  • Disable Offline Files (mobsync.exe) on Windows 7 Home

    This morning I was watching the CPU graph of a Windows 7 Home laptop and noticed that every few seconds, the CPU would spike several percent. I watched the processes and determined that it was mobsync.exe (Offline Files) that was the culprit. I tried the usual steps that Googling turns up, and clicking the Manage Offline Files link to bring up the Offline Files dialog to click Disable Synch does not work because the dialog will not display. This makes sense since everything I have read indicates that Offline Files is not even included/supported in the Home version, so I am at a loss as to why it is running at all, let alone why it is sucking up CPU cycles. (My best guess is that it was started when they pressed Win+X to access the Mobility Center.) Of course I can just kill mobsync, but it could always just come back. How/why would mobsync be running on a Home version and how can it be disabled (of course the Group Policy editor is not available on a Home version).

  • Software to cache a web application for use offline

    My boss quite regularly has to demo our web application to clients in a situation with no wifi available and sketchy 3G access, quite often the 3G lets him down. I have considered setting a copy of our server up in a virtual machine on his laptop so he could demo it offline, but I fear this will just introduce more headaches when he forgets how to boot the VM up. What I'd ideally like is an app that records you logging into a web app, saves copies of all the pages and ties the links and buttons you click up to offline copies of the pages it saves. So you could run through the demonstration you're going to give and have it cache the pages. When you then click the same buttons and links in offline mode it will present the relevant offline pages. Does such a thing exist? Can anyone recommend any alternative solutions to this problem? Thanks, Anthony

  • Routes for IIS Classic and Integrated Mode

         Introduction:             ASP.NET MVC Routing feature makes it very easy to provide clean URLs. You just need to configure routes in global.asax file to create an application with clean URLs. In most cases you define routes works in IIS 6, IIS 7 (or IIS 7.5) Classic and Integrated mode. But in some cases your routes may only works in IIS 7 Integrated mode, like in the case of using extension less URLs in IIS 6 without a wildcard extension map. So in this article I will show you how to create different routes which works in IIS 6 and IIS 7 Classic and Integrated mode.       Description:             Let's say that you need to create an application which must work both in Classic and Integrated mode. Also you have no control to setup a wildcard extension map in IIS. So you need to create two routes. One with extension less URL for Integrated mode and one with a URL with an extension for Classic Mode.   routes.MapRoute( "DefaultClassic", // Route name "{controller}.aspx/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults ); routes.MapRoute( "DefaultIntegrated", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults );               Now you have set up two routes, one for Integrated mode and one for Classic mode. So routes for Integrated mode only matched when the application is running on Integrated mode and routes for Classic mode only matched when the application is not running on Integrated mode.       Summary:             During developing applications, sometimes developers are not sure that whether this application will be host on IIS 6 or IIS 7 (or IIS 7.5) Integrated mode or Classic mode. So it's a good idea to create separate routes for both Classic and Integrated mode so that your application will use extension less URLs where possible and use URLs with an extension where it is not possible to use extension less URLs. An application means: 1 Where there is connection (online mode) between the browser and an remote application server: the application runs in typical web-based mode the application stores necessary data in offline storage, to be used in offline mode (2) the application sync/push data (captured during offline mode) back to the server when it is resumed from offline mode back to online mode 2 Where there is no connection (offline mode) between the browser and an remote application server: the application will still run (javascript?) the application will present data (which is stored offline) to user the application can accept input from user (and store/append in offline storage) Is this possible?   • Install XP Mode with VirtualBox Using the VMLite Plugin

    Would you like to run XP Mode, but prefer Sun’s VirtualBox for virtualization?  Thanks to the free VMLite plugin, you can quickly and easily run XP Mode in or alongside VirtualBox. Yesterday we showed you one method to install XP Mode in VirtualBox, unfortunately in that situation you lose XP’s activation, and it isn’t possible to reactivate it. Today we show you a tried and true method for running XP mode in VirtualBox and integrating it seamlessly with Windows 7. Note: You need to have Windows 7 Professional or above to use XP Mode in this manner. Install XP Mode Make sure you’re logged in with Administrator rights for the entire process. The first thing you’ll want to do is install XP Mode on your system (link below). You don’t need to install Windows Virtual PC. Go through and install XP Mode using the defaults. Install VirtualBox Next you’ll need to install VirtualBox 3.1.2 or higher if it isn’t installed already. If you have an older version of VirtualBox installed, make sure to update it. During setup you’re notified that your network connection will be reset. Check the box next to Always trust software from “Sun Microsystems, Inc.” then click Install.   Setup only takes a couple of minutes, and does not require a reboot…which is always nice. Install VMLite XP Mode Plugin The next thing we’ll need to install is the VMLite XP Mode Plugin. Again Installation is simple following the install wizard. During the install like with VirtualBox you’ll be asked to install the device software. After it’s installed go to the Start menu and run VMLite Wizard as Administrator. Select the location of the XP Mode Package which by default should be in C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode. Accept the EULA…and notice that it’s meant for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Next, name the machine, choose the install folder, and type in a password. Select if you want Automatic Updates turned on or not. Wait while the process completes then click Finish.   The VMLite XP Mode will set up to run the first time. That is all there is to this section. You can run XP Mode from within the VMLite Workstation right away. XP Mode is fully activated already, and the Guest Additions are already installed, so there’s nothing else you need to do!  XP Mode is the whole way ready to use. Integration with VirtualBox Since we installed the VMLite Plugin, when you open VirtualBox you’ll see it listed as one of your machines and you can start it up from here.   Here we see VMLite XP Mode running in Sun VirtualBox. Integrate with Windows 7 To integrate it with Windows 7 click on Machine \ Seamless Mode…   Here you can see the XP menu and Taskbar will be placed on top of Windows 7. From here you can access what you need from XP Mode.   Here we see XP running on Virtual Box in Seamless Mode. We have the old XP WordPad sitting next to the new Windows 7 version of WordPad. This works so seamlessly you forget if your working in XP or Windows 7. In this example we have Windows Home Server Console running in Windows 7, while installing MSE from IE 6 in XP Mode. At the top of the screen you will still have access to the VMs controls.   You can click the button to exit Seamless Mode, or simply hit the right “CTRL+L” Conclusion This is a very slick way to run XP Mode in VirtualBox on any machine that doesn’t have Hardware Virtualization. This method also doesn’t lose the XP Mode activation and is actually extremely easy to set up.   • My code works in Debug mode, but not in Release mode.

    Hi, I have a code in Visual Studio 2008 in C++ that works with files just by fopen and fclose. Everything works perfect in Debug mode. and I have tested with several datasets. But it doesn't work in release mode. It crashes all the time. I have turned off all the optimizations, also there is no dependency to anything(in the linker), and also I have set these: Optimization: Disabled(/Od) Keep Unreferenced Data. Do Not Remove Redundant Optimize for Windows98: NO I still keep wondering how it should not work under these circumstances. What else should I turn off to let it works as in debug mode? I think if it works in release mode but not in debug mode, it might be a coding fault but the other way looks weird. isn't it? I appreciate any help. --Nima

  • Save static version of a webpage to be available offline

    Is there a way to save a webpage as static HTML, available for offline viewing, editing etc.? I want to remove all javascript files. Leave only HTML, CSS and images. For example, if this web page has a Facebook Like button, I want the image of the button to be part of the HTML as a regular image (and not be loaded as some Javascript code runs after I load the page). I'm trying to prepare a webpage for an offline demo. When I use the standard "save as HTML complete" like tools, all the Javascript is saved as well, and when viewed offline, all the dynamic content is blanks. Note- I don't expect the dynamic content to work, of course, with no Javascript. I just want the web page to LOOK as though it was just loaded from the interwebs. Thanks, Tal.

  • ICQ offline messages (do not show up)

    Hi there, I have a weird problem with offline messages: I use Adium on 2 Macs (home and office) and Beejive (iPhone) for connecting to ICQ and other protocols. When someone sends me an offline messages I expect them to show up the next time I login with any of my 3 devices. But thats not the case. Recently some show up at the office, some at home and some on my iPhone – couldnt figure out any logic behind it, seems rather random. I thought for a while that it depends on the last device i have been logged in with. But thats not the case either. A friend can send me offline Messages during the weekend, i can login with my Mac at home or iPhone, yet in some cases it only shows up when logging in from office. Weird. It really freaks me out – and no, i can't make 'em go to jabber or the like. Anyone experiencing a similar problem?

    I am trying to get all users of particular notebooks to make the users h drive offline. i know you can do it manually but is there a way to set this value somewhere so that users dont have to do it themselves? I am running 2008r2 domain controllers and windows 7 clients. I have folder redirection enabled but i want to make the users h: available to them when they are offline. I know the group policies are located in the computer configurationPoliciesadministrative templatesNetwork but there doesnt seem to be any place to select which folders/drives will be offline files without a users input. Even if there is another method not through GP. Thanks

  • My notebook goes offline automatically after some time

    I have about 3 computers and 1 windows 2003 server in office and 1 network printer (HP LJ 2840). My network printer is installed on the server. I an sharing this printer on all clients with windows XP. All other computers are fine only 1 HP laptop. When I start that HP laptop the printer works fine but after some time, printer goes offline and I can't print until I restart the laptop. When that laptop goes to offline mode, I can work on that laptop, I can use shared network drives, I can ping server but it shows offline mode icon in Task bar status area. If i use \\servername I can see the server's shared items and if i go to printers I can't see any printer... I try my best to solve this issue, but I can't. Thanks

    Thunderbird says "You are currently offline. Do you want to go online to get new messages?" The menu item File-Work Offline is not checked. Is there another "offline" setting? Back story: I moved my Thunderbird profile from another user to my new account today following the instructions here. (it's down as I type). This may be a red herring. I have been sending and receiving happily in the last few hours since - so I remain confused. (Windows 7 Enterprise).

    Google’s latest cloud offering Google Drive provides 5GB of free storage to let you store documents, spread sheets, photos and other stuff and access them using a variety of devices – PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets. You can also set up offline access to Google Drive so that you can access files on the move even if you don’t have access to internet connection. To access Google Drive offline you need Chrome browser and here are the simple steps to be followed for setting up. Step 1:  Login to Google Drive and click the gear icon in the upper right of your window. Step 2: Select Set up Docs offline from the drop-down menu. The “Set up offline viewing of Google Docs” dialog will appear Step 3:  Authorize Google Chrome to store your Google Drive content by clicking on “Allow offline docs” and then install “Docs Chrome web app” by clicking on “Install from Chrome web store”. You’ll be taken to the Chrome web store, where you’ll need to click Install on the right-hand side of the browser window. Step 4: Once the app is installed, you’ll be taken to a Chrome page with the Google Docs app icon. Click the icon to go back to your Documents List. Google Chrome take few minutes to prepare Google Drive for offline access by downloading all the files to your local computer. Once it’s completed, you can access Google Drive files offline. To access files of Google Drive offline point your Chrome browser to drive.google.com. When offline your Google Docs stored on Google Drive are available in view only mode. You can open Google Documents, Spread sheets & Presentations and see the content but you can’t edit them.

  • Installing the Updated XP Mode which Requires no Hardware Virtualization

    Good news for those of you who have a computer without Hardware Virtualization, Microsoft had dropped the requirement so you can now run XP Mode on your machine. Here we take a look at how to install it and getting working on your PC. Microsoft has dropped the requirement that your CPU supports Hardware Virtualization for XP Mode in Windows 7. Before this requirement was dropped, we showed you how to use SecureAble to find out if your machine would run XP Mode. If it couldn’t, you might have gotten lucky with turning Hardware Virtualization on in your BIOS, or getting an update that would enable it. If not, you were out of luck or would need a different machine. Note: Although you no longer need Hardware Virtualization, you still need Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate version of Windows 7. Download Correct Version of XP Mode For this article we’re installing it on a Dell machine that doesn’t support Hardware Virtualization on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version. The first thing you’ll want to do is go to the XP Mode website and select your edition of Windows 7 and language. Then there are three downloads you’ll need to get from the page. Windows XP Mode, Windows Virtual PC, and the Windows XP Mode Update (All Links Below). Windows genuine validation is required before you can download the XP Mode files. To make the validation process easier you might want to use IE when downloading these files and validating your version of Windows. Installing XP Mode After validation is successful the first thing to download and install is XP Mode, which is easy following the wizard and accepting the defaults. The second step is to install KB958559 which is Windows Virtual PC.   After it’s installed, a reboot is required. After you’ve come back from the restart, you’ll need to install KB977206 which is the Windows XP Mode Update.   After that’s installed, yet another restart of your system is required. After the update is configured and you return from the second reboot, you’ll find XP Mode in the Start menu under the Windows Virtual PC folder. When it launches accept the license agreement and click Next. Enter in your log in credentials… Choose if you want Automatic Updates or not… Then you’re given a message saying setup will share the hardware on your computer, then click Start Setup. While setup completes, you’re shown a display of what XP Mode does and how to use it. XP Mode launches and you can now begin using it to run older applications that are not compatible with Windows 7. Conclusion This is a welcome news for many who want the ability to use XP Mode but didn’t have the proper hardware to do it. The bad news is users of Home versions of Windows still don’t get to enjoy the XP Mode feature officially. If you routinely visit the same sites using Incognito Mode, Ghost Incognito allows you to flag domains.   • Can't resolve offline file conflicts

    We use roaming profiles on our Server 2008 R2 domain, with folder redirection for 'desktop', 'my documents' and 'application data'. But as our network is split across two sites, we have one file server at each site, which are configured to use domain based DFS namespaces and DFS replication to keep things in sync. The DFS path for the replication folder is as follows: \\domain\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> The real paths are \\site-1-server\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> and \\site-2-server\folderredirection$\<username>\<redirected-folder-name> As our users all switch between sites (sometimes several time per day), our folder redirection policy has to redirect to the DFS roots rather than hardcoded to a specific server. Both DFS and DFS-R have been proven to be working perfectly. On our laptops, we use offline files for the redirected folders, and this also works fine, however the problem is as follows: When conflicts occur in offline files, it is impossible to resolve the conflicts. I'm given the usual conflict resolution options (i.e. 'Ignore', 'Keep Both', 'Keep network' and 'Keep local'), however, not one of these options will resolve any conflict, yet no error is produced. We only use offline files on laptops, which have either Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 Professional installed. The problem is not specific to any one laptop, it affects every laptop and every conflicting file in exactly the same way. I would have thought the set up we have is common for companies that have multiple sites, so I'm hoping someone will have seen this before?

  • Folder Redirection/Offline Files on Win 7 | Folders are empty when not connected to the domain

    I've been struggling with this issue for days and cannot seem to find anyone else with a similar issue. I will note first that I have tried using both roaming profiles and the group policy setting for force local profiles.... now onto the problem. What I am trying to do is have my teachers accounts log onto their laptops using their domain credentials. Once logged in their desktop and documents are redirected to a network share //server/redirects/documents/. This works fine when the computer is connected to the domain network. Offline File Sync works great and caches the files locally. However this all breaks down when the user logs in when the computer is no longer connected to the domain network. When the user logs in the desktop and documents are empty. What I find very odd is if I manually go to the offline file folder all of the files are there, The group policy folder redirection does not execute to the offline folder. Is this by Design? (It does not work like this on Vista, I have the exact same group policy settings set on vista machines and it works flawlessly). Additional Info When I look at the event log there is no folder redirection events at all when user logs in and is not connected to the network. In addition a new profile is create in c:/users/username.domain.00x. Every log in creates an additional profile. There is a event that states that a registry files were still in use. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Disable work offline in Internet Explorer 8

    I am using Windows 7, and IE8. Every time I have GMail open in IE8, and I resume from sleep, I get the question about working offline - even if at that momoent the wireless connection is available. This is particularly sad, because all browsing is stopped until I dismiss that dialog, that may be hidden below other windows. As I am not using offline browsing at all, is it possible to disable the functionality altogether, so that I no longer get the question? A bit like in Firefox, where I simply get the error message with page unavailable. I have googled a bit, but no luck so far. Even a direct modification of the registry would be fine, for me.

  • Dell printer goes offline after second print job.

    Dell printer goes offline(server connection) after second print job. Although the printer's display says it is ready. If you turn off then on the printer you can send one job and goes back offline(server connection) on the next print job. We have multiple Dell 2330dn printers installed through a print server, only one of the printers is experiencing this problem. Two different users. Two different machines. Two different operating systems (win7 and Vista). The computers have been reset. Dell printers have web interface if this helps (through IP address). Thanks for any help!

  • Making folder available offline - Access denied (Windows XP)

    I have a drive on a server called "filestore" This has a folder called "users" in here, theres is a "users" folder. In there are folders such as - jsmith, jblogs, abrown - which correspond to usernames of our active directory. When a user logs on, the H: drive is mapped to their above mentioned folder - for example //filestore/users/jsmith I am trying to make one of these folders available offline in Windows XP. when i do so, i get an access is denied error. according to this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461 i need to make the root folder have read access to the users. This means, however, all the users will be able to get in all the folders (if they browse to //filestore/users/) How can I still achieve offline files for that particular users "h:" drive, and still have the other folders secured?
