• Error when connecting to AS400 (ISeries)

  I'm trying to connect to a AS400 server using the .net classes. I have added a reference to IBM.Data.DB.iSeries and I use the following code: var conn = new iDB2Connection("DataSource=111.111.111.111;UserID=xxx;Password=xxx; DataCompression=True;"); conn.Open(); But I get the following exceptions Running 64 bit: "The provider cannot run in 64-bit mode." Running 32 bit: An unexpected exception occurred. Type: System.DllNotFoundException, Message: Unable to load DLL 'cwbdc.dll': The operating system cannot run . (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700B6). I have uninstalled the Client Access and installed it again. The cwbdc.dll does exist in the system32 and syswow64 . I have no problem connecting to the AS400 if I use odbc. I'm running a 64 bit verion of Windows 7. Any ideas? /Jimmy

• Loading a Workflow 4 from xaml file and adding it to workflowdesigner

  Hi I have created a couple of activities and stored them as XAML. Opening them in the Workflowdesigner works great and I can Execute them. Now I would like to create a new Activity and add the activities I created to it. Basically loading it from the XAML and into the designer as part of another activity/flow. I have tried adding my activities to the toolbox but the render as dynamicactivity and (understandably) does not work. Any suggestions? Is it even possible? /Jimmy

  Hi I have created an Activity (CodeActivity) that retrieves the temperature where I live. I wan't to add that activity to a workflow and connect it to an if statement/activity that can based on my temperature outargument do different things. But I can't seem to find how to access the outargument from my temperature-activity. This is my first Windows Workflow 4 project so perhaps I'm attacking this in the wrong way. I have: public OutArgument Degrees { get; set; } But how do I access it? I have found tutorials how to get the data when running the activity (only one) but not as part of a workflow.   I am refering to this article from Jimmy Bogard He is suggesting two projects to organize your ASP.NET MVC solution. Basically, one project for the code and another for the rendering My concern is about global.asax file. Jimmy suggested separating global.asax from global.asax.cs and put them in two differents projects When I did this, I could not compile my solution. I got this error : Could not load type 'MyProject.Web.Global'. Can someone help and show me how to solve this? Thanks

  I have names like this: $str = 'JAMES "JIMMY" SMITH' I run strtolower, then ucwords, which returns this: $proper_str = 'James "jimmy" Smith' I'd like to capitalize the second letter of words in which the first letter is a double quote. Here's the regexp. It appears strtoupper is not working - the regexp simply returns the unchanged original expression. $proper_str = preg_replace('/"([a-z])/',strtoupper('$1'),$proper_str); Any clues? Thanks!!

One of the reason that I set it directly, is that in the code the setters are not final and they could be overridden. If the right way is to set it directly and I want to make sure that the name filed is not null always. Should I provide two checks, one in the constructor and one in the setter. I read in effective java that I should use NullPointerException for null parameters. Should I use IllegalArgumentException for other checks, like id in the example.

• Is LINQ to objects a collection of combinators?

  I was just trying to explain the usefulness of combinators to a colleague and I told him LINQ to objects are like combinators as they exhibit the same value, the ability to combine small pieces to create a single large piece. Though I don't know that I can call LINQ to objects combinators. I've seen 2 levels of definition for combinator that I generalize as such: A combinator is a function which only uses things passed to it A combinator is a function which only uses things passed to it and other standard atomic functions but not state The first is very rigid and can be seen in the combinatory calculus systems and in haskell things like $ and . and various similar functions meet this rule. The second is less rigid and would allow something like sum as it uses the + function which was not passed in but is standard and not stateful. Though the LINQ extensions in C# use state in their iteration models, so I feel I can't say they're combinators. Can someone who understands the definition of a combinator more thoroughly and with more experience in these realms give a distinct ruling on this? Are my definitions of 'combinator' wrong to begin with?

• Do you develop with localization in mind?

  When working on a software project or a website, do you develop with localization in mind? By this I mean e.g. Externalizing all strings, including error messages. Not using images that contain text. Designing your UI with text expansion in mind. Using pseudo-translation to test your UI's early in the process. etc. On projects you work on, are these in the 'nice to have' category and let the L10N team worry about the rest, or do you have localization readiness built into your development process? I'm interested to hear how developers view localization in general.

• Is functional programming a superset of object oriented?

  The more functional programming I do, the more I feel like it adds an extra layer of abstraction that seems like how an onion's layer is- all encompassing of the previous layers. I don't know if this is true so going off the OOP principles I've worked with for years, can anyone explain how functional does or doesn't accurately depict any of them: Encapsulation, Abstraction, Inheritance, Polymorphism I think we can all say, yes it has encapsulation via tuples, or do tuples count technically as fact of "functional programming" or are they just a utility of the language? I know Haskell can meet the "interfaces" requirement, but again not certain if it's method is a fact of functional? I'm guessing that the fact that functors have a mathematical basis you could say those are a definite built in expectation of functional, perhaps? Please, detail how you think functional does or does not fulfill the 4 principles of OOP.

• Do any languages other than haskell/agda have a hindley-milner type system and type classes?

  In pondering what gives Haskell such a layer of mental pain in becoming proficient the main thing I can think of are the Monads, Applicatives, Functors, and gaining an intuition to know how a list or maybe will behave in regards to sequence or alternate or bind etc. But why haven't other languages presented these same concepts given the usefulness of monads/applicatives/etc? It occurs to me, type classes are the key, so the question is: Have any languages other than Haskell/Agda actually implemented type classes in the same or similar way?

• Functional programming readability

  I'm curious about this because I recall before learning any functional languages, I thought them all horribly, awfully, terribly unreadable. Now that I know Haskell and f#, I find it takes a little longer to read less code, but that little code does far more than an equivalent amount would in an imperative language, so it feels like a net gain and I'm not extremely practiced in functional. Here's my question, I constantly hear from OOP folks that functional style is terribly unreadable. I'm curious if this is the case and I'm deluding myself, or if they took the time to learn a functional language, the whole style would no longer be more unreadable than OOP? Has anybody seen any evidence or got any anecdotes where they saw this go one way or another with frequency enough to possibly say? If writing functionally really is of lower readability than I don't want to keep using it, but I really don't know if that's the case or not..

• Multiple sites with the same codebase in Python

  I am trying to run a large amount of sites which share about 90% of their code. They are simply designed to query an API and return the results. They will have a common userbase / database but will be configured slightly different and will have different CSS (perhaps even different templating). My initial idea was to run them as separate applications with a common library but I have read about the sites framework which would allow them to run from a single instance of Django which may help to reduce memory usage. https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/sites/ Is the site framework the right approach to a problem like this, and does it have real benefits over running separate applications? Initially I thought it was, but now I think otherwise. I have heard the following: Your SITE_ID is set in settings.py, so in order to have multiple sites, you need multiple settings.py configurations, which means multiple distinct processes/instances. You can of course share the code base between them, but each site will need a dedicated worker / WSGIDaemon to serve the site. This effectively removes any benefit of running multiple sites under one hood, if each site needs a UWSGI instance running. • Keep search engine from indexing specific content on your site

  I've got a pretty weird scenario that I was wondering someone could help me out with. I recently created a blog site and noticed that search engines have been including the content of my footer in with the description. This presents a problem because my footer is basic a brief legal statement saying that the views are my own and don't represent the company I work for (and yada yada yada). So, basically, I need a way to prevent search engines from indexint that content in my footer or even my footer altogether. I've been looking back through some of my SEO books and searching through forums but this doesn't seem possible. Is it possible to keep search engines from indexing only certain content on a page? If it isn't possible, what alternatives are there to ensure this legal mumbo jumbo doesn't show up in the results?

• Share code between projects in tfs 2010

  Hi What is the best way to handle code sharing in TFS 2010? We have a couple of Visual studio projects that other Visual Studio projects use. ex: Shared Project Project 1 Solution -Shared Project -Project 1 Project Project 2 Solution -Shared Project -Project 2 Project Also we have Third party code for example: Third Party -Telerik --2009.1.402.35 --2009.02.0701.35 When I open my "Project 1" solution i want my shared code project to be included in that solution. (thats the way we work today). We basically have one TFS Project that contains all the code. Now we want to use it the "right" (?) way, We would like to have Project 1 and 2 in separate TFS solutions. If I for example makes sure we have all our project in the same structure on disk and just add the shared project to my Project 1 solution (even if the projects reside in two different TFS Projects) would that work with builds? How have you solved the problem, I guess we are not the only ones having shared code between projects? Cheers /Jimmy

• Problems with builds on TFS 2010 and resolving dependencies

  Hi I have a project that works great on my machine (and production servers). It's a VS2010 project running C#3.5. When letting my build server build the solution it can't resolve a couple of my third party dll's. Error message: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(1360,9): warning MSB3268: The primary reference "Third.Party.Assembly, Version=50.11.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0561a7c6dbd6f0ea, processorArchitecture=MSIL" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the framework assembly "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" which could not be resolved in the currently targeted framework. ".NETFramework,Version=v3.5". To resolve this problem, either remove the reference "Third.Party.Assembly, Version=50.11.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0561a7c6dbd6f0ea, processorArchitecture=MSIL" or retarget your application to a framework version which contains "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a". [d:\Builds\3\mySolution.sln] Everything compiles and runs great on my machine, but the build server seem to struggle. I think the Third.Party.Assembly is written in VB.net. Since the assembly is third party I can't remove the reference to "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Compatibility" and since I don't get any warnings on my computer could it really be that I'm running v3.5?   I am attempting to run Xstream in a netbeans proof of concept project. I have the following code. • JQuery Autocomplete - format listing and only return a part to the text box

  I'm using the JQuery Autocomplete and it's working just fine. I'm using it to allow someone to search for users out of a database by searching on last name or id number. Right now the drop down list that is created is the resultes of a SQL query and looks something like: $row_rst['lName'] . ', ' . $row_rst['fName'] . " - " . $row_rst['user'] . "|" . $row_rst['id'] which outputs something like: Jones, Henry - hjones Gibbons, Peter - pgibbons When I pick Henry the text box gets Jones, Henry - hjones and the hidden field gets his id. I'd like to format the drop down in columns if possible and only return Jones, Henry to the text box if possible. Are either of those options possible? I'm thinking it has to do with either formatItem(row) or formatResult(row) but I'm not sure and I can't seem to find how to go about this.

  I encounter this problem repeatedly, and haven't a clue what is causing it. I get an exception in the DataBind: "SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items". Here are some important pieces of information: 1) I reload listOrgs periodically when the underlying data has changed. 2) The Organization.DTListAll call returns about 500 Int, String pairs. 3) There are no duplicate or null values in the returned data 4) After the first two lines below, listOrgs.Items.Count is 0, and the Selected Value is 0 5) The selected value when the DataBind operation executes is a value that is not in the set of ID values returned 6) All of the stuff I have found on line so far hasn't helped. 7) I am stumped! listOrgs.Items.Clear(); listOrgs.SelectedValue = "0"; listOrgs.DataSource = new Organization().DTListAll(SiteID); listOrgs.DataTextField = "OrganizationName"; listOrgs.DataValueField = "OrganizationID"; listOrgs.DataBind(); Bob Jones

• How to measure the time HTTP requests spend sitting in the accept-queue?

  I am using Apache2 on Ubuntu 9.10, and I am trying to tune my configuration for a web application to reduce latency of responses to HTTP requests. During a moderately heavy load on my small server, there are 24 apache2 processes handling requests. Additional requests get queued. Using "netstat", I see 24 connections are ESTABLISHED and 125 connections are TIME_WAIT. I am trying to figure out if that is considered a reasonable backlog. Most requests get serviced in a fraction of a second, so I am assuming requests move through the accept-queue fairly quickly, probably within 1 or 2 seconds, but I would like to be more certain. Can anyone recommend an easy way to measure the time an HTTP request sits in the accept-queue? The suggestions I have come across so far seem to start the clock after the apache2 worker accepts the connection. I'm trying to quantify the accept-queue delay before that. thanks in advance, David Jones

  I have been assigned a task that I should change our solr search to sort a list returned by solr by using the term frequency. Well, I´ve found a way to do so simply by using omitNorms="true". The problem is, that this won´t work when I am doing a field - search, say by name: q=name:jones Following this example I get a list of document whose term frequency is the highest for the "name" field. But What I wanted to achieve is to have a query that is giving my a list of documents whose term frequency is the highest for ALL fields. Example: If a User named Jones also has the word "Jones" in his biography 10 times I want that document ranked higher. Is that possible ?

• Using PHP OCI8 with 32-bit PHP on Windows 64-bit

  The world migration from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems is gaining pace. However I've seen a couple of customers having difficulty with the PHP OCI8 extension and Oracle DB on Windows 64-bit platforms. The errors vary depending how PHP is run. They may appear in the Apache or PHP log: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\php_oci8_11g.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. or Warning oci_connect(): OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that PATH includes the directory with Oracle Instant Client libraries Other than IIS permission issues a common cause seems to be trying to use PHP with libraries from an Oracle 64-bit database on the same machine. There is currently no 64-bit version of PHP on http://php.net/ so there is a library mismatch. A solution is to install Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and make sure that PHP uses these libraries, while not interferring with the 64-bit database on the same machine. Warning: The following hacky steps come untested from a Linux user: Unzip Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and move it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2. You may need to do this in a console with elevated permissions. Edit your PATH environment variable and insert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2 in the directory list before the entry for the Oracle Home library. Windows makes it so all 32-bit applications that reference C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 actually see the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 directory. Your 64-bit database won't find an Instant Client in the real, physical C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and will continue to use the database libraries. Some of our Windows team are concerned about this hack and prefer a more "correct" solution that (i) doesn't require changing the Windows system directory (ii) doesn't add to the "memory" burden about what was configured on the system (iii) works when there are multiple database versions installed. The solution is to write a script which will set the 64-bit (or 32-bit) Oracle libraries in the path as needed before invoking the relevant bit-ness application. This does have a weakness when the application is started as a service. As a footnote: If you don't have a local database and simply need to have 32-bit and 64-bit Instant Client accessible at the same time, try the "symbolic" link approach covered in the hack in this OTN forum thread. Reminder warning: This blog post came untested from a Linux user.
