  • Software to measure power draw of HP Server

    I'm after some software to measure the power draw of a HP Server, namely a DL360 series. I know Nagios is used for logging and monitering but I'm not sure if it logs power usage as well. I've also tried to find the HP Server Management package but am not sure if this shows power usage either. I'm thinking my best bet would to buy some sort of device that goes inbetween the wall and the servers plug. Can anybody suggest what would do for me?

  • Adding features to an SQL Server 2008 standard with SP1

    I have MS SQL Server 2008 with SP1 installed. I want to add the Full text feature to the installation. Do I need to run the SP1 update again after I add this feature? If I do try to run it (SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU) it fails with this error: "There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer". Should I uninstall SP1 and re-install? Doesnt make much sense.

B can mount A either as CIFS or NFS (Services for Unix NFS server running on A). This is an absolutely time critical operation. What is the best way of achieving this? Note: benchmarked NFS vs CIFS and CIFS was faster and there was less variance in the speed (haven't tuned the NFS setup at all)

  • MWS2K8R2: Enabling Media Sharing using Streaming Media Services Role

    So I have a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 that stores a large collection of media (mostly mp3s) and I want to be able to deliver these files using a server/client setup with Windows Media Player being the client. I downloaded and installed Streaming Media Services Role. I even setup a publishing point with on-demand access. My issue is I can connect using WMP12 but it only connects as more of a stream and not a shared library. I can pause/play/skip as if it's a powerful radio station which is ok in my book but what I'd really like to do is allow me to control my music remotely, search and play for artists, maybe create playlists (not required but nice) and even connect it to an xbox. Is Streaming Media Services Role not what I should be using for this? Would installing WMP and sharing using that mechanism be a better option? Any Ideas?

  • Strange permission errors with Windows Server 2008

    I just don't know a better way to describe my issue that is driving me nuts. I am trying to establish a test domain with virtual machines on a box that has Win7 with VMwware workstation installed. The purpouse with this domain will be so that we can try and test different situations before they go into the production network. I build a VM with WinSrv2008R2 and I am using that VM as a template to make other servers for the domain by making clones of it. Now I raise a DC with one clone and a member server with another clone - I add the server to the domain. I am following a standard procedure as always (it is not my first domain). Then I make an admin account and I am adding the admin to be a member of the Domain and Enterprise Admins group. That admin is admin with full priviledges on the DC.. no problem there. But on the other server has ... somewhat half the privileges and I cant log in via RDP. I tryed with another account. Same issues. For example (with half the privileges): I can't open the Even Viewer if I go via Start - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. But I can open the Even Viewer via the server manager. You can notice this on the image below. I mean WTF??? I am going crazy, I haven't experienced anything similar in my three years of expertise. I already lost 3 days troubleshooting this. Could this be related with the cloning? Perhaps if I make fresh installs of WinSrv2008 there won't be any problems? I've had raised test domains as VMs on other occasions before, and there weren't any problems then. This is VMware Workstation 8. I've made clones before, on Workstation 7 it didn't had any problems.   • Ubuntu installer doesn't see internal hard drive on DELL Vostro 3360

    I just received a new DELL Vostro 3360, it has Windows 7 preinstalled. When it comes to the partition window I can't see the hard drive there. I see only /dev/sda or /dev/sdb (either one and in both cases it's a usb drive from which I'm installing). I tried every imaginable BIOS configuration. Tried to change the SATA mode to ATA, DHCI and more. EDIT: I tried to install with standard Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, and 11.10 64 bit official versions. No luck. I'll appreciate any suggestion.

  • Legacy VB6 application under Win7 SQL error

    We have a rather unfortunate legacy application at work, written originally in VB6 it predates anybody in our IT department by at least 5 years. We have a contracted developer for ongoing maintenance and where he can he rewrites sections over into .NET code (Not sure about his techniques here, this is a side job for his regular work as an IBM engineer) the application works fine (such as it is) under windows XP. We have only a couple of Windows 7 machines mainly for testing and this application seems to run into a wall. Things like the background not loading and SQL errors. This is even running under administrator. Running an SQL trace from the ODBC control panel shows several interesting things. It makes a connection to the database successfully initially where it runs a query to determine if it is running the correct version. The only thing that is different in this particular scenario though is Windows 7, I know the connection string is fine since it works on the XP machines. The VB components are supposed to be still functional under Win7. My computer is running 32 bit win7 and my VP is running Win7 64 bit and both have the same problem so that can be ruled out. I have already tried reinstalling the SQL Native Client and the VB runtime as well as the application in question. Hopefully I can find a solution and not have to resort to using the XP VM.

  • SQL 2005 Log Shipping - Was working, now isnt!

    Hello, I had log shipping working between two SQL 2005 server fine. I suspect that a job was added to the source server which backed up the transaction log to disk (nothing to do with the existing log shipping job). As I understand it, if you do this then log shipping will fail to work. Sure enough, it no longer works. I've deleted the job which had just been created. Log shipping still does not work. I've rebooted both servers and, again, Log shipping does not work. I'm at a loss now... all I get is the folloing error: The log shipping secondary database XXXXXXXXXX has restore threshold of 45 minutes and is out of sync. No restore was performed for 5882 minutes. Restored latency is 15 minutes. Check agent log and logshipping monitor information. Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Scoping a home dev server

    Hi. I’m looking to build a multi-purpose home development server. In this post, I’m looking to outline what I want from such a system, and the ‘why’s of it, to some limited extent, and finally, some rudiments of how I’m looking to go about that. I’m mostly a developer, with just about some sysadmin familiarity. So, please excuse, correct me, and suggest on any ignorance which would come across in the following ;-) It will serve the following goals to start with:- NAS (Looking at using ZFS) Source control repo e.g Git server Database e.g MySQL server Continuous Integration e.g Hudson server Other stuff as and when they come up e.g RabbitMQ etc A development sandbox to play around with new stuff I want to achieve a high uptime for 2-5 as much as possible. They should run as independent services and with minimal maintenance. (e.g TurnKey Linux appliances) I’m thinking of running them as individual Xen DomUs. Then, maybe the NAS can be a Dom0 and 6 can be another DomU. The User for this would be mostly me. I can see 2-4 being sometimes used by 2-3 users, but that would be infrequent. I’m looking for a repeatable setup. Ideally I’d like to automate this setup through Chef or Puppet or something similar. Once everything runs, I want to be able to ssh/screen/tmux into 1-6 from my laptop or any other computer on the LAN/on-the-go. My queries are:- Is putting 1-6, all of them on a single box, a good idea? If so, what kind of hardware should I be looking at, for a low-cost, low-power setup? Although not at present, but in future I might be looking at adding audio/media servers to the mix. Would that impact the answers to 1? I have an old Pentium 3 and 810e motherboard combination. Is there any way I could put it to use? I had a look at the Sheevaplug, and was wondering if I could split off the NAS on its own using that. But ruled it out preliminarily due to its reported heating issues. Is it something i should still consider? Thanks in advance Have posted this question previously on SuperUser but no responses yet.   • 0xC0017011 and other error messages - what is the error message text?

    Recently there was a bug raised against BIDS Helper which originated in my Expression Editor control. Thankfully the person that raised it kindly included a screenshot, so I had the error code (HRESULT 0xC0017011) and a stack trace that pointed the finger firmly at my control, but no error message text. The code itself looked fine so I searched on the error code but got no results. I’d expected to get a hit from Books Online with the Integration Services Error and Message Reference topic at the very least, but no joy. There is however a more accurate and definitive reference, namely the header file that defines all these codes dtsmsg.h which you can find at- C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\SDK\Include\dtsmsg.h Looking the code up in the header file gave me a much more useful error message. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // The parameter is sensitive // // MessageId: DTS_E_SENSITIVEPARAMVALUENOTALLOWED // // MessageText: // // Accessing value of the parameter variable for the sensitive parameter "%1!s!" is not allowed. Verify that the variable is used properly and that it protects the sensitive information. // #define DTS_E_SENSITIVEPARAMVALUENOTALLOWED ((HRESULT)0xC0017011L) Unfortunately I’d forgotten all about this. By the time I had remembered about it, the person who raised the issue had managed to narrow it down to something to do with having  sensitive parameter. Putting that together with the error message I’d finally found, a quick poke around in the code and I found the new GetSensitiveValue method which seemed to do the trick. The HResult fields are also listed online but it only shows the short error message, and it doesn’t include that all so important HRESULT value itself. So let this be a lesson to you (and me!), if you need to check  SSIS error go straight to the horses mouth - dtsmsg.h. This is particularly true when working with early builds, or CTP releases when we expect the documentation to be a bit behind. There is also a programmatic approach to getting better SSIS error messages. I should to take another look at the error handling in the control, or the way it is hosted in BIDS Helper. I suspect that if I use an implementation of Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSInfoEvents100 I could catch the error itself and get the full error message text which I could then report back. This would obviously be a better user experience and also make it easier to diagnose any issues like this in the future. See ExprssionEvaluator.cs for an example of this in use in the Expression Editor control.

Is it possible to install some sort of SIP server/gateway/proxy (on a linux server), that would register those 4 accounts and I would be able to connect to it as if it was 1 account? Currently I have a website with a list of audio products (essentially a search engine for audio deals). http://www.soundplaza.co.uk Once you go to the details page, you can then press the 'view deal' button to go to providers site e.g. = http://www.soundplaza.co.uk/all-deals/113/bookshelf-speakers/acoustic-energy-1 This jump between two sites is a bit harsh and I would like to show a transition page, to simply ease them into another site and not scare them off. Within this tradition page I will have a simple loading gif and some graphics showing that your transferring. QUESTION: What is the best way to send the details (link, product name etc) to this transfer page, to then wait 5 seconds, to then move on to the desired link... this can in NO WAY damage my SEO, if anything rel="nofollow" would be great if possible. Currently I have seen that you can submit form to the transition page, then you can use php sleep and then php header to transfer... however I am not sure if php header will transfer SEO value tot he provider? Any opinions would be great! Thanks

    I have a classic ASP website that is crashing in IIS7. It is crashing because IIS doesn't allow file uploads greater than a certain size. I know this because files below about 200k work fine. I removed the Status Code 500 error in IIS but I still don't get a file name and the line where my code failed as I do when running locally. Instead I get: "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. If you are the system administrator please click here to find out more about this error."
