  • Can't resolve offline file conflicts

    We use roaming profiles on our Server 2008 R2 domain, with folder redirection for 'desktop', 'my documents' and 'application data'. But as our network is split across two sites, we have one file server at each site, which are configured to use domain based DFS namespaces and DFS replication to keep things in sync. The DFS path for the replication folder is as follows: \\domain\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> The real paths are \\site-1-server\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> and \\site-2-server\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> As our users all switch between sites (sometimes several time per day), our folder redirection policy has to redirect to the DFS roots rather than hardcoded to a specific server. Both DFS and DFS-R have been proven to be working perfectly. On our laptops, we use offline files for the redirected folders, and this also works fine, however the problem is as follows: When conflicts occur in offline files, it is impossible to resolve the conflicts. I'm given the usual conflict resolution options (i.e. 'Ignore', 'Keep Both', 'Keep network' and 'Keep local'), however, not one of these options will resolve any conflict, yet no error is produced. We only use offline files on laptops, which have either Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 Professional installed. The problem is not specific to any one laptop, it affects every laptop and every conflicting file in exactly the same way. I would have thought the set up we have is common for companies that have multiple sites, so I'm hoping someone will have seen this before?

  • Folder Redirection/Offline Files on Win 7 | Folders are empty when not connected to the domain

    I've been struggling with this issue for days and cannot seem to find anyone else with a similar issue. I will note first that I have tried using both roaming profiles and the group policy setting for force local profiles.... now onto the problem. What I am trying to do is have my teachers accounts log onto their laptops using their domain credentials. Once logged in their desktop and documents are redirected to a network share //server/redirects/documents/. This works fine when the computer is connected to the domain network. Offline File Sync works great and caches the files locally. However this all breaks down when the user logs in when the computer is no longer connected to the domain network. When the user logs in the desktop and documents are empty. What I find very odd is if I manually go to the offline file folder all of the files are there, The group policy folder redirection does not execute to the offline folder. Is this by Design? (It does not work like this on Vista, I have the exact same group policy settings set on vista machines and it works flawlessly). Additional Info When I look at the event log there is no folder redirection events at all when user logs in and is not connected to the network. In addition a new profile is create in c:/users/username.domain.00x. Every log in creates an additional profile. There is a event that states that a registry files were still in use. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Disable work offline in Internet Explorer 8

    I am using Windows 7, and IE8. Every time I have GMail open in IE8, and I resume from sleep, I get the question about working offline - even if at that momoent the wireless connection is available. This is particularly sad, because all browsing is stopped until I dismiss that dialog, that may be hidden below other windows. As I am not using offline browsing at all, is it possible to disable the functionality altogether, so that I no longer get the question? A bit like in Firefox, where I simply get the error message with page unavailable. I have googled a bit, but no luck so far. Even a direct modification of the registry would be fine, for me.

  • Dell printer goes offline after second print job.

    Dell printer goes offline(server connection) after second print job. Although the printer's display says it is ready. If you turn off then on the printer you can send one job and goes back offline(server connection) on the next print job. We have multiple Dell 2330dn printers installed through a print server, only one of the printers is experiencing this problem. Two different users. Two different machines. Two different operating systems (win7 and Vista). The computers have been reset. Dell printers have web interface if this helps (through IP address). Thanks for any help!

  • Making folder available offline - Access denied (Windows XP)

    I have a drive on a server called "filestore" This has a folder called "users" in here, theres is a "users" folder. In there are folders such as - jsmith, jblogs, abrown - which correspond to usernames of our active directory. When a user logs on, the H: drive is mapped to their above mentioned folder - for example //filestore/users/jsmith I am trying to make one of these folders available offline in Windows XP. when i do so, i get an access is denied error. according to this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461 i need to make the root folder have read access to the users. This means, however, all the users will be able to get in all the folders (if they browse to //filestore/users/) How can I still achieve offline files for that particular users "h:" drive, and still have the other folders secured?

I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save.   • Options for Linux OS executable archive files - self installers

    I am looking to create a web-project that is able to install with a program. The user should be able to download an archive file or tar file, run it (executable), and the setup script would ask for paths and configurable values and then unpack its 'payload' and sorting out the contents for deployment. This would be a Linux version of the MSI installer. Is there such a thing for Linux operating systems? This does not involve kernel level manipulations. All it needs to do is copy directories and files on the filesystem, which should cover about 80% if not more of all the *nix distributions.

    hi all, we're building an survey webapp which will let the user to add new records to the survey when offline and will upload when the browser reconnects with the server. We've identified that this will need offline storage and hence google gears seems to be an obvious choice (we understand that adobe Flash has Offline Storage but not sure if that is the best way). I am aware of Dojo offline javascript toolkit which uses google gears for the underlying functionality. However, dojo offline is not part of the dojo toolkit after version 1.3. (currently dojo is 1.4.2). Google gears toolkit is currently frozen except for critical vulnerability fixes (it has not been updated almost for the last 1 yr) because they think that HTML 5 is the way to go ahead. Hence, we're looking for a higher abstraction on top of Google Gears engine TODAY, AND which will (in the future) switch the underlying engine to HTML5 if the browser supports HTML5 standards. We'd love to use Dojo but they have discontinued Dojo offline -- we'd prefer something that will be maintained for some time. Which are possible good strategies, JS toolkits/libraries to use for building this webapp ? Pls. advise.

  • HP Deskjet 3600: Offline and won't stop blinking and won't print.

    Using Vista and an HP Deskjet 3600 on USB connection Normally when I unplug the printer, I open the printer queue and in the title bar it says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Use Printer Offline" then the offline message will go away and it will start printing. But for some reason, the bower button light is continually blinking. (this is the only light on the machine). The printer queue says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Offline" and when I unplug it it says "HP Deskjet 3600 - Offline - Use Printer Offline". I have tried unplugging it for a few hours, also tried turning it off for a few hours. Does anybody know what the single word Offline means? Does anybody know how I can clear out the memory in the Printer? (this is my guess as to what is causing the problem)

  • WinInet Apps failing when Internet Explorer is set to Offline Mode

    Ran into a nasty issue last week when all of a sudden many of my old applications that are using WinInet for HTTP access started failing. Specifically, the WinInet HttpSendRequest() call started failing with an error of 2, which when retrieving the error boils down to: WinInet Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Now this error can pop up in many legitimate scenarios with WinInet such as when no Internet connection is available or the HTTP configuration (usually configured in Internet Explorer’s options) is misconfigured. The error typically means that the server in question cannot be found or more specifically an Internet connection can’t be established. In this case the problem started suddenly and was causing some of my own applications (old Visual FoxPro apps using my own wwHttp library) and all Adobe Air applications (which apparently uses WinInet for its basic HTTP stack) along with a few more oddball applications to fail instantly when trying to connect via HTTP. Most other applications – all of my installed browsers, email clients, various social network updaters all worked just fine. It seems it was only WinInet apps that were failing. Yet oddly Internet Explorer appeared to be working. So the problem seemed to be isolated to those ‘classic’ applications using WinInet. WinInet’s base configuration uses the Internet Explorer options dialog. To check this out I typically go to the Internet Explorer options and find the Connection tab, and check out the LAN Setup. Make sure there are no rogue proxy settings or configuration scripts that are invalid. Trying with Auto-configuration on and off also can often fix ‘real’ configuration errors. This time however this wasn’t a problem – nothing in the LAN configuration was set (all default). I also played with the Automatic detection of settings which also had no effect. I also tried to use Fiddler to see if that would tell me something. Fiddler has a few additional WinInet configuration options in its configuration. Running Fiddler and hitting an HTTP request using WinInet would never actually hit Fiddler – the failure would occur before WinInet ever fired up the HTTP connection to go through the Fiddler HTTP proxy. And the Culprit is: Internet Explorer’s Work Offline Option The culprit in this situation was Internet Explorer which at some point, unknown to me switched into Offline Mode and was then shut down: When this Offline mode is checked when IE is running *or* if IE gets shut down with this flag set, all applications using WinInet by default assume that it’s running in offline mode. Depending on your caching HTTP headers and whether the page was cached previously you may or may not get a response or an error. For an independent non-browser application this will be highly unpredictable and likely result in failures getting online – especially if the application forces requests to always reload by disabling HTTP caching (as I do on most of my dynamic HTTP clients). What makes this especially tricky is that even when IE is in offline mode in the browser, you can still browse around the Web *if* you have a connection. IE will try to load anything it has cached from the local cache, but as soon as you hit a URL that isn’t cached it will automatically try to access that URL and uncheck the Work Offline option. Conversely if you get knocked off the Internet and browse in IE 9, IE will automatically go into offline mode. I never explicitly set offline mode – it just automatically sets itself on and off depending on the connection. Problem is if you’re not using IE all the time (as I do – rarely and just for testing so usually a few commonly used URLs) and you left it in offline mode when you exit, offline mode stays set which results in the above head scratcher. Ack. This isn’t new behavior in IE 9 BTW – this behavior has always been there, but I think what’s different is that IE now automatically switches between online and offline modes without notifying you at all, so it’s hard to tell when you are offline. Fixing the Issue in your Code If you have an application that is using WinInet, there’s a WinInet option called INTERNET_OPTION_IGNORE_OFFLINE. I just checked this out in my own applications and Internet Explorer 9 and it works, but apparently it’s been broken for some older releases (I can’t confirm how far back though) – lots of posts seem to suggest the flag doesn’t work. However, in IE 9 at least it does seem to work if you call InternetSetOption before you call HttpOpenRequest with the Http Session handle. In FoxPro code I use: DECLARE INTEGER InternetSetOption ;    IN WININET.DLL ;    INTEGER HINTERNET,;    INTEGER dwFlags,;    INTEGER @dwValue,;    INTEGER cbSize lnOptionValue = 1   && BOOL TRUE pass by reference   *** Set needed SSL flags lnResult=InternetSetOption(this.hHttpSession,;    INTERNET_OPTION_IGNORE_OFFLINE ,;  && 77    @lnOptionValue ,4)   DECLARE INTEGER HttpOpenRequest ;    IN WININET.DLL ;    INTEGER hHTTPHandle,;    STRING lpzReqMethod,;    STRING lpzPage,;    STRING lpzVersion,;    STRING lpzReferer,;    STRING lpzAcceptTypes,;    INTEGER dwFlags,;    INTEGER dwContextw     hHTTPResult=HttpOpenRequest(THIS.hHttpsession,;    lcVerb,;    tcPage,;    NULL,NULL,NULL,;    INTERNET_FLAG_RELOAD + ;    IIF(THIS.lsecurelink,INTERNET_FLAG_SECURE,0) + ;    this.nHTTPServiceFlags,0) …  And this fixes the issue at least for IE 9… In my FoxPro wwHttp class I now call this by default to never get bitten by this again… This solves the problem permanently for my HTTP client. I never want to see offline operation in an HTTP client API – it’s just too unpredictable in handling errors and the last thing you want is getting unpredictably stale data. Problem solved but this behavior is – well ugly.   • Offline installer for Windows 8?

    I have a computer repair service, and can see a few more people wanting Windows 8 updowngraded. Because of New Zealand's internet speeds it takes 1-2 hours to run the download part of the official Windows 8 upgrade tool. This means I have to go back to people the next day. I would like to keep an "offline" version of the Windows 8 upgrade tool on my flash drive, so I can avoid this inconvenience. Obviously it would still require a legit credit card etc, it just comes with the download part not needed. I cannot find such a tool. Does one exist?

  • Wireless printer going offline upon entering power save mode

    I recently bought a printer, Samsung ML1865W, a wireless laser printer. It works very well, wirelessly until after a while, it goes to power save mode when the printer goes offline. I then cannot connect to the printer (pinging the ip and various ports associated with it do not give any response) until I power cycle the printer. I have checked my wireless settings and my router, I have installed the printer software in WinXP, Win2000 and in Mac and the printer behaves just the same. Any ideas if the printer hardware itself is broken or that its something on my network/application side that's the culprit. If you own the printer, have you had any trouble like that at any time?

  • Offline Files (CSC) on Windows RT

    Windows RT does not have the Offline Files service. The Sync Center is also gone. Can it be enabled somehow? or can anyone recommend a replacement? My options are very limited on Windows 8.1 RT. The only thing it seems Microsoft is offering is something called Work Folders. These are only supported in Windows 8.1. I really want a more generic solution so that I can access files on OS X and Linux (like a samba share).

  • "Always available offline" option missing on one network drive in Windows 7

    My network setup at home has 2 network storage devices on the network. The one is for media content on a Popcorn Hour A-110 and the other is a D-Link DNS-320 in RAID 1 configuration for business files. When I access these network drives and right click a folder the following context menu appears for the A-110 device, but not for the D-link. I have tested this in both Windows 7 32bit and Windows Vista 64bit. In both instances the "Always available offline" option is only available for the A-110 storage device, and not for the D-link. How do I get this option for the D-link? Any advice or ideas are welcome.

    On some days I'm commuting 2hs (oneway) in the train. I don't have any mobile internet nor is there always WiFi service in the train. Because of security reasons I can't do any work in the train so I'm trying to work on my geek time. I'm looking for general solutions on how to do this (I'm on FireFox/Windows but I don't think it matters) Email works perfectly with gmail offline. It syncs directly when online and remembers complicated stuff. So far I used the ScrapBook plugin to store an website. It works good, but I have to download my favorite news page every day again - I want it to sync as soon as possible. It would even be more awesome if I could click a page on my desktop and my laptop would sync as soon as it has the chance. (edit: maybe the autosave plugin for scrapbook can do this) Similarily, I use the Downloadhelper plugin to download youtube vids, but I'd like something that automatically downloads videos from a given channel. Any tips are welcome. So far my early morning schedule is: wake up, power on laptop, make coffee, power off laptop and leave within 10 minutes (enough time for GMail to sync) but I can imagine a system where my laptop stays on during the night (or boots before I wake (and makes me coffee :])).
