  • How to fix broken IIS on Windows 7

    how can I fix broken IIS on Windows 7 ? Deinstalling it via "Windows Features" doesn't help. Apparently it doesn't uninstall IIS completely so on my subsequent attempts to install it installer hangs and I can see in Process Explorer that it keeps trying to launch svchost.exe -iis for 10 mins and then gives me error message. Reinstalling whole Windows with all apps would take me another 3 days :/ Please help.

  • Webfarm and IIS configuration tips/tricks

    I was recently talking with some good friends about tips for performance and what an IIS Administrator could do on the server side.  I also see this question from time to time in the forums @ http://forums.iis.net.    Of course, you should test individual settings in a controlled environment while performing load testing before just implementing on your production farm.  IIS Compression enabled (both static and dynamic if possible, set it to 9)  If you are running IIS 6, check this article out by Scott Forsyth. Run FRT for long running pages (Failed Request Tracing) Sql Connection pooling in code Look at using PAL with performance counters ( http://blogs.iis.net/ganekar/archive/2009/08/12/pal-performance-analyzer-with-iis.aspx )  Look at load testing using visual studio load testing tools Log parser finding long running pages.  Here is a couple examples Look at CPU, Memory and disk counters.  Make sure the server has enough resources. Same machineKey account across all same nodes Localize content vs. using UNC based content on a single server (My UNC tag with great posts) Content expiration ETAG’s the same across all web-farms Disable Scalable Networking Pack Use YSlow or Developer tools in Chrome to help measure the client experience improvements.   • How to find and fix issue with Pound and HAProxy

    Pound sits in front of HAProxy (on the same box) to perform SSL off-load. Requests are passed to 127.0.0.1:80 where HAProxy then balances the requests across backend servers for a hosted ASP .NET web app. A user is getting HTTP error 500 (Internal Server Error) returned to their browser this morning and I can see it is comming from Pound. They see no log entry in their web app (IIS) server logs, so its not hitting the back end servers. I think the problem is possibly with HAProxy.   • Remove all HTTP bindings from an IIS 6 site while leaving SSL bindings

    We have a (remote, via a reseller) customer who configured their IIS6 server to not have any port 80 HTTP bindings, only port 443 SSL bindings. We would like to reproduce this without going through the three layers (!) to get to the customer to test some error scenerios. However, whenever I try to get IIS to not listen on IIS at all, I can't do it. If I do it in the UI, either leaving in the main properties page, or in the advanced bindings page, the UI does not let me proceed. If I remove the HTTP ServerBindings from the metabase.xml directly, IIS makes it port 80, all unassigned addresses anyway. Is there a way to get to the "SSL only" state naturally? Please note I am NOT talking about the "require SSL" checkbox or underlying metabase setting, as that still listens on port 80 (or whatever) to give the "SSL required" error message. I'm talking about not having any bindings listed at all for HTTP.

    If I install IIS with Application Development Features - ASP.NET (or installing IIS first and adding ASP.NET later on). It's giving me the dreaded error: An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed. I tried uninstalling WAS. I uninstalled and reinstalled .NET 3.5.1. I repaird .NET 4.0 If I install IIS without that feature, then it would let me. Any suggestions?! Is this the correct place to ask this question?

    Hey Everyone, I have a lot of time information in the format of hh:mm and I was wondering if there is a good way to take this information and compare it to the current time. Say I have a list of times for a day and I want to find out which time in this array of strings is the first that has not already past in this day. I was looking at the Calender API and I figured I could break the strings up into hours and minutes by splitting it at the ":" and then create a calender object from that but that seems rather inefficient.   • How to disable server-side caching on IIS 7.5 (asp net mvc3)

    I'm struggling with my IIS setup regarding caching, here's a brief description of my problem: I'm making a site for mobile and non-mobile, sharing the same controllers. IE: mysite/page will serve either mysite/page.cshtml, or mysite/M/page.cshtml, depending on the device. Here's the catch, it worked fine with my local and integration environment (cassiini and iis 6), but on another machine (2008r2/iis 7.5), apparently there is an aggressive server-side caching policy: If I access the website from a desktop machine, I have the correct pages (desktop version) If now I use my mobile phone to access the site, I will have the desktop version, (which implies a server-side cache, my phone is not using the same network). On the contrary, if I were to restart the server and access the site using my phone first, then I will get the mobile version on my desktop (only for the pages I already visited of course). I tried 2 solutions so far: Disabling OutputCache from my Web.config: <httpModules> [..] <remove name="OutputCache" /> </httpModules> And unchecking "Enable output cache" in "Output Caching" for my site in IIS. What's bugging me is that I do not have this problem with my other server (iis 6.0), although caching is enabled on this one, which leads me to think it is related to iis 7 caching addition. My question is simple: how does one disable server-side caching on IIS 7.5? Thanks in advance for your iis lights!

  • IIS Manager - Connect to Another Server (Win7 to Win2008 server)

    I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. If I open up IIS Manager, I see a list of "connections" on the left hand side. In previous versions, I would be able to select an option to "connect to another server" or "connect to another machine", but there is no such option visible anywhere here. The only thing in the list is my local machine. Even in the address bar, if I manually type in the server location (\servername, even tried just servername), nothing happens (it just reverts back to my current local computer) The documentation at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732466%28WS.10%29.aspx seems to imply the very same steps... but there is just no button or menu option anywhere to do this. Am I missing something? I'm not even seeing a grayed out menu option. EDIT: Under the "File" menu, I see 2 options: Save Connections (grayed out) Exit Under the "Connections" pane, I see 1 button, grayed out. When I hover the mouse, it simply says "Up", appears to be usable if I browse into an element in my local computers IIS settings If I right click inside the pane itself, I see Refresh Add website (to the current host) Start Stop Rename Switch to Content View UPDATE: I downloaded and installed the Remote Server Administration tools from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7D2F6AD7-656B-4313-A005-4E344E43997D&displaylang=en, and I enabled everything listed under "Remote Server Administration Tools" under "Turn Windows Features On or Off". Still nothing.

  • Import IIS6 website configuration into IIS7

    Hello, I have many websites hosted on IIS6 and I want to migrate them to IIS7. It is enough if the basic configuration (folder, virtual folders inside, hostheaders, ) is migrated. a great part of the configuration is in web.config anyway. It is even okay if they're just created as "classic" mode applications. I have tried the following things: Msdeploy. This copies the whole directoried though, not good... Tried exporting the iis websites to xml... Found nothing to give them to iis7... Anybody got an idea?

    Today is the first day of the SQLPASS 2012 and I will be soon posting SQL Server 2012 experience over here. Today when I landed in Seattle, I got the nostalgia feeling. I used to stay in the USA. I stayed here for more than 7 years – I studied here and I worked in USA. I had lots of friends in Seattle when I used to stay in the USA. I always wanted to visit Seattle because it is THE place. I remember once I purchased a ticket to travel to Seattle through Priceline (well it was the cheapest option and I was a student) but could not fly because of an interesting issue. I used to be Teaching Assistant of an advanced course and the professor asked me to build a pop-quiz for the course. I unfortunately had to cancel the trip. Before I returned to India – I pretty much covered every city existed in my list to must visit, except one – Seattle. It was so interesting that I never made it to Seattle even though I wanted to visit, when I was in USA. After that one time I never got a chance to travel to Seattle. After a few years I also returned to India for good. Once on Television I saw “Sleepless in Seattle” movie playing and I immediately changed the channel as it reminded me that I never made it to Seattle before. However, destiny has its own way to handle decisions. After I returned to India – I visited Seattle total of 5 times and this is my 6th visit to Seattle in less than 3 years. I was here for 3 previous SQLPASS events – 2009, 2010, and 2011 as well two Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Summit in 2009 and 2010. During these five trips I tried to catch up with all of my all friends but I realize that time has its own way of doing things. Many moved out of Seattle and many were too busy revive the old friendship but there were few who always make a point to meet me when I travel to the city. During the course of my visits I have made few fantastic new friends – Rick Morelan (Joes 2 Pros) and Greg Lynch. Every time I meet them I feel that I know them for years. I think city of Seattle has played very important part in our relationship that I got these fantastic friends. SQLPASS is the event where I find all of my SQL Friends and I look for this event for an entire year. This year’s my goal is to meet as many as new friends I can meet.   • WPF, TreeView bug, can't select root item after item removed from treeview

    I have a very weird bug in a three level deep TreeView. It is intermittent and I can't find how to reproduce it consistently. After programmatically removing, adding then removing some third level items, when I click on the root item it isn't selected. It can still expand/collapse but can't be selected with a mouse click and it doesn't fire ItemSelectionChange event. You can click to select a second level or third level items and after that you're finally able to select the root item. I've tried to set IsSelected = false for all items after removing and tried to do a nice clean-up when removing items but it doesn't help. Did anybody run into that bug? Do you have any suggestions to remove this bug?

  • How To Attach Visual Studio 2010 To IIS Process Running On Windows 7

    Debugging ASP.NET application hosted on IIS 7 running of Windows 7 using Visual Studio 2010 is a bit different from debugging applications hosted on IIS running on Windows XP. The key differences are Visual Studio 2010 demands for administrator mode and IIS runs under the process name w3wp.exe instead of aspnet_wp.exe. Here are the detailed steps to attach Visual Studio 2010 debugger to IIS 7 on Windows 7. 1. Launch Visual Studio 2010 in Administrator mode(right click on Visual Studio Icon and choose the option Run as Administrator) 2. Open source code the site you want to debug 3. Go to Tools -> Attach to Process.; Opens up Attach to Process.  4.  In Attach to Process dialog box, check the option Show process in all sessions. 5. Search for the process w3wp.exe, and click on Attach button. 6. Accept the warning messages. That’s is you are done. Visual Studio is now attached with IIS for debugging. Happy coding.   • NCurses, scrolling of multiline items, "current item" pointer and "selected items"

    I am looking for hints/ideas for the best (most effective) way on how to scroll multi-line items as well as emphasizing of the "current item" and "selected items" such as: 1 FOO ITEM 1 Foo sub-item 2 Foo sub-item 3 Foo sub-item 2 BAR ITEM 1 Bar sub-item 3 BAZ ITEM 1 Baz sub-item 2 Baz sub-item 4 RAB ITEM 5 ZZZ ITEM 1 Zzz sub-item 2 Zzz sub-item 3 Zzz sub-item 4 Zzz sub-item using NCurses (some combination of windows, sub-windows, pads, copywin? Uff! In fact, the lines could exceed the stdscr's width so that possibility to scroll left/right would be also nice - pads?)... The whole items (including the sub-items) are supposed to be emphasized as full-width window/pad areas. The "current item" (including it's set of lines) should be emphasized (i.e. using A_BOLD), selected set of items of choice (including the set of lines for each the selected item) should be emphasized in another way (i.e. using A_REVERSE). What would you choose to cope with it the most effective NCurses way? (The less redrawals/refreshes the better and terminal is supposed to have the ability to change it's size - such as XTerm running under "floating window" management.) Thank you for your ideas (or perhaps some piece of code where something similar is already solved - I was not able to find anything helpful on the Internet. I mean I am not going to copy/paste foreign code but programming NCurses properly is still somehow difficult to me). P.S.: Would you suggest to "smooth-scroll" +1/-1 screen line or rather "jump-scroll" +lines/-lines of the items? (I personally prefer the latter one.) Sincerely, -- mjf
