  • How to make HOME or END keys work in mc running on OS X (ssh)

    I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

    I just want to setup a system wide environment variable, JAVA_HOME for all users, including root user. Requirements: accessible to normal users accessible to root always loaded, not only for bash (gnome-terminal does not start a bash by default) to work on Ubuntu, Debian and optionally Red Hat great if addition could be easily scripted So far here is the no-list: /etc/profile.d/java.sh - not executed if you start a new console from gnome-terminal /etc/profile - same as above ~/.profile - current user only, also any solution assuming ~ would not be acceptable because home directory could be on NIS, and JAVA_HOME could be different.

  • How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

    I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different.   • Ubuntu won't boot, only displays GRUB terminal

    I have a problem with my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 from Windows, it worked fine for days, but today it won't boot. When I start the machine, GRUB loads. There is the Windows 7 loader, I select Ubuntu from there and after that, I should see the Ubuntu GRUB menu, where I'd select the mode to boot Ubuntu. However, I can't see that anymore. I directly get to a GRUB terminal. Can anyone help me with this? How would I recover my data or reset the boot loader?

    I wasn't able to activate my gizmo5 number because Google Voice activation(verification) requires you to enter two dial tones (DTMF) and they did not work at least not with these two variants: Using gizmo5 PC client using fring from Iphone as gizmo5 SIP client Redirecting gizmo5 to a US mobile number None of the above methods worked for me.   • How do I share a home printer under Windows if the computer is part of a domain?

    I do have my work laptop at home and I want to share an USB printer in order to be able to print to it from my MacBook. Currently Windows 7 is refusing to share the printer because the computer is part of a domain and it tells me that I need to join a homegroup in order to be able to do that. Also it tells me that he cannot create this homegroup and this group has to be create by another Windows 7 computer from my network. As you can imagine I do have only one Windows computer on my home network. How can I solve this problem?

  • How to get the pid of a running process using a single command that parse the output of ps?

    I am looking for a single line that does return the pid of a running process. Currently I have: ps -A -o pid,cmd|grep xxx|head -n 1 And this returns the fist pid, command. I need only the first number from the output and ignore the rest. I suppose sed or awk would help here but my experience with them is limited. Also, this has another problem, it will return the pid of grep if the xxx is not running. It's really important to have a single line, as I want to reuse the output for doing something else, like killing that process.

    I want to be able to open Excel XML files in Excel but without assigning XML directly to Excel. There are lots of XML files that are not Excel files and I don't want to open all of them in Excel. The file has proper header for opening in Excel but currently it does open Internet Explorer that asks me if I want to open the file with Excel, save or cancel. I just want to open it without two another annoying windows.

    I do have a third party product (Jira) that has Active Directory integration via LDAP. I want to enable Jira administrators to edit group memberships and have them syncronized inside Active Directory. This currently works but I needed to use a Domain Administrator service account in order to do this. The question is how can I do this without giving the entire Domain Administrator permission to the service account.

  • How can I trick ssh to connect using different configurations based on current location?

    Here is the following use case: wanting to ssh server1 in 3 scenarios: server1 is on current network, go for it server1 is not on current network and you need to use a gateway (gw1) to access it, not a big problem as you can use ~/.ssh/config to define tunnelling for this you are on a network that does not allow you to access the first gw1, so you'll use gw2 for that. Desired outcome: be able to use the same command and be able to connect to the server.

  • How to tell rsync not to touch the destination directory permissions?

    I am using rsync to sync a directory from a machine to another but I encountered the following problem: the destination directory permissions are altered. rsync -ahv defaults/ root@hostname:~/ The problem is that in this case the permissions and ownership of the defaults forlder will be assigned to the destination folder. I do want to keep the permissions for the files and subdirectories but not for the source directory itself. Also, I do not want to remove any existing files from the destination (but to update them if needed), but I think that current settings are already ok regarding this. How can I do this?

  • XP Deploying issues due to msvcr90.dll trying to load FlsAlloc

    I have an application build with VS2008 SP1a (9.0.30729.4148) on Windows 7 x64 that does not want to start under XP. The message is The application failed to initialize properly (0x80000003). Click on OK to terminate the application.. I checked with depends.exe and found that msvcr90.dll does try to load FlsAlloc from KERNEL32.dll - and FlsAlloc is available only starting with Vista. I'm sure it is not used by the application. How to solve the issue?   • How do I prevent flickering on CListCtrl?

    I'm using a CListCtrl/CListView report view (LVS_REPORT) in virtual mode (LVS_OWNERDATA) with LVS_EX_DOUBLEBUFFER enabled and I encounter ugly flickering. Double buffer have a real effect but it doesn't stop all flickering (without it very slow). I'm not looking for switching to other controls that would require a high amount of rework (like ObjectListView) How does the flickering behaves: * on column resize - the background is first clean using lightgray and after this is displayed the text (background is white) * on mouse scroll (animated) - for a very short time there is lightgray-bar displayed in the area where new lines are to be displayed. It looks like it does clean the background using the default window background color (lightgray) for the area where it has to redraw. How do I solve the flickering problem?

  • How to do proper Unicode and ANSI output redirection on cmd.exe?

    If you are doing automation on windows and you are redirecting the output of different commands (internal cmd.exe or external, you'll discover that your log files contains combined Unicode and ANSI output (meaning that they are invalid and will not load well in viewers/editors). Is it is possible to make cmd.exe work with UTF-8? This question is not about display, s about stdin/stdout/stderr redirection and Unicode. I am looking for a solution that would allow you to: redirect the output of the internal commands to a file using UTF-8 redirect output of external commands supporting Unicode to the files but encoded as UTF-8. If it is impossible to obtain this kind of consistence using batch files, is there another way of solving this problem, like using python scripting for this? In this case, I would like to know if it is possible to do the Unicode detection alone (user using the scripting should not remember if the called tools will output Unicode or not, it will just expect to convert the output to UTF-8. For simplicity we'll assume that if the tool output is not-Unicode it will be considered as UTF-8 (no codepage conversion).

    Hello, I am building an iPhone app interface and I know the dpi has to be 163, but when it comes to the size of the file, I was looking through all the recommendations and found 2 different answers... Does anyone know what size should i set the Photoshop file at? The answers I have so far are: "The screen on the iPhone is 480×320, minus the 20-pixel status bar (making a 460×320 working screen size). The screen shots on the App Store should not include the status bar."   • Is possible to make mt.exe embed manifest files correctly in Visual Studio 2008?

    I found that mt.exe fails to correctly create and embed manifest files into executables when run inside a VCPROJ. For example the same executable load well on Windows 7 but failed to load on Windows XP. The manifest was embedded and correct. After I spend lots of hours searching for possible reasons and solution I modified the project settings to generate the manifest outside the exe file. Now it works on both systems.     I have a project compiled using __cdecl calling convention (msvc2010) and I compiled boost using the same compiler using the default settings. The project linked with boost but I at runtime I got an assert message like this: File: ...\boost\boost\program_options\detail\parsers.hpp Line: 79 Run-Time Check Failure #0 - The value of ESP was not properly saved across a function call. This is usually a result of calling a function declared with one calling convention with a function pointer declared with a different calling convention. There are the following questions: what calling convention does boost build with by default on Windows (msvc2010) how to I compile boost with __cdecl calling convention why boost wasn't able to prevent linking with code with different calling conventions? I understood that boost has really smart library auto-inclusion code.
