  • iPhone app linker error on Snow Leopard (Only on simulator)

    Im getting this linker error that won't let me compile. It only happens on the simulator. NOTE: - OSX 10.6.2 but had to use 10.5 as build target to avoid other linker errors - libxml2.dylib IS required and is in my Frameworks group - The other cited libraries I have never heard of. - Tried bringing in those other Libs under frameworks, didn't solve.     Hi, I am very familiar with Java 6 SE language features and am now looking for modern books that cover design patterns in Java for beginners as well as software engineering books that discuss architectures, algorithms and best practices in Java coding (sort of like the Effective C# books).   • Running ASP.Net MVC3 Alongside ASP.Net WebForms in the Same Project

    I previously blogged on running ASP.Net MVC in an ASP.Net WebForms project. My reference at the time was a freely-available PDF document by Scott Guthrie which covered the setup process in good detail.   As I am preparing references to share with our audience at my upcoming talk at the Deerfield Beach Coders Café on March 1st (http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=514), I found a nice blog post by Scott Hanselman on running both ASP.Net 4.0 WebForms along with ASP.Net MVC 3.0 in the same project. You can access this article here.   Moreover, Scott later followed-up with a blog showing how to leverage NuGet to automate the setup of ASP.Net MVC3 in an existing ASP.Net WebForms project.   One frequent question that usually comes up when discussing this side-by-side setup is the loss of the convenient Visual Studio Solution Explorer context menu which enable us to easily create controllers and views with a few mouse clicks.   A good suggestion brought up in the comments section of Scott’s article presented a good work-around to this problem: Manually add the MVC Visual Studio Project Type GUID in your .sln solution file ({E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401}) which then brings back the MVC-specific context menu functionality in solution explorer of the hybrid project.     I am thinking of running a self-site builder. But was wondering how would I allow customers to use their own domains that they already own. Is that even possible? Let's say my site is www.bestsitebuildingwebsite.com and each customer has urls like this www.bestsitebuildingwebsite.com/frances www.bestsitebuildingwebsite.com/eden www.bestsitebuildingwebsite.com/john And a customer has a domain called widgets.com Is it actually possible domain widgets.com to go to my site somehow and have HASHES on the URL still work (my site makes use of hashes for AJAX queries).   • Would a multitouch capable PC allow me to do Android development simulating the touch UI without an Android device ?

    Hi, I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab as a reference implementation (phone and first gen Android tablet), of Android 2.x for app development. I have noticed a slew of Android 3.0 slates being talked about at CES 2011 (Motorola XOOM, etc.). If I had a multitouch PC with the Android SDK/Emulator on it, would this allow me to more closely approximate device simulation by allowing user input via the multitouch screen ? Would it work via touch just like Windows 7 recognizes touch as mouse style input ? Has anyone done this ? Thanks, Scott

  • Data Source Security Part 5

    If you read through the first four parts of this series on data source security, you should be an expert on this focus area.  There is one more small topic to cover related to WebLogic Resource permissions.  After that comes the test, I mean example, to see with a real set of configuration parameters what the results are with some concrete values. WebLogic Resource Permissions All of the discussion so far has been about database credentials that are (eventually) used on the database side.  WLS has resource credentials to control what WLS users are allowed to access JDBC resources.  These can be defined on the Policies tab on the Security tab associated with the data source.  There are four permissions: “reserve” (get a new connection), “admin”, “shrink”, and reset (plus the all-inclusive “ALL”); we will focus on “reserve” here because we are talking about getting connections.  By default, JDBC resource permissions are completely open – anyone can do anything.  As soon as you add one policy for a permission, then all other users are restricted.  For example, if I add a policy so that “weblogic” can reserve a connection, then all other users will fail to reserve connections unless they are also explicitly added.  The validation is done for WLS user credentials only, not database user credentials.  Configuration of resources in general is described at “Create policies for resource instances” http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24329_01/apirefs.1211/e24401/taskhelp/security/CreatePoliciesForResourceInstances.html.  This feature can be very useful to restrict what code and users can get to your database. There are the three use cases: API Use database credentials User for permission checking getConnection() True or false Current WLS user getConnection(user,password) False User/password from API getConnection(user,password) True Current WLS user If a simple getConnection() is used or database credentials are enabled, the current user that is authenticated to the WLS system is checked. If database credentials are not enabled, then the user and password on the API are used. Example The following is an actual example of the interactions between identity-based-connection-pooling-enabled, oracle-proxy-session, and use-database-credentials. On the database side, the following objects are configured.- Database users scott; jdbcqa; jdbcqa3- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa3 grant connect through jdbcqa;- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa grant connect through jdbcqa; The following WebLogic Data Source objects are configured.- Users weblogic, wluser- Credential mapping “weblogic” to “scott”- Credential mapping "wluser" to "jdbcqa3"- Data source descriptor configured with user “jdbcqa”- All tests are run with Set Client ID set to true (more about that below).- All tests are run with oracle-proxy-session set to false (more about that below). If this was not an Oracle thin driver, the one case with the non-null Proxy in the above table would throw an exception because proxy session is only supported, implicitly or explicitly, with the Oracle thin driver. When oracle-proxy-session is set to true, the only cases that will pass (with a proxy of "jdbcqa") are the following.1. Setting use-database-credentials to true and doing getConnection(jdbcqa3,…) or getConnection().2. Setting use-database-credentials to false and doing getConnection(wluser, …) or getConnection(). Summary There are many options to choose from for data source security.  Considerations include the number and volatility of WLS and Database users, the granularity of data access, the depth of the security identity (property on the connection or a real user), performance, coordination of various components in the software stack, and driver capabilities.  Now that you have the big picture (remember that table in part 1), you can make a more informed choice.

  • ClearOS - how to create a site to site VPN between two ClearOS boxes?

    I plan on setting up some ClearOS boxes at several sites, and would like to set up site-to-site VPN between the remote sites and a main site (all running ClearOS enterprise 5.2sp1 / latest version). I have found references for how to set up ClearOS to VPN in to devices such as cisco for IPSEC, and others with PPTP. But for these methods it did not mention how you might configure 2 ClearOS boxes to talk to each other ipsec or pptp. I also saw documentation on installing OpenVPN and using the OpenVPN client software to VPN in to the ClearOS box. I will probably use this for individual users to VPN in, but I have some small sites ( 1 to 10 users) that will have their own ClearOS box and need to create a site to site VPN link back to the main site's OpenVPN box. Is this possible, can you point me to docs, or other info or basically, how? A couple updates: I did find a thread that asks the same basic question, where the user has a vpn set up between the two clearos machines (after installing ipsec vpn modules), just not transporting traffic between the LANS - and the very last post claims you have to edit some files (/etc/ipsec.conf) and set leftnexthop rightnexthop values to %direct. After that, it's supposed to work. Could it be that simple? I also posted to clear foundation, and they pointed me to some documentation for setting up ipsec unmanaged vpn. This looks pretty good, but, I will most likely need to figure out how to handle a dynamic dns type setup at least on one end. Also, what does it mean by multi-wan? Finally, what happens when a vpn connection goes down exactly - someone has to reboot the box or ?

  • ClearOS - how to avoid getting stuck at a fsck message at boot?

    I have had this happen a couple times - I have a ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 box, and due to a power outage or similar, it ends up showing an error at boot and saying that fsck needs to be run (I think it said with (or without?) the -a parameter). The problem is, I need this box to be headless, at a remote location (miles away)! SO, I need to come up with a solution on how to either have it automatically repair itself, without someone to be present with a monitor and keyboard. Another possibility is to simply avoid the issue all together - maybe there is something that can be changed so it's very unlikely to happen (I am unable to avoid the power outage of course - at least not practically). Finally, maybe it can be boot off a read only media (cd) or file system or similar? At least the base OS, so that it would always at least boot with enough configuration that might allow remote access, or basic connectivity?

  • If a managed network switch were to overheat, would you consider it no longer reliable?

    Here is the scenario - I have a network switch, one of several in a stack. It's fan failed. Soon, there were reports of users with network issues. After quickly replacing the fan, the users were fine, network issues were resolved. I assume the unit was overheating, and thus failing somehow. Today someone suggested to me, that I should not assume the unit is 100% reliable anymore. So what do you think, would an overheat condition (less than 1 day with the fan stopped) potentially cause permanent damage that could at some point come to the surface as future network failures/issues? If it matters, we are talking managed switches such as 3Com/HP SuperStack , ProCurve or PWR-Plus.

  • Cisco Pix how to add an additional block of static ip addresses for nat?

    I have a pix 501 with 5 static ip addresses. My isp just gave me 5 more. I am trying to figure out how to add the new block and then how to nat/open at least one of them to an inside machine. So far, I named a new interface "intf2", ip range is 71.11.11.58 - 62 (gateway should 71.11.11.57) imgsvr is the machine I want to nat to one of the (71.11.11.59) new ip addresses. mail (.123) is an example of a machine that is mapped to the current existing 5 ip block (96.11.11.121 gate / 96.11.11.122-127) and working fine.   • OWA 2010 calendar is it possible to get the 2003 week view back or customize it?

    In OWA (Exchange Outlook) 2003 calendar, there was a week view, which was a simple list type view, showing the day, time, and details. In OWA 2010, this is gone and the week view shows a more graphical view with boxes spanning the time slots. It is very difficult to read when you have many appointments. Is there a way to get a list style view, or some way to customize the views in OWA 2010 so I can build one?

  • ClearOS transparent firewall and web proxy mode possible?

    In other firewall software packages I have seen the ability and am hoping it is possible with ClearOS to put it in to transparent or bridged mode where the device sits physically between the client workstations and the internet router, but is the client workstation has the internet router address as it's gateway, not the clearos machine. The client workstation would also not have to enter an http proxy address as that would be transparent. Is this possible and how do you configure ClearOS this way? Thanks!

  • vmware esxi 5, cant create snapshots and consolidate fails, how to delete old or consolidate redo logs?

    I have a VM that seems to be working ok, but when VMWare DR (or I) tries to create a snap shot, it fails, and when I view the summary page of the VM it has a warning at the top showing that the disks need to be consolidated. So I go to snapshot manager for the VM and choose consolidate (in snapshot manager, there are no snapshots actually listed by the way). If fails with this error: This virtual machine has 255 or more redo logs in a single branch of its snapshot tree. The maximum supported limit has been reached, creating new snapshots will not be allowed. To create new snapshots, please delete old snapshots or consolidate the redo logs. If I browse the data store (which has plenty of free space, 2 TB and this vm is under 40gb), in the vm folder, I do in fact see a bunch of files, numbered all the way to 0255: myvm-000255-ctk.vmdk myvm-000255-delta.vmdk myvm-000255.vmdk How can I clean all this up? Is there an SSH command line command or can I delete some of the files safely? Thanks!

  • Strange monitor issue - screen goes black after a few seconds

    My LCD monitor display is going black (turning off). It's a Samsung SYncMaster 2233 widescreen. I am trying to figure out if there is anything I can do about it, or if the monitor is junk. I have tried multiple computers, all have the same issue. I have tried a different vga cable, same issue. Power and video cables are tight / double checked. When I power on the monitor, the blue light turns on at the bottom. Then a second or two later the video comes up as expected and it looks fine. However, about 2-3 seconds after that, the screen goes black. The blue light is still on and solid at the bottom (blue light normally flashes when the monitor is sleeping). If I power cycle the monitor, same thing happens. With no computer connected or when I unplug the vga cable, I see the searching for signal message "digital", then the screen goes black. However it usually shows "digital" then "analog" after that and switches between the two a few times. The buttons on the side do not do anything, although they may be, I just can not see if they are or not. I can usually get the "digital" message by pressing the buttons on the side, but then it quickly goes black again. What is really strange is sometimes I can get it to work fine. I am not sure what the difference is. Last week I connected it up and it worked fine and it stayed fine for at least a week! I did not turn it off or anything, I just let the OS put the display to sleep. Then this week one morning I started having the screen going black issue again. Seems like something is either loose inside or beginning to fail. Do you think there is any hope for it? update: pushing the input select button causes the "digital" and "analog" messages to flash on the screen, but only for a few seconds then it goes black. When it was working properly, those messages would flash back and fourth for probably 10-20 seconds then a message would show saying check input signal, but now just a black screen.

  • What does the red x icon mean next to a user in folder permissions (Windows 7)

    In trying to debug various strange issues on a machine, I found something strange - when I go to C:\Users\administrator and get properties, security tab, it lists the users (the local admin account, system, and 'administrator' which is the domain administrator account). It all looks fine in terms of permissions (full control, etc.) compared to other machines. The one difference is there is a small red circle with an X to the left of the user icon/name. Additionally, there are various folders where it says access denied under there - for example, my documents! Even logged in as the local machine administrator account (which is not named administrator), I am unable to change the permissions - it says access denied. Any ideas what this means and how to fix it? I even tried re-joining the machine to the domain.

[This Podcast hasn’t been updated in a while, but its always great to hear more from Jeff Atwood] Hanselminutes - Hanselminutes is a weekly audio talk show with noted web developer and technologist Scott Hanselman and hosted by Carl Franklin. Scott discusses utilities and tools, gives practical how-to advice, and discusses ASP.NET or Windows issues and workarounds. [This Podcast has recently started talking about random topics like diabetes, plane travel and geek relationship tips.  I am not sure if Scott is trying to move to a more mainstream audience or not] Herding Code - A weekly discussion featuring K. Scott Allen (odetocode.com), Kevin Dente, Scott Koon (lazycoder.com), and Jon Galloway. [Great all all-around podcast that I would recommend to all] Deep Fried Bytes - Deep Fried Bytes is an audio talk show with a Southern flavor hosted by technologists and developers Keith Elder and Chris Woodruff. The show discusses a wide range of topics including application development, operating systems and technology in general. Anything is fair game if it plugs into the wall or takes a battery. [This is one that just keeps getting better] Dot Net Rocks - .NET Rocks! is an Internet Audio Talk Show for Microsoft .NET Developers. [One of the first and usually very high quality content] Connected Show - Connected Show Podcast! A podcast covering new Microsoft technology for the developer community. The show is hosted by Dmitry Lyalin and Peter Laudati. [This and Polymorphic are one of my favorite podcast – Dmitry is a great host and would recommend this to all] Polymorphic Podcast - Object oriented development, architecture and best practices in .NET [Craig is a ASP.NET MVP and a great presenter. His podcast is great and it could only be better if he recorded it more often] ASP.NET Podcast - Wallace B. (Wally) McClure presents interviews and short technical talks on .NET Technologies. [Has great information on ASP.NET of course as well as iPhone Dev] Ruby on Rails Podcast - News and interviews about the Ruby language and the Rails website framework. [Even though I am not a Ruby programmer, I’ve found this podcast very interesting] Software Engineering Radio - Software Engineering Radio is a podcast targeted at the professional software developer. The goal is to be a lasting educational resource, not a newscast. Every ten days, a new episode is published that covers all topics software engineering. Episodes are either tutorials on a specific topic, or an interview with a well-known character from the software engineering world. All SE Radio episodes are original content ? we do not record conferences or talks given in other venues. Each episode comprises two speakers to ensure a lively listening experience. SE Radio is an independent and non-commercial organization.   • Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010

    Hi all, I have a server with Exchange 2007 installed and I want to move over to Exchange 2010, I want to install Exchange 2010 onto a new server, what is the best way of moving all mailboxes and config over to the new Exchange 2010 server? Both would be on the same LAN in the same domain. I've yet to install Exchange 2010 if that makes a difference. Thanks Scott
