• Issues with non-HP harddisk in HP ML 350 server?

  I'm looking to buy some extra disk space for a HP ML 350 G5 server. It is for simple file-serving - not OS/system stuff. HP harddisks are insanely expensive, so I'm tempted to buy some other brand instead. I have heard that they sometime use special firmware on their disks, but I suspect that might just be HP spreading rumors to sell disks. Does anyone have experience using non-HP disks? Any features not working, or not being able to build the RAID at all? I'm looking at 2.5" SAS Seagate drives - Constellation 500 GB (7.2k) or Savvio 600 GB (10k).

• Sort a set of multidimensional arrays by array elements

  Let's say I've started here: $arr[0] = array('a' => 'a', 'int' => 10); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'foo', 'int' => 5); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'bar', 'int' => 12); And I want to get here: $arr[0] = array('a' => 'foo', 'int' => 5); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'a', 'int' => 10); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'bar', 'int' => 12); How can I sort the elements in an array by those elements elements? Multidimensional arrays always feel like a little bit more than my brain can handle (-_-) (until I figure them out and they seem super easy)

• Is there no such thing as a Gigabit switch?

  According to the manufacturer specification, even my rather plain desktop computer has "Gigabit Ethernet". So when I want to copy large files over the LAN (not Internet) it would make sense to have a gigabit switch. I'm searching eBay for a gigabit switch for a planned home network upgrade. The products I find are all labeled "gigabit" but they all have 24 x 10/100Mbit autosensing ports and sometimes 2 x 10/100/1000Mbit autosensing ports. It was my understanding that 10/100 is ancient and that modern computers have network interfaces that work with 1000Mbit, so it would make sense to get a switch that has 24 x 1000Mbit ports. Did I misunderstand, or are sellers (deliberately?) mislabeling older hardware? (Let's not dive into wired vs. wireless networks and how "N" wireless is fast. You'd be right, but not answering the question.)

• How to use a home network patch panel?

  I'm planning a home network in a house that's not built yet. One recommendation is to add network sockets in various rooms and have them all end in a central place, where it all connects using a network switch. So far so good. Another recommendation says to not connect everything directly to the switch, but to a patch panel which in turn is connected to the switch. I'm unsure why this is good. Is there any practical advantage of using a patch panel if you're not planning to re-wire things very often? How does a patch panel actually work? Let's say it has 24 ports. Does it have another 24 ports on the backside that go to the switch, or what? Wikipedia isn't helpful on this. Clarification: I am planning to run network cables through conduits inside the walls and terminated with network sockets in the wall (as opposed to having just conduits and long regular network cables that have a normal plug in each end). Going by RedGrittyBrick's answer, a patch panel is nearly unavoidable in that case.

• Wordpress: Sort posts by meta value after AFTER querying from database

  Hello, I am pulling posts from my database by using Wordpress' WP_Query object like so: $shows_query = new WP_Query("category_name=shows&meta_key=band&meta_value=$artist_id"); I have another meta value I would like to sort the posts by, however. The meta key is 'date'. The WP_Query object can no work with multiple meta_keys, so this does not work: $shows_query = new WP_Query("category_name=shows&meta_key=band&meta_value=$artist_id&meta_key=date&orderby=meta_value&order=DESC"); So now I have to figure out a way to sort the posts in $shows_query['posts'] by one of their meta_values, which are not even IN their array. Any other, more sensible approach would also be appreciated.

• How can I use encryption with Gmail?

  I'm currently reading Cory Doctorow's novel Little Brother which includes a part about encrypted messaging, and even wrapping messages first in my private key and then your public key. I'd like to play around with that but from what I've googled so far it seems to be a rather convoluted process, requiring installing several program components, and creating an encrypted message requires doing some manual file manipulation. I'm surprised that I can't find something like a Firefox plugin that integrates encryption into Gmail. I've seen that there is a Thunderbird PGP plugin, but I don't use T-bird. I also saw a blog post that Google apparently toyed with PGP support in 2009, but nothing has appeared in the meantime. Question: To use encryption with Gmail, is there a simpler method than creating a file locally, then encrypting that file, and finally attaching it to a regular Gmail message?

  Let us say that I have a form to search by multiple tags in wordpress. <input type="checkbox" name="my_tags[]" value="tag1" /> <input type="checkbox" name="my_tags[]" value="tag2" /> I want to make it so that when my plugin sees that my_tags[] is set, it rewrites the request to say mysite.com/?tag=tag1+tag2 I know to use add_query_arg to put in the tag, and to use the query_vars filters to allow my arguments to be sent, but what do i hook into to get the arguments that were sent after the request, but before wp parses the request?

• What Windows app can sort a huge XML file?

  I have some enormous XML-based configuration files, with 125000 lines in them. The problem is that they are auto-generated by the system I use, and "child" tags are in a random order within their respective parent tag. This means that a diff comparison is impossible. I want to recursively sort all tags within a parent tag by the value in name="". Some parent tags only appear once and don't have a name="" parameter; these should be sorted by the tag name itself. Once the files are sorted like this, they can be compared quite easily using normal tools. We are currently using ExamXML which can match unsorted XML files, but it fails because the files are too big. Is there an application that can do this? (Windows much preferred; Linux only as a last resort) I do not want to dive into development or XSLT jobs. I am thinking that someone must have made a simple sorting tool like this already - I just can't find it using Google. • Why still use JPG compression? [closed]

  Back when the JPG image format was introduced, it made a lot of sense to reduce the file size, even accepting a loss in image quality, because files were being downloaded over a slow and expensive modem connection. In today's world, file size is no longer a concern, at least not regarding JPG where it seems silly to save 45kB on a photo. But my image editing apps still prompt me for the desired compression level when I save a file. Does it still make sense to go with the default 85? Why should I not crank it up to 100 for all files? Update based on comments: For web work, I might use PNG instead. But every smartphone and camera produces JPG files. The question arises when I save these edits. Audience is my own harddisk. We're talking photos, 2-5MB apiece. Chroma, subsampling, DCT - sorry, never heard of it. I'm a home user, not Photoshop guru. For the record, I use Paint Shop Pro on Win, and Gimp on Linux.

• Entity Framework: EntityCommand automatically parsing and determine parameter types?

  Hi everybody, Pretty new to Entity Framework I must admit, but I simply cannot believe that there is no built-in solution for this problem. Let's say I create an EntityCommand: EntityCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand(); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmd.CommandText = commandText; And let's say the the commandText is something like this: SELECT sp.UserName, sp.Rights FROM EntityContext.Users as sp WHERE sp.UserName=@UserName Now it would be really neat if the Parameters collection of cmd could be automatically filled. The framework should obviously know the types etc. but I guess that's simply not how it works beneath. The problem is that the commandText is configurable on run-time, and I must show some GUI that asks for values of the parameters. Any idea on how this could be accomplished?   Hey there, I looking for a way to dynamicly add a filter to my statment without using dynamic SQL. I want to select all computers from a table, but when I pass a computer id to the sp, I want to get only this computer. Actually I try this on DECLARE @ComputerFilter AS INT DECLARE @ComputerID AS INT SELECT Computername FROM Computer WHERE (ComputerID = @ComputerID) OR (@ComputerFilter IS NULL)) But this is 100 times slow then this statment and tooks as long as SELECT * FROM Computer SELECT Computername FROM Computer WHERE ComputerID = @ComputerID Is there a way to speed this statment up or is there any other way to solve this problem with one select und without dynamic sql?

  I am trying to open an Excel (xlsm) file via VBA. It may or may not be protected with a (known) password. I am using this code: On Error Resume Next Workbooks.Open filename, Password:=user_entered_pw opened = (Err.Number=0) On Error Goto 0 Now, this works fine if the workbook has a password. But if it is unprotected, it can NOT be opened. Apparently this is a bug in XL2007 if there is also workbook structure protection active. (http://vbaadventures.blogspot.com/2009/01/possible-error-in-excel-2007.html). On old XL2003, supplying a password would open both unprotected and password protected file. I tried: Workbooks.Open filename, Password:=user_entered_pw If (Err.Number <> 0) Then workbooks.open filename This works for unprotected and protected file. However if the user enters a wrong password it runs into the second line and pops up the "enter password" prompt, which I do not want. How to get around this?

• How to implement a timer for regular events?

  I would like to implement some timers into my application. My goal is to provide an easy way to execute some function every x seconds/minutes so I thought about implementing a 1 sec, 5 sec and 15 seconds timer. The first thing i would like to update every 1 second is the built in clock (don't know if there is any other solution in c#, used this method in c++) Another use would be e.g. a sync function etc. which shall be executed every xx seconds. My question is if there are any useful tutorials on this topic? It is the first time that I would like to implement such an timer system into one of my applications and I do not know if there are any things I have to keep in mind. Actually this works fine: var para = ' { "Parameter" : { "ID" : "5", "Name" : "Peter" } }' $.ajax({ type: "POST", contentType: "application/json", data: para, url: url success: success }); But I don't want to pass the data parameter as String and I think it should be possible to pass ist as array in any way. Like that: var para = { "Parameter" : { "ID" : 5, "Name" : "Peter" } } But when I try this I'm getting an error. What I'm doing wrong? Thanks
