  • final and private static

    - by xdevel2000
    I read that doing: public final void foo() {} is equals to: private static void foo() {} both meaning that the method is not overridable! But I don't see the equivalence if a method is private it's automatically not accessible...

  • Chuck Esterbrook: Geek of the Week

    The Cobra Programming Language is an exciting new general-purpose Open-source language for .NET or Mono, which features unit tests, contracts, informative asserts, generics, Compile-time nil/null tracking, lambda expressions, closures, list comprehensions and generators. Even if it had been developed by a team, it would have been a remarkable achievement. The surprise is that it is the work of one programmer with help from a group of users. We sent Richard to find out more about that one progra...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Do the ‘up to date’ guarantees for values of Java's final fields extend to indirect references?

    - by mattbh
    The Java language spec defines semantics of final fields in section 17.5: The usage model for final fields is a simple one. Set the final fields for an object in that object's constructor. Do not write a reference to the object being constructed in a place where another thread can see it before the object's constructor is finished. If this is followed, then when the object is seen by another thread, that thread will always see the correctly constructed version of that object's final fields. It will also see versions of any object or array referenced by those final fields that are at least as up-to-date as the final fields are. My question is - does the 'up-to-date' guarantee extend to the contents of nested arrays, and nested objects? An example scenario: Thread A constructs a HashMap of ArrayLists, then assigns the HashMap to final field 'myFinal' in an instance of class 'MyClass' Thread B sees a (non-synchronized) reference to the MyClass instance and reads 'myFinal', and accesses and reads the contents of one of the ArrayLists In this scenario, are the members of the ArrayList as seen by Thread B guaranteed to be at least as up to date as they were when MyClass's constructor completed? I'm looking for clarification of the semantics of the Java Memory Model and language spec, rather than alternative solutions like synchronization. My dream answer would be a yes or no, with a reference to the relevant text.

  • Do the 'up to date' guarantees provided by final field in Java's memory model extend to indirect ref

  • Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

    - by Nicolas Repiquet
    After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ? EDIT This great article explains my concerns far better than I can.

  • Fix Problems Upgrading Office 2010 Beta to RTM (Final) Release

    - by Mysticgeek
    There are several scenarios where you may run into trouble uninstalling the 2010 Beta and trying to install the RTM (final) release. Today we’ll cover the problems we ran into, and how to fix them. You would think upgrading from the Office 2010 Beta to the final release would be an easy process. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. In fact, we ran into three different scenarios where the install wasn’t smooth whatsoever. If you currently have the 2010 Beta installed, you have to remove it before you can install the RTM.  Here we’ll take a look at three different troublesome install scenarios we ran into, and how we fixed each one. Important Note: Before proceeding with any of these steps, make sure and backup your Outlook .pst files! Scenario 1 – Uninstall Office 2010 Beta & Fix Install Errors In this first scenario we have Office Professional Plus 2010 Beta 32-bit installed on a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit system. First try to uninstall the Office 2010 Beta by going into Control Panel and selecting Programs and Features. Scroll down to Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, right-click it and select Uninstall. Click Yes when the confirmation dialog box comes up. Wait while Office 2010 Beta uninstalls…the amount of time it takes will vary from system to system. To complete the uninstall process, a reboot is required. Fixing Setup Errors The problem is when you start the installation of the 2010 RTM… You get the following setup error even though you uninstalled the 2010 Beta. The problem is there are leftover Office apps or stand alone Office products. So, we need a utility that will clean them up for us.   Windows Installer Clean Up Utility Download and install the Clean Up Utility (link Below) following the defaults. After it’s installed you’ll find it in Start \ All Programs \ Windows Install Clean Up …go ahead and launch the utility. Now go through and remove all Office Programs or addins that you find in the list. Make sure you are just deleting Office apps and not something you need like Java for example. If you’re not sure what something is, doing a quick Google search should help you out. For instance we had the Office labs Ribbon Hero installed… just highlight and click Remove. Remove anything that has something to do with Office…then reboot your machine. Now, you should be able to begin the installation of Office 2010 RTM (Final) Release without any errors. If you do get an error during the install process, like this one telling us we have old version of Groove Server… Navigate to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft (where username is the computer name) and delete any existing MS Office folders. Then try the install again, this solved the problem in our first scenario. Scenario 2 – Not Being Able to Uninstall 2010 Beta from Programs and Features In this next scenario we have Office Professional Plus 2010 Beta 32-bit installed on a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit system. Another problem we ran into is not being able to uninstall the 2010 Beta from Programs and Features. When you go in to uninstall it, nothing happens. If you run into this problem, we again need to download and install the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility (link below) and manually uninstall the Beta. When you launch it, scroll down to Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 (Beta), highlight it and click Remove.   Click OK to the Warning Dialog box… If you see any other Office 2010, 2007, or 2003 entries you can hold the “Shift” key and highlight them all…then click Remove and click OK to the warning dialog. Now we need to delete some Registry settings. Click on Start and type regedit into the Search box and hit Enter. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office and delete the folder. Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office and delete those keys as well. Now go into C:\Program Files and find any of these three folders…Microsoft Office, OfficeUpdate, or OfficeUpdate14…you might find one, two or all three. Either way just rename the folders with “_OLD” (without quotes) at the end. Then go into C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft and delete any existing MS Office folders. Where in this example we have office, Office Labs, One Note…etc. Now we want to delete the contents of the Temp folder. Click on Start and type %temp% into the Search box and hit Enter. Use the key combination “Ctrl+A” to select all the files in this folder, then right-click and click Delete, or simply hit the Delete key. If you have some files that won’t delete, just skip them as they shouldn’t affect the Office install. Then empty the Recycle Bin and restart your machine. When you get back from the restart launch the Office 2010 RTM installer and you should be good to go with installation. Because we uninstalled the Office 2010 Beta manually, you may have some lingering blank icons that you’ll need to clean up. Scenario –3 Uninstall 2007 and Install 2010 32-Bit on x64 Windows 7 For this final scenario we are uninstalling Office Professional 2007 and installing Office Professional Plus 2010 32-Bit edition on a Windows Ultimate 64-bit computer. This machine actually had Office 2010 Beta 64-bit installed at one point also, it’s since been removed, and 2007 was reinstalled.  Go into Programs and Settings and uninstall Microsoft Office Professional 2007. Click Yes to the dialog box asking if you’re sure you want to uninstall it… Then wait while Office 2007 is uninstalled. The amount of time it takes will vary between systems. A restart is required to complete the process… Again we need to call upon the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility. Go through and delete any left over Office 2007 and 2010 entries. Click OK to the warning dialog that comes up. After that’s complete, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office and delete the folder. Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office and delete those keys as well. We still need to go into C:\Users\ username\AppData\ Local\ Microsoft (where username is the computer name) and delete any Office folders. In this example we have Outlook Connector, Office, and Outlook to delete. Now let’s delete the contents of the Temp folder by typing %temp% into the Search box in the Start Menu. Then delete all of the files and folders in the Temp directory. If you have some files that won’t delete, just skip them as they shouldn’t affect the Office install. Then empty the Recycle Bin and restart your machine. If you try to install the 2010 RTM at this point you might be able to begin the install, but may get the following Error 1402 message. To solve this issue, we opened the command prompt and ran the following: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose After the command completes, kick off the Office 2010 (Final) RTM 32-bit edition. This solved the issue and Office 2010 installed successfully.   Conclusion Except for the final scenario, we found using the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility to come in very handy. Using that along with deleting a couple folders and registry settings did the trick. In the last one, we had to get a bit more geeky and use some command line magic, but it got the job done. After some extensive testing in our labs, the only time the upgrade to the RTM went smoothly was when we had a clean Vista or Windows 7 system with a fresh install of the 2010 beta only. However, chances are you went from 2003 or 2007 to the free 2010 Beta. You might also have addins or other Office products installed, so there are going to be a lot of different office files scattered throughout your PC. If that’s the case, you may run into the issues we covered here. These are a few scenarios where we got errors and were not able to install Office 2010 after removing the beta. There could be other problems, and if any of you have experienced different issues or have more good suggestions, leave a comment and let us know! • How to Import flip video to Final Cut Pro and edit flip video in Final Cut Pro?

    - by Yinahd
    Final Cut Pro is a professional video editing application for Mac users and it is widely used even by many Hollywood people on professional movie post-production. If you are a flip video fan and you want to give professional editing to your flip videos, Final Cut Pro is a great choice. However, Final Cut Pro does not allow raw flip videos to be imported to Final Cut Pro and you will need to convert flip video to Final Cut Pro supported formats.

  • Can someone help me with this Java Chess game please?

    - by Chris Edwards
    Hey guys, Please can someone have a look at this code and let me know whether I am on the right track with the "check_somefigure_move"s and the "check_black/white_promotion"s please? And also any other help you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! P.S. I know the code is not the best implementation, but its a template I have to follow :( Code: class Moves { private final Board B; private boolean regular; public Moves(final Board b) { B = b; regular = regular_position(); } public boolean get_regular_position() { return regular; } public void set_regular_position(final boolean new_reg) { regular = new_reg; } // checking whether B represents a "normal" position or not; // if not, then only simple checks regarding move-correctness should // be performed, only checking the direct characteristics of the figure // moved; // checks whether there is exactly one king of each colour, there are // no more figures than promotions allow, and there are no pawns on the // first or last rank; public boolean regular_position() { int[] counts = new int[256]; for (char file = 'a'; file <= 'h'; ++file) for (char rank = '1'; rank <= '8'; ++rank) ++counts[(int) B.get(file,rank)]; if (counts[Board.white_king] != 1 || counts[Board.black_king] != 1) return false; if (counts[Board.white_pawn] > 8 || counts[Board.black_pawn] > 8) return false; int count_w_promotions = 0; count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_queen]-1,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_rook]-2,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_bishop]-2,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_knight]-2,0); if (count_w_promotions > 8 - counts[Board.white_pawn]) return false; int count_b_promotions = 0; count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_queen]-1,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_rook]-2,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_bishop]-2,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_knight]-2,0); if (count_b_promotions > 8 - counts[Board.black_pawn]) return false; for (char file = 'a'; file <= 'h'; ++file) { final char fig1 = B.get(file,'1'); if (fig1 == Board.white_pawn || fig1 == Board.black_pawn) return false; final char fig8 = B.get(file,'8'); if (fig8 == Board.white_pawn || fig8 == Board.black_pawn) return false; } return true; } public boolean check_normal_white_move(final char file0, final char rank0, final char file1, final char rank1) { if (!   • In Java, can a final field be initialized from a constructor helper?

    - by csj
    I have a final non-static member: private final HashMap<String,String> myMap; I would like to initialize it using a method called by the constructor. Since myMap is final, my "helper" method is unable to initialize it directly. Of course I have options: I could implement the myMap initialization code directly in the constructor. MyConstructor (String someThingNecessary) { myMap = new HashMap<String,String>(); myMap.put("blah","blahblah"); // etc... // other initialization stuff unrelated to myMap } I could have my helper method build the HashMap, return it to the constructor, and have the constructor then assign the object to myMap. MyConstructor (String someThingNecessary) { myMap = InitializeMyMap(someThingNecessary); // other initialization stuff unrelated to myMap } private HashMap<String,String> InitializeMyMap(String someThingNecessary) { HashMap<String,String> initializedMap = new HashMap<String,String>(); initializedMap.put("blah","blahblah"); // etc... return initializedMap; } Method #2 is fine, however, I'm wondering if there's some way I could allow the helper method to directly manipulate myMap. Perhaps a modifier that indicates it can only be called by the constructor? MyConstructor (String someThingNecessary) { InitializeMyMap(someThingNecessary); // other initialization stuff unrelated to myMap } // helper doesn't work since it can't modify a final member private void InitializeMyMap(String someThingNecessary) { myMap = new HashMap<String,String>(); myMap.put("blah","blahblah"); // etc... }

  • When and why does an EventHandler require objects to be final?

    - by Michiel Borkent
    I have the following code from a GWT Project that is part of the onModuleLoad() method (similar to Java's main method, if you don't know GWT): final TextBox t1 = new TextBox(); final Label lt1 = new Label(); t1.addKeyUpHandler(new KeyUpHandler() { @Override public void onKeyUp(KeyUpEvent event) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub if (!(t1.getText().matches("\\w{2}-\\w{2}-\\w{2}"))) lt1.setText("Invalid."); else lt1.setText("OK."); } }); Why do the two local variables have to be final here?

  • Project Coin: JSR 334 has a Proposed Final Draft

    - by darcy
    Reaching nearly the last phase of the JCP process, JSR 334 now has a proposed final draft. There have been only a few refinements to the specification since public review: Incorporated language changes into JLS proper. Forbid combining diamond and explicit type arguments to a generic constructor. Removed unusual protocol around Throwable.addSuppressed(null) and added a new constructor to Throwable to allow suppression to be disabled. Added disclaimers that OutOfMemoryError, NullPointerException, and ArithmeticException objects created by the JVM may have suppression disabled. Added thread safely requirements to Throwable.addSuppressed and Throwable.getSuppressed. Next up is the final approval ballot; almost there!

  • Android Application for Final Year Project [closed]

    - by user1070241
    I hope this is the right place to post this question. Basically, I'm about to choose a Final Year Project for my third and final year in BSc Computer Science. I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general. However, my question is this, how do you think an Android based project would go down with potential employers? I personally don't think the complexity of this project is lower than other projects proposed by my university. Please let me know what you think, and do share any experiences that you have had with this, if any. Thank you very much.

  • ACORD LOMA 2010: Building Insurance Companies in the Clouds

    - by [email protected]
    Chuck Johnston, vice president of global strategy and alliances for Oracle Insurance, participated in a featured speaking session at ACORD LOMA 2010. He provides an update on his discussions with insurers at the show and after his presentation. Every year I always make a point of walking the show floor at the ACORD LOMA technology conference to visit with colleagues and competitors, and try to get a feel for which way the industry will move over the next 12 months. Insurers are looking for substance in cloud (computing), trying to mix business with pleasure (monetizing social networks), and expect differentiation through commodity (Software as a Service). The disconnect at this show is that most vendors are still struggling with creating a clear path from Facebook to customer intimacy, SaaS to core cost savings and clouds to ubiquitous presence. Vendors need to find new ways to help insurers find the real value in these potentially disruptive technologies by understanding the changes coming to the insurance business and how these new technologies impact the new insurance business. Oracle's approach to understanding the evolving insurance industry comes from a discussion with our customers in our Insurance CIO Council, where one of our customers suggested we buy an insurance company to really understand our customers. We have decided to do the next best thing and build our own model of an insurance company, Alamere Insurance, that uses the latest technologies to transform its own business. Alamere will never issue an actual policy, but it does give us a framework to consider the impacts of changes in the insurance landscape and how Oracle technology meets the challenge or needs to evolve to help our customers be successful. In preparing for my talk at the conference using Alamere as my organizing theme, I found myself reading actuarial memoranda on CSO table changes and articles on underwriting theory that really made me think about my customer's problems first and foremost, and then how Oracle technology can provide answers. As much as I prefer techno-thrillers and sci-fi novels to actuarial papers for plane reading, I got very excited about the idea of putting myself back in the customer shoes I haven't worn in a decade, and really looking at how Oracle can power the Adaptive Insurance Enterprise. Talking to customers and industry people after the session, the idea of Alamere seemed to excite people and I got a lot of suggestions as to what lines of business we should model and where we should focus first on technology uptake. One customer said to a colleague that Oracle's attempt to "share their pain" was unique among vendors. More about Alamere, and the Adaptive Insurance Enterprise next time. Chuck Johnston is vice president of global strategy and alliances for Oracle Insurance.

  • What is the effect of final variable declaration in methods?

    - by Finbarr
    Classic example of a simple server: class ThreadPerTaskSocketServer { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { ServerSocket socket = new ServerSocket(80); while (true) { final Socket connection = socket.accept(); Runnable task = new Runnable() { public void run() { handleRequest(connection); } }; new Thread(task).start(); } } } Why should the Socket be declared as final? Is it because the new Thread that handles the request could refer back to the socket variable in the method and cause some sort of ConcurrentModificationException?

  • Android SQLiteConstraintException: error code 19: constraint failed

    - by Tom D
    I've seen other questions about this exception, but all of them seem to be resolved with the solution that a row with the primary key specified already exists. This doesn't seem to be the case for me. I have tried replacing all single quotes in my strings with double quotes, but the same problem occurs. I'm trying to insert a row into the Settings table of the SQLite database I've created by doing the following: db.execSQL("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS "+Settings.SETTINGS_TABLE_NAME + ";"); db.execSQL(CREATE_MEDIA_TABLE); db.execSQL(CREATE_SETTINGS_TABLE); Cursor c = getAllSettings(); //If there isn't already a settings row, create a row full of defaults if(c.getCount()==0){ ContentValues cv = new ContentValues(); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_UNIQUE_ID, "'"+Settings.uniqueID+"'"); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_DEVICE_ID, Settings.SETTING_DEVICE_ID_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_CONNECTION_PREFERENCE, Settings.SETTING_CONNECTION_PREFERENCE_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_AD_HOC_ENABLED, Settings.SETTING_AD_HOC_ENABLED_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_SERVER_ADDRESS, Settings.SETTING_SERVER_ADDRESS_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_RECORDING_MODE, Settings.SETTING_RECORDING_MODE_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_PREVIEW_ENABLED, Settings.SETTING_PREVIEW_ENABLED_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_X, Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_X_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_Y, Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_Y_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_X, Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_X_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_Y, Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_Y_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_FPS, Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_FPS_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_AUDIO_BITRATE_KBPS, Settings.SETTING_AUDIO_BITRATE_KBPS_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_STORE_TO_SD, Settings.SETTING_STORE_TO_SD_DEFAULT); cv.put(Settings.SETTING_STORAGE_LIMIT_MB, Settings.SETTING_STORAGE_LIMIT_MB_DEFAULT); this.db.insert(Settings.SETTINGS_TABLE_NAME, null, cv); } The CREATE_SETTINGS_TABLE string is defined as the following: private static String CREATE_SETTINGS_TABLE = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS " + Settings.SETTINGS_TABLE_NAME + "(" + Settings.SETTING_UNIQUE_ID + " TEXT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, " + Settings.SETTING_DEVICE_ID + " TEXT NOT NULL , " + Settings.SETTING_CONNECTION_PREFERENCE + " TEXT NOT NULL CHECK("+Settings.SETTING_CONNECTION_PREFERENCE+" IN("+Settings.SETTING_CONNECTION_PREFERENCE_ALLOWED+")), " + Settings.SETTING_AD_HOC_ENABLED + " TEXT NOT NULL CHECK("+Settings.SETTING_AD_HOC_ENABLED+" IN("+Settings.SETTING_AD_HOC_ENABLED_ALLOWED+")), " + Settings.SETTING_SERVER_ADDRESS + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_RECORDING_MODE + " TEXT NOT NULL CHECK("+Settings.SETTING_RECORDING_MODE+" IN("+Settings.SETTING_RECORDING_MODE_ALLOWED+")), " + Settings.SETTING_PREVIEW_ENABLED + " TEXT NOT NULL CHECK("+Settings.SETTING_PREVIEW_ENABLED+" IN("+Settings.SETTING_PREVIEW_ENABLED_ALLOWED+")), " + Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_X + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_PICTURE_RESOLUTION_Y + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_X + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_RESOLUTION_Y + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_VIDEO_FPS + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_AUDIO_BITRATE_KBPS + " TEXT NOT NULL, " + Settings.SETTING_STORE_TO_SD + " TEXT NOT NULL CHECK("+Settings.SETTING_STORE_TO_SD+" IN("+Settings.SETTING_STORE_TO_SD_ALLOWED+")), " + Settings.SETTING_STORAGE_LIMIT_MB + " TEXT NOT NULL )"; However, when I execute my insert, I always get: 03-19 19:37:36.974: ERROR/Database(386): Error inserting server_address='0.0.0.0' storage_limit='-1' connection='none' preview_enabled='0' sd_enabled='1' video_fps='15' audio_bitrate='96' device_id='-1' recording_mode='none' picture_resolution_x='-1' picture_resolution_y='-1' unique_id='000000000000000' adhoc_enable='0' video_resolution_x='320' video_resolution_y='240' 03-19 19:45:34.284: ERROR/Database(446): android.database.sqlite.SQLiteConstraintException: error code 19: constraint failed It seems as if all the columns in my insert are not null.
