• How to forward an Internet connection to another network?

  Can somebody please make a shot & sweet tutorial telling how to forward an Internet connection to different network interfaces in Ubuntu...? This is the idea: I'm using a 3G usb modem to get Internet on my laptop ,which is: ppp0 IP=10.225.174.70 My Wifi device is: wlan0 MAC=78:e4:00:d4:3d:85 These devices are determined from ifconfig command. I want to share ppp0's internet connection with wlan0 device, so I can connect any other device to wlan0 and browse internet from that device. Making a Hotspot using Network settings GUI doesn't do the trick because the other device won't receive Internet, it just connects to wlan0. I heard iptables can do this, but I'm totally confused by the alien commands seen online. I'm no expert in networking. Please compose a clear & simple answer using the above devices. This is a huge annoying problem for iPhone & tablet users came to Ubuntu from Windows.

  For a very long time, I'm experiencing this bug in Compiz. It makes my windows flash, when rotating the desktop cube. None of the animations work properly execpt the Wobbly windows. However the temporary fix I found on the bug page helped me to reduce the effects, but it's not 100% perfect. Now they have totally fixed the bug in Compiz 0.9.8 for Quantal. I really need to get the official fix on my Ubuntu 12.04. Don't the LTS versions get bug fixes? Sometimes my desktop cube/cylinder appears like this : None of this happened in Lucid Lynx :( Thanks for having a look.....

• How to control an Ubuntu PC from another Ubuntu PC over Internet?

  There are two Ubuntu PCs called A and B. A and B are connected to the Internet using two separated Internet connections. (In my case, two mobile broadband connections ppp0 x2 ) Each connection has a unique & static public IP address. What I need is to control A computer's cursor, using B computer's mouse, over the Internet. In both computers, I have allowed other users to control my computer in Desktop Sharing preferences, as below: When I try to connect to A from the B using Remmina Remote Desktop Client, it refuses to connect after trying for a while. These are my settings: I expect this to be done from an available open source software, not from TeamViewer. I found this guide harder to understand. Please provide me clear instructions... I have seen couple of cool videos done on Linux platform, most likely to be Ubuntu. How Linux is Built - Linux Foundation Ubuntu 12.10 Beta Overview - OMG! Ubuntu What is the magic application they are using to composit those videos..? Can upcoming LightWorks workout these effects...? • How do you learn a new programming language?

  I am C++ developer with some good experience on it. When I try to learn a new language ( have tried Java, C#, python, perl till now) I usually pickup a book and try to read it. But the problem with this is that these books typically start with some very basic programming concepts such as loops, operators etc and it starts to get very boring soon. Also, I feel I would get only theoeritcal knowledge without any practical knowledge on writing the code. So my question is how do you tacke these situations? do you just skip the chapters if its explaining something basic? also, do you have some standard set of programs that you will try to write in every new programming language you try to learn?

• Falied installing ATI X.Org binary driver!! (ATI Radeon HD 5400)

  The open source driver worked well with the fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04, but it drains my laptop battery faster. So I installed the proprietary driver from jockey-gtk. It gave me this error message at the end of the installation: Here is the jockey.log After restarting the computer, I lost all the compositing animations. Compiz visual effects don't work. There is a black boarder around Docky. Please somebody help me...! Thanks!

  i use a lenovo y560 and has ubunto 12.04 and win 7 installed when i boot into ubunto i find that the ati car is always on which drains the battery and overheats the system is there any to switch off the ati graphics and use intel hd in ubuntu ati hd 5730 is the graphics card that i use and it has switchable graphics in it. in bios the only two options for video adapter is discrete and switchable after installing ati driver from amd website i am getting a commamd prompt as log in screen first error message comes as Your system is running in low-graphics mode with options to run in low graphics mode this time reconfigure exit all three options i am stuck i need to manually reboot the system

• mismatch of version of libkdcraw20 and libkdcraw-data

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. When I'm installlin digiKam, I'm getting a mismatch in the versions of libkdcraw20 and libkdcraw-data wanted by it and that available in the repositories. It wants version 4.8.5-0ubuntu0.2 (or in other words that is the latest version according to synaptic) but the available one is 4.8.5-0ubuntu0.3 in both cases. Is there a work-around? Or how do I request the Ubuntu managers to rectify this? addenda On Synaptic i selected digikam to be installed. it downloaded all the dependencies but the 2 in question were not found - the message it gave "W: Failed to fetch security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libk/libkdcraw/… 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.13 80]". I google-searched the 2 files in the repositories to find that the version available there is ubuntu0.3 instead of ubuntu0.2.

• Design for future changes or solve the problem at hand

  While writing the code or during design do you try to generalize the problem at the first instance itself or try to solve that very specific problem. I am asking this because, trying to generalize the problem tends to complicate the things (which may not be necessary) and on the otherhand it will be very difficult to extend the specific solution if there is a change in the requirement. I guess the solution is to find the middle path which is easier said than done. How do you tackle this type of problem ? If you start generalizing it at what point of time you know that this much of generalization is sufficient ?

• Failed to install the proprietary display driver, Compiz crashed!

  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 I was using the default open source driver with Gnome classic, but when I upgraded to the closed sourced one using jockey-gtk/additional drivers everything messed up! It failed to activate the driver. Here is the error log. Wobbly windows or any other compiz effect won't work now. I can't even move a window! I'm on Precise Pangolin, Kernel-3.2.0-31-generic-pae Please Help! :( Update: I think my driver is installed even jockey doesn't show it. Compiz effects are working in Unity desktop... but I want it on Gnome Classic.

• Repairing inconsistent pages in database

  We have a SQL 2000 DB. The server crashed due to Raid array failure. Now when we run DBCC CHECKDB, we get an error that there are 27 consistency errors in 9 pages. When we run DBCC PAGE on these pages, we get this: Msg 8939, Level 16, State 106, Line 1 Table error: Object ID 1397580017, index ID 2, page (1:8404521). Test (m_freeCnt == freeCnt) failed. Values are 2 and 19. Msg 8939, Level 16, State 108, Line 1 Table error: Object ID 1397580017, index ID 2, page (1:8404521). Test (emptySlotCnt == 0) failed. Values are 1 and 0. Since the indicated index is non-clustered and is created by a unique constarint that includes 2 columns, we tried dropping and recreating the index. This resulted in the following error: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX terminated because a duplicate key was found for index ID 2. Most significant primary key is '3280'. The statement has been terminated. However running Select var_id,result_on from tests group by var_id,result_on having count(*)>1 returns 0 rows. Here is what we are planning to do: Restore a pre-server crash copy of the DB and run DBCC CHECKDB If that returns clean, then restore again with no recovery Apply all subequent TLOG backups Stop production app, take a tail log backup and apply that too Drop prod DB and rename the freshly restored DB to make it prod Start prod app Could someone please punch holes in this approach? Maybe, suggest a different approach? What we need is minimum downtime. SQL 2000 DB Size 94 GB The table that has corrupt pages has 460 Million+ rows of data Thanks for the help. Raj

• iPad: SplitView does not rotate

  I have the following setup: A subclass of UISplitViewController that creates the master and detail view controllers in the constructor. Master and Detail view controllers that both override shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation to return `YES'. Detail view controller implements the UISplitViewControllerDelegate protocol and deals with the popover. I am observing two weird issues that might be interrelated: When the split view comes up (in portrait mode - default on simulator), the Master view is visible. It should not be. When I rotate the simulator, the view does not "right" itself. My UISplitViewController subclass does not override shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation. However, both master and details view controllers do and return YES. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Is this a simulator bug? Thanks. -Raj

• TTPhotoViewController: Images not loading until swipe

  Hi, I am trying to implement TTPhotoViewController in a sample iPad application. I have implemented properly TTPhotoSource and TTPhoto protocols. The TTPhotoViewController does show image, but not until swiped. The right and left button in the tab bar below doesnt seem to work at all, they never change the image displayed. The UIActivityIndicatorView is never put up, nor the right and left buttons are validated when last or first images are reached. I am initializing the subclass of TTPhotoViewController as a rootViewController of a UINavigationController object which I am adding it onto a view.   Hi all, I have a requirement where UIPickerView should be customized. The picker view should look something like this: The application which has customized the pickerView similarly is: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/convert-the-unit-calculator/id325758140?mt=8 I have tried removing the default pickerView selection bar by resetting the property showsSelectionIndicator of UIImagePicker and adding a overlay view. But the problem is, the overlay view should be transparent so that the wheel behind it is visible. But the other application somehow does it even though the selection bar is not transparent.   I am working on a Windows Forms application in C#/.Net. I want to use a resource file that contains translations of my strings. My my project in visual studio I have the following hierarchy: Project CS files ... Resources\ resource.en-US.resx I am trying to read in the resource file as follows: m_ResourceReader = new ResXResourceReader("resources/resource.en-US.resx"); When I run this project, Visual Studio seems to look for the resources folder in the bin/Debug output folder of my project. My questions are: What is the right way to reference a resource file? I would like my installer to place this resource file under my application's folder under Program Files\MyApp\resources\resource.en-US.resx. What would be the way to make ResXResourceReader read it from that location. Thanks for your help. -Raj

• Adding audio channel using ffmpeg

  Hi all, I am working on ffmpeg and trying to add a audio stream on the fly. I am using AudioQueues and I get raw audio buffer. I am encoding audio with linear PCM and hence the audio I get will be of raw format, which I know ffmpeg does accept it. But I cannot figure out how. I have looked into AVStream, where in we have to create a new stream for this audio channel but how do I encode it to a video which is already initialized in another AVStream structure. Overall, I would like to have an idea of the architecture of ffmpeg. I found it difficult to work since it is least documented. Any pointers or details are appreciated. • iPad UI clipped in simulator

  My views created for iPad form factor look fine in Interface Builder. However, when I debug my app in iPhone Simulator 3.2 (with Hardware - Device set to iPad), I see the UI clipped and about half size. There is a 2x button at the bottom which lets me zoom in. But this just shows the same clipped UI in double size. This is really weird since I have created the XIB for iPad form factor and it is supposed to fit iPad completely. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I am using iPhone SDK 3.2 downloaded on 4/30/2010. Thanks. -Raj

  Hello, I have a stored proc in SQL Server 2005, which looks like the following (simplified) CREATE PROCEDURE FOO @PARAMS AS BEGIN -- STEP 1: POPULATE tmp_table DECLARE @tmp_table TABLE (...) INSERT INTO @tmp_table SELECT * FROM BAR -- STEP 2: USE @tmp_table FOR FINAL SELECT SELECT abc, pqr FROM BAZ JOIN @tmp_table ON some_criteria END When I run this proc from SQL Server Management Studio, things work fine. However, when I call the same proc from a Java program, using something like: cs = connection.prepareCall("exec proc ?,"); cs.setParam(...); rs = cs.getResultSet(); // BOOM - Null! while(rs.next()) {...} // NPE! I fail to understand why the first result set returned is NULL. Can someone explain this to me? As a workaround, if I check cs.getMoreResults() and if true, try another getResultSet() - THIS time it returns the proper result set. Any pointers please? Else, I should have a Edit & update/cancel buttons for each row to handle the same feature. But I don know how to place edit & update buttons inside the grid and capture their events. By default dojo updates only local the store value(client side). how can I save the updated cell values into the server? do we need to write any override methods to do so?? I am new to dojo. • Outline view from UITableView

  Hi guys, I need to implement a 1 level outline view out of UITableView. The cells which have children in them will have a '+' symbol and if user taps on it, the cells below it should slide down and the children cells of current selected row should appear. The sliding of cells should be visible and if the user taps '-' button of the already expanded row, the children cells should slide back into the parent. I have tried googling but did not find any pointers. How should I start, should I subclass UITableView? Or should I implement my own view sub-class and handle all the stuff there? I somehow feel it would be easier to sub-class UITableView because it will handle all the row selection for us, but I cannot figure out how to do it. Thanks and Regards, Raj

• Extracting data from multiple servers SQL 2005 SSIS

  I have created an SSIS package to connect to multiple SQL servers, create a database, a table and a stored procedure. The package also creates a job and schedules it to run every 5 minutes. The requirement is to collect performance metrics. I am using an ado object variable to get the server names and all the above tasks are in a for each loop and everything works fine. Now the problem: I need to create a data flow task, which will connect to each of these servers in turn, copy the performance metrics data over to a central server and purge the source table. I am unable to get this task to work. This task fails with "Unable to obtain Connection" error. Any help will be greatly appreciated. SQL Server Version : 2005 Thanks, Raj

• How to package .Net framework in Visual Studio project?

  I have created a C#/.Net application using visual studio. I have also created an installer project that puts out two files: An MSI file Setup.exe file In my installer project properties I have setup .Net 3.5 as a prerequisite. What I would like my installer to do as as follows: Put out a single file (MSI/exe/whatever) that also includes .Net framework prerequisite The installer should check whether .Net framework is installed on the target machine. If not, it should install it from its own bundled copy. Right now my installer sends people to the web for getting .Net. This is not the user experience I want. Thanks for your help. -Raj
