  • SSH error: Permission denied, please try again

    - by Kamal
I am new to ubuntu. Hence please forgive me if the question is too simple. I have a ubuntu server setup using amazon ec2 instance. I need to connect my desktop (which is also a ubuntu machine) to the ubuntu server using SSH. I have installed open-ssh in ubuntu server. I need all systems of my network to connect the ubuntu server using SSH (no need to connect through pem or pub keys). Hence opened SSH port 22 for my static IP in security groups (AWS). My SSHD-CONFIG file is: # Package generated configuration file # See the sshd_config(5) manpage for details # What ports, IPs and protocols we listen for Port 22 # Use these options to restrict which interfaces/protocols sshd will bind to #ListenAddress :: #ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 Protocol 2 # HostKeys for protocol version 2 HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ecdsa_key #Privilege Separation is turned on for security UsePrivilegeSeparation yes # Lifetime and size of ephemeral version 1 server key KeyRegenerationInterval 3600 ServerKeyBits 768 # Logging SyslogFacility AUTH LogLevel INFO # Authentication: LoginGraceTime 120 PermitRootLogin yes StrictModes yes RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes #AuthorizedKeysFile %h/.ssh/authorized_keys # Don't read the user's ~/.rhosts and ~/.shosts files IgnoreRhosts yes # For this to work you will also need host keys in /etc/ssh_known_hosts RhostsRSAAuthentication no # similar for protocol version 2 HostbasedAuthentication no # Uncomment if you don't trust ~/.ssh/known_hosts for RhostsRSAAuthentication #IgnoreUserKnownHosts yes # To enable empty passwords, change to yes (NOT RECOMMENDED) PermitEmptyPasswords no # Change to yes to enable challenge-response passwords (beware issues with # some PAM modules and threads) ChallengeResponseAuthentication no # Change to no to disable tunnelled clear text passwords #PasswordAuthentication yes # Kerberos options #KerberosAuthentication no #KerberosGetAFSToken no #KerberosOrLocalPasswd yes #KerberosTicketCleanup yes # GSSAPI options #GSSAPIAuthentication no #GSSAPICleanupCredentials yes X11Forwarding yes X11DisplayOffset 10 PrintMotd no PrintLastLog yes TCPKeepAlive yes #UseLogin no #MaxStartups 10:30:60 #Banner /etc/issue.net # Allow client to pass locale environment variables AcceptEnv LANG LC_* Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server # Set this to 'yes' to enable PAM authentication, account processing, # and session processing. Depending on your PAM configuration, # PAM authentication via ChallengeResponseAuthentication may bypass # the setting of "PermitRootLogin without-password". # If you just want the PAM account and session checks to run without # PAM authentication, then enable this but set PasswordAuthentication # and ChallengeResponseAuthentication to 'no'. UsePAM yes Through webmin (Command shell), I have created a new user named 'senthil' and added this new user to 'sudo' group. sudo adduser -y senthil sudo adduser senthil sudo I tried to login using this new user 'senthil' in 'webmin'. I was able to login successfully. When I tried to connect ubuntu server from my terminal through SSH, ssh senthil@SERVER_IP It asked me to enter password. After the password entry, it displayed: Permission denied, please try again. On some research I realized that, I need to monitor my server's auth log for this. I got the following error in my auth log (/var/log/auth.log) Jul 2 09:38:07 ip-192-xx-xx-xxx sshd[3037]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=MY_CLIENT_IP user=senthil Jul 2 09:38:09 ip-192-xx-xx-xxx sshd[3037]: Failed password for senthil from MY_CLIENT_IP port 39116 ssh2 When I tried to debug using: ssh -v senthil@SERVER_IP OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1, OpenSSL 1.0.1 14 Mar 2012 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 19: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to SERVER_IP [SERVER_IP] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug1: Checking blacklist file /usr/share/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048 debug1: Checking blacklist file /etc/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048 debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_ecdsa type -1 debug1: identity file {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/id_ecdsa-cert type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-7ubuntu1 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-7ubuntu1 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: sending SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_INIT debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY debug1: Server host key: ECDSA {SERVER_HOST_KEY} debug1: Host 'SERVER_IP' is known and matches the ECDSA host key. debug1: Found key in {MY-WORKSPACE}/.ssh/known_hosts:1 debug1: ssh_ecdsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: Roaming not allowed by server debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: password debug1: Next authentication method: password senthil@SERVER_IP's password: debug1: Authentications that can continue: password Permission denied, please try again. senthil@SERVER_IP's password: For password, I have entered the same value which I normally use for 'ubuntu' user. • ssh use with netcat to forward connections via bastion host to inside machine

    - by Registered User
Hi, I am having a server in a corporate data centre who's sys admin is me. There are some virtual machines running on it.The main server is accessible from internet via SSH. There are some people who within the lan access the virtual machines whose IPs on LAN are 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.3 192.168.1.4 the main machine which is a bastion host for internet has IP 192.168.1.50 and only I have access to it. I have to give people on internet the access to the internal machines whose IP I mentioned above.I know tunnel is a good way but the people are fairly non technical and do not want to get into a tunnel etc jargons. So I came across a solution as explained on this link On the gateway machine which is 192.168.1.50 in the .ssh/config file I add following Host securehost.example.com ProxyCommand ssh [email protected] nc %h %p Now my question is do I need to create separate accounts on the bastion host (gateway) to those users who can SSH to the inside machines and in each of the users .ssh/config I need to make the above entry or where exactly I put the .ssh/config on the gateway. Also ssh [email protected] where user1 exists only on inside machine 192.168.1.1 and not on the gateway is that right syntax? Because the internal machines are accessilbe to outside world as site1.example.com site2.example.com site3.example.com site4.example.com But SSH is only for example.com and only one user.So How should I go for .ssh/config 1) What is the correct syntax for ProxyCommand on gateway's .ssh/config should I use ProxyCommand ssh [email protected] nc %h %p or I should use ProxyCommand ssh [email protected] in nc %h %p 2) Should I create new user accounts on gateway or adding them in AllowedUsers on ssh_config is sufficient?

  • SSH onto Ubuntu box using RSA keys

    - by jex
I recently installed OpenSSH on one of my Ubuntu machines and I've been running into problems getting it to use RSA keys. I've generated the RSA key on the client (ssh-keygen), and appended the public key generated to both the /home/jex/.ssh/authorized_keys and /etc/ssh/authorized_keys files on the server. However, when I try to login (ssh -o PreferredAuthorizations=publickey jex@host -v [which forces the use of public key for login]) I get the following output: debug1: Host 'pentheon.local' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/jex/.ssh/known_hosts:2 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received Banner message debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /home/jex/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive debug1: Trying private key: /home/jex/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /home/jex/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • OS X Keeps prompting me for SSH private key passphrase (OS X 10.6.8)

    - by Danny Englander
I have a private key to ssh into my server and the connection works. In my hosts file I have: Host myhost HostName xxx.xxx.xxx.xx GlobalKnownHostsFile ~/.ssh/known_hosts port 22 User myuser IdentityFile ~/.ssh/mykey_dsa IdentitiesOnly yes .. and then I type ssh myhost Every time I connect, I get the Mac OS X keychain prompt and I tell OS X to remember the passphrase but then when I disconnect from ssh and re-connect, I am prompted to add the passphrase to the keychain again. This is only a recent problem so I suspect and issue with Keychain? To be clear, I can 're-add' to keychain every time and connect but this defats the purpose. The permissions on my dsa key are set at 600 or -rw-------@ I tried repairing disk permissions but that did no good. My Google-foo is also failing me, nothing of use came up. So I am not sure if this an OS X / keychain issue or an SSH issue. update: When I try ssh -vvv myhost, I think it reveals the issue: debug1: Trying private key: /Users/danny/.ssh/mykey_dsa debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown> debug3: Not a RSA1 key file /Users/danny/.ssh/mykey_dsa. debug1: read PEM private key done: type DSA Identity added: /Users/danny/.ssh/mykey_dsa (/Users/danny/.ssh/mykey_dsa) debug1: read PEM private key done: type DSA debug3: sign_and_send_pubkey debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). ... and after that I get connected. I think this crux of the matter is: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed

  • How to make ssh connection between servers using public-key authentication

    - by Rafael
I am setting up a continuos integration(CI) server and a test web server. I would like that CI server would access web server with public key authentication. In the web server I have created an user and generated the keys sudo useradd -d /var/www/user -m user sudo passwd user sudo su user ssh-keygen -t rsa Generating public/private rsa key pair. Enter file in which to save the key (/var/www/user/.ssh/id_rsa): Created directory '/var/www/user/.ssh'. Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): Enter same passphrase again: Your identification has been saved in /var/www/user/.ssh/id_rsa. Your public key has been saved in /var/www/user/.ssh/id_rsa.pub. However othe side, CI server copies the key to the host but still asks password ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@webserver-address user@webserver-address's password: Now try logging into the machine, with "ssh 'user@webserver-address'", and check in: .ssh/authorized_keys to make sure we haven't added extra keys that you weren't expecting. I checked on the web server and the CI server public key has been copied to web server authorized_keys but when I connect, It asks password. ssh 'user@webserver-address' user@webserver-address's password: If I try use root user rather than my created user (both users are with copied public keys). It connects with the public key ssh 'root@webserver-address' Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04 (GNU/Linux 2.6.18-274.7.1.el5.028stab095.1 x86_64) * Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/ Last login: Wed Apr 11 10:21:13 2012 from ******* root@webserver-address:~#

  • How do I connect to SSH without the password to be requested every time ? - Already follow some answers here but it doesn't work

    - by MEM
MAC OS X Lion 10.7.3 1) On host, I've created an authorized_keys file inside .ssh folder, by doing: touch authorized_keys 2) I've copy my public ssh key into host .ssh folder by doing: scp ~/.ssh/mykey.pub [email protected]:/home/userhost/.ssh/mykey.pub 3) I've place it's contents inside authorized files by doing: cat mykey.pub >> authorized_keys 4) Then I've removed the mykey.pub file: rm mykey.pub 5) On my terminal, locally, inside my ~/.ssh folder I made: ssh-add mykey (notice that it is without the pub extension); 6) I've closed and opened again the terminal. When I first connect to this host, it has being added to the *known_hosts* file inside ~/.ssh; I've pico known_hosts and the hash is there. Still, every time I connect by doing: ssh [email protected] it requests a password ! What am I missing here ? UPDATE: I've done EVEN TWO MORE THINGS here: 7) Set your key to be the default identity - if it doesn't exist, create; touch ~/.ssh/config and place inside the following line: IdentityFile ~/.ssh/yourkeyname *id_rsa is normally your default key. You should switched to your key. This tells that the outgoing ssh connections should use this as a default identity.* 8) Add a bash process to your ssh-agent: ssh-agent bash ssh-add ~/.ssh/yourkeyname Lisinge answer helped but it's not definitive. If we restart our machine, the password gets prompted again!!! How can we debug this? What can we do here? How can we check where is this process failing ? UPDATE 2: If I use: ssh -v -i <keyfile> [email protected] I get among other things: OpenSSH_5.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 Warning: Identity file yourkeyname not accessible: No such file or directory. This message refers to what? The identify file is not accessible on the localhost, or it's not accessible on the remote host ? Please advice

  • Bizarre SSH Problem - It won't even start

    - by thallium85
I recently got Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, got it up and running with some MediaWiki software, static IP on the box and router and was able to access the main page even from a cell phone. Everything seemed great... Then I wanted to finally get rid of the monitor and keyboard and login remotely via SSH. I installed openssh-server, let everything point to port 22 for a test run and installed putty on my Windows XP machine. I got a connection refused. Went back and started checking the Ubuntu install itself... (I'm under root from this point on) $ sudo -s $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting $ service ssh start ssh start/running, process 2212 $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting Apparently ssh has stopped or is waiting for something.... $ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I can't even connect to myself... I checked ufw (firewall) to see if port 22 is doing alright... $ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From 22 ALLOW Anywhere 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere 22 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere (v6) sshd_config shows only Port 22 Is ssh not using the right IP address at all? I just don't get what I did wrong here. When this is up and running I will def change the port number, but for now, I don't want to mess with the default install too much until a test run with putty is successful. Edit: Here are my sshd_config file and my ssh_config file. The command /usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e returns: /etc/ssh/sshd_config line 159: Subsystem 'sftp' already defined. Edit: @phoibus moving the sshd_config file and reinstalling did the trick! service ssh status the above command shows that ssh is now running and I am now able to log in from my windows xp computer remotely via putty. Thanks so much! I can now use my monitor for other things!

  • Correct password for ssh key rejected when ssh-d into machine

    - by user20342
When I am logged into my machine directly, I can do all git operations, and when prompted for a password, the password is accepted. When I ssh into the same box and run git operations on the same repos, the password is rejected. Relevant section of .ssh/config looks like this: # Generic settings Host * ServerAliveInterval 600 ControlPath /tmp/ssh-%r@%h:%p ControlMaster auto KeepAlive yes IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub Transaction looks like this when I login when I ssh into my box: {12-12-03 9:41}hbrown-wks2:~/workspace/spt/project@master??? hbrown% git pull Enter passphrase for key '/home/hbrown/.ssh/id_rsa.pub': Enter passphrase for key '/home/hbrown/.ssh/id_rsa.pub': Enter passphrase for key '/home/hbrown/.ssh/id_rsa.pub': Permission denied (publickey). fatal: Could not read from remote repository. Please make sure you have the correct access rights and the repository exists. Using bash does not appear to make a difference (i.e. ssh-agent /bin/bash). This is a recent development, but I can't cite the change that caused it.

  • Reverse ssh tunneling with Tomato

    - by Deivuh
Since my ISP restricts some incoming connections, I can't access remotely to my home pc. What I'm trying to do is make a reverse ssh connection from my home's router with Tomato firmware to the office computer, so I can access remotely from the office with that open connection. What I'm doing is running the following from the router: ssh -R 12345:localhost:22 oUser@office Then I leave run top open to keep the connection alive. And from my office what I do is run the following: ssh hUser@localhost -p 12345 but I get the following message with verbose on: OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-6, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to localhost [::1] port 19999. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/oUser/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/oUer/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/oUser/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 debug1: Checking blacklist file /usr/share/ssh/blacklist.DSA-1024 debug1: Checking blacklist file /etc/ssh/blacklist.DSA-1024 debug1: identity file /home/oUser/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host I've password remote access enabled in Tomato's configuration, so I should be able to access without having the public key on *authorized_keys*, but I've even tried adding it and still the same. I've done the same with my home's computer, and it does work perfectly, but it doesn't with the router. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • How to limit reverse SSH tunelling ports?

    - by funktku
We have a public server which accepts SSH connections from multiple clients behind firewalls. Each of these clients create a Reverse SSH tunnel by using the ssh -R command from their web servers at port 80 to our public server. The destination port(at the client side) of the Reverse SSH Tunnel is 80 and the source port(at public server side) depends on the user. We are planning on maintaining a map of port addresses for each user. For example, client A would tunnel their web server at port 80 to our port 8000; client B from 80 to 8001; client C from 80 to 8002. Client A: ssh -R 8000:internal.webserver:80 clienta@publicserver Client B: ssh -R 8001:internal.webserver:80 clientb@publicserver Client C: ssh -R 8002:internal.webserver:80 clientc@publicserver Basically, what we are trying to do is bind each user with a port and not allow them to tunnel to any other ports. If we were using the forward tunneling feature of SSH with ssh -L, we could permit which port to be tunneled by using the permitopen=host:port configuration. However, there is no equivalent for reverse SSH tunnel. Is there a way of restricting reverse tunneling ports per user?

  • SSH automatic logon works for one user but not the other

    - by tinmaru
I want to enable automatic ssh login using the .ssh/config file for my git user. Here is my .ssh/config file: Host test HostName myserver.net User test IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa Host git HostName myserver.net User git IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa It works for my test user but not for my git user so my global SSH configuration is correct. The configuration are exactly the same as far as I know. It used to work with git user but I'm unable what change has broken the automatic logon. When I type: ssh -v git I get the following log: ... debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password debug1: Next authentication method: publickey Offering RSA public key: /Users/mylocalusername/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password debug1: Next authentication method: password [email protected]'s password: _ Does anyone know what could be a possible difference

  • can't ssh from mac to windows (running ssh server on cygwin)

    - by Denise
I set up an ssh server on a fresh windows 7 machine using the latest version of cygwin. Disabled the firewall. I can ssh into it from itself, from a different windows box (using winssh), and from a linux vm. In spite of that, I tried to ssh in from two different macs, and neither would let me! Recently we upgraded the server from 12.04 LTS server to 13.04. All was well, including after a reboot. This now happens every single time. It is imperative that I get it sorted. The strange thing is that it behaves initially then starts to hang after several hours. I perused logs previously and nothing stood out. From the auth.log, I can see that it has allowed me in, but still I get nothing back on the client side: Sep 20 12:47:50 cbear sshd[25376]: Accepted publickey for tfergeson from 10.1.10.14 port 54631 ssh2 Sep 20 12:47:50 cbear sshd[25376]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user tfergeson by (uid=0) UPDATES: Still occurring even after setting UseDNS no and commenting out #session optional pam_mail.so standard noenv This does not appear to be a network/dns related issue, as all services running on the machine are as responsive and accessible as ever, with the exception of sshd. Any thoughts on where to start?

  • (svh+ssh) getting bash to load my PATH over SSH

    - by Eli Bendersky
This problem comes up with me trying to make svnserve (Subversion server) available on a server through SSH. I compiled SVN and installed it in $HOME/bin. Local access to it (not through SSH) works fine. Connections to svn+ssh fail due to: bash: svnserve: command not found Debugging this, I've found that: ssh user@server "which svnserve" says: which: no svnserve in (/usr/bin:/bin) This is strange, because I've updated the path to $HOME/bin in my .bashrc, and also added it in ~/.ssh/environment. However, it seems like the SSH doesn't read it. Although when I run: ssh user@server "echo $PATH" It does print my updated path! What's going on here? How can I make SSH find my svnserve? Thanks in advance

  • SSH use only my password, Ignore my ssh key, don't prompt me for a passphrase

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
This is a question regarding the OpenSSH client on Linux, MacOSX and FreeBSD. Normally, I log into systems using my SSH key. Occasionally, I want my SSH client to ignore my SSH key and use a password instead. If I 'ssh hostname', my client prompts me for the Passphrase to my SSH key which is an annoyance. Instead, I want the client to simply ignore my SSH key, so that the server will ask me for my password instead. I tried the following, but I am still prompted for the passphrase to my SSH key. After this, I am prompted for my password. ssh -o PreferredAuthentications=password host.example.org I want to do this on the client side, without any modification of the remote host.

  • rsync not using forwarded ssh credentials

    - by Mat
I have a situation where I would like to rsync some files from a remote server to a server in my office. The source server requires key-based authentication and I have an appropriate key set up on my desktop machine. If I ssh into the local server and then ssh to the remote server, ssh agent forwarding works correctly. However, when I try to rsync over ssh I get permission denied. So, Desktop -- Local server -- Remote server. When ssh'd onto the local server ssh user@remote works, but rsync -avPe ssh user@remote:/src /dest does not - Permission denied (publickey).

  • reverse ssh tunnel listens on wrong interface

    - by Jens Fahnenbruck
I'm working with a server that is behind a firewall. I have established an ssh tunnel to an intermediate server in the internet like this: remoteuser@behind_fw$ ssh -N -f -R 10002:localhost:22 middleuser@middle But I can't connect directly throgh this server, this doesn't work: user@local$ ssh remoteuser@middle -p 10002 I have to connect in two steps: user@local$ ssh middleuser@middle middleuser@middle$ ssh remoteuser@localhost -p 10002 Output of netstat -l on middle: tcp 0 0 localhost:10002 *:* LISTEN but it should be something like this: tcp 0 0 *:10002 *:* LISTEN how can I achieve this?

I'm trying to access my work computer from home. We are supposed to SSH into a server, say ssh.company.com and from there ssh into an xhost to to work, say xhost04.company.com. xhost04 is not directly accessible. How can I browse files on xhost04 from my home computer using nautilus (in ubuntu). To access the SSH host I would use: sftp://ssh.company.com/

  • SSH multi-hop connections with netcat mode proxy

    - by aef
Since OpenSSH 5.4 there is a new feature called natcat mode, which allows you to bind STDIN and STDOUT of local SSH client to a TCP port accessible through the remote SSH server. This mode is enabled by simply calling ssh -W [HOST]:[PORT] Theoretically this should be ideal for use in the ProxyCommand setting in per-host SSH configurations, which was previously often used with the nc (netcat) command. ProxyCommand allows you to configure a machine as proxy between you local machine and the target SSH server, for example if the target SSH server is hidden behind a firewall. The problem now is, that instead of working, it throws a cryptic error message in my face: Bad packet length 1397966893. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt Here is an excerpt from my ~/.ssh/config: Host * Protocol 2 ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/cm_socket/%r@%h:%p ControlPersist 4h Host proxy-host proxy-host.my-domain.tld HostName proxy-host.my-domain.tld ForwardAgent yes Host target-server target-server.my-domain.tld HostName target-server.my-domain.tld ProxyCommand ssh -W %h:%p proxy-host ForwardAgent yes As you can see here, I'm using the ControlMaster feature so I don't have to open more than one SSH connection per-host. The client machine I tested this with is an Ubuntu 11.10 (x86_64) and both proxy-host and target-server are Debian Wheezy Beta 3 (x86_64) machines. The error happens when I call ssh target-server. When I call it with the -v flag, here is what I get additionally: OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-7ubuntu1, OpenSSL 1.0.0e 6 Sep 2011 debug1: Reading configuration data /home/aef/.ssh/config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: Applying options for target-server.my-domain.tld debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: auto-mux: Trying existing master debug1: Control socket "/home/aef/.ssh/cm_socket/[email protected]:22" does not exist debug1: Executing proxy command: exec ssh -W target-server.my-domain.tld:22 proxy-host.my-domain.tld debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_rsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_dsa-cert type -1 debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_ecdsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/aef/.ssh/id_ecdsa-cert type -1 debug1: permanently_drop_suid: 1000 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_6.0p1 Debian-3 debug1: match: OpenSSH_6.0p1 Debian-3 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-7ubuntu1 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent Bad packet length 1397966893. • ssh Prompts For Password After Account Unlocked - Despite ssh key?

    - by user1011471
Here's what happened: I set up ssh key so that user could ssh from A to B without a password. I got user's password wrong in some other context too many times, and user's account got locked out. (IT uses Active Directory here) IT unlocked the account. Concurrent to the unlocking, a script was running, calling something like ssh user@B some-health-check-command every 5 seconds or so -- which seemed to work fine before I caused user to get locked out in step 2. IT reports user reliably gets locked out a short time after each unlock attempt. I thought the ssh key would allow ssh user@B some-command as long as the account is not locked. But it behaves as if, when user gets unlocked, B suddenly asks for a password and since my command repeatedly runs without supplying a password, the account gets locked out after 5 attempts. Account cannot be accessed at this time. Please contact your system administrator. My questions are... Is that what's happening? Or: what's happening? More importantly: How can I reconfigure things such that my script doesn't cause problems? Can I accomplish what I want without having to install Expect? (I don't know if I have permission to do so) Other notes: Not using ssh-agent currently. The ssh command is running on our Jenkins master, a linux box. A and B are Mac OS X. user is managed in Active Directory and normally can sign into all three machines. Other than these things and the ssh key I set up, everything else has the default configuration as far as I know.
