  Beginning next week, SOA Proactive Support will begin posting a series of introductory blogs here on working with JMS in a SOA context. The posts will begin with how to set up JMS in WebLogic server, lead you through reading and writing to a JMS queue from the WLS Java samples, continue with how to access it from a SOA composite and, finally, describe how to set up and access AQ JMS (Advanced Queuing JMS) from a SOA/BPEL process. • Getting out of the Helpdesk. Getting into the system administration.

  Today I found out that the job which would have been a promotion for me went to an outside candidate. The position is for a systems admin on our LAN team. I have been working on the helpdesk here for almost two years with another two years experience working it prior. While we are the first tier support we also work in AD, monitor and update certain servers and set up and deploy Windows/Mac images for those we support. What I am looking for here is what can I do to better myself to inside/outside places to move up this ladder? I take what I can from my job - working on projects that I can learn from - but what projects should I be volunteering for? What can I do for myself outside to make me a more viable candidate for a systems admin?

• Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

  I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

• Can you play Halo 2 and Halo 3 on an Xbox360 Arcade?

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 and Halo 3? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• Junior developer introduction to job industry

  I am a junior developer at my second working experience, the first one using PHP with WordPress and currently on Groovy on Grails. I like coding, I attend meetup to discuss technology etc but I still did not understand how to become a real professional with the "know how" attitude. I read Clean Coder, the author advises to spend 20 hours per week of my spare time to learn new technologies and to keep myself up to date. I do not find this realistic, if you want to have a bit of a social life, and I also noticed that learning at work, at least in the places where I worked, is not ideal. No support from seniors for new projects, no pair programming and code reviews, no company trainings, one hour a week tech meetings where seniors walk away after a bit because they already know the topic discussed and so on. Sometimes is quite hard to keep the motivation... My questions are: Is our industry supposed to be like this? Is there real team working in the sense of sharing knowledge and help juniors to get up to speed? Are we supposed to learn new technologies or technology features just in our spare time?Clean Coder says football players do not train during official matches and our working hours are like official matches, we should just perform and learn in other moments. Is it really like this? How can I improve my skills with no support? Is it enough to read books and try out the exercises and perhaps some katas? In almost 5 month of Groovy on Grails experience at work, I have never had the opportunity to create anything from scratch, just worked on existing issues where it was even really difficult to get the domain knowledge from senior devs.

• Big AdventureWorks2012

  Last week I launched AdventureWorks on Azure, an initiative to make SQL Azure accessible to anyone, in my blog post AdventureWorks2012 now available for all on SQL Azure. Since then I think its fair to say that the reaction has been lukewarm with 31 insertions into the [dbo].[SqlFamily] table and only 8 donations via PayPal to support it; on the other hand those 8 donators have been incredibly generous and we nearly have enough in the bank to cover a full year’s worth of availability. It was always my intention to try and make this offering more appealing and to that end I have used an adapted version of Adam Machanic’s make_big_adventure.sql script to massively increase the amount of data in the database and give the community more scope to really push SQL Azure and see what it is capable of. There are now two new tables in the database: [dbo].[bigProduct] with 25200 rows [dbo].[bigTransactionHistory] with 7827579 rows The credentials to login and use AdventureWorks on Azure are as they were before: Server mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net Database AdventureWorks2012 User sqlfamily Password sqlf@m1ly Remember, if you want to support AdventureWorks on Azure simply click here to launch a pre-populated PayPal Send Money form - all you have to do is login, fill in an amount, and click Send. • AFXR problem using gradwell secondary DNS

  Hi All I use Gradwell.com to provide secondary DNS but I keep getting e-mails along the lines of the following saying that it's not working: You have asked us to provide a secondary DNS service for the following domain(s) Unfortunately, the primary DNS server(s) you specified are not permitting the necessary zone transfers from our servers, or they are not answering "SOA" queries for your domain correctly. I have gone through the support procedure and they weren't that helpful. They have suggested the following: Our secondline team have suggested setting the AXFR to use anouther machine. This will ensure that the transfer is not locked down to one machine and should allow any machine to make the request I don't really know what AFXR is and I only have 1 production machine so I can't set the AFXR to use another one! In previous support correspondence we confirmed that I am allowing transfers to the correct IP and that I have the correct ports open on the firewall. I am running Windows Server 2003. What can I do to try and get these zone transfers working? Thanks

• Implementing a multilanguage AI contest platform

  This is a followup to this question. To sum: I'm implementing an AI contest site, where each user may submit several AI implementations for different games. Think about Google AI Challenge but instead of just having a big event once a year, I would like it more on a league fashion, with all virtual players playing with each other every some close period of time. I want to support as many programming languages as possible. I've seen that contest sites (like codeforces) ask you to submit a source code and interact through stdin and stdout. The first question is: what is the best way of supporting multiple languages? As I see it, I can either ask people to upload some binary/script, and interact either through stdin/*stdout*, or sockets, or the file system; or ask people to submit source code, and wrap it with whatever is necessary for the interaction. I would like to skip the need to compile the code by myself (in the server, I mean), but I am willing to do it if its the "best" choice. I need to comunicate virtual players with each other, or even better, with some intermediary arbiter. The second question is regarding security. If I'm going to be running user code in my server, I want to ensure strict security conditions, like no file system access, no networking, etc. Otherwise it would be a safe heaven for hackers. I will be implementing the engine/arbiter in .NET. I would like to support at least C#, C++, Java and Python for the user's implementations. I'm willing to write interfaces for each of these languages to simplify the user interaction with the system. Thanks in advance.

• Hill International Wins Oracle Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award

  In my last blog entry, I discussed Oracle’s Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award, part of the Oracle Excellence awards. Nominations for this year’s awards are due July 17. These awards are presented to organizations that use Oracle products to reduce their environmental footprint while improving their operational efficiency. One of last year’s winners was Hill International. Engineering News-Record magazine recently ranked Hill as the eighth-largest construction management firm in the United States. Hill International was able to streamline its forecasting and improve its visibility into its construction projects’ productivity and profitability using Oracle Primavera. They also implemented Oracle Hyperion Financial Management to standardize its financial reporting and forecasting processes and support its decision-making. With Oracle, Hill gained visibility into the true productivity of each project and cut its financial reporting cycle time from two weeks to one. The company also used the data generated to support new construction project proposals and determine the profitability of potential projects. Hill International realized significant cost savings and reduced its environmental impact on its US$400 million Comcast Center construction project in Philadelphia by centralizing its data storage, reducing paper usage, and maximizing project efficiency. It also leveraged the increased visibility offered by the Oracle solutions to make more environmentally-sound business decisions regarding on-site demolition, re-use of previous structures, green design of new facilities, procurement, and materials usage. • How to input 64-bit hex values in octave

  I'm trying to use Octave as a programmer's calculator. I want to input a 64-bit pointer, but when I do apparently the 64-bit value gets silently truncated to 32-bit: octave:44> base_ptr=0x1010101020202020 base_ptr = 538976288 octave:45> uint64(base_ptr) ans = 538976288 octave:46> printf("%lx\n", base_ptr) 20202020 So it seems like it's truncated the input value to the low 32-bits. I would use scanf, but the docs say it should only be used internally. How can I input the full 64-bit value? Alternately, is there some awesome free programmer's calculator out there for Windows? It has been a while since we last heard of this fancy little thing called Mission Control. It came all the way from JRockit and was renamed to Java Mission Control. This is one of the parts which literally survived the convergence strategy between HotSpot and JRockit. With today's Java SE 7 Update 40 you can actually use it again. Java Mission Control 5.2 The former JRockit Mission Control (JRMC) is now called Java Mission Control (JMC) and is a tools suite which includes tools to monitor, manage, profile, and eliminate memory leaks in your Java application without introducing the performance overhead normally associated with tools of this type. Up to today the 5.1 version was available within the Oracle HotSpot downloads which could only be received by paying customers from the Oracle Support Website. Todays release is the first release of Java Mission Control that is bundled with the Hotspot JDK! The convergence project between JRockit and Hotspot has reached critical mass. • What do you use to loadbalance IPv6 services?

  Hi, the current Linux software environment for IPv6 load balancing looks a bit grim. IPVS has rudimentary support for IPv6 but it's far from complete. NAT for IPv6 seems to be a no-go. Are there any other projects which aim for this goal? Does the IPv6 support in other OS look better? Are there any commercial products which have been successfully used in production environments with non-trivial load patterns? Or is it just that the time for IPv6 hasn't come... yet? ;) best regards, Michael

  Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. I realise that it is difficult to find time to add all of the features that all the uber geeks on this site want, so why bother… lets move to the most popular and moded platform available and allow everyone to add whatever widgets they like. • Client-side code and UPK

  There is a long running discussion in UPK Development regarding the use of any client side code as part of the end-user playback. By this I mean anything which requires an install including ActiveX controls, browser helper objects, stand-alone applications, things that run in the task bar, etc. We all have grown to love zero-footprint applications over the past ten years, but there are some things which are not technically feasible using HTML alone. One example of this is the functionality provided by our SmartHelp in-application support component. This allows the user to launch context sensitive help without making modifications to the target application. (If you are unfamiliar with SmartHelp, more information can be found in the "In-Application Support Guide" in the UPK manual directory) We always try to implement everything we can using only HTML but there are many features which have been requested over the years that would require some client-side code in order to work. When these come up for discussion, there is always a spirited debate about the acceptability of a client side solution. I thought it would be interesting to ask for feedback from a wider audience. What do you think about client-side components? Would your organization consider them? Do you already deploy SmartHelp? Is there a large hurdle to clear for these to be worth the deployment costs? But now organizations are turning to Oracle Exadata for business efficiencies and private cloud solutions—for consolidation and database as a service (DBaaS). University of Minnesota For an inside look at how DBaaS is working in the real world, it’s worth checking into the University of Minnesota’s database hotel.  With more than 50,000 students, the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis is one of the largest universities in the United States. The university’s centralized IT group not only has to support all those students but also must provide support and services to more than 40 departments and colleges within the university. They have two Exadata Database Machine X2-2 half-rack systems from Oracle, with four database nodes each and roughly 30 terabytes of usable disk space for each of the Oracle Exadata systems. The university is using Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) for high availability and the Data Guard feature of Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, for disaster recovery capabilities. The deployment has been live in production since May 2011. • Can you recommend a robust OpenAPI 2.0 provider?

  Help me find a robust OpenID 2.0 provider! We're looking at various SSO solutions for our organization, and I would like to suggest OpenID as a viable option, since (a) there is good consumer support in a number of web applications, and (b) it's simpler to implement than Shibboleth, which is the alternative technology. However, this requires that we find a robust OpenID provider, ideally one meeting the 2.0 specification. The only solutions I've come across so far are: Atlassian Crowd This looks great, although the $4000 price tag may make it a tough sell. Community-ID This looks like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure the project quality is at a suitable level (yet). In particular, it's not clear if LDAP support actually works (which will be a requirement in our environment). Have you implemented OpenID in your environment? What are you using? Have you selected an alternative SSO technology?

• Swapping from NHibernate to Entity Framework &ndash; Sanity Check

  Now I’m not an expert in either of these techs.  I have a nice framework for unit of work / repository built with NHibernate.  Works pretty well.  I use FluentNhibernate to do the mappings.  Works well.  Takes very little code to get going with a DB back OO model. So why swap? Linq.  In Entity Framework you get much better linq support.  Visibility. I have no idea what's really happening with NHibernate….its a cloud of mystery most of the time.  You have to read all the blogs, mailing lists, etc to know what's going on. So, EF 4.0 looks like pretty good….  it has reasonably good support for mapping POCOs.  Wrapping UnitOfWork and Repository around it seems ok. Only thing I haven’t liked too much is having to explicitly load lazy loading entities. So…. am I sane?  is EF the way to go?  or is NHibernate going to suddenly release the next generation of coolness?  Is there any other major gotchas of using EF over NHibernate?
