  Welcome to this year's JavaOne conference! We are glad you dropped by. We want to keep you informed of all the happenings around JavaOne: all the events leading up to the conference and all the events during the conference week itself. We'll cover announcements, news, planning (but we won't make you go to any meetings), and snafus (nothing that makes us look too bad, of course). We'll even throw in a contest or two to make sure you are paying attention. We'll post a couple of times a week, and then more frequently as we get closer to September. There's a group of us, and we cover the Java beat, JUGs, Oracle Technology Network, Oracle Solaris, and lots more. What do you want to hear about? Let us know.A group of us from the office went to see the movie Iron Man 2 (it just debuted in the United States) last week and it reminded us of Java, the Java community, and JavaOne. In all three cases, from many disparate (and sometimes seemingly incompatible) parts and people, something comes together that works, is cool, and helps make a better world. • Why are all the tabs except MBeans disabled in JConsole?

  I'm trying to connect to JConsole on a server running: java version "1.6.0_0" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.4.1) (6b14-1.4.1-0ubuntu12) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b08, mixed mode) from my local machine, running: java version "1.6.0_24" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07-334-10M3326) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.1-b02-334, mixed mode) When I connect to jconsole on the server, all the tabs except the MBeans tab are disabled. If I run the same application on my local machine, and use jconsole to connect to it there (using the remote interface still), all the tabs are enabled just fine. Everything I have seen only suggested the possibility that the server was 1.4 or earlier.

• How to utilize 4TB HDD, which is showing up as 2.72TB

  I have two internal HDD's. They're both 4TB capacity. They're both formatted with the GPT partitioning scheme, and they're Basic Discs (not dynamic). I'm on Windows 8 64bit. I have UEFI, not BIOS. When I view the discs in Computer Management MMC with Disk Management, they show that each partition is formatted as NTFS and takes up the entire drive. And it shows that each drive has a capacity of 3725.90GB in the bottom section of Disk Management, but 2.794.39GB in the top section. When I view the discs in "My Computer"/"This PC" they only show up as 2.72TB, which matches the amount capacity I'm getting from some other 3TB HDD's I have. Why are they showing up as only 2.72GB? Will I be able to use the full 4TB capacity? Also of note, although I'm not sure it's relevant: I often get corrupted files on these two HDD's. None of my other HDD's give me corrupted files. Usually the problem is fixed by running chkdsk /f on the drives, but it's extremely annoying. In the picture below, it's the X: and Y: drives. Steps I've tried Flashed latest BIOS (MSI J.90 to K.30)

• How do I get my laptop's screen brightness settings back?

  From when I bought it up until yesterday, my laptop would dim the screen automatically if you let it sit for long enough, and then if you hit a key or moved the mouse, the brightness would jump back to what you had it at. I enjoy that behavior. It works well. Then I booted it up today, and found that now it will dim the screen automatically if you let it sit for long enough, but it doesn't restore the screen brightness. I have to do that manually, every single time, and it's getting really old really fast. It's an Alienware M17 running Windows 7 64-bit, in case that helps.

• Arbitrary Key Remapping on a Mac

  I bought a cheap Chinese replacement keyboard for my late 2007 MBP. The close square/curly bracket key actually sends a left control signal to the Mac. So I'm trying to remap my backslash/pipe key to be close square/curly bracket but I can't find the key remapping software to do it. Double Command and KeyRemap4Macbook can't do arbitrary key remaps and uControl/fkeys don't work on Snow Leopard. Anyone have ideas? I have no problem editing text config files if necessary.

  2 new HP Pavilion notebooks with 7 Home Premium pre-loaded with Norton. My first act was to use the Norton Removal Tool and load ZoneAlarm free and AVG Free. • How do I disable Tomcat? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to disable Tomcat on linux? According to my server host, something called Tomcat is hogging all my resources and slowing down the server. As far as I'm aware I'm not using it as the only thing running on the server is Plesk and a few Wordpress installations. I'm a real dummy at using SSH, I can navigate to folders, change permissions and that's about it. Could somebody explain to me as if I'm a 5 year old how to disable TomCat (and also how to stop it re-enabling on startup)? Thanks!

• Vista gets stuck in an endless loop while booting

  I put my laptop to sleep last night, and when I woke up this morning... it didn't. So I tried to reboot, and everything went fine until it got to the Vista splash screen, where it's supposed to display the logon. Here, it hits an endless loop: Display the cursor with the blue spinny thing that replaced the hourglass, for 5-10 seconds Display "Please wait..." for about half a second Screen flashes to black, then quickly back to the Vista splash screen Goto step 1 The whole time, my hard LED is on almost non-stop. I can boot into Safe Mode... sometimes. Sometimes it'll load all the drivers, then sit there for about 10 minutes, spinning the hard drive non-stop, then reboot with no warning. I tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration. Didn't fix anything. When I've managed to get into Safe Mode, I tried running CHKDSK. Didn't fix anything. I tried running System Restore to each of my last two restore points. Didn't fix anything either time. I ran a virus scan. Didn't find anything. I tried calling the manufacturer (Alienware), only to discover that my warranty expired last freaking week and now I can't get it fixed without paying exorbitant sums of money. I'm about at my wits' end here. Has anyone seen this problem before? Does anyone know how to fix it? Does anyone know a solution that does not involve reinstalling the OS and losing an entire year's worth of program installations, Windows Updates and configuring and tweaking things until it's working just like I want it to?

Sometimes it's as if half the backlighting was turned off, and sometimes it's as if all the backlighting was turned off, all except for the mouse pointer, which remains as bright white as ever. Trying to change the screen's brightness does nothing, but rebooting fixes this. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what's causing it or how to make it stop happening?

  So I have set up a simple server running debian stable (squeeze), and have configured git. Using gitolite, I have all functionality (at least the basic clone/push/pull/commit) working. Installation of gitweb went without any issues. • Transfering Files to server IP and port

  I need to transfer files from my local computer on windows 7 to a server running linux. I access the server with putty through ssh at a specific IPv4 address and port number. I've attempted using the pscp command from my local computer but was denied access by the server. "Fatal: Network error: Connection refused" c:>pscp test.csv userid@**IPv4_Addres***:Port# /path/destination_file_name. Either the server blocks all pscp attempts from unauthorized users (most likely my laptop included) or I used the command incorrectly. If you have experience using this command, where exactly will the file get transfered to, I'm assuming that the path destination starts at my home directory in the server. Also if you have any other alternative methods of transfering the files let me know. Update 1 I have also tried using WinSCP however I got permission denied for that as well, it looks like the server will not let me upload or save files. Solved I had a complete lapse of memory and forgot about sudo (spent too much time with scripts the last 2 months), so I was able to change the permissions to allow external editing. • Calling WCF service with parameters from VBScript

However, if I touch the space between the cells, nothing happens at all. • How do I make Master/Detail subreports in ReportBuilder come out right?

  I've got a report in ReportBuilder that's supposed to report on two objects. I didn't create this report, and I can't ask the person who did about how it works. Before running the report, we have some code that goes through, finds all the properties on the objects, and loads them into a memory dataset that looks like this: OBJECT_ID: TStringField PROP_NAME: TStringField PROP_VALUE: TStringField The report engine then creates a line on the report for each property in this dataset. This is implemented in a sub-report, whose parent only contains an OBJECT_ID, which is a human-readable name. Everything was going great until we had to display a "comment" of arbitrary size in the report. I made a second sub-report with a TMemoField so it could hold the text, and set the report up in the report designer. What I expect when I run the report is something that looks like this: HEADER Object 1 properties Object 1 comment Object 2 properties Object 2 comment I've managed to get just about everything but that. I used the MasterDataPipeline and MasterFieldLinks properties of the sub-report's pipelines to try to link the OBJECT_IDs of the sub-reports to the OBJECT_ID of the header, and that's the closest I've managed to come, but now what I see is: HEADER Object 1 properties Object 1 comment Object 2 comment The "Object 2 properties" section is nowhere to be seen, even though I've manually verified that the data is making it into the dataset correctly. This is driving me nuts. Any ReportBuilder gurus out there know what's going on and now to fix it?

  I'm trying to build a debug version of rtl140.bpl to make debugging apps with runtime packages easier. I built the DPK and ran DCC32 on it, and it gets a ways in, then dies. C:\Program Files (x86)\Embarcadero\RAD Studio\7.0\source\Win32\rtl\sys\Variants.pas(1072) Fatal: F2092 Program or unit 'Variants' recursively uses itself But looking at Variants.pas, I can't see how. It only uses SysUtils and Types in the interface section, and neither of those use Variants, or use anything that uses Variants. Does anyone have any idea why this is breaking?

• How To AutoScroll a DataGridView during Drag and Drop

  One of the forms in my C# .NET application has multiple DataGridViews that implement drag and drop to move the rows around. The drag and drop mostly works right, but I've been having a hard time getting the DataGridViews to AutoScroll - when a row is dragged near the top or bottom of the box, to scroll it in that direction. So far, I've tried implementing a version of this solution. I have a ScrollingGridView class inheriting from DataGridView that implements the described timer, and according to the debugger, the timer is firing appropriately, but the timer code: SendMessage(Handle, WM_VSCROLL, (IntPtr)scrollDirectionInt, IntPtr.Zero); doesn't do anything as far as I can tell, possibly because I have multiple DataGridViews in the form. I also tried modifying the AutoScrollOffset property, but that didn't do anything either. Investigation of the DataGridView and ScrollBar classes doesn't seem to suggest any other commands or functions that will actually make the DataGridView scroll. Can anyone help me with a function that will actually scroll the DataGridView, or some other way to solve the problem?

• System Tray Popup Windows 7 Style

  Hey All, I want something like this: http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/windows-7-wireless.jpg This window is not resizable, and aligns itself above the system tray icon which it is related to. I have this: http://i.imgur.com/79FZi.png Which is resizeable, and it goes wherever it feels like. If you click the volume control in Win 7, it always pops up directly above the icon. This is ideal. I've found this reference which I think is trying to solve the same problem (can't tell though as the images are dead), http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2169006/create-a-system-tray-styled-box-in-winforms-c but I'm using WPF and I'm not sure how to get these Form objects they refer to from my Window object. This is the XAML declaration of my window atm, <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" x:Class="WirelessControl.Window1" x:Name="Window" Title="Window1" Width="260" Height="370" mc:Ignorable="d" WindowStyle="None"></Window> I feel like based on how common this is in Windows that there must be a fairly easy way to do this. ResizeMode="NoResize" causes my window border to disappear, so that's no help. Thanks guys, I hope I was comprehensive enough.

• Why does Facebook iOS dialog for feed publish disappear after login?

  I'm trying to use the Facebook iOS "feed" dialog call to allow my app's user to share something on their Facebook wall. When the facebook app is not installed, it attempts to let them authenticate within the app (presumably using a web view). The issue is that this dialog just disappears once they authenticate. I was expecting the web view to return to the "feed" sharing view. How do I detect that they authenticated so that I can re-open the feed dialog? I've added fbDidLogin to my app delegate, but it's not being called. (I wasn't sure if this would normally be called or not, but I read several people recommending this.) • How do I perform an HSL transform on a texture?

  If I have an OpenGL texture, and I need to perform HSL modifications on it before rendering the texture, from what I've heard I need a shader. Problem is, I know nothing about shaders. Does anyone know where I would need to look? I want to write a function where I can pass in a texture and three values, a hue shift in degrees, and saturation and lightness multipliers between 0 and 2, and then have it call a shader that will apply these transformations to the texture before it renders. The interface would look something like this: procedure HSLTransform(texture: GLuint; hShift: integer; sMult, lMult: GLfloat); I have no idea what's supposed to go inside the routine, though. I understand the basic math involved in HSL/RGB conversions, but I don't know how to write a shader or how to apply it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Delphi examples preferred, but I can also read C if I have to.

• CSS drop-down menus pushing page content down

  This is probably (hopefully) a pretty simple question, but I can't seem to get it to work so I'll turn to the experts here. I'm using a pretty straightforward CSS drop-down menu, with just a little JQuery involved. The issue is that when I hover over the drop-down and it opens, it's pushing everything on the page down below it rather then opening over it. I've tried messing with the z-index but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Any tips would be fantastic, thanks in advance.
