  • How to understand the memory usage and load average in linux server

    Hi, I am using a linux server which has 128GB of memory and 24 cores. I use top to see how much it is used. Its output is pasted at the end of the post. Here are two questions: (1) I see that each of the running processes occupies a very small percentage of memory (%MEM no more than 0.2%, and most just 0.0%), but how the total memory is almost used as in the fourth line of output ("Mem: 130766620k total, 130161072k used, 605548k free, 919300k buffers")? The sum of used percentage of memory over all processes seems unlikely to achieve almost 100%, doesn't it? (2) how to understand the load average on the first line ("load average: 14.04, 14.02, 14.00")? Thanks and regards! Edit: Thanks! I also really like to hear some rough numbers based on used percentage of memory to determine if a server is heavily loaded, since I once became the one who cramed the server without understanding the current load. Is swap regarded as almost the same as memory? For example, when memory and swap are almost of same size, if the memory is almost running out but the swap is still largely free, may I just view it as if the used percentage of memory + swap is still not high and run other new processes? How would you consider together CPU or memory (or memory + swap) usage? Do you become worried if either of them reaches too high or both?   • Android: Adding extended GLSurfaceView to a Layout don't show 3d stuff

    I make a game extending the class GLSurfaceView, if I apply SetContentView directly to that class, the 3d stuff and input works great. Now I want to show some items over 3d stuff, so I create a XML with a layout and some objects, and I try to add my class manually to the layout.     Im new to ActionScript and Flex 3... im trying to develop an MVC 100% OOP application with Flex 3 using MXML,AS3 and PHP. M (PHP) V (MXML) C (AS3) The 3 layers i choose for my development. I have 10 AS3 classes that are object related between them and some inherit or implement interfaces. The only problem here is how to interact 100% OOP with my model. In this case my model has to be a PHP Class that needs to be called from AS3 (the controller). For example the AS3 class : Patient have a method called Save: public function Save(data:Array) : void { /* PHP call - model layer */ } I want to create an instance of my PHP Patient Model class that connects to the DB and insert the data array into it. What should i use ? how can i also return a variable to AS3 ? What happen to as3 if there is a cached Exception in PHP ? Thanks in advanced :)

    I'm trying to develop a portable J2ME appli, but Netbeans do a class preverification of LWUIT library that uses optional APIs that some configurations don't have, so I get this error when I try to compile on a configuration without JRS-184 (M3G Optional API): Error preverifying class com.sun.lwuit.animations.Transition3D VERIFIER ERROR com/sun/lwuit/animations/Transition3D.initTransition()V: Cannot find class javax/microedition/m3g/Node I don't want to remove the classes from the LWUIT API because that classes works on other configurations compatibles with JRS-184 What I want is that NetBeans do not preverify the library, It is posible?   • What is the most simple implementation of IDynamicMetaObjectProvider?

    Hi, I have this scenario... 1.- I'm providing a "Dynamic Table" for wich users can define Fields. Each Dynamic Table will have as many rows/records as needed, but the Field definitions are centralized. 2.- My Dynamic Row/Record class was inherited from the .NET DLR DynamicObject class, and the underlying storage was a List appropriately associated to the defining fields. Everything works fine! BUT... 3.- Because I need to Serialize the content, and DynamicObject is not Serializable, I was forced to generate and carry a Dynamic Object when dynamic member access is required. But this is ugly and redundant. So, I need to implement IDynamicMetaObjectProvider myself to achieve dynamic access and serialization together. After googling/binging unsuccessfully I ask for your help... Can anybody please give a good example (or related link) for doing that?

    Right now I'm trying to Run/Debung my app on VisualStudio, but it cannot create it because the las instance of the app.vshost.exe is still running. Then, by using the Task Manager i'm trying to kill it, but it just remains there with no signal of activity. Beyond that particular case (maybe a VS bug), i'm very curious about the technical reasons why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process??? Can, an enlighted OS related developer, please try to explain? (And please don't start a Unix/Linux/Mac battle against Windows)

  • Multiple delivery confirmations per message with Ruby SMPP

    I am using the ruby smpp library to send/receive SMS. Right now we are sending messages to two different servers, using the ruby-smpp library. One of them works perfectly, but the other one sends multiple DELIVRD confirmations for each messages. And by multiple I mean hundreds of confirmations per message in some cases. Does anyone know any possible reason behind this? I am thinking on something relative to the implementation of the protocol the company is using, since it works perfectly with the other one, and not on the lines of a bug in the specific smpp ruby library. We are using smpp v3.4.

    I'm trying to validate that a user only enters a long value as input (long bigger than 0 actually). Compare and Range validator has DataTypeCheck for int values only. I was planning on using this class in a CustomValidator but then I would need to write both, client and server side validation code. Do you know of any other good way of doing this? Thanks!

    i have a program where i have a list of names and classes. i have the list in alphabetical order. now im trying to check if names repeat, add the classes to one single name. im trying to write some code like go through names if name is already in list, add the class to the one name. so an example would be, instead of having 'Anita ','phys 1443', and 'Anita','IE 3312' i would just have 'Anita','PHYS 1443','IE 3312'.   • How to Serialize a WPF Drawing?

    Hi, maybe I'm missing something. I believed that WPF vector-based Drawings (like DrawingGroup, DrawingGeometry, etc.) were ready to be serialized. But they are not. So, should I navigate all these drawing childrens, and store they points, lines, brushes (that also are not serializable) and so on, and then made my custom serialization? Is really that difficult or I'm missing something pretty obvious? I mean, even serializing Bitmap images is easy. I thinked serializing vector-based drawings were easier (no quality loss, just descriptive info, no massive data). Thanks for your practical answers, alternate-way suggestions and comments!

  • IPhone Dev: Activate the view of a tabBar button

    Hi, I have an application that has a tabBar that handles all the views. In the first view I have a login process. When that process finishes I want to go automatically to the second tabBar view without making the user to click in its respective tabBar button. All I've got until now is to highlight the button with this: myTabBar.selectedItem = [myTabBar.items objectAtIndex:1]; But I have no idea about how to bring the second view related to that button to the front, automatically. Until now the user has to press the button when it gets lighted (selected). Any idea about how to do this? Is it possible? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Query interface is poor, Hibernate doesn't respect JPA spec all the time and lot of times I need to use hibernate classes, annotations and config. What do you guys think about JPA? Ok, you're right Mr. FxCop, I'll add a private constructor: Private Utilities() Now I'm having: "It appears that field 'Utilities.Utilities' is never used or is only ever assigned to. Use this field or remove it." Any ideas of what should I do to get rid of both warnings?
