  I am using wamp, PHP 5.4 running on win 8, I can't seem to get PHP to acknowledge the memcache dll. I download php_memcache-3.0.8-5.4-ts-vc9-x86.zip (the only one I could find). I copied the dll to C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.4.12\ext I added extension=php_memcache.dll restart the server. but still I cannot use memcache, and it is missing from Loaded Extensions list. Please supply a step-by-step instruction on how to set this up, Thanks.

• How to add Items to GridView in C# Windows Store App (Win8)

  To keep things simple let's just say I have a c# Windows Store Project for Windows 8 that has the following items: GridView (PlatformsGrid) List«PlatformSearchResult» (allPlatforms) DataTemplate (PlatformDataTemplate) in standardstyles.xaml allPlatforms is a collection of "PlatformSearchResult"objects populated from an online API, and has the following 3 properties: ID Name Alias I am able to add a new item to the gridview for each object that exists in my allPlatforms collection, however the items are blank and do not show the data from my objects. • Publishing a game -- any way to target both WP7 and Win8 Store?

  I'm at a dilemma which seems should soon become an important issue for a lot of developers. If I build a game in XNA, I won't be able to publish it on the Windows 8 Store, as it would be a classic application -- and classic applications can't be sold on the store. If I build a game in Metro DirectX, I would be able to sell it on the Store, but porting it to Windows Phone would involve porting it to Reach XNA, which in fact would likely involve more effort even than porting to OS X or Android -- both of which support C++. Of all the WinRT API that is supported on C++/JS/.NET, DirectX can only be programmed from C++. It's also unlikely that Microsoft will update Windows 7 or Vista to support the new DirectX features, although that would make the Metro DirectX the first new version of DirectX to stop supporting the immediate predecessor OS. If I build a game in Pre-Win8 DirectX 9/10/11, I won't be able to sell it on the Windows Store or Windows Phone, but I could sell it on something like Steam. It would also involve the most amount of manual plumbing. In fact, DirectWrite, despite being part of DirectX 11, doesn't talk to Direct3D. I'm getting really tired of all these restrictions -- artificial and otherwise -- and I'm coming to a point where I'm considering switching to a platform with a less fragmented API, like Android or Mac/iOS. As far as bringing a game into market goes, excluding the actual market share of any platforms that I might consider, what other factors would help me in making a decision? Just a few years ago this question was a lot easier to answer: if you were primarily concerned with Windows platforms, all you had to answer was whether you wanted DirectX, XNA, or something like SlimDX. If you made the wrong decision, no biggie -- all you really would have lost is XBox and the fairly small Windows Phone market.

• Asus X202e VivoBook, dual boot. How to get around UEFI and have Win8 & Ubuntu?

  I've gotten my hands on an Asus Vivobook X202e. I like it, handy to use, small, etc etc. Oh, it's the i3 core version. For school I still need Windows * sigh * for the .NET development. (I know, possible in Ubuntu, this n that, but for ease atm wanting to keep it with Win8). So. How to install both on this little thing? I've found a way into the BIOS (before splash screen, mash F2. Works only after reboot, not cold boot). But the whole boot loading setup is different than from what I know, and I must've messed up something because it's been "Attempting Repairs", "Analyzing hard disk", and a bunch of other things for the past 15 minutes. (All I've done is selected "disabled" on secure boot, picky as ** Microsoft). Keeping the original Windows installation is of no concern. Found the product key already and have a clean install waiting. BTW, not trying to leech knowledge, even though first question and no answers. I'm more and more active on Stackoverflow. But, especially due to secure boot and windows 8, I'm going over to Ubuntu. Well, more and more anyway, I like my Windows based games as well ;) UPDATE Managed to do a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. After disabling Secure Boot, also had to disable fast boot, and enable Launch CSM, leaving the option which appeared (Launch PXE OpROM) disabled. Then I rebooted, with the USB Boot drive I created using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool (scroll down for download link), provided by Microsoft. During the installation, I chose to install a clean version, therefor deleted the partitions containing current windows files. I left the Recovery partition (you never know...). Of course, the new Windows Installation dit not like this. Apparantly Windows cannot be installed on a GPT hard disk. Remember I hadn't changed the partition table, was still factory default! Minus a few partitions, granted. So deleted ALL partittions, did a format of the disk, created a new partition. Et voila, Windows installation started. FINALLY! WONDROUS After the installation, Windows still had background images located in C:/Users/ ME /AppData/Local/Microsoft/Themes/RoamedThemeFiles/DesktopBackground/ that I had in the previous installation. Before doing: format, delete partition, cascade partitions, create new partition of different size, format partition, install Windows. It managed to keep the images through all that. Anyone got an idea on that one? It also remembered the settings for the Windows Aero theme... UPDATED QUESTION: After all this you'd think I'd have the rest figured out. Wrong. Ubuntu 12.10, 64 bit installation can't read the partitioning of the hdd during the installation. Any ideas on how to fix this so the install for a dual-boot system can proceed? (Preferably without starting anew with Windows as well ;) )

• Windows 8 changes GRUB2 in every boot!

  I've installed Win8 and Ubuntu 12.10 both UEFI style (win8 first then ubuntu). GRUB2 shows me Both Ubuntu and Win8 entries. If I boot into Ubuntu is fine. I could reboot anytime I will see GRUB2 unchanged. The story changes when I Boot into Win8. When I boot to Win8 using GRUB2 it takes me to the Windows Boot manager (which only has the Windows 8 entry). I hit Windows and it boots fine. When I reboot, there's no GRUB2 nor Win loader. It has no boot loader. I boot a liveCD and download boot-repair and everything is back. It's a never ending cycle. Is GRUB2 supposed to load the Win boot loader? What can I do to fix it?

• Upgrade using downloaded $40 to Win8 x64 to blank SSD using only retail 32Bit XP install CD

  Here is my situation. Purchase the downloadable $40 UPGRADE version of Windows 8. Install this upgrade to a new/blank SSD drive WITHOUT prior installation of retail version of XP/service pack 3 (prefered). I have the retail purchased 32Bit XP installation media and I also have a slipstreamed disc that contains service pack 2. This 32bit XP license was installed to a desktop PC that I have NOT used for years (its broke). Questions: Can I upgrade using the $40 download upgrade version from retail 32Bit XP to 64Bit Windows 8 directly to new SSD? without first installing 32bit XP to new SSD? If 32bit XP needs to be installed to perform the upgrade to 64bit Win 8 is service XP service pack 3 still available; likewise, if the boxed retail version of XP 32bit is required to be pre-installed to the new SSD before attempting the downoladed $40 upgrade to 64Bit Win, can a clean install be performed or is a undesired actual upgrade performed? From what I have read this is way to complicated. Ideally, I should be able to install $40 upgrade version Win 64bit directly to new/blank SSD, then during the license verification process enter both the Win8 64Bit upgrade key and retail XP 32bit key (over internet or phone call).   My laptop's hard disk is gone, so I need to re-install my Windows. Would it be a good idea to directly install Win8 (so actually the preview). Is there any known incompatibility with Win7 which would be a show stopper? I have a Dell XPS laptop, I do not expect any driver issues since the series is pretty much mainstream. Would the Win8 preview become Win8 RTM automatically by updates, or would I need to re-install Win8 RTM. This would be the no-go for me. The Win8 preview does not require a key, so I guess it becomes Win 8 RTM and then needs to be activated (which is what I want). Basically the idea is, I have to install windows anyway, so why not using the latest version?

  Hi i have a problem trying to install ubuntu. The machine is a CX Ultrabook model CX.21903W Intel I5 with 500GB hard disk, 8 GB ram and 32 GB SSD. From Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported), and according to the steps guide: 1 - We create a partition from Win8 (70 GB) from the own win8 program. 2 - Confirm-SecureBootUEFI=True. 3 - From Win8, shift + Restart and from special menu we selected the UEFI Firmware Setting. 4 - From BIOS Option: ------Option 1) Disable Secure Boot. ------Option 2) Disable UEFI (Not Available) from Option 1: Three ways is available. With Secure Boot enable - We can't even boot ubuntu. A red windows saying Soft unproper signed. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: UEFI: USB ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu then a black windows appears and nothing happens. The same result if install ubuntu is selected. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: USB (No UEFI) ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu, - Ubuntu boots and we can install it even. 5 - Rebooting and just changing the boot order as ----1: Ubuntu [] ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others then nothings happens. 6 - Booting from LiveUSB again and, as per instructed, making Boot-Repair (A warning windows: Ubuntu is working in legacy mode.). 7 - Saving changes and rebooting, Grub works but selecting Ubuntu, a black windows appears and nothing happens. Selecting Win8, Win8 boots and works. Untill now we can't make the ubuntu installation. Any suggestion will be welcomed. kind regards and thanks in advance.

• Why bother writing an Windows 8 app?

  So you want to know more about development for Window 8. Great! There are lots of reasons you should be excited about this. Since I don’t know why YOU are interested in this, I’ll make a list of reasons people can choose from. (as a side note: whenever I talk about Win8 development I am referring to the Metro Style / WinRt side of things. Apps for the ‘classic’ desktop side of Win8 on Intel are business as usual…) So… Why would you care about making an app for Windows 8? 1. It’s cool. Let’s not beat around the bush: if you like development for a hobby then you’ll love to work on this new platform. You can create apps in a relative short time (short time as in compared to writing a new CRM system) and that makes it great for a hobby product. 2. You’ll stand out. Hey, we all need an ego boost every now and then. We all need to feel special. So if you can manage to be one of the first to have you app in the Store then you’ll likely to be noticed. Just close your eyes for a moment and image you standing in a bar. It’s crowded, and then you casually say “Oh yeah, I just had my app certified and it’s in the Win8 store now”. People will stop talking, will offer you drinks and beautiful women / gorgeous man / furry creatures from Alpha Centauri (whatever your preferences are) will propose. Or maybe not. Anyway…. 3. Make some cash! IDC predicts there will be about 350,000,000 Windows 8 licenses sold in the next year. Think about that number. 350,000,000. And they all have access to the Store. Where you’re app will be. With one little click they can select it, download and somehow magically $1.00 or $2.00 from their bank account is transferred to yours. Now, I am not saying that all of those people will download and buy your app but what if only 1% of them did? Remember: there aren’t that many apps available yet….. 4. Learn. Creating new small apps is a great way to learn new stuff. Yes, you could read about it (on this blog for instance) but the only way to learn something is to do it. So be prepared for the future and learn something new by doing it.Write an app! Now! 5. The biggie (for me at least): it’s fun. Even if you remove the points above it’s still fun to write for these devices and this platform. Now some of you will say : “But why not write a great app for IOS or Android?” I think this is a valid question. Of course the novelty of the platform wears out and points 2 and 3 from above list will not be as relevant as it is today. But still 1 4 and 5 remain. And don’t forget: if you already work on the Microsoft platform it’s not that hard to learn this new Win8 stuff. If you have done some XAML development (be it WPF or Silverlight) you are almost there in becoming a good Win8 developer. So you’ll be more productive much sooner than when you have to learn Objective C or Java. Even if you’re a HTML / Javascript developer (I say developer here, not designer) you’ll be up to speed on Win8 development pretty soon. Yes, you, that funky Web Developer who lives and breathes HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript / Node.Js / JQuery: you too can be a Win8 developer. A first class Win8 developer! So..   While I continue my affair with iOS / Android (which is now my bread / butter literally ); I also have managed to keep myself excited enough for all of new windows Stuff. Thanks to Priti Pushpak (my wife) for all the amazing Windows Phone 7 apps she is creating and uploading on appHub… I kind of like refreshing feel of win8 and apps. I also have fair bit of exposure on iPhone / iPad; Mac apps and I do put my two cents for win8 as well. If not an instant hit; win8 apps surely grows on you. So eventually win8 platform is here to stay. (oh yes and I cannot tell you how much hope I have for WP8 platform as well).   I've got an ASUS ZEnBook Prime, ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-XH72T 13.3" Touch Ultrabook and it runs 500GB SDD on RAID 0 configuration. This notebook is running Windows 8, and i desperately need to convert to Windows 7, but maintain RAID 0 configuration. My question is, will i have problems maintaining RAID 0 once converted? I would assume that the RAID 0 configuration is BIOS based and WINDOWS wont even know it, and will only see 1 drive regardless... right? Or will i need to do some weird Windows stuff to maintain RAID 0 config? = which doesn't make sense to me why it would.

• It seems Windows 8.1 killed my two T60 laptop batteries

  Upgraded Windows 7 to Win8 earlier this year, and last week upgraded to Windows 8.1. (Lenovo T60) Had no problem with battery usage when on Win7 nor Win8. After about a week of Win8.1 on my system, the battery stop working, while the system was on. The orange batt. indicator just keeps flashing. The system does not charge the battery (even though I know there was life in it). I installed a known good fully charged battery from another T60, it worked for aboute 40 mins then it instantly died in fron of my eyes. The system now shows the same orange flashing batt. light, but it is not charging. I know both these batteries are still good, they just appear to be dead. My research suggest that the new Win8.1 may not have updated the battery driver to Win8. I have since done that. Same problem. Research i s also pointing me to some 'smart chip' on the batteries that need to a reset. Is this possible ?? Does anyone know a process to reset the 'smart chip' on these batteries (fru# 92P1139) ????

After clicking that EasyBCD told me to add Win 8 entry via Add Entry Menu so i did. After restart, win 8 would not start. Neither would recovery F11. Attempts i made to Restore : Ran boot-repair from ubuntu live cd several time. Used Win8 system recovery disc created via virtualbox with win 8 preview iso. Automated repair from Win8 system recovery disc Ran following commands from cmd started from Win8 system recovery disc bootrec /fixmbr Result : Success message bootrec /rebuildbcd Result : after hitting (Y) "The requested system device cannot be found" System refresh started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that device is locked. System reset started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that required partition or device is missing or not accessible. Used automated repair from EasyRE disc. It gave success message. Used Fix boot problem from Macrium reflect winPE repair disc. Copied Recovery partition to usb. Booting from usb gave this error Your PC needs to be repaired. Error Code : 0XC000000f Press Enter to try again Press F8 for Startup Settings F8 & Enter does nothing I cannot install WIn7 or Win 8, error it gives : "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

  as title says, this is my first time trying ubuntu. I have been trying since last week with continuous googling and searching, but still no luck. I had win8 x64 installed before, then tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 desktop (dual OS option) I tried like 10 times already, everytime it's showing installation complete, but when i restarted and boot from my HDD, dual boot option is not showing, directly to win8 startup I installed win8 on C before. I had a 104gb free drive to install linux to (it's installed already.. but the dual boot option is now showing) In case it helps, Laptop Model : Acer Aspire 4752 Intel Core i3, 2.30GHz Ram 4GB 64 Bit OS - Windows 8 Pro with Media Center This is the url i got from the boot-repair http://paste.ubuntu.com/1407018/ (it's not win vista, thou it seems showing so in the link) Thanks a lot.. But now i need ubuntu-12.10-desktop also, along with win8. Is there is a way to install ubuntu-12.10-desktop, without affecting my files and win8 on second 50GB partition. Is the installation method is same as of other similar questions here. Please answer and i don't know anything about commands posted on other answers here, i just started to learn UNIX. • Triple Boot Question

  I have successfully set up a a win7,win8 and Ubuntu 12.10 system. Windows 8 and Ubuntu are located on the same SSD, while windows 7 is located on another SSD. All went great and I can continue playing around with all 3 OS's. My only annoyance is, while restarting, windows 7 boot loader runs first. If I select ubuntu in the win7 manager it then runs grub2 and asks me to select an os. I used easy bcd to add entries into win8's boot manager and was hoping to just use that one. I installed ubuntu's loader on to its own partition. Any suggestions to just use Win8 loader and still be able to choose between all 3?

  I have a win7 on my old Seagate HDD. Recently I installed one new SSD and setup win8 on it. So I have a boot table to choose win7 or win8 to startup. Now when I tried to remove the old one (the Seagate), I can't boot into windows any more. I just have a blinking underscore in boot screen, forever ang forever. I guess the reason is that the boot sector, or boot table (or something like that) was installed on the old HDD. So may someone show me how to boot into my win8 without reinstall the old HDD.

• How do I force Wubi to install a 32-bit version?

  I'm using Windows 8 (32bit) customer preview and installing WUBI Ubuntu 12,04.1. I down loaded 32 bit installer from ubuntu dot com, The wubi installer says AMD 64 xt. I had a previous 12,04 install and in the terminal typed in uname -a, it say's 64 bit. I also opened detail from the system and it read 64 bit system. My question is: how to ensure that a windows/wubi/ubuntu/installer is 32 bit or 64 bit BEFORE making a commitment to install from the wrong wubi install? After posting this I did another wubi installation. Signed into ubuntu, opened system settings, open Details: OS Type 64 Bit. Why is it doing this? I have a 32 Bit machine: Toshiba Satellite A-215 S5818 (previous Windows Vista)<--wiped clean. from an earlier installation of Ubuntu 10.10 which worked, in feb 2012 i installed Win8 Customer Preview Release (32Bit) which took over the BOOT order and 140 GB Hard Disk. I am trying patiently to install WUBI 32 BIT Ubuntu 12.04 Install, it keeps returning 64 BIT install.. Why?? I should also mention that i was successful in a dual boot install ubuntu 10.04/win8 32 bit install and upgraded to 12.04 which is fine for now, but i want a win8/wubi/ubuntu12.04 32 bit working not 64 bit breaking what i have. thank you.

  I installed Ubuntu 13.04 on Windows 8. Yes I can access both of them, but the process is kind of long. In BIOS, EFI is for Windows 8, legacy support is for Ubuntu. If I choose EFI first, the startup just go straight to Win8 without offering me a choice. If I choose legacy first, the starup will offer me a choice between win8 and ubuntu. But I can only choose Ubuntu. If i choose win8, there will be a mistake(file missing under configuration). That is to say, every time i wanna switch to another OS, I have to go into BIOS and change the priority settings. I heard something about secure boot might be the cause of this situation. But the thing is that there is not even an option called "secure boot" in my BIOS, which means i cannot disable it. All I want is that an option menu appears everytime i turn on my computer so i can easily choose what OS I want for today. Can anyone help me plz? Thank you very much!!

• Cannot find GRUB - Ubuntu/Windows 8 dual-boot

  Hello Ubuntu community, I find myself in an interesting situation. I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with Windows Vista. Recently my brother decided it would be a good idea to overwrite Vista with the Windows 8 consumer preview. Since we have had this PC for a very long time, we have long since lost the Vista CD, and according to the Windows 8 preview website you cannot recover your previous OS without it. I thought this would be a good opportunity to try out Ubuntu (since we obviously cannot keep the preview as an OS), but it appears that Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop is not compatible with Win8. Ubuntu doesn't run from the LiveUSB I made, instead it freezes on the loading screen and then disintegrates into black and white stripes. I blamed this failure on Ubuntu not being compatible with win8 yet and tried to install Ubuntu from the USB on a partition made from the remaining space on my hard drive - about 100GB. However the installer crashed while loading modules and told me I didn't have enough disk space. Since then, I have not been able to load either Ubuntu or Windows, BIOS is shifted over to the left of my screen, and I always get the same message: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> typing "ls" at the prompt gives me the following: (hd0) (hd0,msdos7) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) does this mean I have multiple partitions running windows on my computer? Is it possible to recover Vista without the disk? Are all of my problems stemming from Ubuntu not being compatible with Win8 preview? (I realize the majority of my questions are about Windows, but seeing as the prompt I get is for grub I thought I would ask here first.) Any insight anyone has on this predicament would be greatly appreciated.

• Managing common code on Windows 7 (.NET) and Windows 8 (WinRT)

  Recent announcements regarding Windows Phone 8 and the fact that it will have the WinRT behind it might make some of this less painful but I  discovered the "XmlDocument" object is in a new location in WinRT and is almost the same as it's brother in .NET System.Xml.XmlDocument (.NET) Windows.Data.Xml.Dom.XmlDocument (WinRT) The problem I am trying to solve is how to work with both types in the code that performs the same task on both Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 platforms. The challenge after this was the code that worked directly with the XMLDocument object needed to be seperate on both platforms since the method for populating the XmlDocument object is completly different on both platforms. To solve this issue. I made partial classes, one partial class for .NET and one for WinRT. Both projects have Links to the Partial Class that contains the code that is the same for the majority of the class, and the partial class contains the code that is unique to the version of the XmlDocument. The files with the little arrow in the lower left corner denotes 'linked files' and are shared in multiple projects but only exist in one location in source control. You can see that the _Win7 partial class is included directly in the project since it include code that is only for the .NET platform, where as it's cousin the _Win8 (not pictured above) has all of the code specific to the _Win8 platform. • Easiest way to replace preinstalled Windows 8 with new hard drive with Windows 7

  There are all kinds of questions and answers relevant moving Windows 8 to a new hard drive. I'm not seeing anything quite applicable to my situation. I have a new, unopened, unbooted notebook with pre-installed Windows 8. I will be replacing the hard drive before ever booting, unless that is not possible for some reason. I want to "downgrade" to Windows 7 Pro, and I want a clean installation. To do so legitimately, I apparently either need to: Upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro using Windows 8 Pro Pack, then downgrade; or Just install a newly-licensed copy of Windows 7 Pro. (Let me know if I've missed an option.) Installation media is likely not a problem, though if I need something vendor-specific that I cannot otherwise download, that could present an issue (Asus notebook, if that matters). If I could, I would just buy the Pro Pack upgrade, swap the hard drive (without ever booting), then install Windows 7 Pro directly on the new hard drive, using the Pro Pack key for activation. Will this work? Are there any activation issues? Edited to clarify, as some comments and answers indicate confusion: Here is, ideally, what I want to do: Before ever powering on the notebook, remove the current hard drive. Replace this hard drive with a new, blank hard drive. Install a clean copy of Windows 7 Pro on this new, blank hard drive. Unless I have no choice to accomplish the end result (a clean install of Win7 Pro on the newly-installed, previously-blank hard drive), I am not wanting to: Install Windows 7 "over" the current Windows 8 install (after upgrading to Win8 Pro). That would involve using the currenly-installed hard drive. I want to use a new, different hard drive. Copy the Win8 install to the new hard drive, then install Windows 7 "over" that installation. Install Windows 7 "over" the current Windows 8 install (after upgrading to Win8 Pro), then copy the installation to the new hard drive. If I have to use one of those three options, I will, but only if there is no other choice. Please note that this question is not about licensing: I will purchase the necessary license(s) to accomplish this procedure legally (apparently either Win8 Pro Pack or Win7 Pro -- the former currently appears less expensive).
