Eric’s talk focused mostly on unit testing, and that the lack of proper unit testing can be compared to stealing from an employer. His point was that if you’re not doing proper unit testing then all of the time wasted on fixing issues that could have been detected with unit tests is like stealing money from employer. He makes the assumption that that time spent on fixing these issues could have been better spent developing new features that drive the business. To a point I can agree with Eric’s argument regarding unit testing and stealing from a company’s perspective. I can see how he relates resources being shifted from new development to bug fixes as stealing based on the fact that the resources used to fix bugs are directly taken from other projects. He also states that Boring/Redundant and Build/Test tasks should be automated because it reduces the changes of errors and frees up developer to do what they do best, DEVELOP! When he refers to testing, he breaks testing down in to four distinct types. Unit Test Acceptance Test (This also includes Integration Tests) Performance Test UI Test With this he also recommends that developers should not go buck wild striving for 100% code coverage because some test my not provide a great return on investment. In his experience he recommends that 70% test coverage was a very acceptable rate.

  • Learn Domain-Driven Design

    I just wrote about how I like to present on unfamiliar topics. With this said, Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is no exception. This is yet another area I knew enough about to be dangerous but I certainly was no expert.  As it turns out, researching this topic wasn’t easy. I could be wrong, but it is as if DDD is a secret to which few are privy.   • Is is good or bad to have the email address of a domain's registrant on the same domain?

    Say I own domain abc.com. I think it's a bad idea to use [email protected] as the registrant's (myself) email address. This will cause problems when I need to transfer the domain to another registrar e.g. GoDaddy. The new registrar will then try to send email to [email protected] which is unlikely to function normally since the DNS settings are undergoing changes. So I believe it's best to use email address independent from the domains I own as the registrant's email address. (Isn't it the practice Google Apps is using?) Have I missed something here or am I right?

    I intend to pull together a FREE eBook on the Windows Azure Platform – but I need your help to make it rock! If you have detailed experience of any aspect of the Windows Azure Platform and can spare a few hours of time to turn that into a short article (400 to 800 words) then please get in touch. This is not a big commitment but my suspicion is the end result will make for a cracking good read. I am hoping for a mix – everything from lessons learnt from early adopters to introductions to elements of the platform to getting technologies such as Ruby up and running on Azure. 10 to 20 articles sound about right – which means I am after 10 to 20 authors :) All I need from you right now is: One or two suggestions of topics you would like to cover A pointer to any example of your previous work – which could be as simple as a blog post or a work document.   • How do I connect my NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express in y Dell latitude d630?

    Trying to get my 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) working with my wifi. I just installed Raring Ringtail on this dell latitude D630 and I can't get it to connect without a wifi dongle.   • Taking advantage of an "Intel Turbo Memory" card for swap or fast bootup

    I have an X61 thinkpad (currently running 10.10) that I purchased 3 years ago. I splurged a little and got a Turbo Memory expansion to improve my windows boots. When I installed 10.04 (and subsquently upgraded to 10.10) there was no Turbo Memory support and there's an awful lot of noise on searches. 1) Is there any support for Intel Turbo Memory in 11.04 or trivially compilable into the kernel as swap, suspend, hibernate point, or boot partition? 2) If there is, should I bother trying to use it?

  • Launchd item no longer firing in Snow Leopard

    A launchd item that was working in 10.5 is no longer working after my upgrade to 10.6. I am running 10.6.2 and I have recreated the launchd item and given it a new name and that one doesn't run either. I have found a link of people with the same problem on google groups but none of the advice in that link helps. My launchd item is not listed in /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist or in any of the overrides.plist files in the subdirectories of /private/var/db/launchd.db/ I have also tried to set this up as both a user agent and a user daemon. My launchd item simply runs a shell script, which I have no problem launching manually. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>com.eric.tmnotify.launchd</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/<path_to>/tmnotify.sh</string> </array> <key>StartInterval</key> <integer>3600</integer> </dict> </plist> I have tried to load it by overriding the disabled key (even though it is not disabled in any of the overrides.plist files) with both: sudo launchctl load -F /Users/eric/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eric.tmnotify.launchd.plist sudo launchctl load -w /Users/eric/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eric.tmnotify.launchd.plist and after running either of them I can see that it is running by using sudo launchctl list but the shell script never fires. Edit: I have also put this in the formerly blank file at /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.501/overrides.plist : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>com.eric.tmnotify.launchd</key> <dict> <key>Disabled</key> <false/> </dict> </dict> </plist> I also tried inserting this alphabetically: <key>com.eric.tmnotify.launchd</key> <dict> <key>Disabled</key> <false/> </dict> into the file /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist but still no dice.

  • Unity Dashboard won't find local files, rearrange icons on two computers

    Suddenly I can't move icons around my unity launcher and the Dash won't search for my local files and folders. Was working when I first installed 13.10, but now it won't search for local files, and it won't let me rearrange the icons in any way. I've tried turning on and off all the scopes (lenses?) in multiple combinations, but it won't find any files unless I use nautilus to find them its mostly unresponsive. I can't see my recently used files, or files and folders scope at all. Dragging and dropping the icons on the side dock doesn't work, they only stick to my mouse until I put them back where they were. I cannot unlock any icons from the launcher, it just doesn't do anything when I click it. I tried rebooting both of my computers and its still won't function normally. I used ubuntu-bug -w to report a bug, no one has gotten back to me. Is there some option that I changed to cause this? This is a problem on both my laptop and Desktop. Please Help, Alex

    I've been trying to install World of Warcraft with no luck.   • Trying to turn an old computer into a server. Where do I start?

    My old computer is a mac powerbook g4 that I am considering turning into an Ubuntu Server for my house of eight to share movies and music and whatever. I've never even thought about doing this kind of stuff before so I don't even know where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction? My Concerns: Most of my house mates have macs. Will there be compatibility issues? Can I make it a wireless network? My old powerbook g4 might not have the balls. Money Thanks!

  • Menus and text boxes look graphically corrupted in 12.10

    If I let my computer run long enough the screen gets glitchy or graphically corrupted only in certain areas i.e. in text related boxes, menus, menu bars, scroll bars, the system monitor window, etc. It becomes difficult to read what I am typing. Its been happening quite often and I can only fix it by restarting the computer, but its only a matter of time before it happens again. Don't know what else to do, its been a thorn in my side for quite some time now and I need a fix soon because its only gets more frequent until I'm rebooting my computer five times a day.     Trying to get my 03:03.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) working. I just reformated and installed 12.04 on this old Windows XP machine, and I don't know where to get the firmware for this.
