set my screen to its native resolution of 1280x1024 (hpL1906). Problem is that in order to install this driver, I need to stop the XServer but when I do this (sudo service lightdm stop), my screen goes blank and displays the message - Out of Range 1280X1024 need to reset (or something similar) - and I can go no further. So, I cannot install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run without stopping lightdm but when I do so, I can no longer see anything on the screen or go further to install the driver that would let me adjust the resolution. Any advice on getting out of this loop would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I determine the linux server software/version and email server software/version running

    I just inherited this a single linux box running pop/smtp for a small office (25 users). I'm new to Linux. I think the box is running Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 as the server (this is bannered accross the screen occassionally) but not sure of the release/kernal/build etc. I need to be certain of both the server os and email linux versions in order to perform research, admin and support. Any help/pointers on how to do this is much appreciated.

Having tried a few Linux Player over the past years i come to wonder, which Players you prefer and what kind of Players are out there, that you suggest are worth looking into and why!! I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but "Jamendo and Magnatune" plugin are both no longer available in 11.10 and also my covers are not shown, since i stream my music folder from a second partition. aTunes is another great Player, but there are also some flaws which i contacted the developers about.   • update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

    Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.

  • Global variable in a Linux shared library

    Suppose we have the following setup under Linux, .so library named "libcnt.so" and 3 user space apps: "app1", "app2", "app3". This library does 1 simple thing, it says to the app (app dynamically links the library at runtime) by how many apps it is already linked. Apps should have access to link counter. My knowledge in C and Linux is somewhat limited in this aspect, but as I understand this information should be stored in a global variable inside the shared object. Something like: in libcnt.h extern int cnt_loads; in libcnt.c int cnt_loads = 0; // where each linking increments this counter or something... So, my question is how it should be declared and/or defined inside .so library to guaranty that multiple apps from user space get the same instance of that variable counter?

  • How do I format this regex so it will work in fail2ban?

    I've just installed fail2ban on my CentOS server in response to an SSH brute force attempt. The default regular expressions in fail2ban's sshd.conf file do not match any entries in audit.log, which is where SSH seems to be logging all connection attempts, so I am trying to add an expression that will match. The string I am trying to match is as follows: type=USER_LOGIN msg=audit(1333630430.185:503332): user pid=30230 uid=0 auid=500 subj=user_u:system_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 msg='acct="root": exe="/usr /sbin/sshd" (hostname=?, addr=<HOST IP>, terminal=sshd res=failed)' The regular expression I am attempting to use is: ^.*addr=<HOST>, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ I've used regextester.com and regexr to try to build the regex. The testers give me a match for this regex:^.*addr=\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}\.\d{1,3}, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ but fail2ban-regex complains if I don't use the <HOST> tag in the regex. However, using ^.*addr=<HOST>, terminal=sshd res=failed.*$ gives me 0 matches. At this point, I am totally stuck and I would greatly appreciate any assistance. What am I doing wrong in the regex I am trying to use?

  • ls -l freezes terminal locally and remotely

    I've been reading other SF threads regarding ls not returning results or freezing and stalling terminal sessions and it appears they usually the fault of network problems. My problem however, occurs both over remote SSH sessions but also if I am physically at the server itself... I just installed CentOS 5.4 on one of our servers. I'm setting up some rdiff-backup scripts and when I downloaded librsync and untared it, thats when I started seeing some weird behavior with ls -l. wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/librsync/files/librsync/0.9.7/librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz/download /tmp cd /tmp tar -xzf librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Simple enough. To view the files in this directory I did this: ls results: librsync-0.9.7 librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Now, if I ls -l, my terminal freezes. I have to re-ssh in to keep going. After reading SF threads, I thought it was network related. So I was extremely surprised to go sit down at the server itself and see the exact same thing happen... So its obviously not a network issues. Even if I ls /tmp/librsync-0.9.7, my terminal freezes just the same...     ...I've suffered this problem many times and so do my colleagues Sometimes after you stroked some keyboard and mouse combinations this behavior showed up : you have to click a xterm's title bar to focus on that term so that you can input, instead of any places in that window. Whatever you do, minimize, resize don't help. This only thing you can do is logout that session but all the working history will be gone(of course I can save that but it's awkward) I'm eagerly wondering is there any solutions to this?   • VMware Kernel Module Updater hangs on Ubuntu 13.04

    VMware Player has a nice auto-detection of kernel changes, and requests the user to compile the required modules in order to load them. This happens from time to time after a regular update of your system. Usually, the dialog of VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up, asks for root access authentication, and completes the compilation. VMware Player or Workstation checks if modules for the active kernel are available. In theory this is supposed to work flawlessly but in reality there are pitfalls occassionally. With the recent upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and the latest kernel 3.8.0-21 the actual VMware Kernel Module Updater simply disappeared and the application wouldn't start as expected. When you launch VMware Player as super user (root) the dialog would stall like so: VMware Kernel Module Updater stalls while stopping the services Prior to version 5.x of VMware Player or version 7.x of VMware Workstation you would run a command like: $ sudo vmware-config.pl to resolve the module version conflict but this doesn't work anyway. Solution Instead, you have to execute the following line in a terminal or console window: $ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Those switches are (as of writing this article) not documented in the output of the --help switch. But VMware already documented this procedure in their knowledge base: VMware Workstation stops functioning after updating the kernel on a Linux host (1002411).     Getting started:   To get started, logon to Windows XP and click Start –> then right click ‘My Computer’ and select ‘Properties’.       Then select ‘Computer Name’ tab and click ‘Change’       Enter the Computer and Workgroup name and click OK. Make sure all systems use the same Workgroup name. You will have to restart your computer for the change to take effect.       After restarting, click Start –> Control Panel.       Select Security Center –> Windows Firewall.       When Windows Firewall opens, select ‘Exceptions’ tab and check the box to enable File and Printer Sharing. Close out when done.         Next, logon to Fedora and go to System –> Administration –> Add/Remove Software.       Then search for and install system-config-samba. Install all additional packages when prompted. Ensure that the Network Settings along with Correct Gateway is Mentioned so that your System can Access the Internet. system-config-samba     After installing, go to System –> Administration –> Samba.       Then select Preferences –> Server Settings.         Enter the Workgroup name here and click OK.       Select Preferences –> Samba Users.       Edit or Add User to samba database and click OK.       To create shares, click File –> Create Add Shares, then select the folder you wish to share and check: Writable Visible       Then select ‘Access’ tab and give users access to the shares, then click OK to save.       Next, go to System –> Administration –> Firewall.       Select ‘Samba’ under ‘Trusted Services’ and enable Samba.       Next, select ‘ICMP’ and enable ‘Echo Reply (pong) and Echo Request (ping)’      Also add the eth0 interface to the trusted interfaces.     After that go to Applications –> System Tools –> Terminal and run the command below:   su -c 'chkconfig smb on'     Restart your computer and if everything is setup correctly, you should be able to view shares from either system.           At the terminal: Quote: su setenforce 0 service smb restart service nmb restart exit   ENJOYYY....

  • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

    I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button.     Is there a way in Terminal Services to set limits on memory related parameters for a process. For example working set size and, possibly, if it makes sense, total virtual memory allocation for the session? To turn the question around, we have an application which cannot allocate as much virtual memory running on a terminal server as it can when running on a desktop PC (both I would expect to have a limit of 2GB for user mode address space) and I was wondering if there is another limit for processes or users on a terminal server. Perhaps even 2GB per user rather than per process.

    Can you help me understand Linux HA? Pacemaker, Heartbeat, Corosync seem to be part of a whole HA stack, but how do they fit together? How does wackamole differ from Pacemaker/Heartbeat/Corosync? I've seen opinions that wackamole is better than Heartbeat because it's peer-based. Is that valid? The last release of wackamole was 2.5 years ago. Is it still being maintained or active? What would you recommend for HA setup for web/application/database servers?
