  • Hard drive and DVD drive are not being detected by the BIOS

    My hard drive and DVD drive are not being detected by the BIOS when I go in to the boot option menu by pressing F12. When I put the hard drive in a different computer it's being detected. I am assuming it's either the mother board or the BIOS. Since the HDD is not being detected I have installed Ubuntu on a flash drive, but even that has become so slow, that it takes around 5 minutes for it to boot. I want to flash the BIOS before I think of changing the motherboard. I have downloaded the updated file and it has a flash.bat and a afudos.exe. I have to run the .bat file. I downloaded the Dos in a box and went to the DOS directory where the .bat file is and tried to run it, but it gives me the error message "This program cannot run under this operating system" Any help would be appreciated

  • Sound distortion in Ubuntu 14.04

    I recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Dell XPS 15 (L502X). Previously I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed on the laptop along with Windows 8.1 dual boot. The sound worked perfectly fine in Ubuntu 12.04 and is working fine in Windows 8.1. Of late, I have been experiencing sound distortion coming from the subwoofer at moderately high volume levels. At the same level I am unable to reproduce the same effect in Windows 8.1. Also, I did a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 over 12.04. Can anyone please confirm this and help me with this? Thanks

  • How to make unity unresponsive in Unity session in precise?

    Recently I wanted to test the a keyboard shortcut, which is supposed to kill X server (hence very useful when you have a crash). That shortcut is not dependent on any particular window manager (like lxde, unity, kwin etc). So, it must work, even when you have unresponsive window manager (as opposed to Alt+Ctrl+Backspace which kills the session, and bring you a login screen). That's why I interested to make my WM (unity) unresponsive. Is past, it was very easy. Opening a terminal, typing unity --replace and then force close the terminal, was the simplest procedure. But unfortunately, This is not true in Ubuntu 12.04, (they make it very robust) Because whenever I kill the terminal, Unity automagically restart itself. I also tried compiz --replace but wasn't successful. My question is: How can I make Unity unresponsive while I am in Unity session, so that window manager does not recognize any keyboard shortcut.

  • Boot windows from grub

    I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu on my hard disk. I had installed Ubuntu using Wubi. To uninstall Ubuntu I deleted the Ubuntu partitions from Windows 7 Disk Management. When I re-boot my computer it shows grub rescue. What do I need to do to re-gain access to Windows? I do not have a Windows 7 DVD. Commands like rootnoverify, chainloader do not work in grub rescue. I get an unknown command error. PS: I am posting this from another computer :)

  • Defining an implementation independent version of the global object in JavaScript

    I'm trying to define the global object in JavaScript in a single line as follows: var global = this.global || this; The above statement is in the global scope. Hence in browsers the this pointer is an alias for the window object. Assuming that it's the first line of JavaScript to be executed in the context of the current web page, the value of global will always be the same as that of the this pointer or the window object. In CommonJS implementations, such as RingoJS and node.js the this pointer points to the current ModuleScope. However, we can access the global object through the property global defined on the ModuleScope. Hence we can access it via the this.global property. Hence this code snippet works in all browsers and in at least RingoJS and node.js, but I have not tested other CommomJS implementations. Thus I would like to know if this code will not yield correct results when run on any other CommonJS implementation, and if so how I may fix it.     I am a Student at Northeastern University. They use G-Apps for email ids, so whenever I need to email someone, using university Id which ends with husky.neu.edu. I have to go Gmails compose mail, They have some LDAP Setting by which I get all the email ids using AJAX in "To" as soon as I start typing. I want to configure same in Thunderbird, I contacted university but they are not able to help me.   • MySQL Not Turning On

    I have an amazon ec2 instance running on the Amazon Linux AMI and its a micro instance. I wanted to install Django onto my server so I entered these commands wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/go wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/django.conf chmod 744 go ./go So after I was done, I ran sudo service httpd restart and sudo service mysqld restart and This is what came up for mysqld: Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] So I deleted the django files /usr/local/python2.6.8/site-packages/django_registration.egg and I tried finding the error and I found out that in my /etc/my.cnf for the socket, it said socket=/var/lock/subsys/mysql.sock so I went to /var/lock/subsys/ and there was no mysql.sock. I tried creating one using vim but it still didn't work. Then I checked the error log and it said Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) So I am pretty much lost right now. I know it has something to do with mysql.sock If you might know a reason why this was caused could you please let me know? I have a wordpress site on my server, so i kind of need MySQL to work.   • Windows 7 DVD doesn't boot up, neither does USB. :'(

    My problem is that i'm not able to install windows 7. Been trying to install this since past 1 week. The methods i've tried are: I have a windows 7 bootable DVD which doesnt boot up. (I've set BIOS to boot from DVD ROM first but it just won't boot from the DVD). Tried to install Windows 7 from the same DVD to a friend's PC and it worked. So the DVD has no issues. I tried to run 'Setup.exe' from within the DVD. The two options pop-up 'Check compatibility' and 'Install now'. On clicking install now, after sometime, an error is encountered with the message 'Windows was unable to create a required installation folder' error code:0x8007000D. I am running Windows XP Professional and there's only one user on the PC which is the Admin, so i do not know why is the setup not getting permissions. I've also uninstalled my antivirus, CD burning software, disabled firewall and disconnected all other devices, but its still the same. I tried to install it from a USB device by making it bootable but that too doesnt work. (Yes the mobo supports booting from the USB). The problem is that XP does not recognize a 'USB' device on boot. Rather it shows this USB stick as a removable 'Hard Drive'. Furthermore, i changed the order of Hard Drive boot to boot from this removable Hard Drive first, it still boots my existing OS. Is there anything else that can be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) Please ask if any other information is required, this post is becomimg increasingly long to add any other details. PS: I want to dual boot windows 7 with my existing XP, but that would be after i manage to run the windows 7 setup in the first place. PPS: Please bare with any 'not-so-technical' terms, i am a beginner with this. Again, thank you for taking the time and trying to help, really appreciate it. :)
