• NDepend tool – Why every developer working with Visual Studio.NET must try it!

  In the past two months, I have had a chance to test the capabilities and features of the amazing NDepend tool designed to help you make your .NET code better, more beautiful and achieve high code quality. In other words, this tool will definitely help you harmonize your code. I mean, you’ve probably heard about Chaos Theory. Experienced developers and architects are already advocates of the programming chaos that happens when working with complex project architecture, the matrix of relationships between objects which simply even if you are the one who have written all that code, you know how hard is to visualize everything what does the code do. When the application get more and more complex, you will start missing a lot of details in your code… NDepend will help you visualize all the details on a clever way that will help you make smart moves to make your code better. The NDepend tool supports many features, such as: Code Query Language – which will help you write custom rules and query your own code! Imagine, you want to find all your methods which have more than 100 lines of code :)! That’s something simple! However, I will dig much deeper in one of my next blogs which I’m going to dedicate to the NDepend’s CQL (Code Query Language) Architecture Visualization – You are an architect and want to visualize your application’s architecture? I’m thinking how many architects will be really surprised from their architectures since NDepend shows your whole architecture showing each piece of it. NDepend will show you how your code is structured. It shows the architecture in graphs, but if you have very complex architecture, you can see it in Dependency Matrix which is more suited to display large architecture Code Metrics – Using NDepend’s panel, you can see the code base according to Code Metrics. You can do some additional filtering, like selecting the top code elements ordered by their current code metric value. You can use the CQL language for this purpose too. Smart Search – NDepend has great searching ability, which is again based on the CQL (Code Query Language). However, you have some options to search using dropdown lists and text boxes and it will generate the appropriate CQL code on fly. Moreover, you can modify the CQL code if you want it to fit some more advanced searching tasks. Compare Builds and Code Difference – NDepend will also help you compare previous versions of your code with the current one at one of the most clever ways I’ve seen till now. Create Custom Rules – using CQL you can create custom rules and let NDepend warn you on each build if you break a rule Reporting – NDepend can automatically generate reports with detailed stats, graph representation, dependency matrixes and some additional advanced reporting features that will simply explain you everything related to your application’s code, architecture and what you’ve done. And that’s not all. As I’ve seen, there are many other features that NDepend supports. I will dig more in the upcoming days and will blog more about it. The team who built the NDepend have also created good documentation, which you can find on the NDepend website. • Screen magnifier wrecks login screen — how to get rid of it?

  In the Ubuntu / GNOME login screen, I tried some of the different accessibility settings out of curiosity. Big mistake! Enabling the "use screen magnifier" (or whatever) option breaks down the view horribly, and makes it impossible to even access the settings again: (Right click & View Image for full size) Yes, I tried to access every corner of the screen using the mouse, but there's just chaos everywhere. Fortunately, I can still log in (pressing "Esc" makes the normal login dialog appear on the left-hand monitor). My question is, how to disable the "magnifier" option outside of the login screen itself? (By editing some config file perhaps?) I don't care about getting the magnifier mode to work properly - just make it go away altogether, please.

Most SCRUM resources I see focus on its use in a team environment, hence my question here. I'd like some guidance on structuring and managing my projects for SCRUM, with me as a solitary developer and business owner, but still occasionally including my clients for input and feedback. Areas I'm not clear on include resolving my backlog into 'sprintable' project areas and stories, defining user stories properly with a view to being digested by developer level users, defining feasible sprints for a single developer etc. Essentially I'm looking for advice on moving from using scrum in a team/office environment, with colleagues and project manager, and using chaos/cowboy-coding on my own, to assuming the role of PM myself and adopting scrum for work on my own. Any advice is welcome.

  I build a racing game right in OpenGL using Glut, and I'm a bit lost in all the details. First of all, any suggestions as a road map would be more than great. So far what I thought is this: Tree implementation for transformations. Simulated dynamics.(*) Octree implementation for collusion detection. Actual collusion detection.(*) Modelling in Maya and export them as .OBJs. Polishing the game with GLSL or something like that for graphics quality. (*): I am not sure the order of these two. So I started with the simulated dynamics without tree, and it turned out to be a huge chaos for me. Is there any way you can think of such that could help me to build such tree to use in racing game? • When is the best time to do self learning in relation with software management?

  It all started from here. I have been following Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art (Best Practices (Microsoft)). The third chapter says that in Software Management: You cannot give too much time to software developers, if you give it to them, then it is likely that extra time given to them will be filled by some other tasks (in other words, the developers will eat that time :)) Parkinson's Law You can also not squeeze the time from their schedule because if you do that, it is likely that they will develop poor quality product, poor design and will hurt you in the long run, there will be a panic situation and total chaos in the project, lots of rework etc. My question is related to the first point. If you don't give enough time then will the typical software engineer learn his/her skills? The market is always coming with new technologies, you need to learn them. Even with the existing familiar technologies there are always best practices and dos and don'ts.

Since I haven't had time to review Scrum project management tools in quite awhile, it was nice to find a write-up that's as succinct as this one. The thing I like the best about Bright Green's site, besides the product, is the vocabulary they use to describe Agile software development. For example, the couple Scrum with the development methodology they're using (Lean Kanban). Many organisations simply say they're using Scrum, which itself doesn't proscribe any engineering practices. It would add some clarity for teams to adopt the Scrum-Method terminology. At least then you could know if you're walking into a Scrum-Chaos situation.

• 11.10 had sound, 12.04 doesnt. Acer Aspire One D257

  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this same problem, because if so it might be worth while for me to file a bug, but it might also be chaos monkey so I wanted to check first. I have an Acer Aspire One D257 and the sound worked in 11.10 by default, but after doing a fresh install of 12.04 there is no sound. There used to be a speaker icon on the menu bar but now there isn't, and volume up and volume down hotkeys now do nothing, which leads me to believe it isn't detecting the sound card properly anymore. Googling for sound problems on an Acer Aspire One D257 on 12.04 isn't showing any helpful results, so I'm wondering if it's just me. Does anyone have an AAO D257 on 12.04 with the sound working, and if so did you have to do anything special to make it work?

• Using versioning for settings in home?

  I planned to use git for the important files in my home directory, so I can revert bad settings or transfer them to another computer as needed. But there's too much chaos there, with each program mixing wildly temporary files, caches, logs, backups, and everything. Finding anything worth saving is hard, and when I've found any settings done by myself, there were mixed with informations specific to the computer (so I could hardly take them to another one) and timestamps (so tracking useful changes is hard). Is anybody doing it or is it just hopeless? How to filter out the garbage?

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire. But my worry is still if I am going to lose control of the code quality using this approach? is it feasible to do so or it is going to turn this project to a chaos. • What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

• Does a person's day-to-day neatness (outside of programming) relate to quality and organization in programming?

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?
