  • How TiVo is messing up customer support.

    Ok,  So I've gotten a TiVo and overall, I'm happy, but there have been issues and I suspect I've a defective unit. - Now the nice folks after many service calls were happy to swap it out, and to ensure continuity of service, they sent me a new unit (after a $109 deposit).  That was yesterday. Today, when we go to watch a little TV, and wait for our replacement unit to arrive we find our TiVo service has been suspended. WTF? They have an exchange program, but your unit your waiting to exchange is as dead as a doornail until the replacement arrives. How hard is it to keep the old unit active for an extra week? Here is the exchange w/Tivo below... You are currently number 1 in the queue. We apologize for the delay. We will assign you to an agent as soon as one is available.The average amount of time a customer has to wait is 00:13.  Kaylene (Listening)  Kaylene: Thank you for contacting TiVo! My name is Kaylene. So that I may better assist you, are you an existing customer?  james Fleming: yes I am, but I'm now having second thoughts about being one    Kaylene: Thank you for verifying your information. How may I assist you today James?  james Fleming: I've been having issues w/a tivo box & I'm getting a replacement sent out to me (after paying an additional deposit) and now my current unit is no longer activated  Kaylene: I can help you today!  Kaylene: When we process an exchange we do transfer over the service to the replacement box so it is active and ready to go when you receive it.  james Fleming: which is to say you also make my current box worthless until such time I receive a new box?!?!?  Kaylene: I apologize that your original box was deactivated so we could activate your replacement box.  james Fleming: Why on Earth would I bother to pay in advance for a new box if you were going to kill my existing box.  Kaylene: What features are you needing to use on your current box?  james Fleming: I need to be able to access my netflix subscription (if I'm lucky enough to have it work without rebooting)  Kaylene: Can I have you verify the TiVo Service Number of your TiVo box please?  james Fleming: 7460011906979b4  Kaylene: We have your current box temporary service but not all features are available with temporary service as it is not paid for service.  Kaylene: If you like I can transfer your service back to your current box for now. Then once you receive the new box you will have to call in and have the service transferred back to the new box.  james Fleming: Not paid for? Let's see> one tivo box + 3 year service plan + monthly service + $109 deposit on a second box = what?  Kaylene: Would you like me to transfer your service back to your current box?  james Fleming: Yes - that would be helpful  Kaylene: All you will need to do is contact us again once you receive the new box so we can transfer it back.  Kaylene: I have put your service back on TiVo box 7460011906979b4.  james Fleming: What would also be helpful is your firm informing me to how you'd be cutting service in the interim.  james Fleming: Again - I opted to pay to have a second box delivered BEFORE returning the box I have - thus trying to have a continuity of service..  Kaylene: This is not something we normally do so it is important when you contact us to transfer the service back to the new box when you receive it that you reference this case number: 110622-006089.  Kaylene: I apologize about the inconvenience. You may need  force a few connections for the box to recognize the service again.  james Fleming: If it's not something you normally do than WHY would you have a $109 fee and a term for the service.  james Fleming: I am not mad at you, but your company is not impressing me and I'm blogging about this experience  Kaylene: Again I apologize about the inconvenience but you should be good to go now.   • Apple Mail authentication failure to Apache James while Thunderbird connects

    I have an Apache James 2.3.2 email server running on RHEL 5. I have been connecting to it successfully for months using Thunderbird (currently version 12.0.1). I am attempting to connect to the same account using Apple's Mail 6.5. On the first dialog, to add an account to Apple's Mail, it asks for full name, email address, and password. It then asks for an incoming mail server. I put account type equal to POP, the incoming mail server equal to the host in my email address, and my username and password. It comes back with the error: "Logging in to the POP server "" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot receive messages." While the dialogs are different in Thunderbird, I believe that I am giving it exactly the same parameters, and succeeding with authentication.

    JavaOne in Brazil, currently taking place in Sao Paolo, is one event I'd love to attend. I once heard "father of Java" James Gosling talk about Java developers throughout the world. He observed that there were good developers everywhere. It was not the case, he said, that that the really good developers are in one place and the not-so-good developers are in another. He encountered excellent developers everywhere. Then he paused and said that the craziest developers were definitely the Brazilians. As anyone who knows James would realize, this was meant as high praise. He said the Brazilians would work through the night on projects and were very enthusiastic and spontaneous - features that Brazilian culture is known for. Brazilian developers are responsible for creating one of the most impressive uses of Java ever - the applications that run the Brazilian health services. Starting from scratch they created a system that enables an expert doctor in Rio to look at an X-Ray of a patient near the Amazon and offer advice. One of the main architects of this was Java Champion Fabinane Nardon the distinguished Brazilian Java architect and open-source evangelist. As she writes in her blog:"In 2003, I was invited to assemble a team and architect a Public Healthcare Information System for the city of São Paulo, the largest in Latin America, with 14 million inhabitants. The resulting software had 2.5 million of lines of code and it was created, from specification to production, in only 10 months.     I have C++ project in the Ubuntu OS, Eclipse CDT. My final goal is to build the project binaries for FreeBSD OS. The first test. I create simple C++ CDT project with main.cpp file: cout << "OK" << endl; and build it. The downside is that if Travis CI tries to notify us that we broke the build, we don't see it. [email protected] does exist and forwards to all the developers. We have too many possible pair to do any of the following: set up actual [email protected] email addresses or groups (n^2 email addresses) set up forwarding rules for [email protected] (n^2 forwarding rules) set up forwarding rules for [email protected] (n forwarding rules for each of n developers) Does anyone have a system that works for them?

But the output is just HelloWorld and the current directory remains with no change. I mean my directory remains as /home/alex and not go to the /home/alex/Documents/A/B/C. So where is wrong?

  • Shell not finding binary when attempting to execute it (it's _definitely_ there)

    I have a specific set of binaries installed at: ~/.GutenMark/binary/<binaries...> These were previously working correctly, but for seemingly no reason when I attempt to execute them the shell claims not to find them: james@anubis:~/.GutenMark/binary$ ls -al ... -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 2979036 2009-05-10 13:34 GUItenMark ... -rwxrwxrwx 1 james james 76952 2009-05-10 13:34 GutenMark ... -rwxr-xr-x 1 james james 10156 2009-05-10 13:34 GutenSplit ... james@anubis:~/.GutenMark/binary$ ./GutenMark bash: ./GutenMark: No such file or directory james@anubis:~/.GutenMark/binary$ I've tried to isolate the cause of this, with no success. The same happens with zsh, bash, and sh (all giving their appropriate "file not found" error -- this is definitely not a strange output from the binary itself). The same happens either as user james or as root. Nor is it directory specific; if I move the whole directory installation, or just a single binary, to anywhere else, the same happens when attempting to execute it. The same even happens when I put the directory in $PATH and just execute "GutenMark". It also happens when I execute it from a script (I've tried Python's commands module -- though this appears to just call sh). The problem appears to be specific to the binaries themselves, yet they appear to never actually get executed. Any ideas?

    Changing some Software Update settings I possibly corrupted something, and now I don't see many packages in the list. For example: alex@u120464:~$ sudo apt-get install codeblocks [sudo] password for alex: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package codeblocks I checked all options in the Software Sources dialog, but packages are still not available. How can I fix this? OS: Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit. It looks like most Ubuntu repositories are not searched, how can I restore default update behaviour?

  • XNA 2D Collision with specific tiles

    I am new to game programming and to these sites for help. I am making a 2D game but I can't seem to get the collision between my character and certain tiles. I have a map filled with grass tiles and water tiles and I want to keep my character from walking on the water tiles. I have a Tiles class that I use so that the tiles are objects and also has the collision method in it, a TileEngine class used create the map and it also holds a list of Tiles, and the class James which is for my character. I also have a Camera class that centers the camera on my character if that has anything to do with the problem. The character's movement is intended to be restricted to 4 directions(up, down, left, right). As an extra note, the bottom right water tile does have collision, but the collision does not occur for any of the other water tiles.   • Simple python oo issue

    Hello, Have a look a this simple example. I don't quite understand why o1 prints "Hello Alex" twice. I would think that because of the default self.a is always reset to the empty list. Could someone explain to me what's the rationale here?   • IASA South East Florida Chapter Meeting Recap - June 2011

    Erik Russell and Giles Marino were our speakers for the June 2011 IASA South East Florida Chapter meeting.    Attendees filled all available seats at the Microsoft office conference room where the event was held. This highlights the high interest in Enterprise Architecture as a career track and chartered project role. Also in attendance were our Board of Directors and Alex Funkhouser, President, Sherlock Technology.   Rainer Habermann, Chapter President, kicked off the meeting by introducing our speakers and Board of Directors.   Alex Funkhouser, President of South Florida’s staffing firm Sherlock Technology spoke briefly about available Software Architect positions in the area. Alex also congratulated and presented this week’s Sherlock Raffle winner with $500 in cash.   Our speakers Giles and Erik then proceeded with their talk. Erik presented a business case in the government sector where Enterprise Architecture helped a government entity cut costs and streamline its various business operations.   • Custom PHPINIDir setting in VirtualHost affecting other VirtualHosts

    One of the clients requested a personal php.ini configuration for his website, so I have set his VirtualHost as follows: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/home/alex/www.domain.tld" ServerName www.domain.tld AssignUserID alex alex PHPINIDir /home/alex/php.ini </VirtualHost> The client created php.ini file under /home/alex/ which contains only this setting: session.save_path = "/home/alex/.php_sessions/" Afterall he started to complaint that he sees all other session files generated by other clients' websites. After doing some basic troubleshooting, I realized, that his php.ini settings are affecting all websites specified in the httpd-vhosts.conf. Question is why? Since PHPINIDir is only specified inside one specific VirtualHost?

  • htaccess rewrite issue while testing on localhost

    I'm running OSX (10.6) with Apache with .htaccess enabled. In the htaccess file I have the code: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^page/([A-Z0-9._%+-]+) index.php?page=$1 [NC] This runs perfectly on my external server and redirects nicely to index.php?page=whatever However when testing locally from localhost/~james/In%20Progress/Vila%20Maninga/page/whatever I get redirected to localhost/~james/Users/James/Sites/In%20Progress/Vila%20Maninga/index.php?page=whatever. For some reason 'Users/James/Sites/' is being added. Does anyone why this is happening and how to prevent it? Many thanks, James

I've looked at various examples and answers but they seem to create duplicate rows or require indexes (merge on datatable etc) I can't do this via SQL as one source is from a linked Oracle server accessed via MSSQL and the other from a different MSSQL Server that does not have linked access.   • How do I run Firefox OS as a standalone application?

    I got the add-on for the Firefox OS simulator, and it works great! It even keeps functioning after Firefox is closed, so I can save processing power for other things. I'd like to run it as a standalone application, so that I don't even have to open Firefox in the first place. I've gone to the System Monitor, and it says that the process (I guessed which by CPU usage and filename) was started via /home/james/.mozilla/firefox-trunk/vkuuxfit.default/extensions/[email protected]/resources/r2d2b2g/data/linux64/b2g/plugin-container 3386 true tab, so I tried running that in the Terminal (after I'd closed the simulator, of course,) but it gives this: james@james-OptiPlex-GX620:~/.mozilla/firefox-trunk/vkuuxfit.default/extensions/[email protected]/resources/r2d2b2g/data/linux64/b2g$ ./plugin-container 3386 true tab ./plugin-container: error while loading shared libraries: libxpcom.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory james@james-OptiPlex-GX620:~/.mozilla/firefox-trunk/vkuuxfit.default/extensions/[email protected]/resources/r2d2b2g/data/linux64/b2g$ What should I do? Is what I'm attempting even possible? (It should be, since the simulator kept running even after Firefox itself was closed...) NOTE: I've tried chmod u+sx plugin-container, but that didn't help.

  • Dell XPS + Apple Mini-Display Adaptor + Projector = KABOOM

    Remember how I blogged about rolling with the punches? So today my buddy and Prairie Dev Con speaker James Chambers went to present on Microsoft MVC. He brought his fancy new Dell XPS laptop, which he had used to do presentations and stream internet video to a projector before. But today, the technology gods were not smiling… James tries to connect his laptop to the projector. Nothing. The projector just can’t recognize the connection. Realize that we’ve already had two sessions in that room already, so everything *should* work. The Dell XPS laptop James has doesn’t have a VGA port. Instead, it has HDMI and Mini-Display ports. James had one of the Apple mini-display to VGA adapters. If I connected my Mac Book Pro, I could connect no problem, so it wasn’t the adapter. He could connect his laptop to projectors before, so it wasn’t the laptop. And we’d already had sessions, so it wasn’t the projector. So what was it? Well, all three it turns out. Thanks to this post over at Irongeek.com we discovered that using Windows 7 on a Dell XPS with the Apple connector and a non-plug-in-play projector won’t work. So the fix was ditch the Apple connector, use the Star Tech model instead (listed in the Irongeek article). So James is good to go, he’s going to talk at the last session and we’ve moved the Windows 8 talk Jim Russell and I were going to do until tomorrow. Roll with the punches…
