• Downloading videos from a flash website

  There are those plugins that can capture flash videos from websites like Youtube and others. There's also the browsing cache which keeps the videos and I can copy them somewhere else and have them stored on my computer. I know of these, but how can I download a video from a website that (I think) is all flash because the address doesn't change wherever you navigate to and so it stays the same when you play a video that's on the website? No plugin I've tried (realplayer, ant video downloadr, IDM) have worked with it and nothing gets cached from that website.

• Cygwin's RSYNC for large data transfer

  I'm using rsync from Cygwin to do a large scale data transfer from an aging HP MSA 1000 to a new DAS attached to a different server. I have a daemon running on the remote server in read only mode and a local copy writing the files to disk. One of my servers is an image repository with over a million files spread across about 300 directories. Each file averages only a couple hundred kilobytes. More so than any other box this one is proving problematic. The rsync process will work for a while - some times 20 minutes, some times an hour - and then it simply quits and sits idle at a given file name. I have verified that the file isn't corrupt on the remote server and that the file is successfully created on the local drive. I ran the rsync client in -vv mode, which returns nothing. I checked out the logs created by the daemon. I looked at the network utilization on the interface, which is sitting idle. I looked at the AV settings to see if anything could pose a problem there. I even updated to the latest release of Cygwin. What do I need to in order to keep this connection up? EDIT: The client system is using the command rsync.exe server::Drives/f/Repo/ /cygdrive/T/Repo --archive -P -vv The server is using the command rsync.exe --daemon --no-detach --config "rsyncd.conf" The contents of rsyncd.conf: use chroot = false strict modes = false hosts allow = 192.168.100.9 log file = c:/rsyncd.log uid=0 gid=0 [Drives] path = /cygdrive read only = yes EDIT: The file server is 2003, the disk type on the array is GPT and the size is of the array is about 4 TB. EDIT: Stranger.. It looks like the process is reliably erroring out at about 175,000 files. Rsync runs fine when I pick the same directory it has problems with one at a time. • RODC password replication and A/D sites and subnets

  I work at a school district with about 30 school sites. Windows 2008 A/D setup - all central at the district office. In A/D, all is under one site, and no subnets defined. One A/D forest and only one domain under that. We're now looking to start putting RODCs at the schools to put the authentication and DNS out there closer to them. I haven't worked with A/D sites and subnets, and only a little with RODC password replication. But just got an invite to a meeting to talk about this tomorrow... If we start breaking down the A/D pieces into sites/subnets, can we also use that as a way to help apply an RODC password replication policy in a way that matches so that only each school sites' users passwords are replicated/cached on their RODC?

  I'm new to Varnish and am interested in using it to speed up my web application I wanted to know if Varnish can handle caching and serving user specific content. For example if I have a page say for example /welcome which is dynamically generated in the backend and is user specific So if User John Smith shows up to /welcome it'll show in the page itself 'Welcome John Smith' and if Bob Smith shows up to /welcome it'll show 'Welcome Bob Smith' Ideally both of those /welcome pages will be cached for each unique User, is this something Varnish can do? (is this even a good Use Case of Varnish?) Thanks!

  I have a customer who is attempting video playback via HTTP progressive download of very large files ( 1 GB). There is no problem once a file is cached at the edge via my CDN, but hits to my origin (first hits prior to edge-cache population) experience stalling and loss of sync between audio and video about an hour and a half into playback. This occurs pretty reliably at that point, suggesting that some threshold somehwere is getting hit. Are there IIS configuration knobs governing HTTP Response size? Other data points: I am unable to replicate this problem. I am looking at client bandwidth and last mile issues. I am looking at possible encoding recipe dependencies. But this problem never came up when we were using a "push" cache configuration (CDN-hosted origin), so something funky serverside at my origin seems like a likely culprit. Thanks ...

• Wiping a laptop from Bios

  I am trying to wipe an old laptops hard drive, it doesn't have a CD drive so have been using a USB to try and wipe the hard drive from the BIOS. I have been using http://www.dban.org/ which I installed as an ISO on the USB Stick. When ever I try to boot into this I get an error saying 'No operating system' Does anyone know of a way to wipe a hard drive? I also tried to boot into safe mode but I just stay on a constant loop. • rsync over ssh is not working anymore, while ssh itself is working fine (Write failed: broken pipe)

  This issue started happening after i changed router. This is the scenario: Windows7 Host Ubuntu 10.04 Guest (VirtualBox) Ubuntu 10.04 remote server What i used to do is run a very basic rsync command: rsync -avz --delete /local/path/ username@host:/path/to/remote/directory This worked perfect until i did change adsl provider, and i changed router aswell: now, this happens: rsync on Ubuntu Guest is not working anymore (to any random server), if using this new router rsync on Ubuntu Guest is WORKING, if i switch back to old router i tried a new virtual box ubuntu install, and the command is WORKING with both the routers So, the not-working-combo is oldUbuntu + newRouter. To get things worst, i can state that (on the not-working ubuntu) i ping the remote host plain ssh connection to the remote host is working fine (i can auth, connect, and do stuff on the remote host)   Has anyone written a compatibility wrapper for svlogd to function as a drop-in replacement for multilog? I'm a fan of UNIX process supervision in the style of daemontools and lately of runit. While runit offers a compatibility mode for many of the daemontools utilities, there is AFAIK no such offering for svlogd. I've got a few systems I'd like to switch over to runit, but I'd rather not modify the .../log/run scripts of every supervised process on those machines. Thanks.

  My Firefox upgraded itself automatically to version 3.6, and I found that IE tab is broken there. Apparently IE tab is known to be broken in this version. Are there any known workarounds such as these? a different plugin with the same functionality a way to tell FF to behave in some legacy or compatibility mode for certain plugins a new version of IE tab In the meanwhile I'm glad that Chrome's current release supports plugins, and IE tab works there.

  So, when I'm browsing in firefox, some letters look grainy or glowing, does anyone know what might be causing this? It doesn't show on all websites, only some. It almost looks like Firefox is trying to render different font colours on top of each other and blends them in the process somehow. • Old CRT screen's high resolution doesn't work anymore on windows 7

  One year ago I decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 7. I had a 17" CRT monitor with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 which worked fine on Windows XP. While installing Windows 7 everything went well until Windows 7 was going to install the video card its driver. Windows 7 puts the screen to its recommended resolution and my screen became black. I waited a few minutes to be sure the installation was finished. I turned off the computer by hand and restarted the computer on a resolution of 800x640. When windows 7 was done installing I went to screen resolutions and the resolution of 1600x1200 was on the top of the list with '(recommended)' next to it. I tried putting it on 1600x1200 but again my screen went black. I installed all windows 7 updates including the video card driver from the NVidia site (NOT from Windows 7). I tried about everything to make it work on 1600x1200 but with no succes. The highest resolution I got with the crt monitor was 1280x1024. I had a TFT screen which had 1280x1024 as max resolution and had better colors, so I used that one till today. My video card is 9600GT and my power supply is beyond sufficient. I even tried to install the driver I had on XP to see if it worked, but no results. I tried classic mode on windows 7, changed the dpi, the frequentie and the monitor settings, but nothing worked. I really like a vertical resolution of 1200, but it seems today I'm bound to all those standard monitors with a resolution of 1980x1024... Can anybody explain to me what the cause is that it worked on Windows XP but not on Windows 7? And maybe a solution to the problem (I actually gave up on getting it fixed...) Thanks a lot in advance. SOLUTION I downloaded the according monitor driver and installed it. Next I rebooted my computer on low resolution (800x640) and connected the CRT monitor. When Windows 7 booted successfully I went to computer management and 'update the driver' of my monitor. I manually selected 'Generic PnP monitor' and made that one active. I want to advanced settings at 'Screen resolution' and selected the mode '1600x1200 (32-bit) 80 Hertz (95 Hertz did not work). Now I had my resolution on 1600x1200. I repeated the earlier step to select the original monitor again instead of the Generic monitor. Quite a way to solve this problem, but it worked! Thanks a lot you all.

  Hello, I'm sure this is a pretty basic question, but I'm just trying to get a grasp of what's going on with my Ubuntu (Hardy Herron) server (running a Rails-based site). It seems that I have free memory available, yet the system is reporting that it is still swapping memory (unless I'm reading this incorrectly?). Here is the "free -m" output total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1024 905 118 0 33 409 -/+ buffers/cache: 462 561 Swap: 2047 95 1952 Could anyone explain to me some possible reasons that it is maintaining 95mb of swap at all times (it is never less)? I'm just looking for some leads on things I could check out that would explain to me exactly how memory is utilized in Linux.

But after reading the comment on this SU question, I was bummed to realize it's a TN screen, which apparently would be a pain for my inteded use ; i.e. portrait mode for reading/coding. Do you know of a comparable model that is "IPS or PVA/MVA", but won't break the bank ? cheers

  I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4 to edit a picture. The problems I have are that I don't know where I can see the mouse cursor coordinate while I move my mouse. Q1 For example, in Paint.Net, whenever I move mouse cursor, I can immediately see the feedback from bottom-right corner (x, y), how can I see such info in photoshop while I use eyedropper function? Q2 For example, when in crop mode, I drag-drop a rectangle but I cannot see the size of the created region of interest? Thank you

• Passenger, Apache and avoiding page caching

  I'm hosting a rack application with passenger and apache. The application is setup to cache the content of each request to the public directory after each request. This allows apache to serve the content directly as a static page for future requests. I would like to tell Apache, presumably through some rewrite rules that any requests with query parameters should not be cached, but instead passed down to the rack application. With a mongrel setup I would just redirect it to the balancer if it meets my rewrite conditions. How do you do the same with passenger?
