• KVM swtitch , screen resolution problem

  I use the lates ubuntu version. Till to day I use it with an acer trravelmate4070 and an LG screen in order to expand my destkop. Works great. Till today that I desided to connect my LG screen to a KVM switch in order to share the big screen with an other pc when I need it. In the KVM switch the resolution is lower and I can not manually change it. I read many solutions about making an .conf file but since I am new to Ubuntu I am afraid , more over I realized that these articles talk for the same problem but not as an expantion screen but as a main screen. • NVIDIA proprietary driver logging me to console instead of GUI

  Firstly i want to apologise for any mistakes, English is not my native language. My problem is I can't get NVIDIA proprietary drivers to work. I tried to install it on Ubuntu 12.04.1 32 and 64 bits, Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2, Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64 bits and openSUSE 12.2 64 bits and the error code and symptoms (logging to tty1 instead of GUI logging, low-res bootscreen) are the same for all of these distros. Right, I didn't tell what's the error code. It appears on sudo startx. NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error). I know that's the common problem, but I tried to blacklist or even remove the noveau drivers, install NVIDIA driver from repo/from official script/in "Additional drivers", editing xorg.conf and using Xorg -configurate and nvidia-xconfig, actualizing the kernel and entire distro and many, many things that I don't remember. But the problem is even better: entire Cinnamon (Mint) is freezing during the work. • Run application in specific X server or VNC port

  I have an application that I'd like to run, yet I'd like it to be visible only through a certain VNC port. I don't want the app to show up on the normal Ubuntu desktop. I want the app to run "in the background", and be viewable through VNC only. And when connected to this "alternate X server", the end-user wouldn't see any menu bars, no window decorations.. Just the app. Come to think of it, what I'm asking for is a sort of kiosk-mode for only a certain app, accessible through VNC. Is this possible or am I really reaching here? Thanks! Note that the app I wish to run in this fashion is written in Java. It is a JNLP file.

  My X server consistently crashes. It seems like this is happening when the X server is idle. This behaviour is new with 12.04. This is only happening on the second display of a multiseat system. Is there a configuration change I can make to stop this? • Why no icons for pcmanfm when run from remote x server

  pcmanfm works fine when run from a local console, but does not show file icons when run from a remote x session (ssh -X user@machine). Well, that's not quite true - icons for shell scripts show up OK, there are no icons for regular files and folders. There are a load of errors in the X console window "g_object_unref ... G_IS_OBJECT". Why are there no icons for pcmanfm when I run it from a remote x server?

• How do I access my remote Ubuntu server via X-windows from my Mac?

  I have an Ubuntu server (12.04 LTS) running remotely on a cloud hosting service. I have installed ubuntu-desktop via apt-get: $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop It appears to have installed no problem. I have confirmed that /etc/ssh/ssh_config on the server contains the lines ForwardAgent yes ForwardX11 yes ForwardX11Trusted yes and that /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the server contains the line: X11Forwarding yes I then rebooted the server. It came back up no problem. Now, starting X11.app on my Mac I am presented with an Xterm. I connect to my server from this terminal using: $ ssh -X <myhost> and I connect to the server, no problem. At this point I don't know what to do. I have tried $ sudo startx but I get a "no screens found" error. I don't have screens because its a headless cloud server, but I just want to acces it from my Mac through X. What now?

I think that xinput -set-cs may work but it does not.

• Mic not working when vga connector removed

  I have a computer that should run continuously without any connection to a monitor. For developmental purposes I have been keeping the vga connection with the monitor and experienced no problem until now. When I start the machine removing the vga connection beforehand, external microphone does not work. At first I didn't know anywhere to look and see the problem, but after a google search I saw that there is a command as alsamixer I ssh the machine end type alsamixer when it is connected to the monitor, here is the result If I remove monitor connection and reboot again, and then type alsamixer, I see the error, $ alsamixer cannot open mixer: No such file or directory I suspect that this error is related to X somehow. I really don't know anything about what goes beyond. This machine needs to work without any connection to a monitor. I would deeply appreciate any suggestions.

• Double X-screens on one monitor

  I have two monitors connected currently, my laptop display and an old dell monitor. For some reason one monitor (the dell) has double everything (it will make sense when you see the image). I think it came about when one day I tried using separate x-screen instead of just twin view for a specific reason I don't remember why (I was trying to get the Menu bar to show on my laptop monitor instead of the Dell I believe, it only shows up on the left-most monitor it seems) but anyhow I was wondering if anyone can help me fix this issue.   I am using XFCE-Ubuntu and do a lot of my development work there. In my case, when I sometimes use Xilinx ISE, the mouse cursor hangs as a Grab pointer and then stops responding. The entire X environment becomes unusable and I have to kill it and restart. This is becoming a serious annoyance. I saw this bug: AllowDeactivateGrabs is broken I see that sending AllowDeactivateGrabs in command line can kill the Grab. In my case, I am doing this on a remote server, so it is the application in the remote server (over X2GO) getting messed up. I am able to login in command line and kill X. Is there a way to generate AllowDeactivateGrabs in command line ? So I dont mess up my other applications and potentially lose data.

  When I want to work on my local Linux machines from windows, I use Putty+Xming and I set the Xming port in Putty connection settings. This way I have a terminal on the machine and if, for example, I run the command 'firefox' a firefox window is opened in Windows (while it is really running on the Linux machine). I want to do the same thing from other Linux machine (they are both Ubuntu machine) connect by SSH and become this connection X Server so any graphic component will be opened on local machine.   As many laptops with an ATI Radeon (5470HD) in it, mine is having issues too when installing the proprietary driver fglrx (screen hangs on startup). I read somewhere that these issues appear because the latest fglrx driver doesn't support the latest Xorg server 1.9 yet, which is installed on Ubuntu 10.10. So my question is whether any of you know when ati will support the latest xorg server? Thanks in advance!

• Coldfusion 9 losing connection to MySQL 5 database server a couple of weeks after the server is started

  We get the following Coldfusion error message after our server have been running for a couple of weeks: Error Executing Database Query.Could not create connection to database server. Attempted reconnect 3 times We run Coldfusion Enterprise 9 on a one year old XServer with Snow Leopard and MySQL 5 The server has about ten DSN set up in the Coldfusion Administrator All local, with default advanced settings, and host set to "localhost" The server is not under heavy load. The strange thing is that after a restart of the server, everything works fine. Then after a week or so, some databases will stop working, in the sense that Coldfusion cannot create a connection to them. If I then go to the Coldfusion Administrator and click "Verify all datasources", I will get that only 2 or 3 got verified, the other ones failed, and it is always the same datasources that can't be verified when the server starts to behave like this if I try to verify again, BUT NOT neccessary the same datasources that couldn't be verified the last time the server behaved like this. I know about the setting "max_connections" and we have included a line for that setting in the MySQL config file and set it to 2000, and when we read it by a query it says "2000", so that can't be the problem. Anyone?

• xvfb on a machine with a display, can an application run 'in the background?'

  I'm setting up to cron a web scraping job, using xvfb, firefox, and watir on my Mac OS X. In testing the script so far, firefox pops up visibly on the local desktop, the watir script executes, and then firefox exits (I quit firefox in my script). I'd like to set the xvfb DISPLAY such that firefox will run, but won't be seen on the local desktop, running 'in the background' so to speak. Nothing I've been able to find online discusses such a possibility - nor explains that it's not possible. Is it possible? If so, what do I need to do to make it work?

• How can I start XServer in Linux through apache user triggered by Perl script running in background?

  I am trying to launch MS Office through WINE using a PERL script hosted by apache and and triggered by other application. I am getting the following error message in log files "Application trying to create a window but no driver could not be loaded. Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly". If I run the script directly on shell prompt using root user then WINE starts XServer properly and execute MS MSoffice in addition to that if I set xhost +local:apache on shell prompt then also it works fine. How can I start the XServer from apache user?

• Origin of display connector numbers in XServer (e.g. HDMI1, HDMI2, DP1)

  a custom mainboard has a DVI and a DisplayPort connector on the board. Currently, everything that is connected at DVI will be named "HDMI2" in XServer. I can see that by calling the "xrandr" tool (in Ubuntu Trusty Tahr). A display connected to the DP connector will be named "DP1" or "HDMI1", if I use a DP-to-DVI adapter. We are now testing a slightly upgraded board version, which has a newer CPU (Intel J1800, Baytrail) among other things and the position of the DVI and DP connectors are switched. Also, everything at the DVI port is called "HDMI1" and something connected to the DP port gets "DP2" or "HDMI2". Q: What causes these numbers to be produced in this manner and where (probably in the kernel) is it happening? I suspect the cause to be hardware related. Specifically, at which CPU pins the connector pins are routed and attached to. Q: Would it be possible to influence this numbering scheme in order to retain the previous numbering behaviour?

• How do you completely reset monitor configuration (e.g. what used to be dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg)?

  Using unity 11.04. I have a secondary monitor (actually two, one at home, one at work). The home twin monitor set up works perfect (Viewsonic monitor). At work, I get very buggy behaviour, such as full screen applications 'ghosting' when maximized, and other strange effects. I would like to try and completely reset the monitor configurations (not unity or compiz), before doing anything else. In 10.10 this would be accomplished: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
