  Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

• Concepts: Channel vs. Stream

  Hello, is there a conceptual difference between the terms "Channel" and "Stream"? Do the terms require/determine, for example, the allowed number of concurrent Consumers or Producers? I'm currently developing a Channel/Stream of DataFlowVariables, which may be written by one producer and read by one consumer as the implementation is destructive/mutable. Would this be a Channel or Stream, is there any difference at all? Thanks

• Well tested C/C++ lock free queue?

  I am looking for a well-tested, publicly available C/C++ implementation of a lock free queue. I need at least multiple-producers/single-consumer functionality. Multiple-consumers is even better, if exists. I'm targetting VC's _Interlocked... intrinsics, though anything which is straight forward to port would be fine. Could anyone give any pointers?

• Processor speeds on my machine don't live up to manufacturer hype

  Why am I not seeing the promised speed claims of processor manufacturers on my computer? Producers of processors claim that their product can perform so many thousands (or millions) of operations per second. And yet on my machine (4GB, 3500hz), the typical program (Word, Visual Studio etc.) takes at least 10 seconds to start. I've formatted my hard drive and ticked all the necessary boxes to optimize my machine and yet I'm not seeing the promised speeds. Say it takes Outlook ten seconds to load. How many millions of operations does it really go through in order to start up?

• IASA Sessions on Social Networking Note Influence of Millennial Generation on Insurance Technology

Social networking continues to be a buzzword for many in the industry. Erin Esurance, the Geico Gecko and even Nationwide's "The World's Greatest Spokesperson in the World" all have a prominent presence in the social media world. • The Open Data Protocol

  Well, day 2 of the MIX10 conference did not disappoint.  The keynote speakers introduced the preview release of IE9, which looks really cool and quick, and Visual Studio 2010 RC that is scheduled to RTM on April 12th.  It seemed to have a lot of improvements aimed at making developers more productive.  Here are the current links to these two offerings: Internet Explorer 9 – Platform Preview Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 – Release Candidate While both of these were interesting, the demos that really blew me away today centered around the work being done with The Open Data Protocol, or OData for short!  OData is a recommended standard being pushed by Microsoft that uses a REST based interface to interact with various types of data in a uniform manner.  Data producers then provide the data to consumer in either ATOM or JSON formats as requested by the client application. • Can Near Field Communications (NFC) Benefit your Supply Chain?

  Leading firms continue to leverage the latest tools and technologies to drive performance especially around minimizing transaction costs. With razor thin margins in manufacturing and distribution, the leading producers are resorting to Near Field Communications to gain efficiencies.  In this week’s CIO magazine (Apr1, 2012, pg.30, see http://www.cio.com)  Lauren Brousell talks of the things you need to know to make a more informed decision with NFC.  Sandy Shen of Gartner says NFC appeals because "it supports any services that requires data transfer and authentication' 1. NFC is Cheap and Easy - short range transmitting technology connecting smartphones to data transfer. 2. Adoption Seems Inevitable - more merchants will use NCF for payments in the futures. Wallets are becoming obsolete. 3. It's a Hot Potato for Enterprise - Business with credit card companies and cell phone providers are debating who handles the billing process. 4. It's in use Overseas. Japan uses FeliCa to pay by smartphone. In the US, billing agreements are causing territorial conflict. 5. Security Risks Come Standard. As people lose HH devices, security will be an ongoing concern. Credentials and timeout features and alleviate to some extent. My prediction: In 5 years, we won't have wallets in our pockets.  Our secure and all-powerful smart phones will be our electronic portable banks and execute the transaction for us based on our preferences and propensities and electronically execute the transaction for the supply chain.

• Public Speaking in software development.

  Greetings my fellow cubicle dwellers. I've found my role gradually change from "feature-maintainer" to "feature-developer". While much of the former would consist of fixing and/or updating an existing feature (and quietly grumbling about it's implementation with complete naiveté), in this new role I find: Have to communicate with immediate management to define the development requirements to turnaround the new feature Have to communicate with design to determine the user requirements of the new feature Have to communicate with QA to determine test sets for the new feature, as well as it's current state during development. Have to communicate with producers/project-managers to define remaining turnaround time as well as updates in development requirements. and finally, have to occasionally communicate with upper-management to defend the new feature and demonstrate it's minimized risk to the upcoming release. The last item is key here, and this took me a couple occasions to completely realize. In all, though, it becomes very apparent that communication skills ARE important, even or especially as such for developers who feel they 'own' the feature they're working on. All of this said, I recognize it's importance and would like to improve my skills in this area further. I enjoy one-on-one communication but find I tend to stutter a bit when speaking to any group larger than a few people I know well. Where can I find good resources to improve my own communication skills?

• Message Queue: Which one is the best scenario?

  I write a web crawler. The crawler has 2 steps: get a html page then parse the page I want to use message queue to improve performance and throughput. I think 2 scenarios: scenario 1: structure: urlProducer -> queue1 -> urlConsumer -> queue2 -> parserConsumer urlProducer: get a target url and add it to queue1 urlConsumer: according to the job info, get the html page and add it to queue2 parserConsumer: according to the job info, parse the page scenario 2: structure: urlProducer -> queue1 -> urlConsumer parserProducer-> queue2 -> parserConsumer urlProducer : get a target url and add it to queue1 urlConsumer: according to the job info, get the html page and write it to db parserProducer: get the html page from db and add it to queue2 parserConsumer: according to the job info, parse the page There are multiple producers or consumers in each structure. scenario1 likes a chaining call. It's difficult to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. scenario2 decouples queue1 and queue2. It's easy to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. I'm not sure the notion is correct. Which one is the best scenario? Or other scenarios? Thanks~

• How ReSharper saved the day

  The Back Story: As a Microsoft MVP awardee, one of the many benefits is free software, books, and various products.  Some of the producers/manufacturers ask for reviews in exchange, others just ask for a brief mention (nothing is ever really free).  But considering that some of the products are essential to my everyday computing, I never mind mentioning their names and evangelizing their products. One of these tools just happened to save me a countless number of hours.  With the release of Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2010, JetBrains released their new 5.0 version of ReSharper. The Story: My specialty is Visual Basic development.  I am not, and probably will never be a C# developer.  As such, trying to figure out how to debug a C# project, that was written 2 years ago by a contract developer, let’s just say it’s a painful process. I have a special class for config file reading and writing, written in C#.  I kept getting exceptions when the reader would get to a line that had an xml comment in it.  It took me a couple of hours to narrow down where it was happening and why, but I couldn’t figure out the best way to fix it.  It was a for loop that was implicitly casting the type of the variable.  I knew I need to explicitly cast the variable type, but only after the type was verified.  So after I finally got some of the code written, ReSharper gave me some suggestions on how to write the code better. One of the ways was to safely cast the variable into the type I wanted.  Blammo, no more exceptions in a way I hadn’t anticipated.  Instead of having to check the type before I cast it.  Beautiful, simple, and taught me a better way to code C#. Kudos JetBrains … now if it only worked better with VB (then it could be called ReBasic, ReVB, RE???)

• Microsoft Changes Developer Account Registration Requirements

  Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that Microsoft seems to have changed the requirements for Corporate accounts.  These requirements were not in effect when I originally setup the account for the company that I work for.  We also recently had our corporate account canceled without explanation and are in the process of working to get it reinstated.  This all seems to revolve around rules to increase confidence that in the producers of content.  They are now having Symantec validate a company based on legal documents. In the past there have been problems with getting credit cards accepted.  We have had to setup new Live IDs to satisfy whatever glitch the system had or unexplainable requirement.  I am hoping that in the time that has elapsed these problems have been resolved. In truth I can’t say that these new requirements weren’t always in place, but it is getting frustrating to help clients setup accounts.  I am encourage that they have taken steps to safeguard the consumer from Joe-fly-by-night, but they also need to make sure that the process doesn’t become so complex that it drives away companies from participating in the store.  We will have to keep an eye on this as things evolve. del.icio.us Tags: Windows Phone Development,Windows 8 Development,Windows Phone,Windows 8,Registration,Corporate Accounts

• Designing communications for extensibility

  I am working on the design stages of an application that will a) collect data from various sources (in my case that's scientific data from serial ports), keeping track of the age of the data, b) generate real-time statistics (e.g. running averages) c) display, record, and otherwise handle the data (and statistics). I anticipate that I will be adding both data producers and consumers over time, and would like to design this application abstractly so that I will be able to trivially add functionality with a small amount of interface code. What I'm stumbling on is deciding what communication infrastructure I should use to handle the interfaces. In particular, how should I make the processed data and statistics available to multiple consumers? Some things I've considered: Writing to several named pipes (variable number). Each consumer reads from one of them. Using FUSE to make a userspace filesystem where a read() returns the latest line of data even if another process has already read it. Making a TCP server, and having consumers connect and request data individually. Simply writing the consumers as part of the same program that aggregates the data. So I would like to hear your all's advice on deciding how to interface these functions in the best way to keep them separate and allow room for extenstions.

• robocode engine: how to design (write) the runtime engine -- the robot world

  IBM has (had) a free learn-Java program called RoboCode, in which custom robots could be written that would then do battle in a 2D space. I would like to write the environment that supports such robots, but don't know what pattern or design to use. Each robot is a thread. Each thread is given a certain (indeterminate) amount of run-time by the JRE. A robot world engine would start by building a list of the players/robots, then enter a loop that allows each player in turn to do whatever it likes: move forward, turn left, fire toward the northwest corner, whatever. Each robot is also informed of events of interest: an enemy or several enemies are within range, it has been hit by a bullet, etc. The combination of handling threads that are also event listeners (are they also producers?) confuses me; it seems that there's more to the game engine. Even some general ideas would help. TIA.

• How to use IObservable/IObserver with ConcurrentQueue or ConcurrentStack

  I realized that when I am trying to process items in a concurrent queue using multiple threads while multiple threads can be putting items into it, the ideal solution would be to use the Reactive Extensions with the Concurrent data structures. My original question is at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2997797/while-using-concurrentqueue-trying-to-dequeue-while-looping-through-in-parallel/ So I am curious if there is any way to have a LINQ (or PLINQ) query that will continuously be dequeueing as items are put into it. I am trying to get this to work in a way where I can have n number of producers pushing into the queue and a limited number of threads to process, so I don't overload the database. If I could use Rx framework then I expect that I could just start it, and if 100 items are placed in within 100ms, then the 20 threads that are part of the PLINQ query would just process through the queue. There are three technologies I am trying to work together: Rx Framework (Reactive LINQ) PLING System.Collections.Concurrent structures

• .net 4.0 concurrent queue dictionary

  I would like to use the new concurrent collections in .NET 4.0 to solve the following problem. The basic data structure I want to have is a producer consumer queue, there will be a single consumer and multiple producers. There are items of type A,B,C,D,E that will be added to this queue. Items of type A,B,C are added to the queue in the normal manner and processed in order. However items of type D or E can only exist in the queue zero or once. If one of these is to be added and there already exists another of the same type that has not yet been processed then this should update that other one in-place in the queue. The queue position would not change (i.e. would not go to the back of the queue) after the update. Which .NET 4.0 classes would be best for this?

• Open Source Queuing Solutions for peek, mark as done and then remove

  I am looking at open source queuing platforms that allow me do the following: I have multiple producers, multiple consumers putting data into a queue in a multithreaded environment with the specific use case: I want the ability for consumers to be able do the following Peek at a message from the queue(which should mark as the message as invisible on the queue so that other consumers cannot consume the same message) The consumer works on the message consumed and if it is able to do the work successfully, it marks the message as consumed which should permanently delete it from the queue. If the consumer dies abruptly after marking the message as consumed or fails to acknowledge successful consumption after a certain timeout, the message is made visible on the queue again so that another consumer can pick it up. I've been looking at RabbitMQ, hornetQ, ActiveMQ but I'm not sure I can get this functionality out of the box, any recommendations on a system that gives me this functionality?

Is it possible to influenece on the order of displayed fields somehow?

• Using a backwards relation (i.e FOO_set) for ModelChoiceField in Django

  I have a model called Movie, which has a ManyToManyField called director to a model called Person, and I'm trying to create a form with ModelChoiceField like so: class MovieSearchForm(forms.Form): producer = forms.ModelChoiceField(label='Produced by', queryset=movies.models.Person.producer_set, required=False) but this seems to be failing to compile (I'm getting a ViewDoesNotExist exception for the view that uses the form, but it goes away if I just replace the queryset with all the person objects), I'm guessing because '.producer_set' is being evaluated too 'early'. How can I get this work? here are the relevant parts of the movie/person classes: class Person(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=100) class Movie(models.Model): ... producer = models.ForeignKey(Person, related_name="producers") director = models.ForeignKey(Person, related_name="directors") What I'm trying to do is get ever Person who is used in the producer field of some Movie.

• The 2010 Life Insurance Conference - Washington, DC

  How ironic to be in Washington, DC on April 15 - TAX DAY! Fortunately, I avoided IRS offices and attended the much more enjoyable 2010 Life Insurance Conference, presented by LIMRA, LOMA SOA and ACLI. This year's conference offered a variety of tracks focused on the Life Industry including Distribution/Marketing Marketing, Administration, Actuarial/Product Development, Regulatory, Reinsurance and Strategic Management. President and CEO of the ACLI, Frank Keating, opened the event by moderating a session titled "Executive Viewpoint on new Opportunities." Guest speakers included Ted Mathas, President and CEO of NY Life, and John Walters, President and CEO of Hartford Life. Both speakers were insightful as they shared the challenges and opportunities each company faces and the key role life insurance companies play in our society and the global economy. There were several key themes that were reiterated in multiple sessions throughout the conference - the economy is on the rebound, optimism is growing, consumer spending is up and an uptick in employment is likely to follow. The threat of a double dip recession has seemed to passed. Good news for our industry, and welcomed by all in attendance. Of special interest to me, given my background, was some research shared by both The Nolan Group and Novarica in separate sessions. Both firms indicate that policy administration upgrades/replacement projects remain a top priority in 2010. Carriers continue to invest in modern technology. Modern ultra-configurable systems enable carriers to switch from a waterfall to an agile project methodology, which often entails a "culture change" within an organization. Other themes heard throughout the two-day event: Virtually all sessions focused on People, Process and Technology! Product innovation, agility and speed to market are as important as ever. Social Networks and Twitter are becoming more popular ways of communicating with both field and dispersed staff. Several sessions focused on the application, new business and underwriting process. Companies continue looking for ways to increase market agility, accelerate speed to market, address cost issues and improve service levels across the process. They recognize the need to ease the way to do business with both producers and consumers. Author and economic futurist Jeff Thredgold presented an entertaining, informative and humorous general session on Wednesday afternoon that focused on the US and global economies, financial markets and retirement outlook. Thredgold did not disappoint anyone with his message! The Thursday morning general session was keynoted by Therese Vaughan (CEO - NAIC) and Thomas Crawford (President of C2 Group). Both speakers gave a poignant view of the recent financial crisis and discussed "Putting the Pieces Back Together." Therese spoke of the recent financial turmoil and likely changes to regulations to the financial services sector. Tom's topics focused on economic recovery and the political environment in Washington, and how that impacts our industry. Next year's event will be April 11-13, 2011 in Las Vegas. ADF Task Flow - Overview (Part 1) This 90 minute recording introduces the concept of ADF unbounded and bounded task flows, as well as other ADF Controller features. The session starts with an overview of unbounded task flows, bounded task flows and the different activities that exist for developers to build complex application flows. Exception handling and the Train navigation model is also covered in this first part of a two part series. By example of developing a sample application, the recording guides viewers through building unbounded and bounded task flows.
