• Mac OS X vs. Windows mouse wheel scrolling

  Mac OS X determines what area to scroll by the mouse position. Windows does this by what application is active. So I thought anyway. If Notepad++ is the active application in Windows, I can scroll underlying applications by placing the mouse pointer on them. But this seems like the only application with this behaviour. Windows Explorer (Win7) doesn't even allow scrolling in the side pane if the pane is not active. My question is, can this be controlled by developers, and why is Windows behaving like this? I am not about to make a Windows application, but as a developer this makes me curious (and annoyed).

  We're going to meet a potential new client today and between ourselves started discussing the need for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and whether we need one at this juncture. In this case we don't think we'll be talking about technical specifics as it's an initial meeting about who we are. Is there any precedent on when is the right time for small ISVs to insist on NDAs and when perhaps the insistence might appear over the top and precious. All ideas welcomed, though in our case we're interested in UK law.

• Turning my website into a non-profit

  I was given an established website about a year ago. It makes some money on ads, but not much (less than 10k/year). I am no longer able to manage the site and am considering turning it over to another person. I don't want them to turn around and sell it. It was suggested that I establish a non-profit of sorts and transfer the assets to that entity. Does anybody have experience or advice on this subject?

• Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - 99% fragmentation on non-clustered, non-unique index

  I have a table with several indexes (defined below). One of the indexes (IX_external_guid_3) has 99% fragmentation regardless of rebuilding/reorganizing the index. Anyone have any idea as to what might cause this, or the best way to fix it? We are using Entity Framework 4.0 to query this, the EF queries on the other indexed fields about 10x faster on average then the external_guid_3 field, however an ADO.Net query is roughly the same speed on both (though 2x slower than the EF Query to indexed fields). • Will it be possible to use a non-pae kernel in 12.10

  I know that Ubuntu +1 questions are frowned upon, but this I believe is a fair exception. Currently I have 2 systems running Ubuntu 12.10, and one of them has a Pentium M that doesn't support PAE (strange I know, but true). This has meant in the past that I had to rely on a custom iso to install Ubuntu a similar system,and so this time I went with Xubuntu 12.04. My question is 2 fold, but really one question: Is it/will it be possible to install a non-pae version of the 12.10 kernel from the standard repositories? If no, how can I get such a kernel? (Is there a PPA with such a kernel available?). NB: Before anyone suggests that I just install this package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/linux-image-generic, please note that this comes with PAE enabled. P.S. Yes, I have Googled. I haven't found the answer.

  ubuntu 12.04 non-pae kernel 3.5.0-17-wt-nonpae: installed this kernel on dell d505 (pentium M) under ubuntu 12.04. Runs slower than 3.2.0-33 and 3.2.0-030200. Is this to be expected? Could not install the kernel headers provided on the ppa: "dependencies cannot be fullfilled: linux-headers-3.5.0-17". After installing the kernel image, Synaptic offered me to install linux-headers-3.5.0-18 and linux-headers-3.5.0-18-generic (which could be installed successfully). volker

• audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying not being called during scrolling UITableView

  One of my views is a UITableView which acts as the delegate for an AVAudioPlayer and this table essentially plays sounds when you select a certain row with options to repeat the sound after its finished playing. However, I noticed that if I select a cell with repeat ON for a certain sound and then scroll through the UITableView to select a different sound, it will not call audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying (and therefore not repeat) until after scrolling has stopped. As soon as I stop scrolling, it repeats just fine. Or if I don't scroll at all, it repeats just fine. What could be happening during scrolling that the UITableView is no longer acting as the delegate and calling audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying? Any thoughts?

• Continual Professional Development - proving new skills to non-technical employers

  Background I work in a non-IT based company, as a professional software developer, building a large scale internal database system. I am fortunate to have a fairly senior position within the company, and have been working here for around 4 years. Often I get asked by management "how do you learn new things?". To be honest, I don't know how to answer this. Over the last 6 months, I've really gotten my teeth into some new techniques and technologies to make my level of coding far better and hopefully improve the quality of the software. Even if it's just refreshing my skills on things I've learnt already. Like last week I dived into some complex XLinq and TPL code (.net). Nothing revolutionary, but I feel like I am a bit better than before. Question The question is, how do I prove this to my employer? It'd be nice to be able to put this on paper. Possibilities I could: Keep a journal of what I've learnt - keeping the technical bits in (nobody would understand or care, but it's better than them being omitted) ????   Hi folks, it’s been quite calm at Developer IT’s this summer since we were all involved in other projects, but we are slowly comming back. In this post, we will present a simple way of tracking files download with Google Analytics with the help of jQuery. We work for a client that offers a lot of pdf files to download on their web site and wanted to know which one are the most popular. They use Google Analytics for a long time now and we did not want to have a second interface in order to present those stats to our client. So usign IIS logs was not a idea to consider. Since Google already offers us a splendid web interface and a powerful API, we deceided to hook up simple javascript code into the jQuery click event to notify Analytics that a pdf has been requested.   The problem Somehow on this box every time I split a window (^W v or :vs) the original pane scrolls in such a way that my cursor is exactly scrolloff=5 from the top. I have tried to remove all ~/.vim* and /etc/vim* files but no dice. Even a aptitude purge vim followed by a rm -rf /usr/share/vim/ /etc/vim* didn't change anything. • EditText items in a scrolling list lose their changes when scrolled off the screen

  I have a long scrolling list of EditText items created by a SimpleCursorAdapter and prepopulated with values from an SQLite database. The items display OK - scrolling through them shows that each has the correct value from the database. I can make an edit change to any of the EditTexts and the new text is accepted and displayed in the box. But...if I then scroll the list far enough to take the edited item off the screen, when I scroll back to look at it again its value has returned to what it was before I made the changes, ie. my edits have been lost. In trying to sort this out, I've done a getText to look at what's in the EditText after I've done my edits (and before a scroll) and getText returns the original text, even though the EditText is displaying my new text. It seems that the EditText has only accepted my edits superficially and they haven't been bound to the EditText, meaning they get dropped when scrolled off the screen. Can anyone please tell me what's going on here and what I need to do to force the EditText to retain its edits? Thanks Ian

  Vim shows non-printable characters prefixed with a ^ (for instance ^@ for a NUL byte). I have a column based file containing both printable and non-printable characters which is difficult to read, since each non-printable character shifts all remaining columns one character to the right. Is there a way to hide non-printable characters or simply display a placeholder char instead? I also don't mind having every character be represented by two characters.

  As a non-techie, I would really appreciate your help on this. I have some files (html) that need to be in pure ascii form to be properly processed. Since these files are produced by humans, every so often non-ascii characters sneak in. Often it is a stray " (curled variety) or something similar that is difficult to find and need to be removed. I have found text editors (eg. textmate) that can strip out all non-ascii characters, but I need to find one that can highlight where they are, rather than remove them (as I need to remove them from the source and not the html file). I hope this makes sense and appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks!

  Could anyone point me to (or provide?) some nice, clear examples of how to implement scrolling in Win32? Google brings up a lot of stuff, obviously, but most examples seem either too simple or too complicated for me to be sure that they demonstrate the right way of doing things. I use LispWorks CAPI (cross-platform Common Lisp GUI lib) in my current project, and on Windows I have a hard-to-figure-out bug relating to scrolling; basically I want to do some tests directly via the Win32 API to see if I can shed some light on the situation. • Weird Scrolling Issue Using UITableView

  I am a working UINavigationController pushing two different UITableViews on and off the stack. All of my functionality is working correctly except scrolling. When either table is scrolled above the top row, or below the bottom row, it stays there exposing the margin above/below the table. I am looking for the table to "bounce" back so that only the table is visible and not the white space area beyond - just like any other iPhone app. One of my UITableViews is being loaded by NIB and the other is being created programatically - both of which have the exact same result. I have tried all the bounce and scrolling settings in the Nib, but nothing seems to work. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Please let me know if I can be more specific in detailing my problem. Thanks, -Scott

• Optimized 2D Tile Scrolling in OpenGL

  Hello, I'm developing a 2D sidescrolling game and I need to optimize my tiling code to get a better frame rate. As of right now I'm using a texture atlas and 16x16 tiles for 480x320 screen resolution. The level scrolls in both directions, and is significantly larger than 1 screen (thousands of pixels). I use glTranslate for the actual scrolling. So far I've tried: Drawing only the on-screen tiles using glTriangles, 2 per square tile (too much overhead) Drawing the entire map as a Display List (great on a small level, way to slow on a large one) Partitioning the map into Display Lists half the size of the screen, then culling display lists (still slows down for 2-directional scrolling, overdraw is not efficient) Any advice is appreciated, but in particular I'm wondering: I've seen Vertex Arrays/VBOs suggested for this because they're dynamic. What's the best way to take advantage of this? If I simply keep 1 screen of vertices plus a bit of overdraw, I'd have to recopy the array every few frames to account for the change in relative coordinates (shift everything over and add the new rows/columns). If I use more overdraw this doesn't seem like a big win; it's like the half-screen display list idea. Does glScissor give any gain if used on a bunch of small tiles like this, be it a display list or a vertex array/VBO Would it be better just to build the level out of large textures and then use glScissor? Would losing the memory saving of tiling be an issue for mobile development if I do this (just curious, I'm currently on a PC)? This approach was mentioned here Thanks :)
