  • What statistics app should I use for my website?

    I have my own server (with root access). I need statistics of users who visit my website etc etc... I have looked at an app called Webalyzer... Is this a good choice? I run apache2 on a Ubuntu 9 system... If you know of any good statistics apps for servers please let me know. And a follow-up question: All statistics are saved in log-files right? So how large would these log-files become then? Possibility to split them would be good, dont know if this is possible with Webalyzer though...

  • Running Solr on VPS problem

    I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different.     I have read this article: https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/user-management.html But it doesn't go into depth with the privileges section. I need to know how to set privileges of me (as a user). I am the only user, but I want access to everything, but I don't want to manage my VPS logged in as root. So I am creating a username. Anybody have a list of privileges, what they mean and how to set them? Thanks

  • How to troubleshoot this memory usage?

    I have a classifieds website. I use PHP, MySql, and SOLR. Solr uses a Servlet Container, in my case JETTY, which is java application. I just noticed that something was terribly wrong on my website. I opened the terminal and entered the "top" command and noticed that JAVA was EATING all the cpu and mem. Now I thought "Ok, maybe I need more mem and cpu" So I increased it. But along with the increase the java app started eating more. This has never happened before, and it is either a bug, or a hack of some kind. Anyways, I need to troubleshoot this now, and so I wonder how do I do this? Can I somehow pinpoint exactly when the memory usage started to go up from some error log? How does one troubleshoot this? How do I prevent it? Is it possible to prevent too many requests somehow, if they are within a timeline? Thanks

Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Ignoring error generating classes.jsa Why is this? I just entered sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts Is there something I must do first? What is Proc? If you need more input let me know. Thanks

  • Solr on Tomcat (Ubuntu OS) installation help

    I have to install Solr on my Ubuntu Server. However, Solr wont work without Tomcat or another container, and also Java. I have successfully installed tomcat6 and java. BUT, in a tomcat6 guide online, it says I should configure iptables to allow connections via port 8080, which I have done. Then the guide says I can test the tomcat6 by going to: http://my_ip_adress:8080 But this makes the browser just load and wait somehow for a response, and finally display "website not available". I have NO clue how to install Solr with Tomcat. Does anybody know how? How do I know Tomcat6 works? BTW: When I do this: /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start then it says OK. If you need something let me know, I really need help with this one. Thanks UPDATE: When executing this: sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 status it respons is Tomcat servlet engine is running with pid 28641

    HOW MANY GB OF TRAFFIC IS REQUIRED PER MONTH? Any way to calculate this? Webhosting companies have a limit when ordering, so I need to know... A classifieds website using PHP and MYSQL. MYSQL has around 500thousand records. Not much graphics. Pretty advanced search feautures. How much traffic would I need do you think? Thanks

  • Ubuntu server security; Is this enough?

    I have a classifieds website, which uses php5 and mysql, and also java (solr). I am new to linux and VPS... I have installed SSH, and I have installed IPtables, and also I have PuTTY which I use as a terminal. Also, Filezilla is installed on my computer, and whenever I connect to my VPS, the "host" field in Filezilla says "Sftp://ip-adress" so I am guessing it is a safe connection. I used this command to find out if I had SSHD installed: whereis sshd and it returned some places where it actually was installed. So I havent actually installed it. Now, my Q is, is this enough? What other security measures should I take? Any good articles about security and how to set it up on a VPS? Remember, I have a windows xp OS on my laptop, but the OS for my VPS is Ubuntu 9.10. Also, I have apache2 installed... Thanks

  • permissions on upload folder not working

    I have a php script which uploads images to a folder. I have these permissions on the upload folder: drwxrwxr-- 4 user user 4096 2010-06-02 16:20 temp_images Shouldn't these permissions be enough for files to be uploaded to the folder? But this doesn't work. It only works when I set the permissions to 777. "user" is added to the www-data group, still no luck. Any ideas why?

  • Missed something? Cant upload files to server (permissions)

    I can upload files as "root" to the Ubuntu server. Then I created a user (me). Next I added the user to the group www-data. Then assigned rwx permissions to www-data. Next, when I try to upload, delete or modify files VIA FILEZILLA, I cant. But via the terminal, I can change files using sudo command. What should I do to be able to upload files without getting the "permission denied" in filezilla? If you need more input let me know. Thanks

  • Java process eating CPU; Why?

    I have a Linux server which I have installed Java on. Sometimes, and only sometimes when a large nr of visitors visit my website, the site hangs. When I open the terminal and enter the "top" command to see whats going on, I can see that "Java" process is eating CPU! Like 400%. I have also tried ps aux command, and can see that the command is from usr/bin/java I have little experience in troubleshooting this kind of things, so I turn to you guys for help. I have a java container installed (Jetty) which I must have in order to use SOLR (search engine) which is integrated into my website. I can start and stop SOLR by: etc/init.d/solr stop But this didn't remove the java process from the "Top" command. Still java was eating 400% CPU. Is there other methods to restart java only? This has happened twice to me, and each time I have now restarted my entire servers and everithing is fine. If you need more input let me know! Thanks

  • Solr error; Anybody know what this means?

    I am installing solr on my VPS (Ubuntu 9.10) via PuTTY. First, I thought about installing Solr with Tomcat, but then after installing tomcat, I changed my mind and went for the Jetty which comes with Solr. Now that I have setup everything on my Server, and try to start the "start.jar" file, I get some errors...   • Need help troubleshooting why Solr wont start (or why solr admin page wont show)

    I can't get Solr working. I have Jetty, and my server OS is Ubuntu 9.10. It is a VPS server. So, when I execute the java -jar start.jar everything seems fine. I even do a netstat to check if there are any listeners on the port before the start and after the start, and it seems solr is starting. However, I cant access the admin page. I have even turned off the firewall. Here is some info about my server: I have changed DocumentRoot to var/www/SV/ I have Apache2, PHP5, MySql installed I have "disabled" iptables firewall I have removed the htaccess files (I used them to passw protect my site under develop) I have installed JRE (NOT JDK) on my server. I use the "example" which comes with Solr, so I use Jetty as container on my Server. My Server has 768MB RAM Doing a java -version command shows this: java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode) And in the terminal the last lines when executing start.jar is: May 29, 2010 1:30:03 PM org.apache.solr.core.SolrCore registerSearcher INFO: [] Registered new searcher Searcher@1dc64a5 main NOTE: Also before this last line, there is a line which makes me suspicious: Started SocketConnector @ 0.0.0.0:8983 // Should this be with leading zeros?
